"Multiple operations, raids, capture, and checkpoints are initiated," President Castro added. The president added that the government was offering a cash reward of $32,707 to help and identify those responsible for the killings in Choloma. There has been a partial state of emergency in parts of Honduras since December in a bid to confront violent gangs and turf wars. The attacks On Saturday night, armed men opened fire in a billiards hall in a neighbourhood in Choloma, killing 13 people and seriously injuring one another, the news agency Reuters reported early Monday citing a police spokesperson. 3/4. Additional security being deployed: Minister Honduras' new Security Minister Gustavo Sanchez said on Sunday that the government would be sending a proposal to the Congress to "classify members of a criminal structure, maras or gangs as terrorists" in the coming days. Speaking to reporters, Security Minister Sanchez said that 1,000 additional police and military were being sent to the Sula Valley, where Choloma and San Pedro Sul are located. Nearly a week back, members of the notorious Barrio 18 gang killed 46 women inmates at a prison in Tamara town. The gang members killed the inmates by spraying them with gunfire, hacking them with machetes, and then locking survivors in their cells and dousing them with flammable liquid. President Castro called the killings monstrous, adding the attack was planned by "maras (street gangs) with the knowledge and acquiescence of security authorities.” The government announced that starting from July 21, the Military of Police of Public Order (PMOP) would take control of the country's 21 prisons for a year. Honduras announces curfew in two cities after over 20 killed in separate attacks

Forty-six women inmates at a prison in Honduras' Tamara town were slaughtered by gang members, the news agency Associated Press reported on Wednesday (June 21) citing an official.

Forty-six women inmates at a prison in Honduras' Tamara town were slaughtered by gang members, the news agency Associated Press reported on Wednesday (June 21) citing an official. The official said that the gang members killed the inmates on Tuesday by spraying them with gunfire, hacking them with machetes and then locking survivors in their cells and dousing them with flammable liquid. Juan López Rochez, the chief of operations of the National Police, said, "A group of armed people went to the cellblock of a rival gang, locked the doors, opened fire on them." According to relatives, the inmates at the prison had been threatened for weeks by members of the Barrio 18 gang. The national police investigation agency, meanwhile, said that 26 of the victims were burned to death and the remainder were shot or stabbed. At least seven inmates were being treated at a hospital in Tegucigalpa. Calling it a planned attack, Martinez added, "You can see the moment in which the women overcome the guards, leaving them helpless, and take their keys." President Castro calls killings 'monstrous', fires security minister On Wednesday, Honduran President Xiomara Castro called the inmates' murders "monstrous'' and fired Security Minister Ramón Sabillón, and replaced him with Gustavo Sánchez. President Castro said the attack was planned by "maras (street gangs) with the knowledge and acquiescence of security authorities.” Castro did not explain how the Barrio 18 members were able to get guns and machetes into the prison or how they moved freely into an adjoining cell block. The weaponry found As per the Associated Press report, 18 pistols, an assault rifle, two machine pistols and two grenades were smuggled into the prison in Tamara. The gang members were able to arm themselves, brushed past guards and attack. The members even carried locks to shut their victims inside, apparently to burn them to death. “Obviously, there must have been human failures,” National Police Chief Rochez said, adding the police were investigating all employees at the facility. 'There were ample warnings ahead of tragedy' Johanna Paola Soriano Euceda, who was waiting outside the morgue in Tegucigalpa for news about her mother and sister, both inmates, said on Wednesday that there were ample warnings ahead of Tuesday's killings. Euceda said her mother and sister told her that Barrio 18 members were out of control, adding they were fighting with them all the time. "That was the last time we talked,” she added. Another woman, who chose to remain anonymous, told the news agency that she was waiting for news about a friend who was jailed for robbery charges. “She told me the last time I saw her on Sunday that the (Barrio) 18 people had threatened them, that they were going to kill them if they didn’t turn over a relative,” the woman said. Military police to take control of prisons The Honduran government announced that the Military of Police of Public Order (PMOP) would take control of the country's 21 prisons for a year starting from July 21. The government said that the PMOP must recruit, train and educate 2,000 new prison guards for this purpose. Families of the victims of the Greek migrant shipwreck have expressed anger over the millions of dollars spent in the search for the submersible that went missing during a dive towards the Titanic wreck.

Families of the victims of the Greek migrant shipwreck have expressed anger over the millions of dollars spent in the search for the submersible that went missing during a dive towards the Titanic wreck. On June 14, a fishing boat with a capacity of 400 people had over 700 people on board when it sank. Eighty-two people died in the tragedy. At least 350 Pakistanis were aboard the migrant boat, the government said last Friday (June 23). According to a report by The Guardian on Sunday (June 25), Majeed from Pakistan grieved at funeral prayers without a body to bury. His cousins were among those in the migrant boat. Majeed's family is now tormented by rising evidence that European authorities knew the boat was in trouble but did not intervene. Also read | Titan submersible: Messages, emails going viral show OceanGate CEO ignored voyage’s safety issues As the family began mourning, several countries joined search efforts for the Titan submersible which had five men on board. The Titan was found in pieces from a "catastrophic implosion" that killed everyone, the US Coast Guard said last Thursday. 'Shocked to know millions were spent on Titan rescue' Speaking to The Guardian, Majeed, a law student, said, "We were shocked to know that millions would be spent on this rescue mission." “They used all resources, and so much news came out from this search. But they did not bother to search for hundreds of Pakistanis and other people who were on the Greek boat," Majeed added. A Pakistani journalist, who did not wish to be identified, told the publication, “It’s not the fault of five men that hundreds of people died off Greek shores. But it is the fault of a system where the class disparities are so huge.” Abdul Karim, a Pakistani shopkeeper, who lost his uncle and cousin in the migrant boat tragedy, said that he came to know that a submarine carrying five reach people was given more coverage than the migrants on the Greek boat. “Millions of dollars must have been spent to rescue the rich, but for the poor, there’s no such opportunity. Even the Pakistani government was not paying any heed to the issue," Karim added. Titan sub had more coverage than Greek shipwreck: Obama Last week, former United States president Barack Obama said that search operations for the Titan submersible had more coverage than the Greek migrant shipwreck. Obama was speaking at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation conference in Greece before news broke that the Titan submersible imploded. "I mean you think about what's happening this week, there's a potential tragedy unfolding with a submarine that is getting, you know, minute-to-minute coverage, all around the world, and it's understandable because obviously we all want and pray that those folks are rescued. But the fact that that's gotten so much more attention than 700 people who sank is, that's an untenable situation, and the notion that we can't do something about that is simply not true, and we know we can do something about it," he said. Wildfires in Canada left Montreal blanketed with smog on Sunday (June 25), causing the city to have the worst air quality of any major city globally, the news agency AFP reported early Monday citing pollution monitor IQAir.

Wildfires in Canada left Montreal blanketed with smog on Sunday (June 25), causing the city to have the worst air quality of any major city globally, the news agency AFP reported early Monday citing pollution monitor IQAir. As per IQAir, Montreal has unhealthy air quality as hundreds of wildfires are burning across the country. The report said that Environment Canada issued smog warnings in several Quebec regions due to the fire. "High concentrations of fine particulate matter are causing poor air quality and reduced visibilities," with conditions to persist until Monday morning, the agency said and urged residents to avoid outdoor activities and wear masks if they have to step outside. Major outdoor events cancelled in Montreal According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Montreal's Ironman triathlon race was cancelled because of the poor air quality and local authorities said that sports facilities and swimming pools would be closed. Quebec's forest fire protection agency SOPFEU said that there are 80 active forest fires in the province with several growing over the weekend due to dry weather and high temperatures. The SOPFEU said the extent of smoke is making it difficult for air tankers and helicopters to be effective. The agency, however, pointed out that significant amounts of rain are expected on Monday or Tuesday in the province's northwest. And on Wednesday, 119 French firefighters are due to arrive in Quebec to relieve a contingent of their compatriots in the field since early June. US begins sending data to Canada to help detect wildfires Earlier this month, the US Department of Defense began sending real-time satellite and sensor data to Canadian authorities to help detect wildfires. In a statement on June 17, US National Security Council spokesperson Adam Hodge said, "Starting today, DOD personnel will analyze and share real-time data derived from US satellites and sensors and convey it via a cooperative agreement between the US National Interagency Fire Center and the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Centre," Reuters reported. Hodge added that the government was also deploying additional US Department of the Interior (DOI), USDA Forest Service (USFS), and state wildland firefighting personnel and equipment to Canada. Around passengers of an Air India flight from London to Delhi were stranded for hours after the pilot of the aircraft refused to fly. According to Indian media reports, flight AI-112 made an emergency landing at the Jaipur airport on Sunday (June 25) because of bad weather conditions. The flight was scheduled to arrive in Delhi at 4 am. The flight later received clearance to resume the journey to Delhi from the Delhi Air Traffic Control (ATC), along with some other flights that were diverted to Jaipur too, a report by India Today said. However, the pilot refused to fly citing flight duty time limitations and duty hours. 'Passengers are hungry, tired...': Flyer shares ordeal Taking to Twitter, Adit, one of the passengers, said on Sunday that passengers had not been assisted with any recourse to reaching their final destinations. He urged Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia to assist the passengers urgently. In a follow-up tweet, Adit said, "And the saga seems to continue post 12 hours Air India! Still unorganised as ever. Passengers are hungry, tired, fatigued & frustrated with the inept service of what is meant to be a national airline." "Please stop with the false promises! The staff at the Jaipur airport have been absolutely inept & incorrigible to provide us with any assistance. The solution they have provided for all passengers to travel by coach to Delhi is absolutely damnable & ludicrous. Please coordinate & have us flown to Delhi ASAP," Adit told the airline. The passenger also tweeted a video of an airline staff member trying to resolve the plight of hundreds of passengers. "After making us wait for 18 long hours, without demonstrating basic courtesy of asking for water & food, I have exhausted my patience with Air India to show any resolve!" he said in another tweet. Air India pilot refuses to fly, leaves passengers stranded in Jaipur. Here's why

Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) said it had seized the main base of a heavily armed police unit on Sunday as it sought an edge in its war with the army during heavy fighting in the capital Khartoum.

The RSF in a statement said it had taken full control of the large base belonging to the Central Reserve Police southern Khartoum and posted footage of its fighters celebrating inside the facility, some removing boxes of ammunition from a warehouse.

It later said it had captured 160 pick-up trucks, 75 armoured personnel carriers, and 27 tanks. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the footage or the RSF statements. There was no immediate comment from the army or the police.

Since late Saturday, fighting has surged in the three cities that make up the wider capital - Khartoum, Bahri and Omdurman - as the conflict between the army and the RSF entered its 11th week.

Witnesses also reported a sharp increase in violence in recent days in Nyala, the largest city in the western Darfur region. The UN&nbsp;raised the alarm on Saturday over ethnic targeting and the killing of people from the Masalit community in El Geneina in West Darfur.

Khartoum and El Geneina have been worst affected by the war, although last week tensions and clashes escalated in other parts of Darfur and in Kordofan, in the south.

Fighting has intensified since a series of ceasefire deals agreed at talks led by the United States and Saudi Arabia in Jeddah failed to stick. The talks were adjourned last week.

The Central Reserve Police has been deployed by the army in ground fighting in recent weeks. It had previously been used as a combat force in several regions and to confront protesters demonstrating against a coup in 2021.

It was sanctioned last year by the United States, accused of using excessive force against protesters.

<h2>'Left alone'</h2>

The army, led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has been using air strikes and heavy artillery to try to dislodge the RSF led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti, from neighbourhoods across the capital.

"Since the early morning in north Omdurman we've had air strikes and artillery bombardment and RSF anti-aircraft fire," 47-year-old resident Mohamed al-Samani told Reuters by phone. "Where are the Jeddah talks, why did the world leave us to die alone in Burhan and Hemedti's war?"

In Nyala, a city that grew rapidly as people were displaced during the earlier conflict that spread in Darfur after 2003, witnesses reported a marked deterioration in the security situation over the past few days, with violent clashes in residential neighbourhoods. A human rights monitor said at least 25 civilians had been killed in Nyala since Tuesday.

"Today I left Nyala because of the war. Yesterday there was bombardment in the streets and bullets going into homes," Saleh Haroun, a 38-year-old resident of the city, told Reuters.

There was also fighting between the army and the RSF last week around El Fashir, capital of North Darfur, which the UN&nbsp;says is inaccessible to humanitarian workers.

In El Geneina, which has been almost entirely cut off from communications networks and aid supplies in recent weeks, attacks by Arab militias and the RSF have sent tens of thousands fleeing over the border to Chad.

UN&nbsp;Human Rights spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani on Saturday called for safe passage for people fleeing El Geneina and access for aid workers following reports of summary executions between the city and the border and "persistent hate speech" including calls to kill the Masalit or expel them.

Of those uprooted by the conflict in Sudan, nearly 2 million have been displaced internally and almost 600,000 have fled to neighbouring countries, according to the International Organization for Migration.

The girlfriend of an American dentist convicted of killing his wife in 2016 was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Friday (June 23) for being an accessory to the crime during a hearing where relatives of the victim said she destroyed their family.

The girlfriend of an American dentist convicted of killing his wife in 2016 was sentenced to 17 years in prison on Friday (June 23) for being an accessory to the crime during a hearing where relatives of the victim said she destroyed their family. In August last year, dentist Lawrence Rudolph was found guilty of murdering his wife Bianca Rudolph during a hunting trip in Zambia in 2016. His sentencing, which was originally set for last week, has been postponed. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press last Friday, Bianca's daughter Ana said that Lawrence's girlfriend Lori Milliron had plotted to eliminate her mother. "Lori, you have taken my parents. Despite everything you have done you will never take my soul. This might be difficult to understand ... because you don’t have one," Ana told the woman. Last year, Milliron, 65, was convicted of being an accessory to murder after the fact and obstructing a grand jury in the case. She was charged alongside Lawrence. 'Milliron's prison sentence excessive': Lawyer John Dill, an attorney for Milliron, said that the 65-year-old's prison sentence was longer than what is typically dolled out for such charges. Calling the sentence excessive, Dill argued the convictions were merely based on Milliron’s perjury charges and did not implicate her in the execution of the crime, as per the report. However, Judge William J. Martínez argued that the sentence was deserved as evidence pointed to Milliron “encouraging” the crime. Judge Martínez highlighted that Milliron seemed “unrepentant” in part because he judged her emotionally unmoved when she was shown graphic images and listened to the testimony during the trial. The woman insisted she was innocent and was sympathetic to the Rudolph family. Lawrence too has maintained his innocence, claiming Bianca accidentally shot herself while packing to leave Zambia for the United States. But prosecutors countered that evidence showed that that was impossible because the wound to her heart came from a shot fired from 2 to 3.5 feet away. Morning brief: Greece votes in repeat poll, Wagner rebellion updates, and more

Public support for Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen dropped to a four-year low after her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) got caught in a wave of #MeToo allegations.

Public support for Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen dropped to a four-year low after her Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) got caught in a wave of #MeToo allegations. According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) early Sunday (June 25), The Taiwanese Public Opinion Foundation put President Tsai's approval rating at 42.3 per cent in June, down from 45.3 per cent in May. Tsai's disapproval rating rose to 48.2 per cent- the worst since May 2019. The results of this were released on Thursday. Speaking to the SCMP, foundation head Michael You Ying-lung said there were two reasons for the drop in Tsai's popularity. The first reason is due to the impact of a host of sexual harassment cases on the DPP, You said, adding the second might have been the controversy over her choice of four grand justices to fill vacancies on Taiwan’s constitutional court. The wave of sexual harassment allegations You told the SCMP that President Tsai had to take the blame as all of the alleged incidents of sexual harassment occurred while she was the head of the party. He added that Tsai's close aide Yen Chih-fa was alleged to have been implicated in one of the cases. The report said that Yen has been accused of sexually harassing a former employee of a campaign group when she worked there in 2018. Yen denied the allegation and resigned on June 6. He withdrew a libel suit against the complainant that he had filed only the day before. On June 4, Tsai's office said it had no right to start an investigation into the case as the alleged incident did not take place at the presidential office. Apart from Yen, Chuang Suo-hang, Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to Thailand, stepped down from the post on Wednesday after he was alleged to have sexually harassed a fellow worker at the island's representative office in Bangkok. Taiwan's foreign ministry said that it asked Chuang to step down after an initial probe into his alleged wrongdoings. The ministry added the complainant reported the case but did not give details. Tsai's choice of grand justices As mentioned earlier, the second reason for the drop in Tsai's popularity might have been over her choice of four grand justices to fill vacancies on the constitutional court. The report said that the four nominees were seen as friendly to the DPP, leading to criticism that Tsai had turned the entire 15-seat council of grand justices into a pro-DPP organisation, with future rulings likely to favour the party's political positions. You also said that other factors for the drop in the president's popularity included inflation and the high cost of living, shrinking exports. Japan's military is testing Elon Musk's&nbsp;Starlink&nbsp;satellite internet service with an eye to adopting the technology next fiscal year, the Yomiuri newspaper reported on Sunday, citing unnamed government sources.

The Ministry of Defense already has access to communication satellites in geostationary orbit, but use of&nbsp;Starlink&nbsp;technology, operated by Musk's SpaceX, would add a constellation of satellites in low Earth orbit, the Yomiuri said.

Countries around the world are seeking to build resilience against the risk of jamming of communications or attacks on satellites in the event of conflict.

Japan's Self-Defence Forces have been testing&nbsp;Starlink&nbsp;since March with the system deployed in about 10 locations and in training, the newspaper said.

Defence ministry spokespeople could not immediately be reached for comment on the report outside business hours.

Starlink&nbsp;technology is being deployed by Ukraine on the battlefield, and Russia is attempting to block its use in the region. Musk said in October SpaceX could not afford to indefinitely fund&nbsp;Starlink's use in Ukraine.

The US&nbsp;Defense Department said this month it had contracted to provide&nbsp;Starlink&nbsp;services there.

Burmese peacock softshell turtles, a critically endangered turtle species, have hatched from their eggs in Myanmar. According to a report by The New York Times (NYT) on Saturday (June 24), the hatchlings emerged from a hole in the ground earlier this month and began crawling to new lives in Indawgyi Lake. Their first steps were captured on film by Nyein Chan and U Yae Aung, local staff members of Fauna & Flora, an international wildlife charity. The report said that the turtles were intercepted by Chan, a senior project officer, Aung, a project assistant, and others who weighed, measured, and released them. Burmese peacock turtles only found in Myanmar The Burmese peacock turtles, which are also known as Nilssonia Formosa are only found in Myanmar, and scientists know little about them. U Zau Lunn, a programme manager with Fauna & Flora, said that no one has done proper studies on the turtles. Lunn, whose team started working on preserving the turtles last year, said he and his staff were very pleased to have found the eggs and hatchlings so soon. He credited this success to close collaboration with residents of the villages around Indawgyi Lake. The NYT report said that recently the wildlife charity gave money to people living on the lakeshore to form a team of "turtle guardians" and patrol the area to protect nesting sites. In October last year, the community members and conservationists identified five turtle nests with about 20 eggs each and fenced them off. However, they did not know the species until the babies began hatching in June this year. The threats to the species The report pointed out that even though the turtle guardians protected the eggs, other threats to the turtle species remained including habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and accidental catches by fishermen. As per the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List, about 40 per cent of all turtle and tortoise species were threatened. The report also said that the total number of the Burmese peacock softshell turtles was unknown, but scientists suspected their population may have declined by at least 80 per cent over the past 90 years. The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) is planning a pan-India presence of Lord Balaji by constructing one replica of the Tirupati shrine in every state and Union Territory (UT) in the country, according to a report by the Times of India on Sunday (June 25). The report said that the TTD initially administered the affairs of only a handful of temples.&nbsp;

However, since its inception in 1933, the trust has established 58 temples dedicated to Lord Venkateswara across India. Most of these temples are located in the states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.&nbsp;

The report added while the TTD first began constructing and taking over temples in Andhra Pradesh, the first temple outside the region which it absorbed into its administration was the Balaji Temple in Uttarakhand's Rishikesh. This was in the year 1969.&nbsp;

Then in 2019, the TTD established a Lord Venkateswara temple in Kanyakumari. And on June 8 this year, a temple was opened in Jammu.&nbsp;

Recently, the trust laid a foundation stone for a replica of the Balaji temple in Maharashtra. The TTD is contemplating building three more temples in Gujarat's Gandhinagar, Chhattisgarh's Raipur and Bihar, the report added.&nbsp;

Speaking to the publication, TTD chairperson Subba Reddy said that constructing temples across 28 states and UTs was an attempt towards taking the almighty to the very doorsteps of the devotees.&nbsp;
