The United States Supreme Court on Tuesday (June 27) rejected the bid to give lawmakers unchecked power over elections. The bid, which was favoured by many conservatives, could hand sweeping power to state legislatures to establish rules for presidential and congressional elections and draft electoral maps giving huge advantages to the political party already in control.

According to a report by the news agency Reuters, the justices ruled against Republican state legislators in a case arising from a legal fight over their map of North Carolina's 14 US House of Representative districts. Last year, North Carolina's top court had blocked the map as unlawfully biased against Democratic voters. On Tuesday, the Republican legislators asked the Supreme Court justices to embrace the independent state legislature doctrine that would remove any role of state courts and state constitutions in regulating federal elections. The doctrine The independent state legislature doctrine is based in part on the US Constitution's statement that the time, place and manner of federal elections shall be prescribed in each state by the legislature thereof. "The Elections Clause does not insulate state legislatures from the ordinary exercise of state judicial review," US Chief Justice Roberts wrote of that constitutional provision. Reuters reported. The criticism of doctrine Critics of the independent state legislature doctrine, including legal scholars and democrats, called it a threat to American democratic norms. The critics have said that the doctrine's application would let legislatures easily pass further voting restrictions or pursue extreme partisan gerrymandering- which is a practice of manipulating electoral district boundaries to marginalize certain voters and increase the influence of others. White House welcomes Supreme Court ruling The White House on Tuesday welcomed the Supreme Court ruling by saying the bid would have let politicians undermine the will of the people. "As you know, this has been an enormous priority for the president and the vice president since the day that they entered office, to strengthen and shore up voting rights in this country. And so we're pleased that the Supreme Court rejected the extreme legal theory presented in this case, which would have interfered with state governments, which would have opened the door for politicians to undermine the will of the people, and would have threatened the freedom of all Americans to have their voices heard at the ballot box," White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Olivia Dalton said. US SC rejects bid to give lawmakers unchecked power over polls; White House praises ruling

Byju's- a prominent Indian education technology startup- is facing a slew of problems. On Tuesday (June 27), a Delaware court rejected a request by Byju's Term Loan B lenders to probe into a $500 million transfer from its US-based subsidiary Byju's Alpha to other entities.

The startup's valuation in Prosus NV has dropped to $5.1 billion. And last Friday (June 23), all three global investors at Byju's confirmed that their representatives had resigned from the board. These are just a few of the issues that Byju's is dealing with and the overall situation at the ed-tech startup remains uncertain. So what has gone wrong with Byju's in recent days? What has happened with Byju's recently? > On Tuesday, a lawyer representing Byju's told news agency Reuters that the startup had made up a shortfall in payments to a national pension fund. Byju's is currently battling a US lawsuit over a $1.2 billion loan. The lawyer's remark came after sources from India's labour ministry told Reuters that the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) identified a shortfall in payments from Byju's for August 2022 to May this year. The sources said the startup deposited $15 million after a directive issued by the EPFO, and the remaining balance would be deposited in a couple of days. > The above development comes as a Delaware court on Tuesday rejected a request by Byju's Term Loan B lenders to probe into a $500 million transfer from Byju's Alpha to other entities, the news agency PTI reported citing sources. Byju's denied the allegations levelled by its $1.2 billion Term Loan B lenders, saying it never defaulted on payments. > A report by the news agency Bloomberg on Tuesday said that Byju's was in talks with potential new shareholders to raise $1 billion in funding. Sources told Bloomberg that the startup was offering benefits like preferential treatment in the case of liquidation to the potential investors-an option that none of its existing shareholders has. > Last week, Byju's lost board members representing three global investors- Peak XV, Prosus NV, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative. Byju's auditor Deloitte also severed ties with the company. > Peak XV, Prosus NV, and the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative did not give reasons for stepping down. However, Deloitte said it was resigning from Byju's as the company had delayed financial statements for the year ending March 31, 2022. Deloitte also said that it did not receive the necessary documents even after writing several letters to the board. Byju's has now appointed BDO as its new auditor. > Following the above resignations, Byju's told its investors it would file 2022 audited earnings by September this year and 2023 results by December this year, Reuters reported last Sunday citing a person familiar with developments. > In recent months, the company's investors cut their valuation estimates. Blackrock, for example, slashed its internal valuation of Byju's by more than 60% to $8.2 billion, disclosures showed, Reuters also reported. What is Byju's? Byju's claims that it is the world's largest education technology company. It offers courses in mathematics, physics and chemistry for school students and also offers courses on competitive examinations conducted in India. As students worldwide shifted to the online mode of teaching due to the Covid pandemic, Byju's valuation shot up from $5 billion before the pandemic to $22 billion last year. However, the company's growth slowed as the effect of the pandemic reduced and students resumed offline classes. Byju's is run by its founder Byju Raveendran, and his wife, Divya Gokulnath. Raveendran launched the startup in 2011 and its app in 2015. The layoffs Last week, Byju's initiated a fresh round of layoffs which would impact around 500-1,000 full-time employees across the companies departments, according to a report by the Times of India. This comes after around 2,500 employees were laid off in October last year. The report said that the current layoffs would affect employees across sales, marketing, product and other teams. Several employees are uncertain about their future due to the recent job cuts. "Morale is at an all-time low. Literally, every person has a job portal open on their laptop at all times. Everyone wants to leave desperately before they are asked to pack up overnight," a senior manager at Byju's, who chose to remain anonymous, told Reuters on Sunday. "Right now the situation is so dismal, subordinates are sitting with their managers and job hunting," the manager added. Other employees, who also chose to remain anonymous, said they received no memos about the exit of Deloitte and the board members. Two other employees told the news agency that performance incentives, bonuses and appraisals were stalled amid the turmoil. Byju's response Last Friday, Byju's defended its governance practices and business, saying it is fixing and improving them. Playing down Blackrock's valuation cut, Byju's said that Blackrock was a minor shareholder with less than 1% of the company, Reuters reported. The ed-tech startup also dismissed concerns over the job cuts, saying that while it did lay some people off, it hired more. United States intelligence officials knew weeks ago that Russian mercenary group Wagner was planning a rebellion but kept this information secret from most allies, according to American media reports.

United States intelligence officials knew weeks ago that Russian mercenary group Wagner was planning a rebellion but kept this information secret from most allies, according to American media reports. As per a report by CNN on Monday (June 26), sources familiar with the matter said that intelligence officials gathered detailed information on Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin's rebellion plans, including where and how the mercenary group was planning to advance. The sources said that this intelligence was shared with only selected allies (of the US), including senior British officials, and not at the broader NATO level. Also read | Putin says Wagner mutineers 'can join army or go to Belarus' in his address to Russians Earlier, a report by The Washington Post last Saturday (June 24) said that intelligence officials urgently informed the White House and other government agencies (about the rebellion) so that they were not caught off guard. 'There were enough signals to tell...that something was up' Several US officials told The Washington Post that the exact nature and timing of Yevgeny Prigozhin's plans were not clear until his takeover of a military command and tank run towards Moscow. But there were enough signals to be able to tell the leadership that something was up, one official, who chose to remain anonymous, told the publication. Apart from the White House, senior officials at the Pentagon, the State Department and Congress were also briefed about the intelligence. Officials further told The Washington Post that a key trigger for Prigozhin was a Russian defence ministry order which said that all volunteer detachments were to sign contracts with the government. The order, issued on June 10, did not mention Wagner by name but the implication was clear: a takeover of the mercenary group, the report added. Also watch | Zelensky hands out awards, poses for selfies with Ukrainian troops × A senior Ukrainian official told the publication that Ukrainian military officials were watching Prigozhin after the June 10 order and believed he might mobilise his forces against Russia. The official added that the Wagner chief publicly protested the order and Ukrainian officials were serious about the possibility that he might move against Russian positions. The official also said that the timing of the move was unclear and pointed out he was not aware of the US sharing information with Ukraine about a possible march by Wagner. Putin was informed that Prigozhin was plotting something American intelligence agencies also believed that Russian President Vladimir Putin was informed that Prigozhin was plotting something. A US official said it was not clear when Putin was told. The report also said it was unclear why Putin did not take action to thwart the rebellion. Meanwhile, Putin on Monday paid tributes to Russian pilots who were killed during the failed weekend mutiny, confirming earlier reports that several aircraft were shot down by Wagner. "The courage and self-sacrifice of the fallen heroes-pilots saved Russia from tragic devastating consequences," Putin said in his first address since the mutiny. There is no official confirmation of how many pilots died. However, some Russian Telegram channels said last Saturday that 13 pilots were killed. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday (June 26) paid tributes to pilots who were killed during the failed mutiny of Wagner, confirming earlier reports of military bloggers that several aircraft were shot down by the mercenary group. In his first public address since the mutiny, President Putin said, "The courage and self-sacrifice of the fallen heroes-pilots saved Russia from tragic devastating consequences." Last Saturday, Wagner fighters took control of the southern city of Rostov-on-Don and its military command centre, then drove an armed convoy within 200 kilometres of Moscow before aborting their rebellion. Wagner Chief Yevgeny Prigozhin said the group was forced to shoot down aircraft that attacked them on the way. Putin let mutiny continue to avoid bloodshed On Monday, Putin said that he let Wagner's mutiny continue to avoid bloodshed. "From the very beginning of the events, steps were taken on my direct instruction to avoid serious bloodshed," Putin said. "Time was needed, among other things, to give those who had made a mistake a chance to come to their senses, to realise that their actions were firmly rejected by society and that the adventure in which they had been involved had tragic and destructive consequences for Russia and for our state," the Russian president added. He thanked Wagner fighters and commanders who stood down from the mutiny to avoid what he called "fratricidal bloodshed." Putin said he would honour his promise to allow the fighters to relocate to Belarus if they wanted, or to sign a contract with the defence ministry or simply return to their families. However, he made no mention of Prigozhin. Jet linked to Prigozhin arrives in Belarus On Tuesday, a jet linked to Prigozhin arrived in Belarus believed to be carrying him to exile three days after the Wagner chief aborted the mutiny. Flight tracking website Flightradar24 showed an Embraer Legacy 600 jet, bearing identification codes that matched a plane linked to Prigozhin in American sanctions documents, descending to landing altitude near Minsk. The German police on Tuesday (June 27) carried out a raid on properties belonging to the Archdiocese of Cologne as part of a perjury investigation against Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki.

The German police on Tuesday (June 27) carried out a raid on properties belonging to the Archdiocese of Cologne as part of a perjury investigation against Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki. According to a report by DW, the raids started during morning hours with police searching four properties in Cologne and one property each in both Kassel and the town of Lohfelden in Hesse. The report added that around 30 police officers were involved in the raids. The raids were also carried out at the premises of an IT company that supplied email service for the archdiocese. Raids met with cooperation Public broadcaster WDR reported that the raids were met with cooperation, with Cardinal Woelki opening the door to the cops at the archbishop's residence. "The measures were carried out without incident and met with widespread cooperation at their respective search locations," authorities said as per DW. The raids come as the Archbishop of Cologne has been accused of lying in court over his knowledge of sexual abuse cases in the church. Perjury is a felony offence and carries a minimum sentence of one year in prison. Prosecutors expect the investigation to take several months. What is the cardinal accused of? Cardinal Woelki is accused of failing to inform the Vatican about a sexual abuse allegation involving a priest after he took office as the Archbishop of Cologne in 2014. The case is about a priest in Düsseldorf who died in 2017 with whom Woelki worked. As per a DW report in 2020, a victim contacted the Archdiocese of Cologne in 2010, the priest sexually abused him when he was a child in the late 1970s. A year later, the victim was compensated in recognition of his suffering. The priest in Düsseldorf was accused of numerous counts of sexual abuse against minors. Cardinal Woelki said he had only known about the cases since 2022. However, a former employee said she had drawn up a list of abusers for him in 2015 but that did not interest the cardinal at all. The DW report further said that the probe leading to Tuesday's raid came from a complaint issued by an individual after the cardinal gave a sworn statement in a case against Bild newspaper over claims of libel in March. Survivors of Cyclone Mocha in Myanmar are struggling to rebuild their lives as the government cut off aid to affected areas. On May 14, Cyclone Mocha brought lashing rain and winds of 195 kilometres per hour to Myanmar and neighbouring Bangladesh, destroying buildings and turning streets into rivers. Last week, Human Rights Watch said in its report that the junta's aid blockages hindered every aspect of the cyclone response and turned an extreme weather event into a man-made catastrophe. According to a report by BBC early Tuesday (June 27), Aye Kyawt Phyu who lives in Rakhine's Sittwe said there is not enough food or water and finding either has been much harder with the monsoon underway. "It's raining all week. We are struggling every day. The children are studying in a school with no roof," Phyu said, adding that the government should allow aid from outside. She pointed out that in the immediate weeks after the storm, residents received some rice, clean water and oil from outside. San San Htay, another Sittwe resident, said that all houses collapsed when the storm hit, adding there is nowhere to stay. "When it rains now, I am sitting in the rain. I can't even sleep," Htay added. UN says only fraction of damaged homes repaired The United Nations (UN) humanitarian office said that only a fraction of damaged homes had been repaired, the report said. The UN also said that of the 5.4 million people in Myanmar who were in Cyclone Mocha's path, nearly 3.2 million are considered "most vulnerable." The report said that aid kept trickling in until June 8 when the government banned transportation for aid groups operating in Rakhine. A Rakhine government spokesperson told local media that they wanted to manage the distribution of aid, which he claimed had not been administered fairly. "NGOs are only interested in helping the Muslim community," the spokesperson said, in a reference to the Rohingyas. He further alleged that even though these international groups said they were donating to cyclone victims, the Rakhine community does not receive it. Junta names 18 generals to oversee rehabilitation processes According to the Human Rights Watch report on June 20, the junta named 18 generals to oversee the rehabilitation processes in disaster-affected townships, led by the junta’s deputy prime minister, Adm. Tin Aung San, and its minister of border affairs, Lt. Gen. Tun Tun Naung. San and Naung have been sanctioned by the United States, Canada and the European Union (EU). "The generals assigned to townships in Rakhine State include Brig. Gen. Sunny Ohn, who served as deputy commander in Rakhine State during the military’s 2017 campaign of crimes against humanity and acts of genocide against the Rohingya, and Lt. Gen. Aye Win, who led two investigations in 2017 that covered up military atrocities," the report added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. "I'm so proud to have stood with Assembly member Jenifer Rajkumar and community leaders in the fight to make Diwali a school holiday. I know it's a little early in the year, but: Shubh Diwali!," Mayor Adams tweeted. "I was proud to lead and win the fight to make Diwali a School Holiday, alongside Mayor Eric Adams," Jenifer Rajkumar tweeted. I'm so proud to have stood with Assemblymember @JeniferRajkumar and community leaders in the fight to make #Diwali a school holiday. I know it's a little early in the year, but: Shubh Diwali! pic.twitter.com/WD2dvTrpX3 — Mayor Eric Adams (@NYCMayor) June 26, 2023 × New York Senator Joe Addabbo, meanwhile, said, "Proud and thankful to have had my Senate bill for Diwali to be an NYC school holiday pass unanimously w bipartisan support." Senator Addabbo congratulated Rajkumar and thanked Adams for his leadership and Diwali support. This year Diwali will be celebrated on November 12. 'A win for New York City' The Hindu American Foundation tweeted early Monday that the declaration of Diwali as a school holiday in New York City was a win for the city and a historic day. "We hope Senator Nikil Saval's Diwali bill in PA and other nationwide efforts will see similar success," the foundation added. Weeks before, the New York state legislature passed a bill last week to make Diwali a school holiday in the city before it was adjourned. Two earlier attempts to pass the bill in 2021 and 2022 had failed. Diwali has not been declared a national holiday in the US yet. In May, Congresswoman Grace Meng introduced a bill in Congress to declare Diwali a federal holiday. If passed by Congress and signed by President Joe Biden, the Diwali Day Act would make the festival the 12th federally recognised holiday in the US, a report by the Times of India said. In April, Pennsylvania declared the Hindu festival an official holiday. The legislation to make Diwali an official holiday was introduced by Saval and Senator Greg Rothman. "The Senate voted unanimously to recognize Diwali as an official holiday! To all Pennsylvanians who celebrate this festival of light and connection: you are seen, you are welcome, you matter," Senator Saval tweeted on April 26. Former director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Retired General David Petraeus, said on Sunday (June 25) that Russian mercenary group Wagner's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin should be careful around open windows in Belarus.

Former director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Retired General David Petraeus, said on Sunday (June 25) that Russian mercenary group Wagner's chief Yevgeny Prigozhin should be careful around open windows in Belarus. Speaking to CNN, Petraeus said that Prigozhin lost his nerve in Russia after his revolt didn't appear to have generated the kind of support that he had hoped it would. "Putin has weakened, his government has weakened. The irony is that his junior partner in Belarus Lukashenko had to bail him out of this. Prigozhin kept his life but lost his Wagner group. And he should be careful around open windows in his new surroundings in Belarus," Petraeus told CNN. Also read | Russian officials’ threat to harm families made Wagner’s Prigozhin call off mutiny: Report “Clearly, Prigozhin lost his nerve. He was … within roughly two hours drive of the outskirts of Moscow, where they were starting to prepare defensive positions. This rebellion, although it had some applause along the way, didn’t appear to be generating the kind of support that he had hoped it would. And again, he decided to take the deal. He gave up this effort," the former CIA director added. Putin has been shaken personally: Petraeus Petraeus also told CNN that the Russian government and Putin had been shaken by the rebellion, adding this made the Russian president more vulnerable, arguably, than he has at any time in his two-decade rule of the country. Petraeus' comments come as Russian mercenaries led by Prigozhin made a short-lived rebellion last Saturday, seizing Rostov and advancing on Moscow demanding the removal of Russian military commanders in charge of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Wagner withdrew the rebellion after it struck a deal guaranteeing the safety and exile of Prigozhin to Belarus. Russian defence minister visits troops involved in Ukraine war Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu visited troops involved in the Ukraine war, his first public appearance since the weekend mutiny by Wagner, according to the RIA news agency on Monday (June 26). Though it was not yet clear when and where he met the troops and commanders of the Western military district. Meanwhile, Russia sought to restore calm following the aborted mutiny with Monday being declared a non-working day in Moscow to allow time for things to settle.
