A record 170,000 staffers left the National Health Service (NHS) in England last year as they cope with some of the worst pressures ever seen in the country’s health system. According to a report by The Guardian on Saturday (July 1), over 41,000 nurses were among those who left their jobs in NHS hospitals and community health services, with the highest leaving rate for at least a decade.

The number of staffers quitting overall rose by more than a quarter in 2022, compared to 2019, the report said citing The Observer.

Speaking to the publication, Sir Julian Hartley, chief executive of NHS Providers, said, "Staff did brilliant work during the pandemic, but there has been no respite. The data on people leaving is worrying and we need to see it reversed."

“We need to focus on staff wellbeing and continued professional development, showing the employers really do care about their frontline teams,” Sir Hartley added.

The Guardian report said that in the year leading up to December 31, 2022, nearly 170,000 staff left NHS service in hospitals, community health services, and other core health organisations, compared to 149,678 the previous year.

As per experts, 2022 might have been a peak year for exits from the NHS because of those who may have deferred retirement because of the Covid pandemic. However, there has been a rise in the number of employees citing work-life balance as the reason for quitting.

Govt vows huge recruitment drive for NHS

Last Friday, the government announced that the NHS would get over 300,000 staff under a new plan to deal with the chronic shortage of doctors and nurses. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the long-term workforce plan would include reducing the time doctors spend in medical school and training more homegrown staff, to improve staffing levels that are below the European average.

Sir Julian Hartley welcomed the workforce plan, particularly the expansion of apprenticeship routes for clinical staff and the ambition to train more staff and reduce reliance on international recruitment and agency workers, the report further said.

Currently, NHS England has 112,000 vacancies as it struggles to replace the large number of workers leaving the service. The government said the plan's main goals are to train and retain more staff and reform working practices.

The government hopes to add an extra 60,000 doctors, 170,000 nurses and 71,000 health professionals by 2037.

At least eight people were killed in a shootout in Mexico between suspected cartel members on Wednesday (June 28), the news agency AFP reported on Thursday citing local authorities. According to the state prosecutor's office, the shootout occurred in Guachochi, a mountainous area of the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua. "Eight lifeless people were found, three of them burned, as well as an injured male person, who was transferred for medical attention," an official statement said. Guachochi is one of the largest towns in a mountainous area and is home to the Indigenous people of the Tarahumara ethnic group. The authorities also said that they found two burnt-out vans in the area. The cartels involved Citing local media, AFP reported that Wednesday's shootout involved rival cells of the notorious Sinaloa cartel and the victims included a local head of the criminal organisation. Further details are awaited. The Tarahumara mountain area is located on one of the drug routes to the United States. The area has been rocked for years by violence linked to drug trafficking. A few weeks back, five men were killed and one was injured during a shootout between two rival cartels in southern Chihuahua, a report by Border Report said. In a statement on June 6, Chihuahua's Attorney General's office said the police recovered seven vehicles, four AR-15 and AK-47 style rifles, and a fragmentary grenade from two different crime scenes. The office said that the confrontation was between armed groups but did not identify them. However, local media reported that those killed belonged to the Sinaloa cartel and the attackers were from the Juarez cartel. Armed group kidnaps 14 security ministry staff The shootout in Guachochi comes a day after an armed group in Mexico's Chiapas kidnapped 14 state security ministry employees. As per the ministry, the kidnapped employees, all men, were taken by members of the armed group on a highway about 34.4 kilometres west of the state capital Tuxtla Gutierrez. Morning brief: Protests in France over teen's killing, and more

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in India has sent notices to the Maharashtra government and the state’s police chief over 11 labourers allegedly being kept chained in Osmanabad district by a contractor to dig wells and prevent them from escaping, officials said on Monday.

The NHRC in a statement observed that the provisions of the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act have been “grossly violated” by the contractor in this case.

The incident clearly indicates the “failure of the local administration to safeguard the labourers from such brutality committed upon them by the contractors, without any fear of the law”. The officers who failed to do their lawful duty are required to be dealt with according to law, the rights panel said.

The content of the media report, if true, amounts to a grave violation of the human rights of the labourers, the commission said.

The NHRC has taken “suo motu cognisance of a media report that 11 labourers were kept chained by the contractor to dig wells and prevent them from escaping in the Osmanabad district of Maharashtra,” it said in the statement on Monday.

The labourers were allegedly forced to work for 12 hours a day to dig a well without any wages. They got food once a day and were forced to answer nature’s call inside the well itself.

Reportedly, they were rescued on June 17 after one of them managed to sneak out, reached his village in the state’s Hingoli district and informed the police about the torture, the statement said.

Mere rescue by the police and arrest of some of the accused in this case is “not going to serve the purpose”, the rights panel observed.

Accordingly, it has issued notices to the state’s chief secretary and the director general of police, seeking a detailed report within four weeks.

“It should also include the status of the investigation being conducted in the case, action taken against the perpetrators and steps taken/proposed to be taken to ensure that such incidents do not recur in future anywhere in the area,” the statement added.

It is necessary for the administration to start proceedings as per labour laws in the case to ensure the proper release of all the labourers and that relief and rehabilitation laid down under the Bonded Labour System (Abolition) Act is provided to the victims without any delay, the rights body said.

It is also required on the part of the Osmanabad district magistrate to ensure “strict compliance” of the labour laws for the safety and security of the labourers working under contractors in the area, it added.

According to the June 21 media report, the labourers were deployed by the contractors two-three months ago to dig a well in Khamaswadi and Wakharwadi villages under the Dhoki police station limits in Osmanabad.

Reportedly, the contractors were “habitual in deploying these tactics” while engaging labourers for three-four months in such torturous conditions that, when released, they preferred running away without asking for their wages to escape more torture.

The Pakistani government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were discussing a $2.5-billion "standby arrangement" for six to nine months as the current bailout programme is set to expire on Friday (June 30).

The Pakistani government and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) were discussing a $2.5-billion "standby arrangement" for six to nine months as the current bailout programme is set to expire on Friday (June 30). On Tuesday, Pakistan Finance Minister Ishaq Dar said the two sides were working on a "mechanism" to ensure that Islamabad got the entire amount and not just the close to $1.1 billion due under the current review, the news agency Reuters reported on Wednesday. However, Finance Minister Dar did not elaborate on what the mechanism was. The government is currently racing against time to unlock $1.1 billion under the lender's ninth review of a $6.5-billion Extended Fund Facility agreed upon in 2019. As per a report by the Express Tribune, the ninth review is in order after recent adjustments but Pakistan is keen to receive the entire undisbursed amount, which is only possible in a new programme. The report added that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif discussed signing a new standby arrangement (SBA) worth $2.6 billion for six months with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva. 'Pak taking decisive steps to push through economic reforms' On Tuesday, the IMF said that Pakistan was taking decisive steps to push through a series of economic reforms. In a statement, IMF's Pakistan mission chief Nathan Porter said that the country's authorities were bringing in policies more in line with the economic reform programme supported by the lender. "The IMF team continues discussions with Pakistani authorities with the aim of quickly reaching an agreement on financial support,” the statement added. Porter said that the steps taken by the government include parliament’s approval of a budget that expands the tax base and allows for more social and development spending, and efforts to improve the functioning of the foreign exchange market. The IMF mission chief also cited the country’s tightening of monetary policy to reduce inflationary and balance of payment pressures that “affect particularly the more vulnerable.” In the FY 24 budget, the government had earmarked $2.5 billion in external receipts from the IMF. Pakistan needs upwards of $22 billion to service external debt, make interest payments, and finance its current account for FY24. An Indian-origin man has been sentenced to over three years in prison for smuggling over 800 Indian citizens into the US using Uber. According to a report by the news agency PTI on Thursday (June 29), the US Justice Department said Rajinder Pal Singh, a resident of California, pleaded guilty in February- admitting that he took in over $50,000 as a key member of a smuggling ring, bringing in hundreds of Indian nationals across the border from Canada. Acting US Attorney Tessa M Gorman said that Singh, 49, was sentenced on Tuesday in prison for conspiracy to transport and harbour certain aliens for profit and conspiracy to commit money laundering. "Over a four-year period, Mr Singh arranged for more than 800 people to be smuggled into the US across the northern border and into Washington State," Gorman said. Seventeen Uber accounts tied to smuggling ring Citing records filed in the case, the Justice Department said that from July 2018 Singh and his co-conspirators used Uber to transport people who had illegally crossed the border from Canada to Seattle. And from mid-2018 to May 2022, the 49-year-old arranged over 600 trips involving the transportation of Indian nationals illegally smuggled into the US. From July 2018 to April 2022, the 17 Uber accounts tied to the smuggling ring ran up more than $80,000 in charges, investigation estimates showed. The Justice Department said that the co-conspirators would use the one-way vehicle rentals to transport those smuggled to their ultimate destinations outside Washington state in trips that usually began near the border in the early hours and were split between different rides. The members of the smuggling ring also used sophisticated means to launder the illicit proceeds. The Justice Department said investigators also found about $45,000 in cash and counterfeit identity documents from one of Singh's homes in California. It further said that Singh, who is not legally present in the US, will likely be deported following his prison term. A Delta Airlines flight from Atlanta to Charlotte on Wednesday (June 28) after the crew reported malfunctioning gear to air traffic control. In a statement, a Delta Airlines spokesperson said that Flight 1092 landed safely without the use of nose gear at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

Passengers aboard the flight disembarked using the jet slide. The flight landed safely and no injuries were reported. Photographs from the runway showed wheels on the ground under the wings, but the nose of the aircraft on the runway. The jet slide extended from the door of the aircraft with firefighters helping passengers disembark. The Boeing 717 aircraft had 96 passengers, two pilots, and three flight attendants on board. What happened to the aircraft? As per the statement, the trouble began when the pilots received a “nose gear unsafe” indication as the aircraft approached the Charlotte Douglas International Airport and so they flew by the air traffic control tower so controllers could visually inspect the plane. Controllers saw the nose landing gear doors were open, but the gear had not descended and the pilots landed the plane without the nose gear. Also read | Delta Airlines flight makes emergency landing as air slide opens, crew member injured The crew then led the passengers to the emergency chutes at the two exits after the emergency landing. An unidentified passenger shared a video of the landing with WCNC-TV which showed passengers braced with their heads down and arms holding on to the seat back in front of them as the aircraft landed. 'We were going to hear a big thud': Passenger Speaking to the news agency Associated Press, passenger Chris Skotarczak said that if he had not seen the aircraft's shadow without the nose wheel down and been told to brace for landing, he would have thought nothing was wrong. “The pilot told us, we’re going to land, we’re going to hear a big thud and we’re going to hear a lot of grinding,” Skotarczak said and highlighted the emergency landing was smoother than a regular landing. All passengers were taken to the terminal. They were asked to leave everything else on the aircraft as they left. Such landing gear failures 'very rare': Former pilot Gregory A. Zahornacky, a former airline pilot, told the Associated Press that such landing gear failures are "very rare" and that commercial airlines in the United States have a “fantastic” record of maintaining planes. Zahornacky said the crew did what they were supposed to do when the nose gear did not work as expected, which is to extend the rest of the plane’s landing gear to absorb energy as the plane touches the runway. “I think there’s probably very minimal damage to the aircraft, which is secondary … to the safety of the passengers and the crew. So I think that’s the big takeaway here is that everything was handled the correct way and safely done,” he added. The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and many other organisations were affected by a hacking campaign that exploited a flaw in file-transfer software called MOVEit.

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and many other organisations were affected by a hacking campaign that exploited a flaw in file-transfer software called MOVEit. According to a report by the news agency Bloomberg late Wednesday (June 28), a health department official said the hackers gained access to data by exploiting MOVEit software used by third-party vendors. The official added that no systems or networks of the department were compromised. The organisations impacted by hacking As per the report, the organisations impacted by the hack included Ernst & Young, Honeywell, the government of Nova Scotia, the New York City Department of Education, and the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles, where the names, addresses, social security numbers, and dates of birth were likely exposed for all Louisiana residents with a state-issued license. The vulnerability allowed the hackers to steal files from these organisations that had been uploaded to MOVEit. Full extent of breach unknown The full extent of the breach is unknown. A person familiar with developments told Bloomberg that the incident was large-scale while another said tens of thousands of records may have been exposed. They said the HHS believed the hackers to be from Clop- a Russian-speaking group. Earlier in June, a US official said that several federal agencies experienced intrusions affecting their MOVEit applications. The official did not name the agencies. The report said that the US Department of Energy received ransom requests from the hackers after two of its entities fell victim to the intrusions. What is Clop? Is it a Russian gang? Clop is a ransomware-as-a-service gang, meaning that it hires out its software and infrastructure for other cybercriminals in return for a cut of the proceeds. It helped pioneer the practice of double extortion. Clop's identity and location are not publicly known. But as per a report by the news agency Reuters early Thursday, the group is Russia-linked or Russian-speaking and its name could be a play on the Russian word for 'bug'. In 2021, authorities in Ukraine announced the arrests of six people tied to the group, but it was not clear whether they were core members. Nepali Gurkhas are joining the Russian mercenary group Wagner eyeing Russian citizenship. According to a report by the EurAsian Times on Sunday (June 25), some of the fighters have retired from the Nepali Army. The report said that Nepal has been caught off guard as it does not have any bilateral pacts with Russia, and the Nepalese embassy in Moscow claimed that youngsters are going in their personal capacity. More than a dozen Nepali youths are getting trained in handling weapons and fighting. On May 16 this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree, simplifying the process of obtaining Russian citizenship for foreigners who joined the Russian military in the ongoing Ukraine war. Speaking to the EurAsian Times, strategic analyst Major General Binoj Basnyat (retired) from the Nepal Army said, "This is a concerning situation. The Nepal government is not able to do anything about it as they have gone in an individual capacity." Also read | Vladimir Putin wanted to kill Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin but stopped. Here's what happened Basnyat said that if Nepalese citizens are part of the military of a sovereign nation, it has to be part of the government's foreign policy, or there has to be a Memorandum of Understanding or a treaty with the other country. "No such instruments are in place in this case,” the strategic analyst added. An offer hard to resist The May 16 decree signed by Putin is hard for Nepali youngsters to resist keeping in mind the unemployment rate in the country. Basnyat said that after finishing their studies, a large number of Nepali youngsters are coming out for employment, but they have not been absorbed. "The number of youth looking to leave for other countries in search of jobs and opportunities has shot up,” he added. The major employment opportunities in Nepal are in the informal sector with poor working conditions and wages, the report said. Videos show Nepalese youths joining Russian Army For the past few weeks, videos on social media platforms including TikTok and Telegram showed Nepali youngsters joining the Russian Army. There was also news of Nepalese citizens joining the French Legion, but entering Russia is easier than entering Europe. Earlier, the publication reported that Nepalese Gurkhas won't be joining the Indian Army this year as Kathmandu did not allow the recruitment. A youth from Nepal's Koshi, who studied at a Russian university, said he had two options after completing his education - either go back to Nepal unemployed or join the Russian army. The person said that even during the (army) training period, the salary was about 50,000 Nepalese Rupees along with insurance. "After one year, citizenship is also available. If I don’t die in one year, I will live here,” he added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here.
