At least 13 people were injured in New York's Syracuse city early Sunday (June 11) at a street party that turned violent. According to a report by the news agency Associated Press, the police said at least four people suffered gunshot wounds and five others had apparent knife wounds, among other injuries. The other victims were accidentally struck by vehicles while fleeing. The street party in Syracuse attracted hundreds of people on the city’s West Side. The crowd was a mix of high school students, recent high school graduates, and college students. According to Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile, the party was advertised on social media, adding no permit was issued, and the streets were not officially blocked off or policed. Cecile said officers patrolling heard gunshots, and the city’s gunshot detection system showed dozens of rounds being fired. Shot, stabbed, struck by vehicles Those who were shot include a 22-year-old woman who was struck in the abdomen, a 17-year-old girl who suffered a wound to her hip and midsection, a 20-year-old woman who was shot in her right hip, and a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to a forearm, the report said. Those who were stabbed include a 25-year-old woman with multiple wounds to her shoulder and midsection, a 17-year-old girl with cuts to a leg and arm, a 19-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy who both suffered cuts to their heads, and a 24-year-old woman with cuts to both legs, the report said. And those who were struck by vehicles suffered from cuts and abrasions. All victims expected to survive Police Lt. Matthew Malinowski said on Sunday the victims- three males and 10 females- were expected to survive. Malinowski said the victims belonged to the age group f 17 and 25, and they were located on the street or later at hospitals. The police launched an investigation to determine what led to the violence and whether the stabbings preceded or followed the shots being fired. Further details are awaited. New York: 13 shot, stabbed at weekend street party in Syracuse

Thailand's prime ministerial frontrunner Pita Limjareonrat will be investigated over whether he was qualified to run in last month's election, a top official said on Monday, in another setback as he battles to win backing for his premiership.

Pita, the 42-year-old leader of the progressive Move Forward party whose election victory stunned&nbsp;Thailand's military-backed establishment, has faced multiple complaints from rivals, three of which the poll body has dismissed for late submission, while four others against the party have been thrown out.

But Pita is by no means in the clear, with the commission looking into whether he was knowingly unfit to register as a parliamentary candidate because of his ownership of shares in a media firm, which is prohibited under election rules.

Pita has downplayed the issue, arguing the shares in the firm, ITV, have since been transferred and the company was not an active media organisation. He faces disqualification, up to 10 years in jail and 20 years banned from politics if found in violation.

"There is sufficient information to suspect that the candidate is unfit or prohibited from seeking public office, according to electoral regulations, to further investigate Pita," election commission chairman Ittiporn Boonprakong told Reuters in a text message.

The opposition Move Forward and Pheu Thai parties thumped conservative opponents allied with the military in a resounding rejection of nearly nine years of government led or backed by the army after its 2014 coup.

They have formed an alliance with six smaller parties, but Pita's bid to be premier and form the government is expected to face resistance in a conservative-leaning Senate that was appointed under the military. A bicameral vote on a prime minister is expected by August, with weeks of uncertainty ahead.

Move Forward's anti-establishment agenda clashes with the interests of a royalist military and old-money business elite that has influenced politics for decades in Southeast Asia's second biggest economy.

The party won huge support among the youth and the capital Bangkok with a platform of institutional change, including reducing the army's political role, undoing monopolies and reviewing a controversial law against insulting the monarchy.

Asked about challenges against Move Forward, its secretary-general Chaitawat Tulathon on Monday said the voice of the people will be protected.

"The election commission may take action against Pita in the future," he told a press conference.

"The party is confident that the allegations do not have sufficient evidence."

Opposition leaders in Russia are failing to unite against President Vladimir Putin. According to a report by the Financial Times on Saturday (June 10), opposition leaders gathered in Brussels to plot a path back to democracy, with Putin's main rivals in jail or exiled and squabbling about how to move forward. But rather than uniting Russia’s liberals, Moscow's invasion of Ukraine deepened existing rifts and added new controversies. Andrius Kubilius, a Lithuanian politician and a Member of the European Parliament (MEP), who invited Russian opposition leaders to the European Parliament, said, "They have these infights, and maybe it will take some time. It would be good if they were able to show more unity around some kind of strategy." The report said that though the European Union (EU) hoped to bring the Russian opposition together, the splits were yet again on display when followers of jailed anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny, refused to take part in parliament's event. Leonid Volkov, Navalny’s longtime chief of staff, said that Navalny's anti-corruption foundation declined invitations to the event for fear of being “in the same boat” with rival opposition activists who did not share their views. Senior officials of the EU who were part of the event sought to cajole the opposition into crafting a cogent plan for democracy and rallying Russians against the Ukraine war. “We want to work with Russia, but a different Russia,” said Michael Siebert, Eastern Europe and Central Asia director for the EU diplomatic service. However, the opposition remains divided on how to achieve that different Russia and who would lead it. Navalny's group blamed for perpetuating conflict situations Exiled Russian businessman and opposition activist Mikhail Khodorkovsky blamed Navalny's foundation for perpetuating conflict situations, the Financial Times report said. "In their minds, there can only be the leader. It doesn’t fit [in] their worldview that you can have lots of leaders — that this room is full of them," Khodorkovsky said, adding the war in Ukraine put Navalny’s team on an equal footing with the rest of the opposition. “I have nothing against impotency. Wanting to work with people who are in Russia is great. But we can see from [the small pro-Navalny rally] that they can’t do it under a totalitarian regime either,” the opposition activist added. Navalny has been in jail since 2021, and anyone who associates with his group against the war faces potential arrest. This has made it difficult for his group to stage rallies. Vladimir Milov, who informally advises Navalny but is not part of the foundation, said that “they have this huge, political capital, developed with blood, sweat, and tears” and the prospect of being just one of many opposition groups was simply not appealing to them, the report also said. Meanwhile, Oleksiy Arestovich, a former senior Ukrainian official implored the parliament event's attendees to patch up their differences. Arestovich said that he talks a lot to the Russian opposition, adding every second sentence starts with a complaint about other members (of the opposition). “If you have a common goal, like an open, democratic Russia, that should be enough of a basis to work together,” Arestovich said. Microsoft-owned job-networking site LinkedIn is betting that the way employers hire candidates and the way candidates find jobs would radically change in the future.

Microsoft-owned job-networking site LinkedIn is betting that the way employers hire candidates and the way candidates find jobs would radically change in the future. According to a report by the news agency Bloomberg on Friday (June 9), LinkedIn sees a future where employees will be willing to look beyond long-established entry requirements such as college degrees and prior job titles to focus instead on an applicant's proven skills such as leadership, data analytics etc. Citing a survey conducted last month, the report said while more than 80 per cent of employers believed that they should hire based on skills rather than degrees, more than half say they are still hiring college grads because it feels less risky. Joseph Fuller, a management professor at Harvard Business School, said, "Skills-based hiring is the great white whale, the holy grail of the labour market." A skills-matching feature launched In February this year, LinkedIn launched a skills-matching feature, allowing users to see how the skills a job calls for might align with their own strengths. The feature had some positive signs: Over 45% of recruiters on LinkedIn now search for candidates using skills data, according to the company. Bloomberg reported that skills-first hiring is considered a way to expand economic opportunity, especially for people who do not have a college degree. However, there hasn’t been much large-scale progress in that direction till now. Aneesh Raman, Vice-President and Head of The Opportunity Project at LinkedIn, said, “Skills has been a conversation that has been going on for years, for decades.” “In those conversations were often the same people: policymakers, academics, nonprofits. Missing from those conversations, almost all of them, were employers,” Raman added. And when it comes to skills-based hiring, Raman said, "Employers are no longer asking: ‘What is this?’ They're asking, ‘How do I do this?’” LinkedIn to use AI With the surging use of artificial intelligence, LinkedIn is now building AI into its platform to make the match between job seekers and employers more efficient. The wildcard for LinkedIn might be its ability to tap into Microsoft's AI progress. That might help the job-networking site surface often-overlooked candidates, like those who lack a four-year degree or have a criminal conviction, Professor Joseph Fuller from Harvard Business School said. Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic more than three years ago, there has been a debate about whether the virus emerged due to a laboratory leak or was it from nature.

Since the beginning of the Covid pandemic more than three years ago, there has been a debate about whether the virus emerged due to a laboratory leak or was it from nature. And researchers who have over these years attempted to find the answer have been hampered by a lack of transparency from China, the country from where the virus first emerged. However, a report in The Sunday Times on Saturday (June 10) said that Chinese scientists were running a covert project of dangerous experiments that caused a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology and started the Covid outbreak. Citing US investigators, the report said there was no published information on the work as it was done in collaboration with researchers from the Chinese military, which was funding it, and was pursuing bioweapons. 'Institute engaged in risky experiments on coronaviruses' The Sunday Times report said that the Wuhan Institute of Virology had started hunting the origins of the Sars virus in 2003. It attracted funding from the US government through a New York-based charity. The institute was engaged in risky experiments on coronaviruses it gathered from bat caves in southern China. Initially, the findings (of the experiments) were made public and the institute argued that the associated risks were justified as the work might help develop vaccines. Also read | FBI coronavirus 'lab leak' claims hurt US credibility: China Fast forward to 2016, researchers found a new type of coronavirus in a mineshaft in Mojiang in Yunnan province where people had died from symptoms similar to Sars. And instead of warning the world, China did not report these deaths. The report said that the virus found there are now recognised as the only members of Covid’s immediate family known to have been in existence pre-pandemic. They were transported to the Wuhan Institute and the work of its scientists became classified. American investigators said the classified programme was to make the mineshaft viruses more infectious to humans, the report added. The investigators believed this led to the creation of Covid and that it leaked into Wuhan after a laboratory accident. “It has become increasingly clear that the Wuhan Institute of Virology was involved in the creation, promulgation, and cover-up of the Covid-19 pandemic,” one of the investigators said. In November 2019, researchers working on these experiments were hospitalised with Covid-like symptoms, and their relatives died. China blocks foreign experts from probing source of pandemic The Sunday Times report also pointed out that foreign experts seeking to identify the source of the pandemic were blocked from investigating by China. Alice Hughes, a British bat expert, was a professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences which oversees the Wuhan Institute. Hughes had been working in the mines. She said she was barred from speaking to the media about her research and was being watched by Beijing. The restrictions forced her to leave China and move to Hong Kong. US investigators get access to secret intelligence As countries around the world emerged from lockdowns, US investigators were given access to secret intelligence on what was going on in China before Covid emerged. The report said that over a dozen investigators were given access to “metadata, phone information and internet information” from intercepts collected by the US intelligence services. The report also said that the shadow project on the mine viruses at the Wuhan Institute was being funded by the Chinese military. In a separate report, US State Department investigators said, "Despite presenting itself as a civilian institution, the United States has determined that the Wuhan Institute of Virology has collaborated on publications and secret projects with China’s military. The Wuhan Institute of Virology has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017." The Chinese military was also given positions of responsibility in the institute. One of the investigators said the reason the Mojiang case was covered up was due to military secrecy related to [the army’s] pursuit of dual-use capabilities in virological biological weapons and vaccines. The military had taken an interest in developing a vaccine for the viruses so they could be used as potential bioweapons, the report also said. Wuhan institute involved in creation, cover-up of Covid pandemic: Report

Taurine, a nutrient found in fish, meat, and energy drinks boosts health and extends life in a range of animal species, according to a study published in the journal Science on Friday (June 9).

Taurine, a nutrient found in fish, meat, and energy drinks boosts health and extends life in a range of animal species, according to a study published in the journal Science on Friday (June 9). The study said that ageing is associated with physiological changes that range in scale from organelles to organ systems but researchers were still working to understand the molecular basis for these changes. The researchers, who studied various animals, found that the amount of the semi-essential amino acid taurine in circulation decreased with age. "Supplementation with taurine slowed key markers of ageing such as increased DNA damage, telomerase deficiency, impaired mitochondrial function, and cellular senescence," the study said. "Taurine supplementation improved life span in mice and health span in monkeys," it added. Taurine, which is produced by animals including humans, could be the key to a longer and healthier life. 'Taurine concentration in blood declines with age' Taurine, which is produced by animals including humans, could be the key to a longer and healthier life. Friday's study said blood concentration of Taurine declines with age in mice, monkeys, and humans. And to probe whether this decline contributed to ageing, researchers orally fed Taurine or a control solution once daily to middle-aged wild-type female and male C57Bl/6J mice until the end of life. "Taurine-fed mice of both sexes survived longer than the control mice. The median life span of taurine-treated mice increased by 10 to 12%, and life expectancy at 28 months increased by about 18 to 25%," the study said. A meaningful anti-ageing therapy should not only improve life span but also health span. And hence, the researchers investigated the health of taurine-fed middle-aged mice and found an improved functioning of bone, muscle, pancreas, brain, fat, gut, and immune system, indicating an overall increase in health span. A similar effect was seen in monkeys. Does Taurine increase life span of worms, yeast? The study probed whether Taurine supplementation increased the life span of worms and yeast. It found out that although Taurine did not affect the replicative life span of unicellular yeast, it increased the life span in multicellular worms. It added that Taruine abundance decreases during ageing, and a reversal of this decline through taurine supplementation increases the health span and life span in mice and worms and the health span in monkeys. "To test whether the Taurine deficiency is a driver of ageing in humans as well, long-term, well-controlled taurine supplementation trials that measure health span and life span as outcomes are required," it further said. Elixir of life? Taurine extends life, improves physical, brain health in animals: Study

Former United States president Donald Trump hit out at the Justice Department, accusing prosecutors, without any evidence, of a politically motivated campaign to keep him from the White House.

Former United States president Donald Trump hit out at the Justice Department, accusing prosecutors, without any evidence, of a politically motivated campaign to keep him from the White House. Making his first public appearance on Saturday (June 10) after being indicted in the classified documents case, Trump, 77, alleged that US President Joe Biden orchestrated the criminal charges to undermine his main political rival's 20204 presidential campaign. “Now the Marxist left is once again using the same corrupt DOJ (Department Justice) and the same corrupt FBI. And the Attorney General and the local district attorneys to interfere in our elections at a level that our country and few countries have ever seen before. They're cheating, they're crooked, they're corrupt. These criminals cannot be rewarded. They must be defeated. You have to defeat them,” Trump said at Georgia's state Republican convention, the news agency Reuters reported. Also read | Trump in trouble: Unsealed indictment accuses him of keeping nuclear secrets, sharing security vulnerabilities “The ridiculous and baseless indictment of me by the Biden administration's weaponised Department of Injustice will go down as among the most horrific abuses of power in the history of our country. Many people have said that, Democrats have even said that this vicious persecution is a travesty of justice. You're watching Joe Biden. Joe Biden, think of it. Biden is trying to jail his leading political opponent, an opponent that's beating him by a lot in the polls, just like they do in Stalinist Russia or communist China,” he added. Trump calls indictment fake, mentions Presidential Records Act During Saturday's convention, Trump called the indictment fake, adding "And as president, all of my documents fell under what is known as the Presidential Records Act, which is not at all a criminal act. Everything, it's all judged by the Presidential Records Act." Trump said that during the indictment, prosecutors didn't even once mention the Act as they wanted to use something called Espionage Act. He further said that President Biden also had many classified documents and he was trying to prevent authorities from seeing them. On Friday, prosecutors unsealed a 37-count indictment against Trump, alleging the former president mishandled classified documents that included some of the country's most sensitive security secrets after leaving the White House in 2021. Prosecutors alleged Trump held on to materials, including documents about the US nuclear programme and domestic vulnerabilities to a potential attack, that he knew he should not have retained. He is due to make a first appearance in the case in a Miami court on Tuesday (June 13). Meanwhile, addressing a separate event in North Carolina, Donald Trump said the current US administration was buying oil from Venezuela, adding, "When I left, (office) Venezuela was ready to collapse. We would have taken it over, we would have gotten all that oil." (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (June 10) criticised parts of the world for being indifferent towards the Kakhovka dam disaster last week. In his evening address, President Zelensky said “Now, unfortunately, we see that at some levels, the world is simply shamefully indifferent to the ecocide and human tragedy caused by the Russian terrorist attack on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station,” the news agency Reuters reported.

“When international organisations that are supposed to protect life on a global scale fail to form and send a rescue mission to the occupied territory even in a week, when some global actors do not dare to come out with clear and strong statements condemning this latest Russian war crime, terrorists are simply fuelled by this weakness of the world, this indifference - it encourages them," Zelensky added. The Ukrainian president also said that over 3,000 people had been evacuated from Kherson and Mykolaiv regions. Russian shelling continues at evacuation points: Zelensky During his address, Zelensky pointed out that Russian shelling continued even at evacuation points, adding Moscow was not providing any real help to people in the flooded areas. "International organisations must work where we have not yet de-occupied our territories. Every life is important — the entire Kherson region, the entire south, every city and village. We will do everything possible and impossible to get help to all our people,” he further said. The destruction of the Kakhovka dam is one of the latest flashpoints between Ukraine and Russia in the ongoing war. Both countries have blamed each other for the disaster. The flood triggered by the damage has forced thousands of civilians to flee and has also sparked fears of an environmental and humanitarian disaster. At least five people have died due to floods. Russia behind dam breach: EU foreign policy chief On Friday, the European Union's (EU) Foreign Policy chief Josep Borrel said everything indicated that Russia was behind the Kakhovka dam destruction. Speaking to Spanish public television, Borrell said, "The dam was not bombed. It was destroyed by explosives installed in the areas where the turbines are located. This area is under Russian control," the news agency AFP reported. "I wasn't there to find out who did it. But everything seems to indicate that if it took place in an area under Russian control, it is difficult to believe it could have been someone else," he added. The EU foreign policy chief also pointed out the dam's destruction would cause an ecological disaster. Ukraine dam collapse: Zelensky says world ‘shamefully indifferent’ to disaster

US lawmakers have urged the Joe Biden administration to address the visa wait time issue in India on a priority basis. During two separate Congressional hearings on consular affairs budget, Senator Bob Menendez (Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee), and Congressman Michael Waltz (Co-Chair of the&nbsp;House India Caucus), asked the US State Department officials&nbsp;&nbsp;why people in India were facing visa wait time up to 600 days.

The request comes just days before Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in the US on June 21-24.

The lawmakers described India as an important partner&nbsp;where people-to-people relationship played a significant role, according to a report by the news agency PTI.

"The United States enjoys strong people to people ties with India. India is now part of the QUAD. We are constantly engaging it in geostrategic interests that we have. New Jersey is home to a great number of Indian Americans and their families. I appreciate and applaud the department's heightened focus towards reducing wait times for first time B1-B2 applicants in India?" Senator Menendez said.&nbsp;

"But despite that progress this past year, India continues to face the longest wait times globally with average wait times for an appointment for the first time B1-B2 applicant ranging between 450 and 600 days. Could you please speak to me as to why that is the case? Why does it take up to 600 days for an adjudication" Menendez asked during a hearing at the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The senator also highlighted that India-US relationship is "one of the most consequential economic diplomatic security relationships we have in the 21st century."

<h2>Lawmaker mentions complaint received from Indian-Americans</h2>

Echoing Menendez's concerns, Congressman Michael Waltz said that one of the consistent and painful complaints that he received from Indian-Americans and his Indian colleagues was the wait time (for visas). During a hearing by the House Foreign Relations Committee, Waltz said, "One of the consistent and painful complaints that I receive from Indian Americans and from our Indian colleagues is the wait time, despite the fact that in India, I believe you have the second or third most consular affairs officers."

"The data that I have is that the average waiting period in Mumbai, India was 587 calendar days. With our trade over USD 150 billion with the consequential relationship with Prime Minister Narendra Modi coming for a state dinner and visit just this month, what are we doing to fix this. Have you looked at any India specific policy fast tracks or issues?"&nbsp;Waltz asked, PTI reported.

The Congressman said that a delay in visa would impact the relationship between the two countries.&nbsp;

<h2>'State Department took several steps to address issue'</h2>

At the two separate&nbsp;Congressional hearings, Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs&nbsp;Rena Bitter told the lawmakers that the State Department had taken several steps to address the issue.&nbsp;

"India is a place where we have historically had high demand for visas and there's just a tremendous amount of pent up demand. One of the things about India is that every post is unique, but they also had a really devastating bout with Covid 19 quite late and so that their ability to meet the pent up demand lasted quite a bit longer," Bitter said.&nbsp;

"We have opened appointments for Indian nationals, dedicated appointments in other posts for specific appointments and in all other categories," Bitter added.&nbsp;"We will adjudicate 1 million visas in India this year. Our productivity there is extraordinarily high," she further said.&nbsp;
