The Indian government has launched an inquiry into an allegation that the local pharmaceutical regulator, in return for a bribe, helped switch samples of cough syrups that were linked to the death of at least 70 children in Gambia before the samples were tested in an Indian laboratory, the news agency Reuters said in a report on Wednesday (June 14).

Citing a letter to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in the Indian state of Haryana, the report said a lawyer named Yashpal has accused the state's Drug Controller Manmohan Taneja of taking a $605,419 bribe from Maiden Pharmaceuticals to help it switch the samples before the laboratory tested them.

Yashpal did not mention where he got this information from in the letter or gave any evidence for his claim about the syrups manufactured by Maiden Pharmaceuticals. Speaking to Reuters, Yashpal said he learned about the bribe allegation from two individuals in India's pharmaceutical industry, one working with Maiden, but refused to identify them.

'Want the matter formally investigated'

The lawyer told Reuters that he wanted the matter to be formally investigated, and he was waiting to be asked to submit an affidavit that would trigger such an investigation.

Yashpal further said that he neither represented any pharmaceutical companies nor worked on cases involving compensation. He started looking into Manmohan Taneja after a friend from the pharmaceutical industry alerted him to another case of alleged corruption.

After the Gambia case came into public light, Yashpal said he started probing more closely and spoke with 40 sources across Haryana. During his conversations, the lawyer learnt about the alleged bribe. In the letter, the lawyer made around half a dozen claims of corruption against Taneja including the state's drug controller taking bribes to approve products and issue drug licences since 2021. However, no evidence was provided to support these claims.

"I want an investigation done by someone outside the health department because Taneja himself is a senior health official. It is a question of India's reputation," Yashpal added.

Last month, Taneja's deputy Lalit Kumar Goel asked Yashpal to come to the regulator's office "with all relevant documents" to discuss the inquiry, the report said citing another letter. The lawyer said he did not comply with this request as he did not feel comfortable bringing such details to the deputy of someone he accused of corruption

Lawyer's complaint to be taken forward

Shatrujeet Kapur, director-general of the Haryana ACB, told Reuters that Yashpal's complaint would be taken forward by the Additional Chief Secretary (ACS) for health in Haryana, the state's top health bureaucrat.

The state's Additional Chief Secretary, G. Anupama, meanwhile, told the news agency that an inquiry was underway.

Nottingham Locked Down After 3 Found Dead In Streets

Police said that two people were found dead in Ilkeston Road. The third victim was found in the city's Magdala road area.

Police officers were alerted to another incident on Milton Street, where someone driving a van tried to run over three people.

Police said that a 31-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder.
Chief Constable Kate Meynell said the police believed that all the incidents were linked.

Several major roads in Nottingham have been closed and the tram network has been suspended.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak condoled the loss of lives in Nottingham. Sunak thanked the police and emergency services for their response to the shocking incident.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has detected the brightest gamma-ray burst of all time. In a statement issued last Thursday (June 8), NASA said, "When scientists detected the gamma-ray burst known as GRB 221009A on Oct. 9, 2022, they dubbed it the brightest of all time, or BOAT." Citing follow-up studies, NASA said the GRB 221009A is 70 times brighter and far more energetic than the previous record holder.

While scientists don’t yet understand why, they received a tantalizing clue from NASA’s NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) observatory. According to a study published in the journal Science Advances, scientists used NuSTAR observations of the event to show how the collapsing star ejected a jet of material that had a shape not previously observed among gamma-ray burst jets, as well as other unique characteristics.

The source of these distinctions may be the progenitor star, the study said, adding it is also possible that an entirely different mechanism launches the very brightest jets into space.

'Event so much brighter than any gamma-ray burst'

Brendan O’Connor, the lead author of the study said the October 9, 2022 event was so much brighter and more energetic than any gamma-ray burst seen before. “Then, when we analyzed the NuSTAR data, we realized that it also has this unique jet structure. And that was really exciting because we have no way of studying the star that produced this event; it’s gone now. But we now have some data giving us clues about how it exploded,” O'Connor, an astronomer at George Washington University, added.

What are gamma rays?

Gamma rays are high-energy photons that are produced by some of the most violent events in the universe. They are the most energetic form of light in the universe yet invisible to the human eye. All known gamma-ray bursts have originated in galaxies outside our Milky Way but are bright enough to be spotted billions of light-years away, as per NASA.

"Some blink into existence and last less than two seconds, while so-called long gamma-ray bursts typically radiate gamma rays for a minute or more. These objects can radiate other wavelengths for weeks," the American space agency added.

Details about the GRB 221009A

NASA said in the statement that the GRB 221009A- a long gamma-ray burst- was so bright that it effectively blinded most gamma-ray instruments in space. American scientists were able to reconstruct the event with data from NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope to determine its actual brightness.

"Similar to other gamma-ray bursts, GRB 221009A had a jet that erupted from the collapsing star like it was shot into space from a fire hose, with gamma rays radiating from the hot gas and particles at the jet’s core," the statement said.

However, GRB 221009A's jet stood out in a few ways. NASA said that in just about every previously observed gamma-ray burst, the jet remained remarkably compact and there was little to no stray light or material outside the narrow beam. The jet had a narrow core with wider, sloping sides.

The jet from the BOAT was unique in one important way- the energy of the material in GRB 221009A also varied, meaning that instead of all the material in the jet having the same energy, the energy of the material changed with distance from the jet’s core, NASA further said and highlighted this had never been observed in a long gamma-ray burst jet earlier.

India: Farmers hold 'Mahapanchayat' in Haryana over Minimum Support Price

The Indian government refuted media reports of a major data breach in the Covid vaccination portal CoWIN. Issuing a statement, the Union Health Ministry said, "These reports allege a breach of data from the Co-WIN portal of the Union Health Ministry, which is the repository of all data of beneficiaries who have been vaccinated against Covid."

“Certain posts on the social media platform Twitter have claimed using a Telegram (online messenger application) BOT, the personal data of individuals who have been vaccinated is being accessed. It is reported that the BOT has been able to pull individual data by simply passing the mobile number or Aadhaar number of a beneficiary,” the statement said.

The ministry asserted that such reports are without any basis and are mischievous.

“Co-WIN portal of the Health Ministry is completely safe with adequate safeguards for data privacy. Furthermore, security measures are in place on the Co-WIN portal, with Web Application Firewall, Anti-DDoS, SSL/TLS, regular vulnerability assessment, Identity & Access Management etc. Only OTP authentication-based access of data is provided,” the statement further said.

The ministry also said that without a One-Time-Password (OTP), vaccinated beneficiaries’ data cannot be shared with any BOT.

The health ministry also requested the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) to look into this issue and submit a report. In addition, an internal exercise has been initiated to review the existing security measures of CoWIN.

CERT-In in its initial report has pointed out that the backend database for the Telegram bot was not directly accessing the APIs of the CoWIN database.

As per a report by Kerala-based Malayala Manorama, if the mobile number of a person was entered, the above details were provided as a reply in an instant by Telegram. The details could be accessed even if the Aadhar number was entered instead of the mobile number, the report added.

Passport numbers of people who updated CoWIN for travelling abroad were leaked. The Manorama report also said that since many members of a family registered themselves on the portal under a single phone number, their details were also available on Telegram.

CoWIN leak: Indian govt refutes Covid vaccine portal data breach reports, orders probe

Marriages in China Witness A Historic Low

China is witnessing a historic low in the number of marriages as the country deals with a declining birth rate and a falling population.

Only 6.83 million marriage registrations in 2022

According to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs, only 6.83 million couples completed their marriage registrations in 2022, down about 800,000 from the previous year.

There are two reasons for the declining number of marriages in China. The first is the decades of policies designed to limit population growth which has translated to fewer young people of marriageable age.
The second reason is the changing attitudes toward marriage, especially among young women.

Government initiative to push up the numbers

In May, the government announced that it would launch pilot projects in over 20 cities to build a new-era marriage and childbearing culture.
The projects will focus on tasks such as prompting people to get married and have children at an appropriate age.
