A declining birth rate

China is witnessing a historic low in the number of marriages as the country deals with a declining birth rate and a falling population.

Only 6.83 million marriage registrations in 2022

According to China's Ministry of Civil Affairs, only 6.83 million couples completed their marriage registrations in 2022, down about 800,000 from the previous year.

Why are the numbers declining?

There are two reasons for the declining number of marriages in China. The first is the decades of policies designed to limit population growth which has translated to fewer young people of marriageable age. The second reason is the changing attitudes toward marriage, especially among young women.

Government initiative to push up the numbers

In May, the government announced that it would launch pilot projects in over 20 cities to build a new-era marriage and childbearing culture. The projects will focus on tasks such as prompting people to get married and have children at an appropriate age.
