An Indian-origin man in the United States was given a life sentence without parole after his conviction on murder charges for deliberately ramming his car into a vehicle that killed three 16-year-old boys and seriously injured three other teens after they played a “doorbell” prank on him. California resident Anurag Chandra, 45, was convicted in April of three counts of murder, three counts of attempted murder, and a special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. The victims were identified as Daniel Hawkins, Jacob Ivascu, and Drake Ruiz, all aged 16. Those injured were an 18-year-old boy who was the driver of the vehicle as well as two other boys ages 13 and 14. It took the jury in Riverside Country only three hours to return guilty verdicts against Chandra, PTI news agency reported. The probe revealed that Chandra deliberately crashed his car into the vehicle carrying the teens. The incident The crash happened on January 19, 2020, in Temescal Canyon Road. An investigation by the California Highway Patrol revealed that the teens were having a sleepover and ultimately dared one of the friends to do a “doorbell ditch,” so they drove to a nearby house. Once reaching the house, one of the boys rang the doorbell of a home on Modjeska Summit Road and ran back to their car. Chandra, the occupant of the house chased after the teens’ vehicle in his car. As the man pursued the victims, he re-ended the Prius and sideswiped their vehicle until they were forced to stop. The teens made a U-turn to escape but Chandra continued his pursuit. When both the vehicles approached Squaw Mountain Road, Chandra increased his speed to 99 mph, then intentionally rammed his car into the back of the Prius, causing it to veer off the road and into a tree. The six teens were in a 2002 Toyota Prius car that was forced off the road by Chandra, resulting in the car slamming into a tree on the east side of the roadway. The 45-year-old left the scene of the incident and returned home without reporting what happened. In a separate case, Chandra also pleaded guilty to misdemeanour charges of spousal battery and child endangerment and received credit for time already served. The 45-year-old has been in custody at the Robert Presley Detention Centre in Riverside since his arrest on January 20, 2020, in connection with the homicide case. Europe is facing record-breaking temperatures due to the Cerberus heatwave which is showing no signs of abating. According to media reports on Sunday (July 16), southern and eastern Europe will continue to swelter. For several days, Italy, Spain and Greece have been experiencing high temperatures. On the other hand, Croatia, France and Turkey could also face temperatures of around 40°C, a report by Euronews.green said. The European Space Agency (ESA) is tracking Cerberus. The ESA had earlier warned that the heatwave would also be felt in parts of northern Europe. What is Cerberus? The Euronews.green report said that extreme temperatures have hit Europe this year as the world swelters through the El Nino pattern. However, the latest spike (in temperatures) has been due to the Cerberus heatwave. The Italian Meteorological Society named the heatwave after the mythical monster, Cerberus. The report said that the extreme heatwave driven by Cerberus is forecast to hit the Mediterranean for around two weeks. The affected regions In Italy, the health ministry issued a red alert for 16 cities, including the capital Rome, Bologna and France for the weekend. Citing local media, a report by BBC on Sunday said the heatwave is expected to continue the next week with 48°C possible in Sardinia - a temperature that would fall short of a European record high of 48.8°C recorded in Sicily in August 2021. According to the Italian weather service, Sardinia would be at the epicentre of the upcoming heatwave. Speaking to BBC, Italian meteorologist Giulio Betti said that temperatures would reach a peak between 19 and 23 July - not only in Italy but also in Greece, Turkey and the Balkans. "Several local heat records within these areas may well be broken during those days," Betti added. In Spain, the country's weather service said that temperatures could potentially hit 45°C in the southeastern areas of the Iberian Peninsula, which are under an alert for extreme heat. Meanwhile, in Greece, a heatwave is forecast to reach up to 44°C in some parts of the country, the Euronews.green report said. Authorities banned access to nature reserves and forests to reduce the risk of wildfires, while municipalities opened air-conditioned areas in public buildings for people to shelter from the heat, the report added. Will the heatwave end soon? Spain's weather service said that on Wednesday, temperatures are expected to drop overall with the arrival of cool winds from the north and east. And a report by Sky News on Saturday said that while some relief is there in the coming days for the Iberian Peninsula, other European countries will sweat through the weekend. United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Sunday (July 16) that redoubling support for Ukraine was the single best way to aid the global economy, adding there was a massive difference that foreign assistance was making to the war-torn country.

United States Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Sunday (July 16) that redoubling support for Ukraine was the single best way to aid the global economy, adding there was a massive difference that foreign assistance was making to the war-torn country. Speaking on the sidelines of the G20 finance minister summit in the Indian state of Gujarat, Yellen said, "Ending this war is first and foremost a moral imperative. But it's also the single best thing we can do for the global economy." "Budgetary support is critical to Ukraine's resistance," Yellen told reporters in Gujarat's Gandhinagar. "By helping keep the economy and the government running, we are giving Ukraine the support it needs so it can fight for freedom and its sovereignty," she added. The US treasury secretary also highlighted that one of her government's core goals was to combat Russia's efforts to evade Washington's sanctions. Yellen's remarks came four days after leaders of G7 promised to support Ukraine for as long as it took to defeat the Russian offensive. A report by the news agency AFP said the G7 plan provides a framework under which individual countries would agree to bilateral deals with Ukraine detailing the weapons they would give and the response they would make if Russia ups the ante. Eager to work with China on areas of mutual interest Yellen also said on Sunday that she was eager to work with China in areas of mutual interest, including debt restructurings for poorer countries. Yellen said that her visit to Beijing last week helped put the US-China relationship on "surer footing" and that the world's two biggest economies had an obligation to the world "to cooperate on areas of mutual concern". "There is much more work to do. But I believe this trip was an important start. I am eager to build on the groundwork that we laid in Beijing to mobilise further action," she told reporters in Gandhinagar. The treasury secretary also said she would continue to push hard at the G20 finance minister summit for the full and timely participation of all bilateral official creditors on pending debt restructurings. Pakistani citizen Ameer Ali, whose family recently set a world record for having the same birthday, said that all his children were born naturally. The Mangi family from Larkana city shares the same birthday on August 1, according to the Guinness World Records on Monday (July 10).

Pakistani citizen Ameer Ali, whose family recently set a world record for having the same birthday, said that all his children were born naturally. The Mangi family from Larkana city shares the same birthday on August 1, according to the Guinness World Records on Monday (July 10). The family consists of Ameer, his wife Khudeja and their seven children who have their birthdays on August 1. As per the Guinness World Records report, Ameer said that he did not intentionally plan for his children to be born on the same day. 'A gift from God' The children of the family are- Sindhoo, female twins Sasui and Sapna, Aamir, Ambar, and male twins Ammar and Ahmar. They are between the ages of 19-30 with Sindhoo being the eldest child. Ameer said that he and Khudeja were equally surprised when each successive birth occurred on the same date. The couple saw this as a "gift from God." The report said that none of the children were delivered prematurely via caesarean section, nor was Khudeja’s labour ever induced early. August 1 is even more special for Ameer and Khudeja as it’s also their wedding anniversary. They were married on this date in 1991, one year before their eldest daughter Sindhoo was born. Ameer said he was surprised and delighted after Sindhoo was born on August 1, sharing the same birthday as him and his wife. The twin boys Ammar and Ahmar were born in 2003, five years after twin girls Sasui and Sapna were born. This is the fifth verified example of a mother producing two sets of twins with coincident birthdays, equalling the record for the most twin siblings born on the same day. Another record set by family The Mangi family children also hold the record for the most siblings born on the same day. This record was previously held by five children from the Cummins family in the United States- who were all born on February 20. The children in the Cummins family were born between 1952 and 1966. Azerbaijan said on Saturday (July 15) that Russia and Armenia were not fulfilling the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave ceasefire deal. A statement issued by Azerbaijan's foreign ministry said, "Armenia has not fulfilled many provisions of the statement, and Russia has not ensured the full implementation of the statement within its obligations." The remark comes hours after the European Union (EU) urged Azerbaijan and Armenia to refrain from "violence and harsh rhetoric". Following heavy fighting and a ceasefire brokered by Russia, Azerbaijan in 2020 took over areas that had been controlled by ethnic Armenians in and around the mountain enclave. The two countries have been discussing a peace deal in which Russia is also pushing to retain a leading role. 'Real progress depends on...': EU Council chief EU Council President Charles Michel, who hosted Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan for talks in Brussels, said the real progress would depend on the next steps that would need to be taken soon. "As a matter of priority, violence and harsh rhetoric should stop in order to provide the proper environment for peace and normalisation talks," Michel said and pointed out that the population on the ground needed reassurances, first and foremost regarding their rights and security. The talks in Brussels on Saturday were aimed at drawing a line under more than 30 years of hostilities. Michel also said that he expressed the EU's encouragement for Azerbaijan to talk directly to the Karabakh Armenians to develop confidence between the parties. According to a report by the news agency Reuters, Armenia said the proposed peace treaty should provide special rights for them and guarantee their security. Russia ready to organise three-way meeting with Armenia, Azerbaijan Russia said on Saturday that it was ready to organise a three-way meeting with Armenia and Azerbaijan at the level of the countries' foreign ministers, and this could be followed up with a Moscow summit to sign a peace treaty. In a statement, the Russian foreign ministry said an important part of this pact should be "reliable and clear guarantees of the rights and security of the Armenians of Karabakh" and implementation of earlier agreements between Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. Reacting to Russia's offer, Azerbaijan said the statement caused disappointment and misunderstanding and contradicted Moscow's declaration of supporting Baku's territorial integrity. Scientists have said that the sun's activity is peaking sooner than expected. According to a report by CNN on Friday (July 14), initially, the peak activity was forecast to begin in July 2025, but now experts believe the peak is more likely to take place in mid-to-late 2024.

Scientists have said that the sun's activity is peaking sooner than expected. According to a report by CNN on Friday (July 14), initially, the peak activity was forecast to begin in July 2025, but now experts believe the peak is more likely to take place in mid-to-late 2024. Every 11 years, the sun experiences periods of low and high solar activity that is associated with the amount of sunspots on its surface. Throughout a solar cycle, the sun would transition from a calm to an intense and active period. The report said that during the peak period, the sun’s magnetic poles flip. Current solar cycle full of activity The report added that Solar Cycle 25 - which is the current solar cycle - has been full of activity, more so than expected. Scientists at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado tracked more sunspots than those counted at the peak of the previous cycle. Speaking to CNN, scientist Mark Miesch said that no two solar cycles are the same. “This solar maximum is the space weather equivalent of hurricane season. It’s when we see the biggest storms. But unlike hurricane season, which lasts a few months, solar maximum lasts a few years,” Miesch added. The report highlighted that as solar maximum nears, sunspot clumps would form with increasingly greater frequency leading to a boost of activity. “As we become more dependent on technology, on electrical power grids, on satellites, on aircraft and on GPS, the impacts of space weather increase because these are the kinds of systems that are affected by solar storms,” Miesch also said. The predictions The new predictions for solar maximum were led by Scott McIntosh, deputy director of the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and Robert Leamon, an associate research scientist at the Goddard Planetary Heliophysics Institute, along with their collaborators. The CNN report said that rather than tracking sunspots, the researchers focused on what they called the terminator- it is a point when activity from one solar cycle disappears from the sun's surface, followed by a sharp increase in solar activity in the new cycle. Sunspots are regarded as a keystone of solar cycle prediction, but Robert Leamon believes that tracking the magnetic activity that leads to the sunspots could yield more accurate predictions. And once the solar maximum is reached, the activity can persist for years. Leamon said that the number of solar flares peaks after the maximum. “The peak of consequence is after maximum by a couple of years, so the biggest effects here on Earth will happen after maximum,” he added. "The limited palette for example has been analysed from actual painted surfaces but also from pigments and painting tools retrieved on site," the research said.&nbsp;

"However, most of these studies took place in museums while the painted surfaces, preserved in funerary chapels and temples, remained somewhat estranged from this primary physical understanding," it added.&nbsp;

<h2>The workflow</h2>

"The Pharaonic Civilization offers the most extended cultural continuity of the ancient world. Its highly formalized painting style is easily recognized. This consistency mainly derives from aesthetic choices but also from an organized and regulated workflow that has been theoretically reconstructed by different authors," the research said.&nbsp;

It is assumed that the work started with a preliminary sketch drawn&nbsp;in red ochre on the plastered and smoothed wall. This was followed by the application of white or coloured backgrounds, at times leaving a reserve for pictorial details, according to the research.&nbsp;

"Afterward, colour came, commonly with pigment mixtures and layered applications. As the last step, the final outline and details were drawn, mainly with red ochre. In a final and vital stage, paint spilling over the outline was overpainted with opaque white," the research added.&nbsp;

It said that this workflow was mainly based on the study of incomplete works in tomb chapels&nbsp;as well as artistic projects on ostraca, pottery sherds used for sketches dating to the 18th and 19th dynasties.&nbsp;

The alterations to specific details of the paintings, during or after their executions were also reported but seemed to remain rather seldom.&nbsp;

<h2>A third arm for Menna</h2>

Take a look at this picture

The research cited an example&nbsp;of the painted tomb chapel of Menna which was discovered in 1888. The painted tomb "is indeed visible to the naked eye (Figure A). But that&nbsp;was surely not the case in ancient times."

"It has probably been made visible due to chemical interactions between the ancient materials and the migration of chemical compounds to the surface."

Figure B showed&nbsp;surface of the corrected area reacts with fluorescence under ultraviolet lighting&nbsp; This indicated the presence of a&nbsp;pecific organic binder or degradation product.

"This alteration is visible in a scene showing Menna and his wife adoring Osiris. This rite of adoration is visually made evident by the fact that Menna raises his two hands in front of his face. However, close observation of this area detects the presence of a third hand, somewhat hidden under the white surface layer that is used as a background," the research also said.&nbsp;

If this ghost hand and arm were easily detected, they remained puzzling because the factual reasoning behind this alteration remains difficult to define precisely.

The recent outbreak of wildfires in western Canada is sending plumes of unhealthy smoke into the United States. According to a report by CNN on Friday (July 14), the smoke is moving into the Northern Plains and will spread into the Upper Midwest. The smoke could also cause issues in Iowa and Illinois, including Chicago. On Friday, there was a drop in air quality in parts of Montana and North Dakota to code red, and to code orange in Minnesota, the report said citing airnow.gov. The report added that parts of the US would be at risk of smoke for the foreseeable future depending on weather patterns and fire flareups as Canada is experiencing its worst fire season on record. Over 23 million acres have been burnt so far this year. 19-yr-old firefighter killed; PM Trudeau pays tribute A 19-year-old woman firefighter was killed in western Canada on Thursday after a tree fell on her and she was trapped under it while battling one of the wildfires. In a statement, the federal police said the firefighter was found by her team after being found trapped under a fallen tree while clearing brush in a remote area where a small fire had broken out. She was airlifted to a hospital where she died. According to the British Columbia General Employees Union (BCGEU), the incident occurred outside the town of Revelstoke in British Columbia. This was the first death reported on the ground since the beginning of the fire season. Paying tributes to the firefighter, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, "At this incredibly difficult time, I’m sending my deepest condolences to her family, her friends, and her fellow firefighters." "We must never forget the risks these heroes take every time they run toward the danger. To firefighters in British Columbia and across the country who are doing just that to keep us safe: Thank you. We are inspired by your courage, and grateful for your service," Prime Minister Trudeau added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community.
