Chinese President Xi Jinping said on Wednesday (July 19) that his government would decide how it will address climate change. Citing Chinese state media, a report by The Washington Post said that President Xi did not address his remark to US climate envoy John Kerry, who was in Beijing to revive climate talks between the US and China. Instead, he gathered top officials from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to set his own environmental agenda without any input from Washington. Xi said that China would pursue its commitments “unswervingly,” but the pathways, intensity, and pace of such efforts “should and must be” determined without outside interference. Speaking to The Washington Post, Li Shuo, a senior policy adviser for Greenpeace East Asia, said that the Chinese president's remarks delivered at the time Kerry was in Beijing were no coincidence. Shuo said Xi showed that China would decide its own path "in achieving carbon goals and will not be ordered about by others." More work needed to build US-China climate relations: Kerry Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, US climate envoy Kerry said that more work was needed to build climate relations between the US and China. "We - our team and the United States administration - came to Beijing in order to unstick what has been stuck since almost last August." "This is our first in-person meeting since that time, and we're here to break new ground," Kerry added. Climate talks between Washington and Beijing were suspended last year following the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taiwan. Kerry also told reporters on Wednesday that despite the hiatus of the last year, the two countries found many points of agreement during three days of cordial but frank discussions, and they planned to work "intensively" in the weeks ahead as they prepare for COP28 climate talks in Dubai. "We are trying to work with China to figure out the path ahead. China is working hard to try to develop some of those new technologies as well as deploy those renewables that will become clean energy in the future. We look forward to working with China to accelerate that," the US climate envoy added. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Amid global climate crisis, China says it will deal with climate in its own way

The family of deceased Sri Lankan woman Ratnayake Liyanage Wishma Sandamali, who died in March 2021 at an immigration centre in Japan, is suing the Japanese government for damages, alleging that it failed to provide Wishma with proper food and healthcare.

The family of deceased Sri Lankan woman Ratnayake Liyanage Wishma Sandamali, who died in March 2021 at an immigration centre in Japan, is suing the Japanese government for damages, alleging that it failed to provide Wishma with proper food and healthcare. According to a report by BBC early Wednesday (July 19), Wishma's sister Wayomi said she would have not died if she got the right medication. "We want justice for our sister. The Japanese government is responsible for what happened to her," Wayomi told the network, adding there should be a change in the Japanese system so that inmates in detention centres are protected. Teacher went to Japan on student visa Wishma, who was a teacher, arrived in Japan in June 2017 on a 15-month student visa, attending a Japanese language school in Chiba prefecture. She spoke to her sisters Wayomi and Poornima over the phone every day. Wishma later moved in with her Sri Lankan boyfriend, whom she met in Japan. Citing an investigative report by the Immigration Services Agency of Japan in August 2021, BBC reported early Wednesday that Wishma stopped attending classes in May 2018 and was expelled by her school the following month. She then started working at a factory Shizuoka and applied for refugee status in September. However, her application was denied in January 2019. And the following August, the woman turned herself to the police, alleging domestic abuse by her boyfriend. But Wishma was arrested for overstaying her visa and detained in Nagoya. She had been in an immigration detention centre for seven months and died on March 6, 2021, aged 33. The investigative report said that she had been suffering from ill health since January 2021 and her condition began deteriorating. Wishma was the 18th foreigner to die in Japanese immigration detention since 2007. The BBC report said that she lost 20kg in detention due to a stress-induced stomach condition, and was vomiting blood in her final days. The report added that the 33-year-old repeatedly asked to be taken to the hospital and was granted provisional release, but her requests were denied. 'When we saw her...': Victim's kin recount seeing her body When Wayomi and Poornima went to Japan in May 2021 to identify their sister's body, they could not recognise her. "When we saw Wishma, her face looked like our grandmother's," Wayomi told BBC. This was the first time they saw Wishma in two and a half years. They were unable to bring her body home because of Covid restrictions. Wishma was cremated in Nagoya. The sisters attended the funeral, but their mother did not. The investigative report in 2021 said that the staff at the detention centre showed a lack of awareness of human rights, and had failed to share details of Wishma's illness. The report added that some detention officers thought the detainees were faking illness to get provisional release. Prosecutors, meanwhile, declined to bring charges against 13 officers at the Nagoya detention centre over her death. Yakub Zakriev, a nephew of Chechnya's leader Ramzan Kadyrov, has been appointed the new head of Russia's Danone subsidiary after the Kremlin ordered the state to take temporary control of the French yoghurt maker's business in Russia.

Yakub Zakriev, a nephew of Chechnya's leader Ramzan Kadyrov, has been appointed the new head of Russia's Danone subsidiary after the Kremlin ordered the state to take temporary control of the French yoghurt maker's business in Russia. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Wednesday (July 19), Zakriev, 32, a deputy prime minister of Chechnya and the republic's agriculture minister, took the post of general director of Danone Russia on Tuesday. His appointment was confirmed by Chechnya's minister for national policy, foreign relations, and information Akhmed Dudayev. Taking to Telegram, Dudayev said, "Choosing him as general director of Danone Russia shows that representatives of the team of Chechen President and Hero of Russia Ramzan Akhmatovich Kadyrov are talented and successful managers." Dudayev added the 32-year-old has experience working in the most responsible positions. The end of a 30-year Russian experiment by Danone The Reuters report on Wednesday said that the appointment of Zakriev marked the end of a 30-year Russian experiment by Danone which opened a dairy store near Red Square in 1992, a year after the fall of the Soviet Union. As the chaos in the 1990s ended, Russia and the former Soviet Union were perceived as major potential markets, with relatively low consumption of dairy products by European standards along with explosive purchasing power growth. Danone had sought alliances with big local players during the boom years and went on to gain at least a fifth of Russia's dairy market. And as Russia launched its special military operation in February 2022, Danone said in October it would relinquish control of its dairy food business in Russia. Last Sunday, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree which stated that the government had taken control of Danone's Russian subsidiary along with a brewery owned by beer company Carlsberg. Speaking to Reuters, a person familiar with the developments said that Danone was closely following the situation in Russia with a focus on the safety of its 7,500 staff. The person added that the company was continuing to review legal options after the seizure of its Russian assets. Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's bail was extended in three cases regarding violence outside the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) and the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's bail was extended in three cases regarding violence outside the Federal Judicial Complex (FJC) and the Islamabad High Court (IHC). On Wednesday (July 19), an Islamabad anti-terrorism court (ATC) extended Khan's bail in these three cases until July 26, according to a report by Dawn. In the last proceedings, the court issued bailable arrest warrants for Khan, the chairperson of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), and summoned him on Wednesday. Khan reached the courtroom accompanied by his legal team. The Dawn report said that as the hearing in the case began, ATC Judge Abul Hasnaat Muhammad Zulfikar addressed the police, asking them to declare the suspect innocent if he was innocent or present any evidence they had. The judge warned that if the investigation was conducted properly, he would personally summon the police inspector general. Khan's lawyer argued that the PTI chairperson was wrongly implicated in the cases. “If there is nothing against him, then let us know, and we will withdraw our bail plea,” the lawyer added. As both sides furnished their arguments, Judge Zulfikar extended Khan's bail in the three cases. Toshakhana case: Islamabad HC reserves verdict on Khan's petition The report also said that the Islamabad High Court reserved its verdict filed by Imran Khan challenging the maintainability of a criminal complaint against him for allegedly concealing details of the Toshakhana gifts. Imran’s counsel, Khawaja Haris, informed the high court that the sessions court pronounced its verdict merely 15 minutes after hearing arguments from the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), without allowing the former prime minister’s legal team to present their version. Haris said their request to postpone the hearing from July 8 to July 10 was also rejected. He argued that if a high court sends a case back to the trial court, it should be referred to a different court instead. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq asked about the next date of the sessions court hearing. The counsel replied that it was fixed for Thursday, the report added. Twenty stray dogs outside India's Mumbai airport have received their identification cards similar to 'Aadhaar', the nation's biometric identification system. Twenty stray dogs outside India's Mumbai airport have received their identification cards similar to 'Aadhaar', the nation's biometric identification system. According to a report by the Times of India (TOI), the "Aadhaar" cards were strung around the scruff of the dogs' necks last Saturday (July 15). The cards carry QR codes which when scanned provide information about the dogs such as name, a feeder's contact, details of vaccination, sterilisation, and medical nuggets if the canines are lost, the report said. The ID cards were provided by a team of regular feeders. BMC vaccinates the tagged dogs The team tagged 20 dogs. The report said that during the tagging process, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) managed to vaccinate these dogs outside Terminal-1 of the airport in the west Indian city. Speaking to TOI, Dr Kalim Pathan, the head of BMC's veterinary health services said a basic health check was also done on the dogs. "The QR code tagging done for dogs outside the airport is a pilot project and we will see how this can be taken forward," Dr Pathan added. The team behind the initiative Akshay Ridlan, an engineer from Sion, devised the idea of unique identification for dogs through an initiative called pawfriend.in. The report said that dog catchers from Yoda, vets from the BMC, and airport officials were a part of the troupe. Speaking to the publication, Ridlan said the team started at around 8.30 am and was chasing the dogs to fix the QR code tags and vaccinate them. Ridlan said that if a pet is lost or is relocated, the QR codes can help reunite it with its family. He added that the codes can also help the BMC maintain a centralised database of stray dogs in Mumbai. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The White House on Tuesday (July 18) announced a proposed 'Cyber Trust Mark' intended to show that connected devices meet American security standards. The increasing number of technologies, from baby monitors to security cameras, make up the Internet of Things that officials warned can pose increased cybersecurity threats. In a briefing, officials announced that as per the new programme, companies would be able to qualify display labels on their products signifying they meet certain cybersecurity standards. Anne Neuberger, White House deputy national security adviser for cyber and emerging technology, said, "We now routinely rely on internet and Bluetooth-enabled devices for tasks as basic as adjusting our thermostat and as complex as securing our homes while we're away." Neuberger warned that poorly secured products can enable attackers to gain footholds in American homes and offices and steal data or cause disruption. Programme hopefully to start next year According to a report by the news agency AFP on Tuesday, the programme set up under the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), is hoped to be up and running by next year after a public comment period. "Consumers can have peace of mind that the products that they're bringing into their homes adhere to widely accepted security and privacy standards," FCC chair Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said of US-endorsed cyber trust labels. Rosenworcel added that product makers would be able to use the marks to differentiate offerings in the marketplace when they meet the standards The companies taking part in the programme Officials said that the companies taking part in the programme include Amazon, Google, LG Electronics, and Samsung. Citing data from cybersecurity firm SonicWall, the report also said that the amount of malicious software aimed at devices in the internet-of-things "jumped dramatically", with many of the attacks centred in North America. Democratic presidential hopeful Robert F Kennedy Jr. on Saturday (July 15) slammed the allegations of racism and anti-Semitism after he reportedly claimed that Covid might have been "ethnically targetted" to spare the Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people.

Democratic presidential hopeful Robert F Kennedy Jr. on Saturday (July 15) slammed the allegations of racism and anti-Semitism after he reportedly claimed that Covid might have been "ethnically targetted" to spare the Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese people. According to a report by the New York Post, Kennedy addressed a press event in New York City on Tuesday where he said, "COVID-19, there is an argument that it is ethnically targeted. COVID-19 attacks certain races disproportionately." "COVID-19 is targeted to attack Caucasians and black people. The people who are most immune are Ashkenazi Jews and Chinese," he added, as per the report. Facing severe backlash, Kennedy tweeted on Saturday that the story by the New York Post was mistaken, and he never suggested Covid was targetted to spare Jews. The @nypost story is mistaken. I have never, ever suggested that the COVID-19 virus was targeted to spare Jews. Kennedy Jr (@RobertKennedyJr) July 15, 2023 × "I accurately pointed out — during an off-the-record conversation — that the US and other governments are developing ethnically targeted bioweapons and that a 2021 study of the COVID-19 virus shows that COVID-19 appears to disproportionately affect certain races since the furin cleave docking site is most compatible with Blacks and Caucasians and least compatible with ethnic Chinese, Finns, and Ashkenazi Jews," he tweeted. "In that sense, it serves as a kind of proof of concept for ethnically targeted bioweapons," Kennedy further said and shared a link to the study. A reputation as an anti-vaxxer Kennedy had built a reputation as an anti-vaxxer even before the Covid pandemic started. According to a report by the Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH), he was among 12 people responsible for the majority of Covid conspiracy theories online. The CCDH analysed over 800,000 anti-vaccine posts shared on Facebook and Twitter between February 1 and March 16, 2021. The centre found that 65 per cent of this content could be attributed to the "disinformation dozen". On Facebook alone, the CCDH found that those 12 people were responsible for 73 per cent of the anti-vaccine content on the platform. Democrat slams Kennedy: Remarks 'amplify sinister and unfounded notions...' Marianne Williamson, another Democratic presidential hopeful, strongly denounced Kennedy's remarks on Tuesday. British Defence Minister Ben Wallace said on Saturday (July 15) that he would step down as a member of parliament (MP) in the next national election, and would leave the government when Prime Minister Rishi Sunak carries out his next cabinet reshuffle.

British Defence Minister Ben Wallace said on Saturday (July 15) that he would step down as a member of parliament (MP) in the next national election, and would leave the government when Prime Minister Rishi Sunak carries out his next cabinet reshuffle. Speaking to The Sunday Times, Wallace said, "I'm not standing next time," but ruled out going prematurely and forcing a by-election. Wallace said he told his plans (to step down as MP) to Sunak on June 16 but hoped to announce them over the summer before leaks forced his hand. A member of the Conservative Party, Wallace has been the MP for Wyre and Preston North and its predecessor constituency in northwest England since 2005. He told The Sunday Times that his greatest concern was the danger of military conflict with Russia, adding Britain could be drawn into more conflicts. 'If Putin loses in Ukraine...': Wallace Wallace said that if Russian President Vladimir Putin loses in Ukraine, he would be deeply wounded. "He’s still got an air force and he’s still got a navy — and we see his navy do quite aggressive manoeuvres. Putin is not done with us yet. There is an ability for him, in the next three or four years, to lash out," he said. On Wednesday, Wallace warned Ukraine that its international allies were not Amazon and Kyiv needed to show gratitude for weapons donations. Speaking at the sidelines of the NATO summit in Lithuania, Wallace recalled that when he travelled to Ukraine last year, he was presented with a list of weapons. "You know, we're not Amazon. I told them that last year when I drove 11 hours to be given a list." Later in the day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he did not understand the British minister's comments. "We were always grateful to the UK, prime ministers and the minister of defence because the people are always supporting us. I didn't know what he meant and how else we should be grateful. Maybe the minister wants something special but we have wonderful relations," Zelensky said. Britain has been one of the strongest supporters of Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian offensive in February last year. Prime Minister Sunak had earlier said that Britain and its allies would double down on support for Ukraine. WATCH WION LIVE HERE You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. The United Nations on Monday (July 18) handed over a vessel that will take on board oil from a decaying tanker in the Red Sea off Yemen. According to a report by the news agency AFP, the handover ceremony took place aboard the Nautica, which is being renamed Yemen. The report said that soon, an operation is expected to begin pumping 1.14 million barrels of crude oil to the Nautica from the FSO Safer. The UN-owned ship arrived off Yemen on Sunday. The UN hoped for a low-key ceremony on Monday, but the Huthis invited high-ranking officials from various ministries as well as the press to board the ship. The event highlighted close cooperation between the UN and the Huthis. David Gressly, the UN resident coordinator for Yemen, signed the handover papers along with Edrees al-Shami, the Huthi-appointed executive general manager of Safer Company (SEPOC), which is the Yemeni oil and gas company. Gressly said the ship transfer was organised with the participation of all parties to Yemen's conflict. Speaking to AFP, Huthis' transportation minister, Abdulwahab al-Dhura said, "The handover is to the Safer company (SEPOC) which is located in Sanaa. So Safer in Sanaa is authorised to receive the tanker." Oil to stay on Nautica for foreseeable future The Nautica is expected to moor alongside the Safer so that pumping can begin by the end of this week. If the transfer operation is a success, the oil would stay on the Nautica for the foreseeable future. The ownership of oil is disputed by Yemen's warring factions. Since 2015, the UN and the Huthis have been fighting a Saudi-led coalition backing the internationally recognised government based in the southern Yemeni city of Aden. The Huthis have earlier said they want to sell the oil and use the revenue to cover their employees' salaries. They also called for the completion of onshore storage facilities where the crude could potentially go.
