India's recent acquisition of the AH-64E Apache attack helicopters for the Army, with the first batch anticipated this month, has been touted as a significant boost to its defence capabilities, particularly along the western border. However, beneath the gleaming promise of enhanced firepower lies a complex narrative of delays, escalating costs, and a stark reminder of the strategic vulnerabilities inherent in over-reliance on foreign military acquisitions. While the Apache undeniably brings cutting-edge technology to the Indian Army, a closer examination reveals a compelling argument for accelerating indigenous defence manufacturing. The arrival of the Apache Guardian, a multirole combat helicopter lauded for its advanced weaponry and battlefield prowess, is indeed a substantial upgrade. It's formidable 30 mm M230 Chain Gun, Hellfire and Stinger missile capabilities, and the revolutionary AN/APG-78 Longbow radar—capable of tracking 128 targets simultaneously—promise unparalleled offensive and surveillance capabilities. Features like the Modernised Target Acquisition and Designation System (MTADS), night vision sensors, and seamless integration with drones further enhance its operational effectiveness in modern warfare scenarios, offering critical air support in challenging terrains like deserts. The formation of the Army’s 451 Aviation Squadron in Nagtalao, Jodhpur, specifically for these helicopters, underscores the strategic intent behind their deployment. Furthermore, the deal aligns with India’s 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, with Tata Boeing Aerospace Limited (TBAL) already producing Apache fuselages in Hyderabad, a step towards fostering domestic defence production.Despite these clear advantages, the Apache programme has been plagued by considerable setbacks, raising serious questions about its overall efficacy and value for money. The initial excitement has been tempered by a staggering 15-month delay in delivery, pushing back the operational readiness of the dedicated squadron. This delay, attributed to supply chain and technical issues, meant the 451 Aviation Squadron was formed in March 2024 but remained without its primary aircraft for over a year, a costly period of idleness.Perhaps the most glaring concern is the alarming escalation in cost. The price per Apache helicopter has surged by a staggering 62% in just five years, jumping from ₹678 crore for the Indian Air Force's 2015 acquisition to ₹1,100 crore in the Army's 2020 deal. This exponential increase, coupled with accusations of past overcharging by Boeing for spare parts to the US Army, fuels anxieties about potential exploitation. Moreover, the exorbitant operating cost of ₹4.6 lakh per flight hour and the significant maintenance demands (35 hours of maintenance per flying hour) paint a picture of a resource-intensive asset that will continue to drain national coffers long after its initial purchase.Beyond financial concerns, the strategic implications of foreign dependency are stark. The 18-month delivery delay, particularly during heightened tensions with Pakistan and crucial operations like "Operation Sindoor," exposed critical gaps in India's defence preparedness. Furthermore, the low ranking in the US Defense Priorities and Allocations Systems Program (DPAS) and the restrictive International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) highlight how geopolitical dynamics and foreign regulations can directly impede India's defence autonomy, dictating what can be upgraded or how the acquired equipment can be utilised.Technical limitations also cast a shadow. Despite their advanced capabilities, Apaches reportedly struggle in high-altitude environments above 15,000 feet, rendering them less effective in critical regions like Ladakh. The incident of an Apache being stranded in Ladakh, requiring disassembly for transport, underscores this operational constraint, forcing the Army to restrict their deployment primarily to desert zones. Recent reports of emergency landings due to power failures and malfunctions in high heat further raise safety and reliability concerns, mirroring issues faced by the US Army itself. The fragmented acquisition strategy, with the Air Force and Army procuring Apaches separately, has led to costly duplication in training, simulators, and support systems, adding an estimated ₹2,500 crore to the overall expense. The highly trained Army pilots and technicians, now idle due to delayed deliveries, risk skill fade, a direct consequence of inefficient planning. In contrast, India's indigenous Light Combat Helicopter (LCH) Prachand presents a compelling alternative. At roughly half the cost of an Apache ($50 million per unit), the Prachand has demonstrated superior high-altitude performance, operating effectively at 21,300 feet in Siachen. With 50% Indian-made components and a recent approval for 156 units, the LCH Prachand not only offers a more cost-effective solution but also significantly bolsters the 'Make in India' initiative, reducing critical foreign dependence. The global trend of nations re-evaluating Apache purchases, with even a top U.S. Army General questioning the older models' "war-winning capability," further underscores the need for India to critically assess its acquisition strategies. The Apache acquisition, while bringing undeniable technological advancements, serves as a powerful cautionary tale. The soaring costs, debilitating delays, and strategic constraints underscore the urgent necessity for India to prioritise and accelerate its indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities. The LCH Prachand is not just an alternative; it is a symbol of India's potential for self-reliance in defence. True national security in the 21st century lies not in endless foreign procurements, but in cultivating the domestic strength to design, develop, and deploy its own cutting-edge defence solutions, ensuring both military effectiveness and strategic autonomy.

India's Apache gambit: A costly lesson in self-reliance

The Indian Air Force is exploring the acquisition of a powerful new weapon system that could significantly enhance its long-range strike capabilities. The Air Lora air-launched ballistic missile, developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), represents a major advancement in modern aerial warfare technology.
What is the Air Lora Missile?
The Air Lora is essentially a missile that fighter jets can carry and launch from the air to hit targets on the ground. Think of it as a highly sophisticated rocket that can be fired from an aircraft instead of from the ground. This air-launched version is based on the proven ground-launched LORA (Long Range Artillery) missile system that has been in service since 2007. The missile belongs to a category called Air-Launched Ballistic Missiles (ALBMs), which follow a high, arcing flight path similar to traditional ballistic missiles but with the advantage of being launched from aircraft that can position themselves strategically before firing.
Technical specifications

Physical Dimensions:
- Length: Approximately 17 feet (5.2 meters) - roughly the length of a large car - Diameter: 2 feet (0.625 meters) - about the width of a standard door - Launch Weight: 3,500 pounds (1,600 kilograms) - equivalent to a small car
Warhead options:
- Blast-fragmentation warhead: 1,300 pounds (570-600 kg) - designed to destroy soft targets and personnel - Deep-penetration warhead: 800-880 pounds (400 kg) - built to punch through reinforced concrete bunkers and hardened facilities - High-explosive warhead: Various weight options available
Performance capabilities:
- Range: Over 250 miles (400+ kilometers) when air-launched - potentially much further than ground-launched versions due to the aircraft's speed and altitude - Speed: Supersonic - travels faster than the speed of sound - Accuracy: Less than 33 feet (10 meters) circular error probability - meaning it can hit within a small circle around its target - Flight Time: Can reach targets within minutes of launch
How is it launched?
The Air Lora missile is designed to be mounted under the wings or fuselage of various aircraft types. It has been successfully tested on several platforms:
Compatible aircraft:
- F-16 Fighting Falcon fighters (completed trials) - F-15 Eagle fighters - Boeing P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft - Su-30 MKI (potential integration for Indian Air Force)
Launch process:
1. The missile is mounted on external pylons (attachment points) under the aircraft 2. Target coordinates can be programmed while the missile is still attached to the aircraft 3. The aircraft flies to a safe distance from enemy defenses 4. The pilot launches the missile using aircraft controls 5. Once released, the missile follows a ballistic trajectory to its target 6. The aircraft can immediately turn away and return to base
Key advantages
Stand-off capability: The missile allows aircraft to attack targets from far beyond the range of enemy air defenses. This means pilots can stay safe while still hitting their targets accurately. Fire-and-forget technology: Once launched, the missile doesn't need any further guidance from the launching aircraft. It uses its own navigation systems to find and hit the target. All-weather operation: The missile can operate effectively day or night and in various weather conditions, including storms and heavy cloud cover. Versatile integration: The system is designed to work with different types of aircraft without requiring major modifications to the plane's existing systems. High survivability: The missile's supersonic speed and ability to maneuver during flight make it very difficult for enemy defenses to intercept.
Advanced technology features

Navigation systems:
- Inertial Navigation System (INS): Uses internal sensors to track its position - Global Positioning System (GPS): Receives satellite signals for precise location data - Terminal TV guidance: Can use visual recognition for final target approach - Anti-jamming capabilities: Resistant to enemy attempts to disrupt its guidance systems Smart targeting: The missile can receive updated target coordinates even while attached to the aircraft, allowing it to hit "pop-up" targets that appear suddenly during a mission.
India's strategic interest
India's interest in the Air Lora builds on an existing partnership between IAI and India's state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). In 2023, these companies signed a cooperation agreement that ensures technology transfer as part of any deal. This means India wouldn't just be buying the missiles - it would also gain the knowledge to potentially manufacture them domestically.
Strategic benefits for India:
- Enhanced long-range strike capability against high-value targets - Reduced risk to pilots and aircraft during missions - Ability to strike targets deep in enemy territory from safe distances - Complement to existing missile systems in the Indian arsenal
Comparison with current systems
The Air Lora would significantly enhance India's existing capabilities. While the Indian Air Force currently uses the Rampage air-launched cruise missile with a 250-kilometer range, the Air Lora's 400+ kilometer range would allow strikes on targets much deeper in enemy territory. For example, aircraft operating from Indian airspace could potentially reach targets as far as major cities in neighboring countries without crossing into hostile airspace.
Combat proven heritage
The ground-launched version of the LORA missile has already seen combat use. Azerbaijan successfully employed LORA missiles during the 2020 Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, demonstrating the system's real-world effectiveness. The missile has also been tested extensively in various conditions, including maritime launches from ships.
Global context
The Air Lora represents part of a growing trend toward air-launched ballistic missiles among modern air forces. As ground-based air defense systems become more sophisticated and dangerous, air forces worldwide are seeking weapons that allow them to strike from greater distances while keeping their aircraft and crews safe. The missile fills a crucial gap in modern warfare, providing a solution for attacking heavily defended targets that would be too dangerous to approach with conventional aircraft-delivered weapons. Its combination of long range, high accuracy, and resistance to interception makes it an attractive option for air forces facing increasingly sophisticated threats.
Conclusion
The Air Lora missile represents a significant advancement in air-launched weaponry, offering the Indian Air Force a powerful new tool for long-range precision strikes. Its combination of advanced technology, proven heritage, and strategic capabilities could provide India with enhanced defensive and deterrent capabilities in an increasingly complex regional security environment. If acquired, the Air Lora would mark another step in India's ongoing modernization of its military capabilities, providing its air force with the ability to strike high-value targets while minimizing risk to personnel and equipment. The potential for technology transfer also aligns with India's broader goals of developing indigenous defense manufacturing capabilities.

The silent hammer: Air Lora poised to redefine IAF's deep strike capability

Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla is currently taking part in a historic mission on the International Space Station (ISS) as part of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4). He is involved in more than 60 scientific experiments, including one that could change the way we understand and treat diabetes—not just for astronauts in space, but also for people on Earth. For a long time, people who rely on insulin to manage diabetes were not allowed to go on space missions. This is because it’s very hard to control blood sugar levels in space, where there is no gravity. But now, the Ax-4 mission is challenging that idea and exploring new ways to make space travel possible for them too. People with insulin-dependent diabetes are usually not allowed on the International Space Station (ISS) because space travel causes major changes in the human body. In zero gravity, food digests differently, insulin may not work the same way, and blood sugar becomes harder to control. Muscles weaken and shrink in space due to lack of gravity, which reduces physical activity—this also affects how the body uses insulin. Even healthy astronauts sometimes show signs of pre-diabetes during long missions because of these changes. Stress, disrupted sleep, and hormonal shifts in space can also push sugar levels up or down. Since there’s no full-time doctor onboard and emergency help is far away, it’s too risky to send someone who needs regular insulin—unless better ways to manage diabetes in space are developed. The 'Suite Ride' project: A move toward greater inclusion One of the main highlights of the Ax-4 mission is a study called "Suite Ride," which focuses on how the body handles glucose (sugar) in space. The goal is to make it safer for people with diabetes to live and work in space one day. Speaking to IndiaToday.in, Dr Mohammad Fityan, Clinical Lead for the Suite Ride project from Burjeel Holdings, said the study will also improve our understanding of diabetes and other conditions linked to blood sugar. Burjeel Holdings, which is working on this research, has teamed up with Axiom Space to find out how insulin and Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs) work in space. Speaking to NDTV at the Pune Emerging Business Conclave, he outlined the comprehensive probe."The AAIB has launched a thorough investigation examining every possibility - sabotage is one of them. CCTV footage is being reviewed, and multiple agencies are working together," Mohol stated to NDTV, emphasising the unprecedented nature of simultaneous dual engine failure.
Black Box Analysis Key
The investigation will intensify once experts decode the recovered black box recordings. The flight data recorder contains critical information and cockpit voice recordings from the aircraft's final moments.Mohol explained that the Cockpit Voice Recorder captured the pilots' final conversation. "Everything will be made clear once the investigation report is complete, which should take about three months," he said, clarifying that all analysis will be conducted domestically without sending the black box abroad.
Technical Investigation
The probe will determine whether the cause was technical - engine malfunction or fuel supply problems. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed 30 seconds after takeoff from Ahmedabad Airport, bound for London Gatwick, with 242 people aboard. This marked the first fatal Boeing 787 accident since 2011 commercial service began, and Air India's first fatal crash since 1985.
Broader Aviation Issues
Minister Mohol also addressed sector challenges, noting 419 technical vacancies at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation that need filling, concerns about airlines overworking pilots, and efforts to make air travel more affordable.
Potential Sabotage Angles Under Investigation
As part of their comprehensive probe, security agencies are examining several potential sabotage scenarios to rule out foul play. These investigation angles include:
1. Fuel Supply Security Under Scrutiny
Intelligence officials have revealed to CNN News18 that investigators are conducting detailed examinations of the aircraft's fuel supply chain to determine if contamination played a role in the crash. This comprehensive review covers every stage of the fuel handling process. The investigation focuses on three critical areas of fuel management. First, authorities are examining fuel sourcing - tracking where the aviation fuel originated and whether it met required quality standards before reaching the airport. Second, they're analysing fuel storage systems at Ahmedabad airport, checking storage tanks and facilities for any signs of contamination or unauthorised access that could have compromised fuel quality.Third, investigators are scrutinising the hydrant fuel system - the network of underground pipes and equipment used to deliver fuel directly from storage tanks to aircraft. Any breach in this system could potentially allow contaminants to enter the fuel supply. The probe extends beyond technical systems to human factors. Security agencies are conducting thorough background checks on all ground staff involved in fuel operations, including fuel truck operators, quality control personnel, and maintenance workers. Additionally, investigators are reviewing contracts with fuel suppliers and service providers to identify any potential security vulnerabilities or suspicious activities. This angle of investigation stems from the understanding that contaminated or adulterated fuel could cause catastrophic engine failure. Aviation fuel must meet extremely strict quality standards, and even minor contamination with water, dirt, or chemicals could lead to engine malfunction or complete failure - potentially explaining the rare dual-engine shutdown that occurred during the AI 171 flight. The forensic review involves laboratory analysis of fuel samples, examination of fuel handling equipment, and verification of fuel quality documentation to ensure no tampering occurred in the supply chain.
2. Aircraft Maintenance and Insider Threats
Investigation teams are closely examining the maintenance history of the crashed Boeing 787 Dreamliner, as these advanced aircraft require complex and frequent servicing to operate safely. Officials are particularly concerned about the possibility of deliberate sabotage by someone with inside access to the aircraft.a.Complex Maintenance RequirementsThe Boeing 787 Dreamliner is a sophisticated aircraft with advanced electronic systems, composite materials, and cutting-edge technology. This complexity means the plane needs regular, detailed maintenance checks by highly trained technicians. Investigators are reviewing whether all required maintenance was properly completed before the flight.b. Insider Sabotage ConcernsSecurity agencies are investigating whether someone with authorized access to the aircraft - such as maintenance workers, ground crew, or airport personnel - may have intentionally caused damage. This type of threat is particularly dangerous because insiders have legitimate access to restricted areas and aircraft systems.c.Key Areas Under InvestigationInvestigators are examining several critical aspects of aircraft maintenance:Overlooked Problems: Teams are checking whether any mechanical faults or warning signs were missed or ignored during routine inspections. Sometimes small issues can escalate into major failures if not addressed properly.Unauthorised Changes: Officials are verifying that only approved, certified aircraft parts were used and that no unauthorised modifications or component replacements occurred. Using incorrect or substandard parts could lead to system failures.Maintenance Records: All maintenance logs and service records are being scrutinised to ensure work was completed according to aviation safety standards and that nothing was falsified or omitted.Tool and Equipment Tracking: Investigators are checking systems that track maintenance tools and equipment to ensure nothing was left inside the aircraft that could cause problems, and that all tools were accounted for after maintenance work.Personnel Background Checks: The backgrounds, credentials, and recent activities of all maintenance technicians and support staff who worked on the aircraft are being thoroughly investigated to identify any potential security risks or suspicious behaviour. This comprehensive approach helps determine whether human error, negligence, or intentional sabotage in the maintenance process contributed to the tragic accident.
3. Digital Attack on Aircraft Systems
Senior intelligence officials are investigating whether the crash could have been caused by a cyber attack - essentially hackers targeting the aircraft's computer systems. Modern planes like the Boeing 787 rely heavily on digital technology, making them potentially vulnerable to sophisticated cyber threats.a. How Aircraft Can Be HackedToday's commercial aircraft are essentially flying computers with complex software controlling everything from engines to navigation. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner uses advanced computer systems to manage flight operations, which creates potential entry points for cybercriminals or hostile actors to interfere with the plane's normal functioning.b.Types of Digital Interference Being InvestigatedMalicious Software (Malware): Investigators are checking whether harmful computer programs were secretly installed on the aircraft's systems. This malware could have been designed to disrupt engine operations or other critical functions at a specific time, such as during takeoff.Software Tampering: Experts are examining whether the aircraft's original software was altered or corrupted in ways that could cause system failures. Even small changes to flight control software could have catastrophic consequences.Systems Under Digital Investigation: Cybersecurity experts are conducting detailed digital forensic examinations of several key aircraft systems:Engine Control Units: These are the computers that manage engine performance, fuel flow, and power output. If compromised, they could cause engines to malfunction or shut down unexpectedly.Flight Management Systems: These computer systems handle navigation, flight planning, and autopilot functions. Any interference could affect the aircraft's ability to maintain stable flight.Ground Maintenance Computers: Investigators are also checking computer terminals used for aircraft maintenance and pre-flight checks, as these systems could be entry points for introducing malicious code into the aircraft's systems.Command Spoofing: This involves sending false instructions to aircraft systems, essentially tricking the plane's computers into thinking they're receiving legitimate commands when they're actually being manipulated by an outside source. This type of investigation represents a new frontier in aviation security, as planes become increasingly computerised and potentially vulnerable to the same types of cyber attacks that target other digital infrastructure.
4. Airport Security Breaches Under Investigation
Security officials are examining whether unauthorised individuals gained access to restricted airport areas or if trusted airport personnel may have been compromised. This investigation focuses on determining if someone without proper clearance reached the aircraft or if legitimate staff members acted inappropriately.a.What Investigators Are CheckingUnauthorised Entry: Authorities are investigating whether people without proper security clearance somehow entered secure zones of the airport where they could access the aircraft. Airports have multiple security layers, and investigators want to ensure no one bypassed these protections.Compromised Staff: Officials are also looking into whether airport employees, airline staff, or security personnel may have been bribed, threatened, or otherwise influenced to help carry out sabotage. This could include anyone from baggage handlers to maintenance crews to security guards.b.Digital Evidence Being ReviewedAccess Control Records: Investigators are examining electronic logs that track who used keycards, badges, or other access devices to enter restricted areas. These digital records show exactly when and where each person entered secure zones.Fingerprint and Biometric Data: Modern airports use fingerprint scanners, facial recognition, and other biometric systems to verify identity. Officials are reviewing all this biological identification data to confirm that only authorized personnel accessed sensitive areas.Security Camera Footage: Teams are carefully studying hours of CCTV recordings from cameras throughout the airport, paying special attention to footage from the hours and days before the flight. This includes cameras monitoring aircraft parking areas, maintenance zones, fuel operations, and other critical locations.Pre-Flight Period Focus: Investigators are particularly interested in activities during the time leading up to departure, when the aircraft was being prepared, fueled, loaded with baggage, and undergo final safety checks. Any suspicious activity during this vulnerable period could be significant. This comprehensive security review helps determine whether the tragic accident resulted from a failure in airport security measures or involved individuals who exploited their trusted positions to cause harm.
5. Investigating Specific Targets on Board
Intelligence officials are examining whether the aircraft was deliberately targeted because of specific passengers or the cargo it was carrying. This line of investigation explores whether someone wanted to harm particular individuals or destroy certain items being transported on the flight.a. Why This Aircraft May Have Been ChosenAccording to CNN News18 sources, investigators are considering whether the AI 171 flight was selected as a target for specific reasons rather than being a random attack on aviation. The aircraft could have been chosen because it carried something or someone that made it a valuable target for those with malicious intent.b. Passenger Background InvestigationsSecurity agencies are conducting thorough background checks on all passengers aboard the flight, looking for individuals who might have been specifically targeted:Political Figures: Investigators are checking if any passengers were politicians, government officials, or individuals involved in sensitive political activities who might have had enemies.Intelligence Connections: Officials are examining whether any passengers had connections to intelligence agencies, either as operatives or sources, making them potential targets for foreign adversaries.Legal Sensitivities: The probe includes reviewing if any passengers were involved in high-profile legal cases, such as witnesses in important trials, whistleblowers, or individuals facing legal proceedings who might have been targeted.
6. Cargo Manifest Review
Beyond passengers, investigators are also examining the aircraft's cargo manifest - the official list of all items being transported in the plane's cargo hold. This review aims to determine if valuable, sensitive, or strategically important cargo was being shipped that could have made the flight a target.a. Strategic and Symbolic SignificanceIntelligence sources suggest the investigation is considering whether destroying this particular flight served a broader strategic purpose or a symbolic goal. For example, the crash could have been intended to send a political message, disrupt specific operations, or eliminate multiple targets simultaneously. This comprehensive approach helps investigators understand whether the tragedy was a random act of terrorism or a carefully planned operation targeting specific individuals or cargo on board the aircraft.
6. Foreign Involvement and Electronic Interference
a.International Threats Under InvestigationSecurity agencies are examining whether foreign countries or international terrorist groups may have been involved in the crash. Officials are treating this as a potential act of retaliation or a demonstration of hostile capabilities against India.b.Foreign Government Involvement:Investigators are checking if enemy nations or countries with strained relations with India orchestrated the attack as part of broader geopolitical conflicts.Non-State Actors: Officials are also looking into whether international terrorist organisations or criminal groups with no official government backing carried out the sabotage to make a statement or seek revenge for previous actions.
7. Air Traffic Control System Attacks
Another major area of investigation involves potential interference with the airport's air traffic control and navigation systems. Modern aircraft rely heavily on electronic signals and communications that can be disrupted by sophisticated attackers.GPS Signal Manipulation: Investigators are checking whether someone used technology to send false GPS signals to the aircraft, potentially causing it to receive incorrect location information that could lead to navigation errors.Communication Jamming: Officials are examining if radio signals between the aircraft and air traffic control were blocked or disrupted, preventing pilots from receiving crucial instructions or emergency guidance.False Control Tower Instructions: The probe includes checking whether attackers impersonated air traffic controllers and sent dangerous or misleading commands to the pilots, potentially causing them to make fatal decisions. This multi-faceted investigation underscores the authorities' unwavering commitment to leaving no stone unturned in determining the true cause of the AI 171 tragedy. By meticulously examining every possibility, from intricate technical failures to sophisticated sabotage, India aims not only to provide closure for the victims' families but also to fortify its aviation security protocols against any future threats, ensuring the highest standards of safety in the skies.

DRDO’s photonic radar: India’s light weapon shakes China and Pakistan

As of June 22, 2025, the conflict between Iran and Israel has intensified dramatically. Israel, under Operation Rising Lion, launched a wave of airstrikes beginning June 13, targeting Iran's nuclear facilities and military infrastructure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the action as a preemptive move to stop Iran from reaching nuclear weapon capability. The United States has now joined the conflict. On June 22, President Donald Trump confirmed successful American strikes on three of Iran’s key nuclear sites—Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan—further escalating tensions. In response, Iran fired ballistic missiles into Israel, causing casualties and sparking fears of a wider regional war.The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities but reported no abnormal radiation leaks. While Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful, the U.S. and Israel argue that Tehran’s uranium enrichment—especially at the underground Fordow site—points to a secret weapons programme.
The Challenge of Making a Nuclear Bomb
At first glance, building a nuclear bomb might seem straightforward: gather enough radioactive material, and a chain reaction can trigger an explosion. But in reality, the hardest and most complex step is acquiring and refining the right material—either enriched uranium or plutonium.Uranium is a naturally occurring element found in rocks. However, only one form—uranium-235 (U-235)—can be used for a nuclear explosion. This isotope makes up less than 1% of natural uranium and must be extracted through an elaborate process known as enrichment. But for a nuclear weapon, enrichment must go beyond 90%. The more enriched the uranium, the less is needed to build a bomb. For example:

Uranium enriched to 15% requires over 600 kg for a bomb.

At 20%, around 400 kg is needed.

At 90% or more (weapons-grade), only about 25 kg is enough.

That’s why uranium enrichment is closely monitored by global nuclear watchdogs—it’s a critical step toward weaponisation.
How Iran Enriches Uranium
Iran uses a method called centrifugation to enrich uranium. Natural uranium is converted into a gas, uranium hexafluoride, and spun at high speeds in centrifuges. This process separates the lighter U-235 from the heavier U-238. After multiple cycles, the uranium becomes more enriched and suitable either for energy production or, if taken further, for use in weapons.Iran already possesses uranium enriched to 60%, which is alarmingly close to weapons-grade. This enrichment level reduces the time needed to reach the 90% mark, raising international concerns.
Plutonium: Another Path to a Bomb
While uranium gets most of the attention, plutonium is another option for building nuclear weapons. It doesn’t exist in large amounts in nature but is produced inside nuclear reactors when uranium fuel is used. With reprocessing, about 10 kg of plutonium—enough for one bomb—can be extracted each year from a typical power plant.Experts often consider plutonium more dangerous than uranium because it allows for smaller, lighter warheads that are easier to fit onto missiles. However, reprocessing plutonium is highly technical, expensive, and easier to detect.
Can a Nuclear Bomb Explode by Accident?
A nuclear explosion requires the material to reach “critical mass”—a certain amount of fissile material packed together to sustain a chain reaction. To prevent accidental detonation, nuclear weapons are designed so the fissile material remains in separate parts until deliberately triggered. If these sub-critical pieces are somehow brought together—due to an accident or malfunction—they could start an uncontrolled chain reaction. This risk is why nuclear bombs are built with complex safety systems to prevent unintended explosions.
What Lies Ahead?
The recent strikes by Israel and the U.S. have reignited global concern over nuclear weapons. Iran insists it is not pursuing a bomb, but its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium—and its advanced centrifuge technology—suggest it is well within reach of weapons-grade capability. Some experts fear that the attacks may push Iran further toward building a nuclear deterrent, believing that only such a capability can prevent future strikes. With diplomatic channels narrowing and military escalation continuing, the international community faces the challenge of preventing a full-scale nuclear crisis.

At first glance, building a nuclear bomb might seem straightforward: gather enough radioactive material, and a chain reaction can trigger an explosion. But in reality, the hardest and most complex step is acquiring and refining the right material—either enriched uranium or plutonium.

In response, Iran fired ballistic missiles into Israel, causing casualties and sparking fears of a wider regional war. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed damage to Iran’s nuclear facilities but reported no abnormal radiation leaks. While Iran insists its nuclear programme is peaceful, the U.S. and Israel argue that Tehran’s uranium enrichment—especially at the underground Fordow site—points to a secret weapons programme. The Challenge of Making a Nuclear Bomb At first glance, building a nuclear bomb might seem straightforward: gather enough radioactive material, and a chain reaction can trigger an explosion. But in reality, the hardest and most complex step is acquiring and refining the right material—either enriched uranium or plutonium. Uranium is a naturally occurring element found in rocks. However, only one form—uranium-235 (U-235)—can be used for a nuclear explosion. This isotope makes up less than 1% of natural uranium and must be extracted through an elaborate process known as enrichment. The more U-235 is concentrated, the more powerful and compact the weapon becomes. What it takes to make a nuclear bomb—and why Israel is trying to stop Iran

Iran has repeatedly warned that it might block Strait of Hormuz, a narrow sea route, in response to pressure from Western countries, although it has never actually done so.On June 13, Israel carried out attacks on Iran, claiming it hit nuclear sites, missile production centres, and top military officials. This marked the beginning of a long-term mission aimed at stopping Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.Iran has always denied that it wants to build a nuclear weapon. However, in the past, it has warned that it might shut down the Strait of Hormuz in response to pressure from Western countries. Experts say that if this important waterway is blocked, it could disrupt global trade and cause oil prices around the world to rise sharply. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway located between Oman and Iran. It connects the Persian Gulf in the north to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea in the south. At its narrowest point, the strait is about 21 miles (33 kilometres) wide. However, ships can only pass through a lane that is just 2 miles (3 kilometres) wide in each direction, making it a very tight and important passage for global shipping.
Why is the Strait of Hormuz important?
Nearly 20 per cent of the world’s oil passes through this narrow waterway. From early 2022 up to last month, around 17.8 to 20.8 million barrels of crude oil, gas condensate, and other fuels were transported through the strait every single day, according to data shared by Vortexa and reported by Hindu Business Line. This makes the Strait one of the most important routes for global energy supply.Major oil-producing countries like Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, and Iraq—most of them members of OPEC—send most of their crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz, mainly to countries in Asia. However, both the UAE and Saudi Arabia have been trying to create alternative routes to avoid depending only on this narrow passage.According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, as of June last year, about 2.6 million barrels per day of extra capacity from pipelines in the UAE and Saudi Arabia could be used to move oil without going through the Strait of Hormuz.Qatar, one of the world’s top exporters of liquefied natural gas (LNG), sends nearly all of its LNG shipments through this narrow strait.Although Iran has often warned that it might block the strait in response to foreign pressure, it has never actually done so.To keep the area safe for international trade, the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, is responsible for protecting commercial ships passing through the region.
How Distant Wars Drain Your Wallet
Many times, we feel that global conflicts are too far away to affect us. But the truth is, events happening thousands of miles away can impact our daily lives—like the price we pay for fuel or groceries. The current tension between Israel and Iran is a clear example of this. The biggest concern for most people? Rising crude oil prices. In just five days, Brent crude prices jumped by 7 per cent, crossing $70 per barrel. For India—which buys 89 per cent of its oil from other countries—even a small price rise can have a big impact on the entire economy. In the financial year 2024–25, India spent $137 billion on oil imports, making up about 15 per cent of the country’s total import expenses. So, when global oil prices go up, it affects almost everything—from petrol and diesel to food prices and transportation costs. It’s like an extra hidden burden on both ordinary people and businesses.
What a $10 Increase in Oil Prices Really Means
When crude oil prices go up by $10, it usually affects the economy in two major ways. The country’s overall growth (GDP) may slow down by about 0.3 to 0.4 per cent, and inflation (CPI) may rise by around 0.4 per cent. But these changes aren’t just numbers in reports—they impact everyday life. Families, businesses, and the economy as a whole start feeling the pinch in many different ways. Here's a simple example to explain how a $10 increase in crude oil prices can affect everyday life:
Oil Price Ripple Effect
Let’s say crude oil goes up by $10 per barrel.

Fuel prices rise: Petrol and diesel become costlier. If you were paying ₹100 per litre, you might now pay ₹105 or more. This directly affects people who drive or use public transport.

Transportation costs increase: Trucks and delivery vehicles use more expensive fuel, so transporting goods like vegetables, fruits, and groceries costs more. That means prices at your local market or supermarket also go up.

Higher production costs: Factories that use oil or gas to run machines or generate power also face higher bills. To make up for that, they raise the prices of products like packaged foods, paints, tyres, or even plastic items.

Air travel becomes expensive: Airlines spend more on aviation fuel, so ticket prices go up. A budget flight from Bengaluru to Delhi that used to cost ₹4,000 might now cost ₹4,500 or more.

Household budget is hit: As everything from cooking gas to daily groceries gets costlier, families have to cut back on spending or save less. This affects the overall economy because when people spend less, businesses earn less too.

So, a $10 oil hike may seem small, but it touches almost every corner of life—like a chain reaction.
Inflation’s Hidden Daily Cost
An example of how a 0.4% increase in CPI (Consumer Price Index) affects you:The CPI measures the average change in the prices of goods and services people use every day—like food, fuel, clothes, transport, and rent. So, when CPI goes up by 0.4%, it means that the overall cost of living has increased by that much.Let’s say your monthly household expenses are ₹50,000. A 0.4 per cent rise in CPI means your costs will go up by:₹50,000 × 0.004 = ₹200 So now, you’ll be spending ₹50,200 per month for the same things. It might not seem like a big jump at first—but over a year, that’s ₹2,400 extra, just due to inflation caused by rising oil prices. And this is just a basic estimate—if oil prices stay high or keep increasing, the impact could be even more.In short, a 0.4 per cent CPI rise is like a slow, silent drain on your wallet.
Industries Likely to Face Rising Costs

Airlines: Fuel is one of the biggest expenses for airlines. When oil prices go up, jet fuel becomes costlier. This reduces their profits. Airlines may either bear the extra cost or increase ticket prices, which could make people travel less. For instance, InterGlobe Aviation (which operates Indigo) spent around 31.1 per cent of its earnings on fuel in the financial year 2025.

Logistics and FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Goods): Transporting goods becomes more expensive when fuel prices rise. Delivery companies have to pay more for diesel, and brands that sell daily-use items or online products also face higher transport costs. This either cuts into their profit or forces them to increase prices, which can reduce customer demand.

Paint Companies: Paint manufacturers rely on raw materials like binders, solvents, and additives—all of which are derived from crude oil. When oil prices go up, the cost of these materials also increases, making it more expensive to produce paint.

Auto Companies: The auto industry is closely tied to oil. When fuel prices rise, it becomes costlier to run petrol or diesel vehicles. As a result, people may postpone buying new cars or choose smaller, fuel-efficient ones. This can lead to a drop in sales and tighter profit margins. To stay competitive, automakers may reduce prices, offer attractive loans, or cut production costs. Simply put, higher oil prices reduce demand and push companies to adapt.

Fertiliser Companies: Fertilisers like urea and DAP (diammonium phosphate) use ammonia as a key ingredient, and ammonia is made using natural gas. So, when oil and gas prices rise, the cost of making fertilisers also goes up. This affects fertiliser companies because their production becomes more expensive. Sometimes, they have to increase prices, which can hurt demand. Other times, they absorb the costs, which reduces their profits. In either case, rising fuel prices create a big challenge for the fertiliser industry.

Sectors That Could Do Well

Oil Refiners: When crude oil prices fluctuate sharply, the difference between the cost of buying crude oil and the price at which companies sell refined products like petrol, diesel, and jet fuel becomes important. This difference is called the crack spread. For example, if a refiner buys crude oil at ₹5,000 per barrel and sells the refined fuels for ₹6,500, the ₹1,500 difference is their profit margin. When this margin widens due to market conditions, oil refiners make more profit, even if crude prices are high.

Defence Companies: During times of global tension or war threats, governments tend to spend more on military preparedness. This results in increased orders for defence companies, boosting their revenue. Investors also consider these companies more stable during uncertain times, making their stocks more attractive.

Gold & Bonds: When risk levels go up globally—like during wars or economic crises—investors often pull their money out of stocks and move it into safer assets like gold and bonds. This shift increases demand and prices for gold and bonds, helping existing investors earn better returns.

As an Investor, What Should You Watch?
Here’s what you need to keep an eye on if you want to understand how rising oil prices could affect the Indian economy and markets:

Brent Crude Above $80: When Brent crude oil trades above $80 per barrel, India’s oil import bill rises sharply. This pushes up inflation because fuel and transportation become costlier. As a result, foreign investors (FIIs) may start pulling money out of Indian markets, fearing lower profits. That can lead to a stock market correction. Example: If oil hits $90, petrol prices may rise by ₹4–₹5 per litre, impacting consumer spending and investor sentiment.

Rupee vs Dollar (USD/INR) Movement: India buys crude oil using US dollars. So, if the rupee weakens against the dollar, it makes oil even more expensive for India, worsening inflation. Investors should monitor how the rupee is trading compared to the dollar. Example: If ₹82 was worth 1 USD earlier and weakens to 85, the same oil shipment costs more rupees now—this pushes up overall fuel costs.

RBI’s Policy Signals: When inflation goes up due to expensive oil, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may avoid cutting interest rates—or may even raise them.

Why does RBI keep rates high?
High interest rates help control inflation. By making loans and EMIs expensive, the RBI reduces demand for borrowing and spending. This helps cool off rising prices across the economy. But the flip side is that businesses borrow less, and consumers spend cautiously. That can slow down economic growth. Example: If inflation stays above 6 per cent, RBI may delay rate cuts for months, meaning your home loan EMIs won’t come down anytime soon.

How a $10 oil shock hits your wallet: What Indian investors must track now

On Wednesday, Iran claimed it had launched hypersonic missiles at Israel as part of a fresh round of overnight attacks. The country’s top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, urged Iranians to show “no mercy” toward Israel. Iran’s powerful military wing, the Revolutionary Guard Corps, said this was the 11th round of attacks under what they call “Operation Honest Promise 3.” They stated that the strike involved Fattah-1 hypersonic missiles and boldly claimed that Iranian forces now have full control of the airspace over Israeli-occupied areas. Also read: Israel-Iran war: How much time does it take for Iran's ballistic missiles to reach Israel? Less than what you thinkThis isn’t the first time Iran has fired hypersonic missiles at Israel. Back on October 1, 2024, during its Operation True Promise II, Iran had launched several Fattah-1 missiles targeting Jerusalem. However, this appears to be the first time these missiles have been used in the current round of fighting between the two countries.
What Is a Hypersonic Missile?
A hypersonic missile is a very advanced type of weapon that can travel at extremely high speeds, more than five times the speed of sound, while flying within the Earth's atmosphere. There are two main types: hypersonic glide vehicles and hypersonic cruise missiles. What makes them especially dangerous is their ability to change direction during flight, making it very difficult for air defence systems to detect or stop them in time.Hypersonic missiles fly at speeds of Mach 5 or more, which means they travel at least five times faster than the speed of sound, around 3,800 miles (6,100 kilometers) per hour. However, as reported by CNN, many regular ballistic missiles also reach hypersonic speeds, especially when they are falling toward their targets. The key difference is that hypersonic missiles can maneuver while flying at these extreme speeds, making them harder to track or shoot down.
How are hypersonic weapons different from ballistic missiles?
Ballistic missiles can also reach hypersonic speeds, that is, five times the speed of sound or more. However, they follow a fixed, arch-like path after being launched and can't change direction easily. In contrast, hypersonic weapons are specially designed to move at extremely high speeds and can change direction mid-flight, making them much harder to track and stop.
Israel’s Missile Defence and the Iron Dome – Explained
Israel is known for having one of the world’s most advanced and proven air defence systems. Many people refer to the entire system as the “Iron Dome,” but that’s only one part of it.In reality, Israel’s air defence has multiple layers. Each layer is designed to stop threats coming from different distances, some from nearby, some from far away. The Iron Dome is just the first layer. It is specially built to stop short-range rockets, mortars, and artillery shells, the kind that might be fired from close by.Here’s how it works:

Radar units detect rockets the moment they are launched.

Then, command and control centres quickly figure out which rockets are dangerous and need to be stopped.

Finally, interceptor missiles are launched to blow up the incoming threats in the air—before they can reach people or buildings.

In simple terms, Iron Dome is like a protective shield that guards cities from small rockets and shells fired from a short distance.

Israel’s Ballistic Missile DefenceBesides the Iron Dome, Israel also uses other advanced defence systems to protect itself from long-range ballistic missiles—these are missiles that travel very fast and cover large distances. These systems include:

David’s Sling

Arrow 2

Arrow 3

Each of these is designed to destroy missiles coming from far away, depending on how high and fast they travel.David’s Sling deals with medium- to long-range threats.Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 target ballistic missiles at very high altitudes. There are two main areas where these missiles can be intercepted:Within the atmosphere – This means the missile is destroyed below 100 km from sea level, inside the Earth’s sky.Outside the atmosphere (exoatmospheric) – This means the missile is intercepted above 100 km, in outer space, before it re-enters Earth's atmosphere. Some recent videos from ongoing conflicts have shown missiles being blown up in space, proving how advanced and powerful Israel’s defence technology is.
The US Has Similar Missile Defence Systems
The United States also has powerful missile defence systems that are similar to Israel’s multi-layered setup. The US Army uses the Patriot PAC-3 system, which works like Israel’s David’s Sling to stop medium-range threats. It also uses THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense), which is similar to Israel’s Arrow 2, designed to shoot down missiles at high altitudes. The US Navy uses a system called Aegis, which is installed on special warships. These ships carry missiles like:SM-3, which is similar to Israel’s Arrow 3 and can shoot down missiles in space (outside Earth’s atmosphere).SM-6, which works more like Arrow 2, hitting targets within the atmosphere. In 2024, the US had already sent warships equipped with Aegis systems to help protect Israel from missile attacks. And now, it seems the US is once again moving similar ships and resources to the Middle East to support Israel if needed.
Can Missile Defences Work Forever?
Missile defence systems don’t last forever, they have limits.Every country only has a certain number of interceptor missiles available to shoot down incoming threats. These interceptors can run out if too many missiles are launched at once. The country launching the attack also has a limited number of missiles. But attackers have an advantage: defenders often need to use more than one interceptor per missile to make sure the threat is destroyed, just in case the first one misses.Attackers also expect that some of their missiles may get destroyed or fail to work. So, they often launch a large number of missiles at the same time to overwhelm the defence system. Their goal is to make sure at least a few missiles get through and hit their targets. In short, missile defences are powerful but not endless. If enough missiles are launched at once, even the best defence system can be pushed to its limit. When it comes to ballistic missiles, the attacker usually has the upper hand. These missiles can carry very powerful explosives, and sometimes even nuclear warheads. So even if just a few missiles manage to get past the defence system, they can still cause massive destruction. That’s why, in these situations, stopping every single missile is so important, because even one or two getting through can lead to serious damage or loss of life.
About the Fattah-1 Hypersonic Missile – Explained Simply
The Fattah-1 is Iran’s first hypersonic missile, officially revealed in 2023, and was named by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This missile is designed to defeat even the most advanced defence systems like Israel’s Iron Dome and Arrow missiles. Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has even called it the “Israel-striker” because of its intended purpose.
Here are some key features of the Fattah-1:

It is about 12 metres long.

It can strike targets up to 1,400 kilometres away, making it a medium-range missile.

It uses solid fuel and is powered by a single-stage engine.

It can carry a 200 kg explosive warhead, based on a report from Iran Watch.

What makes Fattah-1 different is its hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) warhead. This allows the missile to fly at extremely high speeds, up to 17,900 km per hour, and still change direction mid-flight. This quick manoeuvring makes it very difficult for enemy defences to detect and shoot it down.According to CNN, missile expert Fabian Hinz from the International Institute for Strategic Studies said the warhead is placed on a “manoeuvrable reentry vehicle.” That means when the missile is falling back toward Earth, it can slightly shift its path, making it harder for interceptors to catch.

A hypersonic missile is a very advanced type of weapon that can travel at extremely high speeds, more than five times the speed of sound, while flying within the Earth's atmosphere.

Less than what you think This isn’t the first time Iran has fired hypersonic missiles at Israel. What makes them especially dangerous is their ability to change direction during flight, making it very difficult for air defence systems to detect or stop them in time. Hypersonic missiles fly at speeds of Mach 5 or more, which means they travel at least five times faster than the speed of sound, around 3,800 miles (6,100 kilometers) per hour. Israel’s Missile Defence and the Iron Dome – Explained Israel is known for having one of the world’s most advanced and proven air defence systems. Many people refer to the entire system as the “Iron Dome,” but that’s only one part of it. In reality, Israel’s air defence has multiple layers. Each layer is designed to stop threats coming from different distances, some from nearby, some from far away. The Iron Dome is just the first layer. Here’s how it works: Radar units detect rockets the moment they are launched. Israel’s Ballistic Missile Defence Besides the Iron Dome, Israel also uses other advanced defence systems to protect itself from long-range ballistic missiles—these are missiles that travel very fast and cover large distances. These systems include: David’s Sling Arrow 2 Arrow 3 Each of these is designed to destroy missiles coming from far away, depending on how high and fast they travel. David’s Sling deals with medium- to long-range threats. Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 target ballistic missiles at very high altitudes. There are two main areas where these missiles can be intercepted: Within the atmosphere – This means the missile is destroyed below 100 km from sea level, inside the Earth’s sky. From Fattah-1 to Iron Dome: Unpacking the high-stakes missile confrontation between Iran and Israel

The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is truly one of the most remarkable aircraft ever built. This massive bomber has been serving the United States Air Force since 1961 and continues to be one of their most important weapons even today. What makes this aircraft so special that it has remained in service for more than six decades?
A Giant in the Sky
The B-52 is an enormous aircraft that commands respect wherever it flies. With a wingspan of 185 feet, this bomber is so wide that it cannot take off or land normally on runways when there are crosswinds. Boeing engineers had to design special landing gear that could turn and align with the runway, allowing the aircraft to land safely even in challenging conditions. The aircraft stretches 159 feet in length and stands 40 feet tall – roughly the height of a four-story building. When empty, it weighs about 83,250 kg, but when fully loaded for a mission, it can weigh up to 219,600 kg. To put this in perspective, that's heavier than 150 cars combined!
Eight Engines of Power
What keeps this massive aircraft in the air? Eight powerful Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines, each capable of producing up to 17,000 pounds of thrust. These engines allow the B-52 to cruise at speeds of up to 650 mph and reach altitudes of 50,000 feet, high enough to fly above most commercial aircraft. The bomber can carry an incredible 141,670 litres of fuel, which gives it an impressive range of 8,800 miles. This means a B-52 can fly from New Delhi to London and back without refuelling, making it perfect for long-range missions anywhere in the world.
A Weapons Platform Like No Other
The B-52's most impressive feature is its ability to carry up to 31,500 kg of weapons – that's equivalent to the weight of about 20 cars! The aircraft can carry everything from traditional bombs to smart weapons, missiles, and mines. Recent upgrades have made it even more versatile by allowing it to carry GPS-guided "smart" weapons in its internal weapons bay for the first time. The bomber's internal weapons bay has been upgraded with special rotary launchers that can carry and launch eight Joint Direct Attack Munitions at once. These launchers can be moved from one aircraft to another, giving the Air Force flexibility in its operations. Future upgrades will add the ability to carry even more advanced missiles and decoy systems.
Built to Last Generations
Perhaps the most amazing fact about the B-52 is its incredible longevity. Boeing built 744 of these aircraft, with the last one delivered in October 1962 – over 60 years ago! Today, only the H model remains in service, but engineering studies suggest these aircraft could continue flying beyond 2040. This means some B-52s might serve for nearly 80 years – longer than most people live!
Adapting to Modern Warfare
Originally designed during the Cold War as a high-altitude nuclear bomber, the B-52 has continuously evolved to meet changing military needs. The aircraft originally had a gunner positioned in the tail with defensive machine guns, but after the Gulf War in the early 1990s, these defensive systems were removed as they were no longer needed. Today's B-52 is operated by a crew of five: an aircraft commander, pilot, radar navigator, navigator, and electronic warfare officer. Each crew member plays a crucial role in ensuring the aircraft can complete its missions safely and effectively.
A Strategic Asset
The B-52 remains a critical part of America's defense strategy because of its unique combination of capabilities. Its high mission-ready rate means it's almost always available when needed. Its large payload capacity allows it to carry massive amounts of weapons. Its long range means it can strike targets anywhere in the world. Its ability to stay in the air for extended periods makes it perfect for long missions. The aircraft serves with the Air Force Global Strike Command and continues to be one of the most combat-capable bombers in the US military inventory. Whether carrying nuclear weapons for deterrence or conventional weapons for precision strikes, the B-52 provides America with immediate global strike capability.
B-52 in Current Conflicts: The Iran-Israel War of 2025
The B-52 has once again found itself at the center of global military discussions during the ongoing Iran-Israel War that began on June 13, 2025, when Israel launched "Operation Rising Lion" against Iranian nuclear and military facilities. As the conflict enters its fifth day with both sides exchanging deadly missile attacks, President Donald Trump has issued warnings to Iran and is reportedly considering whether to provide direct military support to Israel. One key challenge in this conflict is Iran's Fordow nuclear enrichment facility, which is buried 60 to 90 meters underground in a mountain, making it extremely difficult for conventional Israeli weapons to destroy completely. While the B-52 has been tested with bunker-buster capabilities, only the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber is currently configured to carry the GBU-57/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) – the 13,600 kg "bunker-buster" bomb that could potentially neutralise Fordow.
High-Powered Warhead Composition and Payload
This advanced warhead carries a powerful explosive payload totalling 2,423 kilograms. It includes 2,082 kg of AFX-757, a modern military explosive known for its high energy and thermal stability. AFX stands for "Advanced Fire-resistant Explosive," designed to withstand extreme conditions without accidental detonation. Alongside it is 341 kg of PBXN-114, a type of plastic-bonded explosive (PBX) that combines high performance with improved safety. PBXNs are explosives mixed with polymers to reduce sensitivity to shock and heat. Together, these compounds make the warhead highly effective and stable under combat conditions. The GBU-57/B MOP represents the most powerful non-nuclear bunker-penetrating weapon in the world. This precision-guided bomb weighs approximately 13,600 kg (30,000 pounds), measures 6.2 meters in length with a diameter of 80 cm, and contains about 2,400 kg of explosive warhead. The weapon can penetrate up to 61 meters (200 feet) of reinforced concrete or soil before detonating, and multiple bombs can be dropped successively to drill even deeper with each blast. It uses GPS and inertial navigation systems for precision targeting and features a sophisticated "smart fuze" that can adjust detonation timing based on the target's depth and configuration. The bomb works by using its massive weight and speed gained from high-altitude drops to penetrate through layers of rock and concrete, with advanced fuzing systems that detect when it has reached the optimal depth before exploding. However, while the B-52 has been used in testing of the MOP, currently only the B-2 Spirit is operationally configured to deliver this weapon in combat.
The Flying Legend Lives On
The strategic implications are significant – any use of American bunker-buster bombs would require U.S. aircraft and could jeopardise Trump’s stated desire for diplomatic talks with Iran about its nuclear program. Military experts note that destroying facilities like Fordow represents a unique American capability, as Israel lacks the heavy bunker-busting munitions needed for such deeply buried targets. This situation highlights how the B-52, while incredibly versatile, operates alongside other specialised aircraft like the B-2 Spirit in America’s strategic bombing capability, each platform optimised for specific mission requirements in an increasingly complex global security environment. The B-52 Stratofortress stands as a testament to exceptional engineering and design. Few aircraft have served as long or as effectively as this flying giant. As military technology continues to advance, the B-52 adapts and evolves, proving that sometimes the best designs are truly timeless. For military aviation enthusiasts and general readers alike, the B-52 represents the incredible achievement of human engineering – a machine that has quite literally stood the test of time and continues to soar through the skies as America's trusted guardian.

B-52 Bomber: America's strategic ace in the Iran-Israel nuclear standoff

The recent attacks on Iran’s oil facilities—a direct fallout of the growing conflict between Israel and Iran—have sparked major concerns across global energy markets. While experts are still assessing the full extent of the damage to Iran’s oil production sites, the effects are already being felt. There’s increasing fear that the tension could disrupt oil supply, push up fuel prices, and lead to higher inflation—not just in wealthy nations but also in developing economies.
Global ripple effects
Iran holds nearly 9% of the world’s proven oil reserves and exports around 1.5 to 2 million barrels of oil daily, mostly to China. Even though Iran’s oil trade isn’t as closely tied to global markets as Saudi Arabia or the UAE, any disruption—especially at the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20% of the world’s oil—can shake up the entire global energy system. Right after the attacks, Brent crude oil prices jumped by over 6%, and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices rose by more than 5%. This wasn’t just a reaction to supply concerns—investors are now pricing in the risk of a larger regional conflict, which adds what’s known as a “geopolitical risk premium” to oil prices.
More price hikes ahead?
If the fighting continues, global oil prices could climb even higher. Experts also expect that countries like Australia could see rising fuel prices in the coming weeks, as local petrol rates usually follow international prices with a short delay.
A bigger strategy at play
There’s growing concern that Israel may continue targeting Iranian oil infrastructure to weaken Iran’s economy and stop its support for proxy groups. If these attacks continue, they could severely affect the worldwide supply of oil. Things could get worse if Iran hits back by blocking key shipping lanes or causing trouble in neighboring oil-producing countries—a move that would slow down global oil deliveries even more.
Asia at risk
Countries that rely heavily on imported oil—especially in Asia—are most vulnerable. India, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Bangladesh get much of their oil from the Middle East and have limited emergency reserves, making them especially sensitive to rising prices or supply issues. Even China, despite being Iran’s largest oil buyer, could feel the heat. Though it has diverse suppliers and big reserves, a prolonged crisis in the Persian Gulf could raise freight and insurance costs for Chinese oil imports—especially if the Strait of Hormuz becomes unsafe. This narrow waterway, linking the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is the only sea route for oil tankers leaving the Persian Gulf. If it becomes a war zone, oil shipments worldwide could be delayed or blocked.
Trouble for global trade
If the conflict spreads, Iran or its allies could attack ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, or Strait of Hormuz. This would raise shipping insurance costs, cause longer delivery times, and put more pressure on global supply chains. These issues could bring back inflation in many countries, making basic goods and services more expensive.
How this impacts India
India is especially exposed. Over 80% of its crude oil is imported, and much of it comes through the Strait of Hormuz. Any disruption there can immediately cause fuel prices to spike, hurt the trade balance, and push up inflation.
Rupee reacts to oil shock
Following the attack, on Friday, June 13, the rupee opened at 86.14 per US dollar, falling by 54 paise from the previous day’s close of 85.60. This drop happened because rising oil prices increased the demand for US dollars—which oil importers need to pay for shipments. As the rupee weakens, oil becomes even more expensive, creating a cycle of rising costs. This puts added strain on India’s current account deficit, meaning the country is spending more on imports than it earns from exports.
Experts warn of worse to come
As reported by the Economic Times, JP Morgan has warned that if the conflict worsens, oil could jump to $120 per barrel. While the chances of this happening are currently around 7%, the bank says the price surge could be sudden and severe, driven by panic and a possible spillover into neighboring regions.
LPG, gas, and fertilisers at risk
India’s energy imports are not limited to crude oil. The country also brings in LPG, natural gas, petrochemicals, and fertilisers. If tensions in the Middle East escalate, these supplies could also face disruptions and price hikes. This is especially worrying for rural India. A shortage of LPG or a rise in fertiliser costs could hit households and farmers hard. Since fertilisers are vital for agriculture, any price rise would increase food production costs, which could then raise food prices and undo recent gains in controlling inflation.
Indian industries to feel the pinch
Several key Indian industries—such as aviation, chemicals, paints, tyres, cement, and logistics—rely on petroleum-based fuels and raw materials. If the prices of essentials like jet fuel, diesel, or naphtha go up sharply, companies will face higher production costs and see a drop in profits.
In short
What’s happening between Israel and Iran isn’t just a political crisis—it’s an economic shock that could touch every part of the Indian economy, from the fuel pump to the farmland, and from global trade routes to the local grocery store.

Global ripple effects Iran holds nearly 9% of the world’s proven oil reserves and exports around 1.5 to 2 million barrels of oil daily, mostly to China. A bigger strategy at play There’s growing concern that Israel may continue targeting Iranian oil infrastructure to weaken Iran’s economy and stop its support for proxy groups. If these attacks continue, they could severely affect the worldwide supply of oil. Things could get worse if Iran hits back by blocking key shipping lanes or causing trouble in neighboring oil-producing countries—a move that would slow down global oil deliveries even more. Asia at risk Countries that rely heavily on imported oil—especially in Asia—are most vulnerable. Trouble for global trade If the conflict spreads, Iran or its allies could attack ships in the Red Sea, Arabian Sea, or Strait of Hormuz. This would raise shipping insurance costs, cause longer delivery times, and put more pressure on global supply chains. These issues could bring back inflation in many countries, making basic goods and services more expensive. How this impacts India India is especially exposed. Over 80% of its crude oil is imported, and much of it comes through the Strait of Hormuz. Any disruption there can immediately cause fuel prices to spike, hurt the trade balance, and push up inflation. Rupee reacts to oil shock Following the attack, on Friday, June 13, the rupee opened at 86.14 per US dollar, falling by 54 paise from the previous day’s close of 85.60. Experts warn of worse to come As reported by the Economic Times, JP Morgan has warned that if the conflict worsens, oil could jump to $120 per barrel. While the chances of this happening are currently around 7%, the bank says the price surge could be sudden and severe, driven by panic and a possible spillover into neighboring regions. LPG, gas, and fertilisers at risk India’s energy imports are not limited to crude oil. Indian industries to feel the pinch Several key Indian industries—such as aviation, chemicals, paints, tyres, cement, and logistics—rely on petroleum-based fuels and raw materials. If the prices of essentials like jet fuel, diesel, or naphtha go up sharply, companies will face higher production costs and see a drop in profits. In short What’s happening between Israel and Iran isn’t just a political crisis—it’s an economic shock that could touch every part of the Indian economy, from the fuel pump to the farmland, and from global trade routes to the local grocery store.

There’s increasing fear that the tension could disrupt oil supply, push up fuel prices, and lead to higher inflation—not just in wealthy nations but also in developing economies.

The Axiom-4 mission represents a historic milestone for India's space programme, marking the first time an Indian astronaut would visit the International Space Station (ISS). Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, a decorated Indian Air Force pilot, was set to become India's second astronaut in space after Wing Commander Rakesh Sharma's pioneering journey in 1984. This mission is a collaborative effort between the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), NASA, and Axiom Space, showcasing India's growing partnership in international space exploration. The mission is particularly significant as it marks the return to human spaceflight for India, Poland, and Hungary after more than 40 years. The crew of four includes Commander Peggy Whitson (a veteran NASA astronaut), Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla from India, and mission specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski from Poland and Tibor Kapu from Hungary. During their planned two-week stay at the ISS, the crew was scheduled to conduct over 60 scientific experiments representing 31 countries, making it one of the most research-intensive missions to the space station.
Technical issue: Understanding what went wrong
The Axiom-4 mission, originally scheduled for launch on June 11, 2025, has been postponed due to a critical technical issue discovered during pre-launch testing. To understand why this postponement was necessary, let's break down the technical terms in simple language.
What is a static fire test?
Think of a static fire test as a "dress rehearsal" for the rocket's engines. Just like how a pilot tests an aircraft engine before takeoff, rocket engineers fire up the rocket's engines while it's still firmly bolted to the launch pad. The rocket doesn't move anywhere – it's held down by massive clamps and restraints. During this test, the rocket's engines roar to life for a few seconds, allowing engineers to check if everything is working properly. They monitor fuel flow, engine performance, temperatures, pressures, and hundreds of other parameters. It's like taking your car to a mechanic who revs the engine while it's parked to check if it's running smoothly.
What does ‘seven-second hot test’ mean?
A "seven second hot test" simply means the rocket engines were fired for exactly seven seconds during the static fire test. Why seven seconds? This duration is long enough to check all the engine systems and parameters, but short enough to conserve fuel and minimise wear on the equipment. Imagine lighting a gas stove burner for seven seconds – long enough to see if it ignites properly, burns steadily, and has the right flame colour, but not so long that you waste gas or overheat the stove. Similarly, seven seconds gives engineers enough data to verify that the rocket engines are performing as expected.
Understanding rocket anatomy: Booster stage and propulsion bay
To understand where the leak occurred, it's helpful to know how a rocket is structured. Think of the Falcon 9 rocket as a multi-story building: Booster stage (first stage): This is the bottom section of the rocket – like the ground floor of a building. It contains nine powerful Merlin engines and does the heavy lifting during launch. Just as the ground floor supports the entire building, the booster stage supports the entire rocket and provides the main thrust to lift off from Earth and climb through the atmosphere. After about 2-3 minutes of flight, when the rocket reaches a certain altitude, this stage separates and either lands back on Earth (for reuse) or falls into the ocean. Propulsion bay: Think of this as the "engine room" within the booster stage. Just like a ship has an engine room where all the machinery is housed, the propulsion bay contains all the equipment that feeds fuel and oxygen to the rocket engines. This includes pumps, valves, pipes, tanks, and control systems. It's like the kitchen of a restaurant – you don't see it from the dining area, but it's where all the important work happens to make everything function. The propulsion bay is located at the bottom of the booster stage, surrounding and supporting the nine Merlin engines. When engineers say they found a leak "in the propulsion bay," they mean somewhere in this engine room area – possibly in the pipes carrying liquid oxygen, the valves controlling flow, or the connections between different components.
What is LOX and why is it critical?
LOX stands for Liquid Oxygen – basically, the oxygen we breathe, but super-cooled to -183°C (-297°F) until it becomes a liquid. Why use liquid instead of gas? Imagine trying to carry enough air for a long journey – you'd need enormous tanks. But if you could compress all that air into liquid form, you'd need much smaller containers. That's exactly why rockets use liquid oxygen. In a rocket engine, fuel (like kerosene) cannot burn without oxygen – just like a candle cannot burn in a vacuum. Since space has no air, rockets must carry their own oxygen supply. LOX serves as this oxygen source, mixing with fuel to create the controlled explosions that propel the rocket forward. The leaked LOX is like having a gas leak in your kitchen – potentially dangerous and definitely something that needs immediate attention before you can safely cook (or in this case, launch).
How was the leak discovered, and why is it dangerous?
During the seven-second hot test, sensors and cameras monitor every aspect of the rocket's performance. Engineers detected that LOX was escaping from somewhere in the propulsion bay – possibly from a valve, pipe joint, or seal that wasn't holding properly. While this might sound minor, a LOX leak is extremely serious for several reasons: Fire and explosion risk: LOX makes everything around it highly flammable. Even materials that normally don't burn easily can ignite violently in the presence of concentrated oxygen. It's like having a super-charged environment where any spark could cause a massive fire.Extreme cold damage: At -183°C, escaping LOX can freeze and damage other components in the propulsion bay. Imagine pouring liquid nitrogen on electronic equipment – it can crack pipes, freeze valves shut, and make metal components brittle.Engine performance issues: If LOX is leaking out, it means the engines aren't getting the right amount of oxygen for proper combustion. This could cause engines to perform poorly, shut down unexpectedly, or even explode during flight.Crew safety: With four astronauts aboard, any system malfunction during launch could be catastrophic. The launch and initial ascent are the most dangerous parts of any space mission.
Why was this postponement was necessary?
Some people might wonder if such a delay is really necessary for what seems like a small leak. However, the space industry has learned from tragic accidents that seemingly minor problems can lead to disasters. The postponement demonstrates several important principles: Zero tolerance for known risks: In human spaceflight, there's a rule – if you know about a problem, you fix it before flying. No exceptions. This approach has made modern spaceflight much safer than it was in earlier decades.International standards: The collaboration between ISRO, SpaceX, Axiom Space, and NASA means that the highest international safety standards must be met. Each organization has its own rigorous requirements, and all must be satisfied.Learning from history: Space agencies remember accidents like the Challenger and Columbia disasters, where small problems led to tragic losses. Today's cautious approach prevents such tragedies. Technical excellence: India's participation in this mission showcases the country's commitment to world-class space operations. Being willing to delay shows ISRO's dedication to doing things right, not just fast. The Repair Process: What happens next Fixing the LOX leak involves several steps: Finding the Exact Problem: Engineers must locate exactly where the leak is occurring. This might involve detailed inspections, pressure tests, and examining every component in the propulsion bay. Making Repairs: Depending on the source, repairs might involve replacing faulty seals, tightening connections, or swapping out damaged components entirely. Testing the Fix: After repairs, engineers will run more tests to ensure the problem is solved and no new issues have been created. Final Validation: Multiple safety reviews and possibly another static fire test will verify that everything is working perfectly. Regulatory Approval: NASA and other authorities must approve all repairs before giving permission for launch. This process might take days or weeks, depending on the complexity of the problem. But this time investment is essential for mission success and crew safety. A Symbol of Responsible Space Exploration While disappointing for those eagerly awaiting this historic mission, the postponement actually demonstrates the maturity of India's space programme. ISRO's willingness to delay the mission shows that the organization prioritizes safety over schedule pressure – a hallmark of world-class space agencies. This careful approach ensures that when Group Captain Shukla finally makes his journey to space, it will be as safe as humanly possible. The delay also allows time for additional preparations and checks, potentially making the eventual mission even more successful. Looking ForwardThe Axiom-4 mission will eventually launch, carrying with it the hopes and dreams of millions of Indians. When it does, Group Captain Shukla will not only make history as the first Indian to visit the ISS but will also represent India's commitment to international cooperation and technical excellence in space exploration. The postponement serves as a reminder that space travel, despite decades of advancement, remains one of humanity's most challenging endeavors. Every successful mission is built on countless hours of careful preparation, testing, and unwavering attention to safety. This methodical approach is what makes it possible for humans to safely journey to the stars. In the words often used in the space industry: "Better to be on the ground wishing you were in space, than in space wishing you were on the ground."
