In the last 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has changed India completely. Our country has become a major world power while making life better for people at home. India has grown from the world's 10th biggest economy to the 4th biggest. We now export defence equipment to many countries, explore space like never before, and have built world-class roads, railways, schools and hospitals. When we compare where India was in 2014 to where we are in 2025, we can see how much our nation has grown. Indians today have more opportunities, feel proud of their country, and have hope for the future. Let's look at the big changes in different areas.
From 10th biggest economy to 4th biggest
In 2014, India was the 10th largest economy in the world. Our GDP (total value of everything we produce) was $2.1 trillion. By 2025, we became the 4th largest economy, beating Japan. Our GDP is now $4.19 trillion, according to the International Monetary Fund's report from April 2025. This means our economy has doubled in size. This growth happened because of smart policies like 'Make in India', which brought foreign companies to invest in our country. Between 2000 and 2024, we got over $1 trillion in foreign investment, and 69% of this came in the last 10 years. The Digital India programme made us world leaders in digital payments. Our UPI (Unified Payments Interface) now handles 83% of all digital transactions, and other countries are copying our system. The government also brought in GST (Goods and Services Tax) and new bankruptcy laws that made it easier to do business. The PM Gati Shakti plan reduced the cost of moving goods around the country, which helped our exports reach $778 billion in 2024. All this created more jobs - startups alone gave jobs to 17 lakh people. The average income of each Indian went up from $1,438 in 2013-14 to $2,880 in 2025. But we still have problems. The richest 1% of Indians own 40% of the country's wealth, and 234 million people are still poor. We need to make sure growth benefits everyone equally.
Defence: From small exporter to global supplier
In 2014, India's defence exports were very small - only Rs 4,312 crore from 2004 to 2014. By 2024-25, our defence exports jumped to Rs 23,622 crore ($2.76 billion). We are growing at 12.04% every year and now sell weapons to over 90 countries. Defence production in India has grown by 174% since 2014. This happened because of the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India) policy. The government allowed foreign companies to invest up to 74% in defence companies in 2020, which brought new technology to India. Our defence budget for 2025-26 is Rs 6.81 lakh crore ($78.7 billion), which helps our military get modern equipment. Private companies now handle 64.5% of our defence exports. We have signed big deals like the $3.5 billion drone agreement with the US, which makes our friendship with America stronger. For Indians, this means our military is stronger and there are more jobs in defence manufacturing. In the world, India is now ranked 4th in military power.
Space: From a promising beginning to historic moon landing
In 2014, India's space programme was doing well but was limited. We had sent the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan) in 2013, making India the first Asian country to reach Mars on the first try. From 1993 to 2014, ISRO launched 97 satellites. By 2025, India became a space superpower. In 2023, our Chandrayaan-3 mission landed on the Moon's South Pole, making India the first country to explore this area. We also sent Aditya-L1 to study the Sun. Soon, we will send Indian astronauts to space with the Gaganyaan mission. Between 2014 and 2023, ISRO launched 466 satellites (396 for foreign countries, 70 for India). This is much more than the 97 satellites we launched in the previous 20 years. In 2020, the government allowed private companies to work in space, and now we have over 250 space startups. For Indians, this brings pride and creates jobs in the growing space industry. Around the world, India's low-cost space missions make us the preferred partner for 34 countries who want to send their satellites to space.
Roads: Connecting every part of India
In 2014, India had 91,287 km of national highways. We were building roads at 11.7 km per day. By 2024, our highway network grew 1.6 times to 146,145 km. Now we build roads at 34 km per day - almost three times faster. The government spent Rs 3.01 lakh crore ($36.09 billion) on roads in 2024, which is about 1% of our total GDP. This money came from private investment and selling government assets (Rs 40,314 crore in 2024). The Bharatmala Pariyojana project improved connectivity across the country, reduced the cost of transporting goods, and boosted trade. For people living in villages, better roads mean they can easily reach markets to sell their products, send children to better schools, and get to hospitals quickly. In cities, there is less traffic jam. Globally, India's rank in the World Bank's Logistics Performance Index improved from 44th in 2018 to 38th, showing our progress.
Railways: Making our lifeline modern
In 2014, Indian Railways carried 8.4 billion passengers every year. But our trains and tracks were old, and only 21,801 km of railway lines had electricity. The government spent Rs 85,000 crore on railways. By 2024, we carry 9.1 billion passengers every year. The government now spends Rs 2.6 lakh crore on railways - 77% more than before. We have electrified 68,000 km of railway lines, which is 93% of our entire network. This reduces pollution from trains. Big projects like the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line have connected Jammu and Kashmir to the rest of India. We now have fast Vande Bharat trains, and the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train is almost ready. For Indians, this means faster, cleaner, and safer train journeys. Villages are now better connected to big cities for business. Globally, Indian Railways contributes 3% to our GDP and is becoming more environment-friendly.
Education: Teaching a new generation
In 2014, India had 16 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), 13 Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), and very few skill development programs. By 2025, education has completely changed. We now have 23 IITs (7 new ones) and 21 IIMs (8 new ones, including IIM Mumbai, which was earlier called NITIE). This gives more students access to world-class education. The Skill India Mission, started in 2015, has trained 1.4 crore young people and upskilled 54 lakh people. We have set up 3,000 new Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) by 2024. The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) trained nearly 18 lakh youth by 2016, with a target of 1 crore by 2020. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 has changed how we teach, focusing on digital learning through platforms like DIKSHA and SWAYAM. These platforms helped millions of students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Since 2014, we have also built 15 new All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), 16 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and 390 universities. For Indians, this means better access to quality education and skills, especially in smaller cities, which helps people get better jobs. Globally, Indian students and professionals are competing successfully worldwide. However, we still have challenges - only 47.38% of our graduates can get jobs easily after finishing their studies.
Health: A healthier India, world leader
In 2014, India's health system was under pressure. Many people couldn't afford healthcare, and sanitation was poor. By 2025, big programmes have changed everything. The Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Mission) built 60 million toilets by 2019, improving hygiene, especially for women. Ayushman Bharat, started in 2018, is the world's largest health insurance scheme. It covers 10 crore families, giving each family Rs 5 lakh for medical treatment. Over 1 lakh people benefited within just one month of starting. The Ayush sector (traditional Indian medicine) is growing fast. Global demand was $657.5 billion in 2020, and India's Ayush sector grew 17% from 2014 to 2020. This made India a popular destination for medical tourism. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India produced Covaxin and Covishield vaccines. We supplied vaccines to many countries, earning the title "Pharmacy of the World." We have built 15 new AIIMS since 2014, giving people better access to healthcare. For Indians, this means better healthcare from village clinics to big city hospitals. Globally, India's health diplomacy, including sending vaccines to other countries and hosting the WHO's Global Centre for Traditional Medicine, has made us a world leader in health.
World relations: India's voice shapes the world
India's leadership of the G20 group in 2023 was a big diplomatic success. We showed leadership on climate change, digital technology, and disaster preparedness. We started initiatives like the International Solar Alliance and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure, showing that India solves global problems. Modi's strong stand against terrorism at the G20 strengthened India's fight for peace. At home, this global leadership makes Indians proud. Our digital platforms like Aadhaar and CoWIN are being used as examples by other countries. India's leadership in renewable energy - we are 3rd in renewable power, 4th in wind energy, and 5th in solar energy - increases our soft power around the world.
Problems we still face
Despite all this progress, we still have challenges. Income inequality is high, our per capita GDP of $2,880 is still much lower than Japan's $33,000, and 234 million people are still poor. We need policies that help everyone equally. Youth unemployment is 13.8%, and not everyone has equal access to education and healthcare. These problems need immediate attention. Global trade tensions and rising oil prices could slow our growth, so we need to keep making reforms. But we are on the right track. Experts predict our GDP will reach $5.7 trillion by 2028, making us the world's 3rd largest economy, if we balance growth with making sure everyone benefits.
India is reborn
In 11 years, Modi's vision has made India a global leader. Economically, we jumped from 10th to 4th position. In defence, we went from being a small exporter to supplying weapons to 90 countries. In space, we went from having potential to becoming pioneers who reached the Moon's South Pole. In infrastructure, we went from slow growth to building world-class roads and railways. In education, we went from having limited institutions to becoming a hub of IITs, IIMs, and skilled youth. In health, we went from struggling systems to becoming a global healthcare model. At home, 25 crore people have come out of poverty. Millions have got jobs, healthcare, and better connectivity. Globally, India now influences important discussions from climate change to world peace. This is not just progress - this is a confident India that inspires its people and the world with a vision of unlimited possibilities. (Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. When we compare where India was in 2014 to where we are in 2025, we can see how much our nation has grown

A new dawn: 11 years of India's remarkable journey with PM Modi

The relationship between US President Donald Trump and billionaire Elon Musk has had its ups and downs over the years. However, things took a serious turn on Thursday, 5th June, ending what seemed like a strong partnership in the White House. The trouble began after a disagreement over Trump’s new tax bill, which has sparked growing tension in recent days. The situation worsened when Musk openly criticized the bill and even suggested that President Trump should be impeached (formally removed from office through a legal process). In a series of social media posts, Elon Musk made personal attacks on Donald Trump. He eventually made a bold claim—without providing any proof—that Trump’s name appears in the “Epstein files” (a set of documents linked to Jeffrey Epstein, who was accused of running a sex trafficking ring involving many powerful people). Trump, on the other hand, hit back with a series of posts on social media. He claimed that he had personally asked Elon Musk to step down from his role in the White House. Trump also hinted at the possibility of stopping government funding and contracts that have been given to Musk’s companies, which could affect their business operations. So, how did the relationship between Musk and Trump fall apart? And what could happen next between the man often called the world’s richest and the one known as the world’s most powerful? The good times Just a few months ago, before their public fight began, Musk and Trump appeared to be strongly united and working closely together in politics. Musk had spent almost $200 million to help Trump win a second term in the 2024 election. Soon after Trump was re-elected, he showed his appreciation by giving Musk a top role—he put him in charge of a new government agency called the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which was created to reduce waste and improve how the government works. Even the name of the department showed how much influence Musk had in Trump’s government, according to reports by Al Jazeera. The word “DOGE” comes from a popular internet meme (a humorous image, video, or phrase that spreads quickly online) featuring a dog, which Musk often used and promoted. This meme became widely known around 2010. Naming a serious government agency after it highlighted the level of freedom and control Musk had within Trump’s administration. In the first few weeks of Trump’s second term, Musk quickly became one of the most powerful and talked-about people in the government. He also faced a lot of public criticism. As the head of DOGE, he led major cutbacks—thousands of federal employees were fired, and many government departments were downsized. One of the biggest changes was at the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which saw its staff and programs heavily reduced. Musk seemed so influential in the government that some Democrats jokingly started calling him “President Elon” just to annoy Trump and highlight how much control Musk appeared to have. Despite the criticism, Trump and Musk showed they were united. In a Fox News interview in February, the US President and his advisor sat together and spoke highly of each other, openly expressing their admiration and support. “He knows how to get things done. He’s a real leader,” Trump said about Musk. “I really respect the president. I want to make that clear,” Musk said about Trump. Musk, who was born in South Africa, has started sharing more right-wing opinions in recent years. He has also become openly critical of the Democratic Party and people with progressive (liberal or left-leaning) views. Musk’s right-leaning views became more noticeable after he bought the social media platform Twitter (now called X) in 2022. As he shifted more towards the right, he began using the platform to strongly criticize illegal immigration and what he saw as restrictions on free speech. He especially targeted topics like identity politics and how the COVID-19 pandemic was handled and discussed U.S Former President Joe Biden has generally supported the following positions, which Elon Musk has criticized: 1. Immigration Reform Biden has backed a more compassionate approach to immigration, including: Creating a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. Easing restrictions on asylum seekers. Opposing mass deportations. Musk, on the other hand, has spoken out against illegal immigration, calling for tighter border controls.2. Identity Politics Biden often acknowledges and supports social justice movements, including: Promoting diversity and inclusion. Supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Addressing racial inequality. Musk has criticized this as "identity politics", which he believes divides people and limits open discussion.3. COVID-19 Policies During the pandemic, Biden supported Mask mandates, lockdowns, and vaccination drives. Removing misinformation from social media about COVID-19. Musk opposed many of these moves, arguing they restricted personal freedom and free speech. In short, Biden leaned toward progressive policies on immigration, social justice, and pandemic response, while Musk increasingly supported more conservative or libertarian views, leading to their ideological differences. Even while Musk was shifting towards more right-wing views, he and Trump didn’t always get along. In July 2022, Musk posted that Trump was becoming “too old to lead anything,” let alone be president. At first, Musk didn’t even support Trump for the 2024 election. Instead, he backed Trump’s Republican rival, Ron DeSantis, and even hosted the Florida governor’s campaign launch on his platform, X (formerly Twitter). However, everything changed after a failed attempt to assassinate Trump. In July 2024, during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, a bullet slightly injured Trump. This incident strongly influenced Musk’s support. After the attack, Musk publicly said he would “fully endorse” Trump as the Republican candidate. He even stood by Trump during a visit back to Butler in September that same year, showing his complete support for the former president. The Split Trump’s close friendship—or “bromance”—with Musk started falling apart after a few tense months. There had been growing talk of private arguments between Musk and some key people in the president’s team, hinting that all was not well behind the scenes. In April, Musk said he would start spending less time at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). By then, it was clear that his influence in the government was shrinking. He was no longer making big news or frequently seen in the Oval Office with President Trump, as he once was. In late May, Musk openly criticized the White House's tax and budget plan called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.Speaking on the CBS Sunday Morning show, Musk said, “Honestly, I was disappointed to see such a huge spending plan. Instead of cutting down the budget deficit, it makes it worse. It also goes against what the DOGE team has been working hard to fix.” The bill includes cuts to electric vehicle (EV) subsidies, which help Musk’s Tesla company. However, Musk says that’s not the main reason he’s against it. He says he opposes the bill because it adds to the country’s growing debt and is filled with complicated rules and details. In fact, the bill is over 1,000 pages long, making it hard to understand and manage. Trump, who is known for being outspoken and often picking fights, surprisingly stayed calm when Musk first started criticizing the bill. Even though he had strongly backed the bill as a key part of his economic plan, he told reporters, “I’m not happy with some parts of it either,” showing he had a few concerns himself. Soon after, the two appeared together in the Oval Office, where Trump marked the end of Musk’s official role as a special government employee. However, even at that event, Trump said Musk was “not really leaving,” suggesting that he still considered Musk part of his team in some way. After stepping down from his government role, Musk didn’t just speak out against the budget bill—he seemed to be actively trying to stop it. The bill had barely made it through the House of Representatives and was now facing a tough battle in the Senate as well. On Monday, Musk posted on X, saying, “I’m sorry, but I just can’t take it anymore. This huge spending bill from Congress is filled with wasteful spending and is completely unacceptable.” Musk added, “Those who voted for this should be ashamed. Deep down, you know it was the wrong thing to do.”On Thursday, 5th June, the US President responded sharply, beginning with a public appearance in the Oval Office alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. “I’m really disappointed,” Trump said. “Elon understood the details of this bill better than most people here. At first, he was fine with it—then suddenly, he started having a problem with it.” Trump told the reporters that Musk was upset mainly because of the government’s new electric vehicle (EV) policies. He also guessed that Musk probably wanted to remain in the White House and wasn’t happy about leaving. “I’ll be honest—I think he misses being here,” Trump said. “It’s like a case of what I call ‘Trump derangement syndrome.’ Others have gone through it too. They leave the White House, and when they wake up the next day, the excitement is gone. Billionaire betrayal: Musk slams Trump, risks SpaceX future

Musk, on the other hand, has spoken out against illegal immigration, calling for tighter border controls. 2. Identity Politics Biden often acknowledges and supports social justice movements, including: Promoting diversity and inclusion. Supporting LGBTQ+ rights. Addressing racial inequality. Musk has criticized this as "identity politics", which he believes divides people and limits open discussion. 3. In late May, Musk openly criticized the White House's tax and budget plan called the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Speaking on the CBS Sunday Morning show, Musk said, “Honestly, I was disappointed to see such a huge spending plan. Deep down, you know it was the wrong thing to do.” On Thursday, 5th June, the US President responded sharply, beginning with a public appearance in the Oval Office alongside German Chancellor Friedrich Merz. Everything feels different, and they start acting angry or bitter.” After that, Trump continued his criticism on his own social media platform, Truth Social. Trump wrote in a post on social media, “Elon was becoming too much to deal with, so I asked him to step down. I also removed the EV mandate that forced people to buy electric cars—even though he knew for months I planned to do it. The Russia-Ukraine war has reached a terrifying new peak with Ukraine’s bold “Operation Spider Web” striking deep into Russian territory. This massive drone attack, involving 117 drones targeting Russian airfields, has been hailed by President Volodymyr Zelensky as Ukraine’s most daring long-range operation yet. The strike hit strategic sites, disrupting Russia’s ability to launch cruise missiles to some extent. But this audacious move has raised a chilling question: Will Vladimir Putin retaliate with the RS-28 Sarmat, the fearsome intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) known as “Satan 2”? The Satan 2, in development since 2009 and also called SS-X-30 by NATO, is a monstrous weapon designed to replace the 1970s-era Satan ICBM. Will Putin’s Satan 2 annihilate Ukraine after the Operation Spider Web assault?

As we observe Anti-Terrorism Day on May 21, 2025, our hearts are heavy yet hopeful. This day, marked every year to honour the memory of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, who was tragically assassinated by terrorists in 1991, reminds us of the deep scars terrorism has left on our nation. This year, the recent Operation Sindoor, a bold and precise military response to the horrific Pahalgam attack, gives us a moment to reflect on India’s unyielding spirit against terrorism. As we stand united, let us ponder the meaning of this day, the significance of Operation Sindoor, and the path ahead for a peaceful India.
The Pain of Pahalgam and the Birth of Operation Sindoor
On April 22, 2025, terror struck the serene valley of Pahalgam in Jammu agirisnd Kashmir. Twenty-six innocent lives, mostly Hindu tourists, were brutally taken by terrorists linked to Pakistan-based groups like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM). The attackers, in a calculated act of cruelty, targeted men, leaving their wives widowed, their sindoor—a sacred symbol of marriage—wiped away. The pain of this tragedy shook the nation, reminding us that terrorism knows no humanity, no religion, no boundaries. In response, on May 7, 2025, the Indian Armed Forces launched Operation Sindoor, a meticulously planned operation that targeted nine terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK). Named after the vermilion mark that signifies the bond of marriage, the operation was a powerful message: India will not let the blood of its people be shed in vain. Over 100 terrorists, including high-profile figures like Yusuf Azhar, linked to the 1999 IC-814 hijacking, and others involved in the Pulwama attack, were eliminated. The strikes, carried out with precision using missiles and drones, destroyed terror hubs in places like Muridke and Bahawalpur, which have long been breeding grounds for anti-India activities
A Nation United Against Terror
Operation Sindoor was not just a military success; it was a symbol of India’s unity and resolve. From political leaders across parties to ordinary citizens, the nation stood shoulder to shoulder with the government and the armed forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, addressing an all-party meeting, emphasized that the operation was “ongoing” and that India would respond firmly to any escalation. Leaders like West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Congress’s Rahul Gandhi hailed the armed forces, proving that when it comes to fighting terrorism, India speaks in one voiceThe operation also sent a clear message to the world: India will not tolerate terrorism. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking at a press briefing, exposed Pakistan’s links with terrorist groups, calling out their “state-sponsored” terror networks. The precision of the strikes, which avoided civilian and military targets, showed India’s commitment to responsible action, even in the face of provocation
The Deeper Meaning of Anti-Terrorism Day
Anti-Terrorism Day is not just about remembering the past; it is about renewing our pledge to fight terror in all its forms. Terrorism is a cancer that thrives on fear, division, and hatred. It does not care about religion, caste, or creed—it only seeks to destroy. The Pahalgam attack was a stark reminder of this, as terrorists targeted innocent tourists enjoying the beauty of Kashmir, a land we proudly call the “crown of India.” Yet, Operation Sindoor shows us that India is no longer a nation that will sit quietly. From the 2016 surgical strikes to the 2019 Balakot airstrike, and now Operation Sindoor, India has evolved its strategy. We are no longer reacting; we are pre-empting, striking at the roots of terror before they can harm our people. This shift, as experts note, reflects a “strategic clarity” in India’s approach, where we reserve the right to act against terror, no matter where it hides. But fighting terrorism is not just about military might. It is about building a society that rejects hatred and embraces peace. On Anti-Terrorism Day, we must ask ourselves: How can we, as Indians, contribute to this fight? It starts with small steps—rejecting divisive narratives, supporting our security forces, and educating our youth about the values of unity and tolerance. Schools, colleges, and communities must come together to spread the message that terrorism has no place in our diverse, vibrant nation.
The Road Ahead: Challenges and Hope
While Operation Sindoor was a success, it also highlighted the challenges we face. Pakistan’s retaliation, including shelling in Jammu and Kashmir that killed 12 civilians and one soldier, shows that the path to peace is not easy. The international community, including the United Nations and the United States, has called for restraint, but India has made it clear: we will not escalate, but we will not back down either. The operation also exposed the deep-rooted terror networks in Pakistan, which continue to thrive with state support. Destroying camps is a step, but the ideology of terror is harder to defeat. India must continue to use diplomacy, intelligence, and international pressure to isolate those who sponsor terrorism. As AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi suggested, an international campaign to designate groups like The Resistance Front (TRF) as global terrorist organizations could be a powerful tool. At home, we must strengthen our security measures. The Pahalgam attack showed that terrorists can still exploit vulnerabilities. Our forces are combing Kashmir’s forests, searching for the attackers, but we need better intelligence, community cooperation, and modern technology to prevent such tragedies. At the same time, we must ensure that our fight against terror does not alienate innocent citizens. The detentions and strict measures in Kashmir must be balanced with efforts to win hearts and minds.
A Call to Every Indian
As we mark Anti-Terrorism Day, let Operation Sindoor inspire us. It is a reminder that our brave soldiers, from the Army to the Air Force and Navy, are ready to protect us. But they cannot do it alone. Every Indian has a role to play. Let us honour the memory of those lost in Pahalgam, and countless other attacks, by building a nation that stands united against terror. Let us teach our children the value of peace, not hatred. Let us support our government and forces, not with blind faith, but with constructive ideas and vigilance. And let us dream of a day when the sindoor on every forehead shines bright, untouched by the shadow of terror. This Anti-Terrorism Day, let us pledge to make India a beacon of hope, strength, and unity—a nation that not only fights terror but defeats it, once and for all.

As we stand united, let us ponder the meaning of this day, the significance of Operation Sindoor, and the path ahead for a peaceful India.

The strikes, carried out with precision using missiles and drones, destroyed terror hubs in places like Muridke and Bahawalpur, which have long been breeding grounds for anti-India activities A Nation United Against Terror Operation Sindoor was not just a military success; it was a symbol of India’s unity and resolve. From political leaders across parties to ordinary citizens, the nation stood shoulder to shoulder with the government and the armed forces. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, addressing an all-party meeting, emphasized that the operation was “ongoing” and that India would respond firmly to any escalation. Leaders like West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Congress’s Rahul Gandhi hailed the armed forces, proving that when it comes to fighting terrorism, India speaks in one voice The operation also sent a clear message to the world: India will not tolerate terrorism. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, speaking at a press briefing, exposed Pakistan’s links with terrorist groups, calling out their “state-sponsored” terror networks. The precision of the strikes, which avoided civilian and military targets, showed India’s commitment to responsible action, even in the face of provocation The Deeper Meaning of Anti-Terrorism Day Anti-Terrorism Day is not just about remembering the past; it is about renewing our pledge to fight terror in all its forms. The Road Ahead: Challenges and Hope While Operation Sindoor was a success, it also highlighted the challenges we face. A Call to Every Indian As we mark Anti-Terrorism Day, let Operation Sindoor inspire us.

From Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination to Sindoor’s wrath: Anti-Terrorism Day vows India’s vengeance

India has taken a giant leap in modern warfare with Bhargavastra, a homegrown, low-cost counter-drone system developed by Economic Explosives Ltd (EEL), a subsidiary of Solar Group. Successfully tested on May 13, 2025 at Gopalpur’s Seaward Firing Range, this state-of-the-art weapon neutralised drone swarms with precision. Alongside India’s strategic deployment of drones during Operation Sindoor launched in response to the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Bhargavastra has positioned India as a global leader in drone warfare.
This twin approach—combining drone strikes with anti-drone defence—has reshaped India’s battlefield readiness, enhancing both offensive and defensive capabilities.

Bhargavastra: India’s Drone-Killing Shield

Bhargavastra acts like an eagle, spotting and eliminating hostile drones before they strike. It has a two-tier kill mechanism:
First Layer: Fires unguided micro-rockets with a 20-metre blast radius, designed to wipe out drone clusters swiftly.
Second Layer: Launches precision-guided micro-missiles to destroy high-value or evasive aerial targets with surgical accuracy.
What makes Bhargavastra unique is its versatility. It can be upgraded with “soft-kill” features—such as jamming and spoofing—to confuse enemy drones. Its adaptability allows deployment by the Army, Navy, and Air Force, from desert terrain to high-altitude regions like Ladakh, operating efficiently even at altitudes above 5,000 metres.
During its successful trials, supervised by Army Air Defence officials, Bhargavastra executed both single and salvo-mode launches—firing two rockets in just two seconds. All tests met performance targets with direct hits.

Proudly Made in India

Every component—sensors, launchers, and control systems—is developed in India. Equipped with advanced radar, electro-optical cameras, and RF receivers, Bhargavastra detects small and incoming drones up to 2.5 km away and identifies threats using radar detection up to 6 km, with enhanced tracking through optical and RF systems.
At the heart of the system lies a C4I-powered Command-and-Control Centre (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, and Intelligence), ensuring seamless coordination. It fits perfectly into India’s network-centric warfare model, boosting situational awareness and rapid response.

Drones in Operation Sindoor: A New Era of Warfare

Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India’s bold retaliation to the April 22 Pahalgam attack, which killed 26 civilians. The tri-service mission saw the Indian Army, Air Force, and Navy strike nine terror hubs across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
For the first time, drones played a central role. India deployed SkyStriker kamikaze drones—co-developed by Adani Group’s Alpha Design Technologies and Israel’s Elbit Systems—to surgically hit targets. These Bengaluru-made drones, with a 100 km range and 5–10 kg warheads, demonstrated precision and cost-effectiveness.
Pakistan’s response was a massive drone swarm—nearly 400 drones, including Turkish-made SONGAR variants—targeting 26 locations across India, from Leh to Sir Creek. These attacks hit military bases and civilian zones, injuring people in Punjab’s Ferozepur. However, India’s layered air defence—including Bhargavastra—intercepted over 600 aerial threats within six days.
India also deployed high-energy lasers and its own drones to destroy enemy swarms, marking a shift from conventional to high-tech warfare.

A Technological Turning Point

India’s LMS kamikaze drones—developed with DRDO—used thermal imaging, AI navigation, and NTRO-supplied real-time data to hit targets without collateral damage. Over 100 terrorists were neutralised in the nine strikes.
These capabilities show that drones are not just surveillance tools—they are decisive military assets. Bhargavastra addresses this threat affordably and efficiently, making India the first country to field such a flexible, indigenous counter-swarm solution.

Setting a Global Benchmark

India’s performance in Operation Sindoor—striking terror camps with drones and blocking enemy swarms—showcases a balanced military posture. Social media buzzed with praise for Bhargavastra, calling it a “nightmare” for Turkish and Chinese drones. Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed Operation Sindoor the “new normal” in India’s counter-terrorism doctrine.
A Symbol of Atmanirbharta (Self-Reliance)
Bhargavastra is not just a defence system; it’s a symbol of Indian ingenuity. With EEL, DRDO, and Adani Group working in tandem, India has built a robust and scalable solution to modern aerial threats.
As drone warfare redefines battlefields globally, from Ukraine to Gaza, India stands at the forefront with Bhargavastra. This is not just a technological triumph—it’s a national milestone.
India’s future battles won’t just be fought with guns and tanks—but with brains, bytes, and brilliant homegrown tech like Bhargavastra.

Bhargavastra: India’s game-changing drone slayer redefines defence power

As an Indian, I feel immense pride in our defence industry, especially when I compare it with Turkey’s, keeping in mind events like Operation Sindoor. India’s military strength, driven by home-grown systems like BrahMos, Akash, and Akashteer, is soaring. But Turkey’s support for Pakistan during this operation, supplying drones and taking anti-India stances, shows their true colours. Let’s break it down in simple words, from an Indian perspective.

India’s Defence Industry: A Self-Reliant Giant

India’s defence sector is booming. We’re not just importing weapons; we’re building world-class systems under “Make in India.” Take the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile—jointly developed with Russia, it’s one of the fastest and most precise missiles globally, capable of hitting targets 450 km away from land, sea, or air. During Operation Sindoor, BrahMos was a game-changer, striking terror camps in Pakistan and PoK with pinpoint accuracy. Then there’s the Akash missile system, which defends our skies by shooting down enemy aircraft and missiles up to 30 km away. Its advanced version, Akashteer, integrates our air defence network, making it smarter and faster, neutralising Pakistani drones in seconds.

We also have the D-4 anti-drone system and the S-400 from Russia, both of which crushed Pakistan’s attacks during Operation Sindoor. Our defence budget, around $81 billion, is among the world’s highest, fuelling companies like DRDO, HAL, and Bharat Dynamics to produce Tejas jets, radars, and missiles. While we import from Russia (36%), France (33%), Israel (18%) and US (11%) our focus is clear: self-reliance. Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025, to avenge the Pahalgam terror attack, proved this. In just 25 minutes, we destroyed nine terror sites, eight Pakistani airbases, and over 100 terrorists, showcasing systems like BrahMos, Akash, and Akashteer in action.

Turkey’s Defence Industry: Growing but Outclassed

Turkey’s defence industry is ambitious but falls short of India’s might. Their $20 billion defence budget supports drones like Bayraktar TB2 and Songar, which Pakistan used against us in Operation Sindoor. Companies like Baykar and TAI export drones, warships, and jets to countries like Pakistan, and Turkey even banned defence exports to India to favour them. Their drones have seen action in Ukraine and Libya, earning praise, but they rely on foreign tech, like engines, limiting their independence.
Operation Sindoor exposed Turkey’s weaknesses. Pakistan’s Turkish-made Songar drones were shredded by our Akash and Akashteer systems, which one report called “straws in the sky” against India’s air defence grid. Turkish defence stocks crashed after our operation, while Indian markets rallied. Turkey’s industry may be innovative, but it’s no match for India’s scale and advanced systems like BrahMos, which outranges and outsmarts their tech.
Turkey is also developing a 5th-generation fighter, the TAI TF Kaan, which flew for the first time in 2024 and aims to rival advanced jets with stealth and supercruise by 2028. But it’s still years away, relying on foreign engines and facing technical hurdles. India’s own 5th-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), led by DRDO, is on track for its first flight by 2026, with stealth, AI, and indigenous engines. While Turkey dreams of exporting Kaan to Pakistan, India’s AMCA will strengthen our air dominance, building on the success of systems like BrahMos and Akash. Turkey’s Kaan is a bold step, but India’s proven track record and larger resources give us the edge.

Operation Sindoor: Turkey’s Blunder

Operation Sindoor was a defining moment. After the Pahalgam attack on April 22, 2025, killed 26 people, India struck back hard. Our BrahMos missiles and Akash-Akashteer combo decimated terror camps and stopped Pakistan’s counterattacks, including their Turkish drones and Chinese PL-15 missiles. Turkey’s role was shameful—they supplied Pakistan with drones, sent warships and C-130 planes to replenish stocks, and condemned India’s actions. President Erdoğan even pushed for UN talks on Kashmir, rubbing salt in our wounds.
This betrayal stings, especially after India’s Operation Dost aided Turkey during their 2023 earthquake. Now, Indians are boycotting Turkish goods, and companies like EaseMyTrip have halted bookings to Turkey. Turkey’s defence firm Baykar openly prioritised Pakistan, refusing to sell us drones. Operation Sindoor showed that their tech, like the Songar drone, couldn’t stand up to our BrahMos precision or Akashteer’s rapid response.

Why India Stands Stronger

India’s defence industry is about innovation and resolve. Operation Sindoor highlighted our ability to plan and dominate, with BrahMos striking deep, Akash guarding our skies, and Akashteer coordinating it all. We briefed 70 nations on our success, deliberately excluding Turkey and China, who backed Pakistan. Our air defence grid outclassed their systems, proving our technological edge.
Turkey’s support for Pakistan has backfired. Indian defence stocks soared post-ceasefire, while Turkish and Chinese firms faced losses. Globally, nations trust India as a responsible power, while Turkey’s image suffers for siding with a state even a Pakistani citizen called a “breeder of terrorism.” Our systems like BrahMos and Akashteer are symbols of our strength and self-reliance.

The Way Ahead

As an Indian, I believe we must double down on self-reliance. Operation Sindoor showed the power of BrahMos, Akash, and Akashteer, but we need more indigenous tech, stronger cyber defences, and sharper diplomacy to counter Turkey’s antics. Their support for Pakistan is a wake-up call—trust must be earned. Boycotting Turkish goods is a start, but we should outpace them in innovation and global influence.
Turkey’s defence industry may dream big, but it’s dwarfed by India’s scale, resolve, and moral clarity. Operation Sindoor wasn’t just a military victory; it was a statement—India stands for justice, and our systems like BrahMos and Akashteer will protect us, no matter who stands against us. Turkey picked the wrong side, and they’re paying for it. Let’s keep building our strength and showing the world India’s true power.

India firepower crushes Turkey’s betrayal, Operation Sindoor exposes Pakistan ally

After India’s Operation Sindoor struck nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK on May 7, Pakistan responded by launching 300–400 Turkish-made Songar drones on May 8–9. However, India’s strong air defence network stopped the threat quickly and effectively, proving our readiness and technological edge.

What is the Songar Drone?

The Asisguard Songar is a Turkish combat drone, introduced in 2020. Lightweight, small, and deadly, it’s designed for fast attacks in rough terrain.

Key Features:

Weight: Up to 45 kg Range: 3–10 km Flying Height: Up to 2,800 m Weapons:

5.56 mm machine gun (200 bullets) 40 mm grenade launchers 81 mm mortar bombs (35 m blast radius) Laser-guided missiles (up to 500 m)

Features:

Day/night vision, GPS navigation Can fly alone or in groups (swarm) Automatic return on signal loss or low battery The Songar is also dustproof and can be mounted on 4x4 military vehicles, making it ideal for border warfare. In 2024, it got an upgrade with a six-barrel grenade launcher, making it more dangerous.

India’s Defence: Strong and Layered

India stopped the drone attack using a mix of old and new systems: Shilka Guns: Fire 4,000 rounds per minute to shoot down low-flying drones. L-70 Guns: Older, but upgraded 40 mm guns that target small aerial threats up to 3.5 km. Akash Missiles: Indian-made, 45 km range, can track 64 targets and hit 4 at once. MR-SAM (Barak-8): Indo-Israeli missile with 100 km range, hits 12 targets while tracking 100. S-400 System: Russian long-range system, detects 300 threats, hits 36 at a time with missiles flying up to 400 km. India also used non-kinetic tools like radio jammers, anti-drone nets, and the SAMAR air defence system. Over 50 drones were brought down, especially near Jammu, Pathankot, and Rajasthan.

What does this Mean?

Pakistan’s Dependence on Turkey: The attack proves Pakistan is leaning heavily on Turkish military tech. India’s Indigenous Power: Systems like Akash and SAMAR show India can defend itself without foreign help. Fast Response: Indian forces reacted within minutes, protecting key cities and military zones. India didn’t just defend — it struck back. Indian armed drones destroyed four Pakistani air defence sites and a radar system, making it clear: India won’t hold back.

What lies ahead?

This drone attack is a reminder that future wars will be fought with machines. While Songar drones are powerful, India’s mix of guns, missiles, and sensors makes it ready. Still, as Turkey upgrades its drones, India must keep improving its air defences.
This was a test — and India passed with flying colours. (Disclaimer: The views of the writer do not represent the views of WION or ZMCL. Nor does WION or ZMCL endorse the views of the writer.)

Key Features: Weight: Up to 45 kg Range: 3–10 km Flying Height: Up to 2,800 m Weapons: 5.56 mm machine gun (200 bullets) 40 mm grenade launchers 81 mm mortar bombs (35 m blast radius) Laser-guided missiles (up to 500 m) Features: Day/night vision, GPS navigation Can fly alone or in groups (swarm) Automatic return on signal loss or low battery The Songar is also dustproof and can be mounted on 4x4 military vehicles, making it ideal for border warfare. In 2024, it got an upgrade with a six-barrel grenade launcher, making it more dangerous. India’s Defence: Strong and Layered India stopped the drone attack using a mix of old and new systems: Shilka Guns: Fire 4,000 rounds per minute to shoot down low-flying drones. Turkish Songar vs India’s air defence: How Bharat crushed Pak's drone swarm

In a blazing display of military prowess, India’s Medium-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (MR-SAM), codenamed Barak 8 or 'Abhra,' decimated Pakistan’s desperate aerial counteroffensive during Operation Sindoor on May 8, 2025.
This indigenously developed air defence juggernaut, forged through a fiery collaboration between India’s DRDO and Israel’s IAI, proved its mettle by shredding over 50 Pakistani drones and missiles, safeguarding Indian skies and cementing India’s dominance in the face of terrorism.
Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, 2025, to pulverise nine terrorist strongholds in Pakistan and PoK in retaliation for the heinous Pahalgam attack, showcased not just India’s offensive might but the impregnable shield of the MR-SAM.

MR-SAM: The annihilator of Pakistan’s aerial ambitions

When Pakistan unleashed a swarm of 300–400 drones targeting Indian military bases and cities like Srinagar, Jammu, and Bathinda, the MR-SAM stood as an unyielding sentinel. Its 70 km range and vertical launch capability obliterated threats from every angle, neutralising drones in Udhampur, Samba, Akhnoor, and Pathankot with surgical precision.
Armed with advanced radar and active homing, the system tore through Pakistan’s barrage, ensuring no missile or drone breached India’s defences. This wasn’t just defence, it was a statement: India’s airspace is inviolable.

Synergy of destruction: MR-SAM’s role in India’s Air Defence grid

The MR-SAM didn’t fight alone. Integrated with the S-400 Triumf and Akash systems in India’s Counter-UAS Grid, it formed a layered fortress that Pakistan’s drones couldn’t penetrate.
While the S-400 guarded the skies at long range and Akash tackled closer threats, the MR-SAM’s rapid response and multi-target engagement crushed the enemy’s swarm tactics. From protecting Srinagar airport to thwarting attacks on Bathinda’s military station, the system ensured Pakistan’s retaliation fizzled into futility.

Strategic smackdown: How MR-SAM shaped Operation Sindoor

India’s MR-SAM annihilates Pakistan’s drone horde in Operation Sindoor: A ferocious victory of unrelenting Indian power

In a startling disclosure, the Indian government has accused Pakistan of launching a massive drone attack on Indian cities while cunningly using civilian aircraft as a shield. On Thursday, May 8, 2025, Pakistan kept its airspace open, allowing civilian flights to operate, which India claims was a deliberate ploy to mask their aggressive actions. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condemned the attack, stating that Pakistan targeted civilian buildings, military bases, and religious sites like temples, gurdwaras, and convents, calling it a “new low” for Pakistan.
According to the government, Pakistan likely deployed 300-400 Turkish-made Asisguard Songar armed drones to carry out these attacks across northern India. However, India’s advanced air defence systems sprang into action, successfully jamming and shooting down several of these drones. Tragically, heavy shelling by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch region claimed the lives of two students from a convent school when their home was hit.

Civil flights as cover: India foils Pakistan’s Songar drone strikes

On Wednesday (May 7), India executed a daring tri-services strike—Operation Sindoor—hitting nine terror camps deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. The mission, a direct response to the Pahalgam massacre that killed 26 civilians on April 22, was carried out with stunning precision. All 24 missile impacts evaded Pakistan’s air defense systems, raising critical questions: How did India’s missiles bypass radar detection? Why did Pakistan’s HQ-9, LY-80, and JF-17 Thunder fighters fail? Here’s a comprehensive breakdown of what really happened in the skies.

Pakistan’s Air Defense: Designed to Deter, Not Deflect

Pakistan's multi-layered air defense grid includes:

HQ-9P/HQ-9BE: Long-range systems (100–200 km), based on Chinese tech, with H-200 radars—effective in theory, but less capable against low-altitude or stealthy threats.
LY-80 (HQ-16): Medium-range (40–70 km) SAMs, vulnerable to high-speed missiles like BrahMos.
FD-2000: An HQ-9 export variant, struggling with low-level, fast-flying threats.
JF-17 Thunder: The backbone of Pakistan’s air force, only ~50 equipped with AESA radars (Block III). Most variants lack capability to detect terrain-hugging or stealth missiles.
Despite being spread across key regions like Rawalpindi, Karachi, and Bahawalpur, these systems showed critical gaps—especially against modern, precision-guided munitions.
India’s Missile Arsenal: Built to Evade, Strike, and Vanish
1. SCALP Cruise Missile
Type: Subsonic, stealthy, terrain-hugging
Range: ~560 km
Specialty: Flies just 30–50 meters above ground, avoiding radar by skimming the terrain.
Usage: Fired from Rafales, targeting Muzaffarabad, Bahawalpur, and Muridke. Launched from Indian airspace, it dodged HQ-9 radars with ease.
2. HAMMER Precision Bombs
Type: Smart glide bomb
Guidance: GPS/INS-based
Advantage: Small size, low radar profile; released from high altitudes and glides silently to targets like JeM headquarters.
3. BrahMos Supersonic Missile (Probable Use)
Speed: Mach 2.8–3.0
Flight Path: Sea-skimming-like, altitude as low as 10–15 meters
Impact: Too fast for LY-80 or HQ-9 to react. Even 100 km is covered in under 30 seconds.
4. Loitering Munitions (Speculative)
Function: Drone-like systems for pinpoint strikes
Strength: Extremely stealthy and radar-evading due to slow, low-altitude flight
Tactics That Beat the Radar
1. Low-Altitude Flight
SCALP and BrahMos fly below radar detection thresholds—hugging terrain or using Earth’s curvature to remain unseen. Mountains near Muzaffarabad and Kotli amplified these blind spots.
2. Stealth and Speed
SCALP’s stealth design and BrahMos’s blistering velocity overwhelmed Pakistan’s tracking systems. The small size of HAMMER bombs further helped evade detection.
3. Standoff Launch Strategy
Rafales never entered Pakistani airspace. They launched missiles from bases like Ambala or Jammu, staying beyond the reach of HQ-9 or LY-80 interceptors.
4. Surprise and Timing
Strikes began at 1:44 a.m.—a time when radar operators and patrols like JF-17s were likely inactive. This minimized early warning and reaction.
5. Electronic Warfare (Unconfirmed but Likely)
India’s Rafales carry SPECTRA electronic warfare suites capable of jamming or spoofing enemy radars. This may have disrupted Pakistan’s air defense coordination.

The JF-17 Thunder: Too Little, Too Late

Pakistan’s JF-17s, especially Blocks I and II, lack AESA radars and advanced infrared tracking systems:
Detection Issue: Couldn’t detect SCALP or HAMMER flying low and slow.
Interception Limits: Not equipped with suitable missiles to shoot down cruise missiles.
Response Time: No real-time air patrols at night; fighters scrambled after the damage was done.
Dubious Claims: Pakistan’s claim of downing five Indian jets remains unverified. No pilot was captured, and any crashes were likely due to mechanical failure or SAMs.

Why Pakistan’s Defenses Collapsed

Technological Inferiority

Compared to India’s S-400 or Barak-8, Pakistan’s HQ-9 and LY-80 systems are outdated and struggle with stealth/supersonic threats.

Poor Radar Coverage

Many targets (e.g., Bahawalpur, Kotli, Muzaffarabad) lay in radar shadows or lightly guarded civilian zones.

Time and Terrain

Strikes were timed to exploit low alertness, and terrain aided low-flying missiles in remaining undetected.

Lack of Coordination

Pakistan’s integrated air defense network (IADS) showed signs of poor real-time coordination and response lag.

Conclusion: The Message from Sindoor

India’s Operation Sindoor was a masterclass in strategic planning and modern warfare. Using stealth, standoff, and surprise, India outsmarted Pakistan’s air defence grid. The success of 24 missile strikes—without a single interception—exposes not only technological gaps in Pakistan’s systems but also doctrinal weaknesses in detecting and responding to asymmetric aerial threats. While Pakistan retaliated with JF-17-led strikes, the real story lies in what wasn’t intercepted—and what that says about the future of air warfare in South Asia.

The JF-17 Thunder: Too Little, Too Late Pakistan’s JF-17s, especially Blocks I and II, lack AESA radars and advanced infrared tracking systems: Detection Issue: Couldn’t detect SCALP or HAMMER flying low and slow. Why Pakistan’s Defenses Collapsed Technological Inferiority Compared to India’s S-400 or Barak-8, Pakistan’s HQ-9 and LY-80 systems are outdated and struggle with stealth/supersonic threats. Poor Radar Coverage Many targets (e.g., Bahawalpur, Kotli, Muzaffarabad) lay in radar shadows or lightly guarded civilian zones. Time and Terrain Strikes were timed to exploit low alertness, and terrain aided low-flying missiles in remaining undetected. Lack of Coordination Pakistan’s integrated air defense network (IADS) showed signs of poor real-time coordination and response lag. Conclusion: The Message from Sindoor India’s Operation Sindoor was a masterclass in strategic planning and modern warfare.

Operation Sindoor | How India’s stealth missiles pierced skies as Pakistan’s air defenses crumbled

On the night of May 6-7, 2025, India executed Operation Sindoor, a precise, high-impact military operation targeting terrorist camps deep inside Pakistan. For the first time, the Indian Air Force (IAF) deployed its Rafale fighter jets in active combat—marking a new era in India’s counter-terrorism strategy. The French-built Rafales, with their state-of-the-art technology, proved instrumental in this operation and showcased India’s rising stature in modern warfare.

What Was Operation Sindhoor?

Operation Sindoor was a strategic response to terror attacks linked to Pakistani-backed groups, especially the gruesome Pahalgam incident that killed 26 people. The IAF struck nine terrorist hubs—believed to be located in Muridke, Bahawalpur, Muzaffarabad, and Kotli—while carefully avoiding Pakistani military installations.

Flying within Indian airspace, Rafales launched SCALP cruise missiles and HAMMER precision-guided bombs, hitting targets over 500 km away. All jets returned safely. Even Pakistani sources acknowledged casualties and damage—an unspoken validation of the mission’s effectiveness.

How Rafale Gave India the Edge

1. Long-Range Precision Strikes

The Rafale’s SCALP missiles allowed the IAF to strike deep into enemy territory without breaching Pakistan’s airspace. With ranges beyond 500 km, these weapons ensured high-impact results while keeping Indian pilots out of harm’s way.

2. Superior Technology and Stealth

The SPECTRA electronic warfare suite protected Rafales from enemy detection. Its AESA radar tracked multiple targets in hostile conditions. During Operation Sindoor, this tech-enabled stealth-like penetration—vital in avoiding Pakistani radar and missile defences.

3. Multi-Role Capability

The Rafale is designed for simultaneous air-to-air, air-to-ground, and reconnaissance missions. In the operation, it used SCALP for long-range targets and HAMMER bombs for pinpoint accuracy—demonstrating unmatched mission flexibility.

4. Terrain Mastery

Flying low over mountainous terrain near the LoC, Rafales leveraged terrain-following tech to stay undetected. Former IAF Chief B.S. Dhanoa had earlier remarked that the Rafale “blinds the enemy” using geography—a tactic likely employed in this mission.

5. Confidence and Credibility Boost

Unlike the 2019 Balakot strike (which used older Mirage 2000s), the Rafale’s advanced capabilities ensured a cleaner, safer, and more impactful mission. It reinforced the IAF’s strike credibility while signalling to adversaries that India means business.

Why Rafale Matters for India’s Defence Future

India currently operates 36 Rafales, stationed at Ambala and Hashimara to counter threats from Pakistan and China. With 26 more Rafale Marine variants coming for the Navy, India is cementing its air and maritime superiority.
Rafales can carry a wide array of weapons—MICA for air combat, AM39 EXOCET for ship targets, and eventually indigenous weapons like the Astra missile. The jet is a force multiplier.
Importantly, the deal includes technology transfers and maintenance facilities under “Make in India,” like the one planned near Jewar airport—boosting local jobs and self-reliance.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

While effective, the Rafale programme is not without its critics. The ₹58,000 crore deal was politically contentious but has been cleared by the Supreme Court in two rulings. Now, the focus must shift to expanding India’s Rafale fleet and enhancing integration with Indian-made systems.
With ageing MiG-21s and MiG-27s retiring, India must fast-track the acquisition of more Rafales or similar modern fighters to keep pace with China’s expanding fleet.

A Moment of National Pride

Operation Sindoor marks a proud chapter in India’s security narrative. Rafales, flying high and striking deep, have redefined how India conducts strategic retaliatory operations. As one viral post on X put it:
“Rafales have turned out to be the game-changer... missiles launched without crossing the border. Jai Hind!”
For millions of Indians, the Rafale is more than a fighter jet—it is a symbol of strength, technological progress, and unyielding resolve.

Rafale's role in Operation Sindoor: A game-changer for India's Defence

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into military systems is reshaping the global strategic landscape, and nowhere is this transformation more consequential than in South Asia, where India and Pakistan’s longstanding rivalry persists. As India accelerates its AI-driven defence modernisation, questions arise about whether this technological edge will be used to bolster deterrence against Pakistan or risk destabilising an already fragile balance. The answer lies in India’s strategic priorities, the evolving nature of warfare, and the delicate dance of deterrence in a nuclear-armed region.
India’s commitment to AI in defence is unmistakable. The establishment of the Defence Artificial Intelligence Council, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, and the Military AI Project Agency with a $13.2 million annual budget signal a robust push toward AI-enhanced capabilities. From autonomous drones to AI-powered surveillance systems along the Line of Control (LoC), India is developing tools to improve decision-making, precision warfare, and cybersecurity. The deployment of 140 AI-based surveillance systems, equipped with high-resolution cameras and radar feeds, underscores India’s focus on real-time situational awareness—a critical asset in countering Pakistan’s asymmetric tactics, such as cross-border militancy.
Pakistan, while lagging in AI development, is not standing still. The National Centre for Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), established in 2018, and the Pakistan Air Force’s Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Computing (CENTAIC) are advancing AI applications in electronic warfare and drone technology, such as the Burraq drone. Pakistan’s collaboration with China, a global leader in AI militarisation, further amplifies its potential to narrow the technological gap. However, resource constraints and reliance on external partners limit Pakistan’s ability to match India’s scale and pace.

For India, AI offers a double-edged sword in its deterrence strategy. On one hand, superior AI capabilities could strengthen conventional deterrence by enhancing India’s ability to detect and neutralise threats swiftly. AI-driven systems, such as autonomous combat vehicles or swarm drones, could enable precise, surgical strikes—similar to those in 2016 and 2019—while minimising escalation risks. By projecting technological dominance, India could dissuade Pakistan from provocative actions, reinforcing a deterrence-by-denial posture. Moreover, AI’s role in cybersecurity, as demonstrated by India’s countermeasures against Pakistani cyberattacks post-Pahalgam, could protect critical infrastructure, further solidifying India’s strategic edge.
On the other hand, the militarisation of AI risks destabilising deterrence dynamics. Pakistan perceives India’s AI advancements as a threat to its strategic calculus, particularly its nuclear deterrence. AI’s ability to process vast data and target mobile nuclear assets could lower the nuclear threshold in a crisis, as Pakistan might fear a preemptive strike. The speed of AI-driven decision-making, while efficient, could also lead to miscalculations, especially in the fog of frequent LoC skirmishes. Pakistan’s response—a mix of psychological warfare, missile tests, and cyber operations—suggests it views India’s AI push as a challenge to the regional balance of power.
The ethical and operational risks of AI further complicate India’s deterrence strategy. Fully autonomous weapons, or Lethal Autonomous Weapon Systems (LAWS), raise concerns about unintended escalations, as highlighted by former Indian Army Chief Gen. M.M. Naravane. Biases in AI algorithms, if not addressed, could lead to catastrophic errors in targeting or intelligence analysis. The absence of global regulations on military AI exacerbates these risks, leaving India and Pakistan to navigate uncharted territory without clear norms.
So, will India opt to deter Pakistan through AI-embedded warfare? The evidence suggests a cautious yes. India’s investments indicate a strategic intent to leverage AI for conventional superiority, aiming to deter Pakistan’s low-intensity provocations while avoiding nuclear escalation. However, India must tread carefully. Overreliance on AI could provoke Pakistan into compensatory actions, such as deeper alignment with China or accelerated nuclear modernisation, eroding strategic stability. The 2025 Pahalgam attack and subsequent tensions underscore how quickly mistrust can spiral, with both nations resorting to cyberattacks and diplomatic brinkmanship.

To maximise deterrence while minimising risks, India should pair its AI advancements with confidence-building measures (CBMs). Bilateral AI incident reporting centres, as proposed by some analysts, could reduce misperceptions. Track-II diplomacy and dedicated communication channels for AI-related matters could foster transparency, mitigating the trust deficit that fuels escalation. India should also advocate for regional AI arms control discussions, drawing on its global diplomatic clout to set norms that constrain destabilising applications.
In the end, AI-embedded warfare offers India a powerful tool to deter Pakistan, but it is not a silver bullet. Strategic restraint, coupled with technological prowess, will determine whether India can strengthen deterrence without tipping South Asia into a new era of instability. The stakes—regional peace, nuclear stability, and human lives—could not be higher.
