Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan: Pakistan’s twin crises that could spell doom in a war with India

The Indian Navy’s deployment of INS Vikrant, its indigenous aircraft carrier, alongside the stealthy Kalvari-class submarines following the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, has reshaped the strategic landscape in the Arabian Sea. With tensions escalating between India and Pakistan, this formidable combination signals India’s naval dominance and its intent to deter its western neighbour. A key question arises: can the Kalvari-class submarines carry nuclear warheads, and how does this capability—or lack thereof—strengthen India’s deterrence against Pakistan? This article explores the Kalvari submarines’ armament, their role in India’s naval strategy, and how they, alongside INS Vikrant, create a powerful deterrent, all while clarifying the nuclear question.

The Kalvari-class submarines, built under Project 75 with French collaboration, are diesel-electric stealth platforms designed for silent, undetectable operations. These submarines, including INS Kalvari, INS Vagir, and the recently commissioned INS Vagsheer, are equipped with Exocet SM-39 anti-ship missiles, which have a 70 km range and carry a 165 kg conventional warhead. A single missile can sink a 3,000-tonne ship or destroy critical infrastructure like Pakistan’s Karachi or Gwadar ports. Additionally, they can deploy up to 30 naval mines to disrupt maritime routes and carry SUT torpedoes for anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare. However, there is no official confirmation or credible evidence that Kalvari-class submarines are designed to carry nuclear warheads. These submarines are primarily conventional platforms optimised for anti-ship, anti-submarine, and mine-laying roles. India’s nuclear-capable submarine assets are limited to its Arihant-class ballistic missile submarines (SSBNs), like INS Arihant and INS Arighat, which carry K-15 Sagarika or K-4 missiles with nuclear warheads. The Kalvari-class, being smaller diesel-electric attack submarines (SSKs), lack the infrastructure, such as vertical launch systems or missile tubes, needed for nuclear ballistic or cruise missiles.

This distinction is critical. While the Kalvari submarines do not contribute to India’s nuclear triad, their conventional firepower is a significant deterrent. Their ability to stealthily approach Pakistan’s coastline, strike naval assets, or blockade ports like Karachi, which handles over 60% of Pakistan’s trade, poses a severe economic and military threat. By deploying mines or sinking ships, these submarines can choke Pakistan’s supply lines, disrupting oil imports and exports. This capability, combined with their near-undetectable nature, creates a psychological and strategic advantage, forcing Pakistan’s navy to rethink its maritime strategy.

INS Vikrant amplifies this deterrence. Operating 600–700 km from Pakistan’s coast, Vikrant is a floating airbase with MiG-29K jets capable of striking targets 800 km away, Kamov-31 helicopters for early warning, and HAL Dhruv for anti-submarine roles. Protected by Barak-8 missiles and advanced EL/M-2248 MF-STAR radars, Vikrant is a tough target. Its Carrier Battle Group, including Kolkata-class destroyers, Talwar-class frigates, and Kalvari submarines, forms a multi-layered shield and sword. While Vikrant’s aircraft are not nuclear-capable, their precision strikes can target Pakistan’s coastal infrastructure or naval bases, complementing the submarines’ covert operations. Together, they dominate the Arabian Sea, projecting power without needing nuclear escalation.

Pakistan’s navy pales in comparison. Its ageing Agosta 90B submarines and limited frigates struggle against India’s modern fleet. The upcoming Chinese-built Hangor-class submarines, meant to rival the Kalvari-class, are not yet fully operational. Satellite imagery from April 2025 showed most Pakistani submarines docked, highlighting their vulnerability. Pakistan’s reliance on Chinese and Turkish upgrades also risks supply chain issues, unlike India’s growing indigenous capabilities. A naval blockade by India could cripple Pakistan’s economy, as Karachi’s disruption would halt trade, creating domestic pressure on Islamabad.

The deterrence lies in India’s ability to dominate without nuclear weapons. The Kalvari submarines’ conventional strikes and Vikrant’s air superiority create a credible threat of overwhelming retaliation if Pakistan escalates tensions. Posts on X after Vikrant’s deployment noted Pakistan’s unease, with Islamabad conducting missile tests in the Arabian Sea as a show of defiance. Yet, these tests underscore Pakistan’s limited ability to counter India’s naval edge. Economically, a blockade could devastate Pakistan, while diplomatically, India’s naval presence signals to China, Pakistan’s ally, that New Delhi controls the Indian Ocean Region.

Risks remain. Pakistan’s C-802A and SMASH missiles could threaten Vikrant, though its defences mitigate this. Pakistan’s future submarine upgrades with Air Independent Propulsion (AIP) may narrow the gap, but India’s plan to retrofit Kalvari submarines with indigenous AIP by late 2025 will maintain its lead. X users have raised concerns about Vikrant’s vulnerability, but its escorts and mobility reduce risks.

In conclusion, while Kalvari-class submarines do not carry nuclear warheads, their conventional capabilities, paired with INS Vikrant’s dominance, create a robust deterrent against Pakistan. By threatening economic lifelines, controlling the seas, and projecting power, India ensures Pakistan hesitates to provoke further. This naval strategy, rooted in stealth, precision, and overwhelming force, proves that deterrence need not rely on nuclear might—it thrives on strategic dominance.

Beneath the waves, above the seas: Is India’s Kalvari-Vikrant duo Pakistan’s worst nightmare?

In an era where national security hinges on advanced military technology, missile defence systems play a vital role in protecting nations from aerial threats such as ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, aircraft, and drones. India and Pakistan, both nuclear-armed neighbors with a history of tensions, have prioritised the development and acquisition of robust missile defence systems to safeguard their territories.

This article provides a detailed explanation of the missile defence systems of India and Pakistan in simple Indian English, focusing on their features, capabilities, target engagement capacities, likely deployment locations, and recent developments. Special emphasis is given to India’s S-400 system and the number of targets each system can engage simultaneously.

India’s Missile Defence Systems: A Multi-Layered Fortress

India has built a sophisticated missile defence architecture to counter threats from both Pakistan and China. Its systems combine indigenous technology with advanced foreign acquisitions, creating a multi-layered shield capable of intercepting a wide range of threats. Below is a detailed breakdown of India’s key missile defence systems, including their target engagement capabilities.

1. S-400 Triumf (400 km Range)

India signed a $5.43 billion deal with Russia in 2018 to acquire five S-400 regiments, with deliveries beginning in 2021. The S-400 Triumf is a long-range surface-to-air missile (SAM) system designed to engage aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at ranges up to 400 km and altitudes up to 30 km. It uses four missile types—40N6 (400 km), 48N6E3 (250 km), 9M96E2 (120 km), and 9M96E (40 km)—to tackle different threats. The system’s 92N6E Grave Stone multi-function AESA (Active Electronically Scanned Array) radar can track up to 300 targets simultaneously and engage up to 36 targets at once with up to 72 missiles (two per target for redundancy). It can counter stealth aircraft, hypersonic missiles traveling at Mach 14, and low-flying threats, making it one of the world’s most advanced air defence systems.

Features: 360-degree coverage, resistance to electronic jamming, high accuracy, and rapid deployment. The S-400’s command-and-control system integrates with India’s Integrated Air Command and Control System (IACCS) for real-time coordination.

Target Engagement: Tracks 300 targets and engages 36 simultaneously, with a hit probability of 90–95 per cent for missiles and 80–90% for aircraft.

Likely Placement: Deployed along the Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab, and along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh. Strategic cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru are also protected to safeguard political and economic hubs.

Recent Developments: In July 2024, India conducted its first S-400 exercise, named Sudarshan, achieving an 80% success rate in simulated intercepts. By mid-2025, all five regiments are expected to be fully operational.

2. Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) System

India’s indigenous BMD program, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is a two-tiered system to intercept ballistic missiles.

i) Prithvi Air Defence (PAD)/Prithvi Defence Vehicle (PDV): Designed for exo-atmospheric intercepts at 50–180 km altitude, it can neutralize missiles with a range of up to 2,000 km. The PDV uses an Imaging Infrared (IIR) seeker for precision targeting.

ii) Advanced Air Defence (AAD): For endo-atmospheric intercepts at 20–40 km altitude, it targets missiles at lower heights.

The system’s Swordfish Long-Range Tracking Radar (LRTR) can track up to 200 targets, while the Mission Control Centre (MCC) can engage up to 8–10 targets simultaneously using multiple interceptors.

Features: High precision, two-layered protection, and the ability to counter nuclear-capable missiles. Phase 1 is operational, while Phase 2 aims to tackle missiles with a 5,000 km range, like Pakistan’s Shaheen-III.

Target Engagement: Tracks 200 targets and engages 8–10 simultaneously, with a 90% single-shot kill probability.

Likely Placement: Deployed around New Delhi and Mumbai, with plans to extend coverage to Hyderabad, Chennai, and Kolkata.

Recent Developments: Phase-II BMD was tested in 2023, enhancing capabilities against hypersonic and MIRV (Multiple Independently Targetable Reentry Vehicle) threats.

Comparing India and Pakistan’s Systems

India’s missile defence systems are superior in range, diversity, and technological sophistication. The S-400’s ability to engage 36 targets simultaneously far surpasses the HQ-9/P’s 6–12 target capacity, and India’s BMD system provides unique protection against ballistic missiles, which Pakistan lacks. India’s indigenous systems like Akash and QRSAM, combined with foreign collaborations (Russia, Israel), ensure long-term sustainability, while Pakistan’s reliance on Chinese technology limits its innovation. India’s layered approach—covering long, medium, and short ranges—gives it a strategic edge, particularly against Pakistan’s subsonic cruise missiles (Babur) and tactical nuclear missiles (Nasr).

Pakistan’s systems, while less advanced, are cost-effective and tailored to counter India’s air superiority. The HQ-9/P and HQ-16FE provide credible deterrence against Indian aircraft, but their shorter ranges and less advanced radars struggle against India’s standoff weapons like BrahMos and Rafale-Meteor. Pakistan’s development of MIRV-capable missiles like Ababeel aims to challenge India’s BMD, but its air defence remains vulnerable to India’s hypersonic and long-range missiles.

Strategic Implications and Future Outlook

India’s missile defence systems are designed to counter threats from both Pakistan and China, reflecting its broader geopolitical ambitions. Deployments along the LoC and LAC protect against immediate threats, while urban deployments safeguard economic and political hubs. Pakistan’s systems focus on defending key cities and military assets from India’s air and missile capabilities, but its technological and economic constraints limit its scalability. Recent developments, such as India’s hypersonic missile tests and Pakistan’s Fatah-II rocket system, underscore the ongoing arms race.

India’s focus on self-reliance through programs like Make in India ensures long-term resilience, while Pakistan’s dependence on foreign technology poses challenges. Both nations must prioritize confidence-building measures to avoid escalations, as seen in the 2022 BrahMos incident, where an accidental missile landing in Pakistan heightened tensions.

In conclusion, India’s missile defence systems, led by the S-400’s unmatched target engagement capabilities, provide a significant strategic advantage over Pakistan. While Pakistan is modernizing its defences with systems like the HQ-9/P, it faces challenges in matching India’s technological edge. Maintaining strategic stability in South Asia remains critical as both nations continue to enhance their missile defence capabilities.

Missile lockdown: The defence chessboard of India and Pakistan

India has taken a bold step forward by signing a Rs 63,000 crore deal with France on April 28, 2025, for 26 Rafale Marine (M) fighter jets. Inked in Delhi, this agreement strengthens the Indian Navy’s airpower at a time when tensions with Pakistan are high after the tragic Pahalgam terror attack.

The Rafale M jets, designed for operations on INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, will replace the outdated MiG-29K fleet, giving India a massive edge in maritime and aerial warfare. The Indian Air Force already operates 36 Rafale jets, a mix of single-seat and twin-seat variants, guarding our skies against Pakistan and China. But has the government’s delay in finalising this naval deal left us exposed? And what could have been different if these jets were already in our hands? Let’s explore why this deal is a proud moment for India and how it reshapes our defence strategy.

The Rafale M is a top-tier fighter jet, a 4.5-generation, omni-role aircraft built for air dominance, precision strikes, and maritime missions. Armed with cutting-edge weapons like Meteor long-range missiles, Exocet anti-ship missiles, and SCALP cruise missiles, it can strike deep into enemy territory with unmatched accuracy. Designed for Short Take-Off But Arrested Recovery (STOBAR) operations, the Rafale M has reinforced landing gear and arrestor hooks, making it ideal for INS Vikrant. Compared to Pakistan’s Chinese-made J-10 and J-15 jets, the Rafale M is far superior in technology and firepower. In a conflict with Pakistan, these jets could rule the skies and even target key locations like Karachi in minutes, as defence experts suggest. This makes them a powerful deterrent against Pakistan’s provocations, especially after the Pahalgam attack that killed 28 people. The Rafale M’s versatility ensures India is ready to tackle threats on land or at sea.

The Rafale family, developed by Dassault Aviation, comes in three main variants: Rafale C (single-seat for air forces), Rafale B (twin-seat for air forces), and Rafale M (single-seat for naval operations). The Rafale C and B are built for land-based missions, excelling in air-to-air combat and ground strikes, while the Rafale M is tailored for carrier-based operations with features like a stronger undercarriage and corrosion resistance for sea missions. India operates two variants for the Air Force: 26 single-seat Rafale C jets and 10 twin-seat Rafale B jets, acquired in 2016 for Rs 59,000 crore. These jets, stationed at Ambala (facing Pakistan) and Hasimara (facing China), are customised with India-specific enhancements like helmet-mounted displays and cold-weather capabilities for Himalayan operations. The 26 Rafale M jets for the Navy will complement the IAF’s fleet, creating a unified Rafale ecosystem that shares maintenance and logistics, boosting efficiency and cutting costs.

The timing of the Rafale M deal is crucial. Pakistan’s support for terrorism, combined with its growing military ties with China, keeps India on high alert. China’s expanding naval presence in the Indian Ocean, with three operational aircraft carriers, adds another challenge. The Rafale M jets will not only counter Pakistan’s provocations but also show China that India is serious about protecting its maritime interests. The IAF’s 36 Rafale jets already provide a strong defence against both neighbours, and the Navy’s Rafale M jets will extend this strength to the seas. This deal is a proud testament to India’s commitment to modernising its military and standing tall against its adversaries. By integrating the Rafale M with the IAF’s single-seat and twin-seat Rafale jets, India is building a formidable force that can operate seamlessly across air and naval domains.

But has the government made a mistake by delaying this deal? The Rafale M acquisition process began in 2017 under the Multi-Role Carrier Borne Fighter program, with trials in Goa comparing the Rafale M to Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet. The Navy chose the Rafale M for its technical superiority and compatibility with the IAF’s Rafale fleet. However, bureaucratic hurdles and tough price negotiations slowed things down. The Cabinet Committee on Security approved the deal on April 9, 2025, but it took years to reach this point. Critics argue that faster action could have had these jets operational by now, addressing the Navy’s shortage of carrier-based fighters. The MiG-29K fleet, troubled by technical issues and crashes, has left a gap in our naval airpower. A quicker deal could have ensured India was better prepared for the current tensions with Pakistan.

Imagine if the Rafale M jets were already in service. With 26 jets deployed on INS Vikrant and INS Vikramaditya, alongside the IAF’s 36 single-seat and twin-seat Rafale jets, India’s air and naval power would be unmatched in the region. After the Pahalgam attack, these jets could have patrolled the Arabian Sea, conducted reconnaissance, and responded swiftly to any aggression. Their ability to carry nuclear-capable weapons would have sent a strong message to Pakistan, discouraging any misadventure. The combined might of all Rafale variants would have boosted the morale of our forces and the nation, showing India’s readiness to defend itself. A fully operational Rafale fleet could have made Pakistan think twice before escalating tensions, potentially preventing further provocations.

Despite the delay, the government deserves credit for securing this deal at a reduced cost through tough negotiations. The Rs 63,000 crore package includes weapons, simulators, training, and logistics support. Aligned with “Make in India,” Dassault may establish a final assembly line in India for future orders, creating jobs and boosting defense manufacturing. The government’s push to finalise the deal after the Pahalgam attack shows its focus on national security. While the first Rafale M jets won’t arrive until late 2028, with full delivery by 2031, their strategic impact will be massive. The combination of single-seat, twin-seat, and naval Rafale jets ensures India’s military is future-ready.

In conclusion, the Rafale M deal is a proud milestone, strengthening India’s Navy and complementing the IAF’s 36 Rafale jets. The delay was a setback, but the government’s strategic vision has secured a cost-effective deal that enhances our defense capabilities. With 62 Rafale jets across three variants, India is building a powerful force to counter Pakistan and China. This deal is not just about 26 naval jets; it’s about India’s resolve to rise as a global power, protecting its people and sovereignty. Jai Hind!

Jai Hind! Unblinking Guardians: Can ISRO's Satellite Revolution Prevent Another Pahalgam?

The Indus Waters Treaty, a rare thread of peace between India and Pakistan since 1960, now hangs by a thread. On April 23, 2025, India hit pause on this historic agreement, blaming Pakistan for fueling terrorism, like the recent Pahalgam attack in Kashmir that left blood on the streets. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to suspend water sharing is no small matter—it’s a thunderbolt aimed at Pakistan’s lifeline. The Indus River system is Pakistan’s backbone, feeding its farms, cities, and power plants. This move could choke Pakistan’s economy, spark unrest, and push the two neighbours closer to a dangerous edge. But for India, it’s a loud message: terrorism has a price, and Pakistan must pay it.

The Indus River, Pakistan’s lifeblood, is now a weapon in India’s hands after Prime Minister Narendra Modi suspended the Indus Waters Treaty on April 23, 2025, citing Pakistan’s alleged role in the Pahalgam attack. The Indus system, with its six key tributaries—Indus, Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej—sustains 80% of Pakistan’s farmland, cities like Karachi and Lahore, and hydropower plants like Tarbela. Under the 1960 treaty, India controls the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej), contributing about 20% of the system’s flow, while Pakistan relies on the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab), which carry roughly 80% of the water. India’s move to halt this flow could starve Pakistan’s agriculture, dry up urban water supplies, and cripple its energy sector, pushing its fragile economy to the brink. Modi’s old words—“Blood and water cannot flow together”—echo loudly today, signalling that Pakistan’s alleged terrorism has triggered a devastating retaliation, threatening millions with food and water scarcity.

Then, there’s the water crisis waiting to hit Pakistan’s cities. Big names like Karachi, Lahore, and Multan lean on the Indus for drinking water. If India tightens the tap, these cities could go thirsty. Imagine taps running dry in homes, schools, and hospitals. Pakistan is already one of the world’s most water-stressed nations, and this could tip it over the edge. Frustrated people might take to the streets, and unrest could flare up fast. Urban Pakistan, already grappling with power cuts and inflation, might see chaos if water becomes a luxury. India’s move is a stark warning: no water, no peace.

Pakistan’s energy sector is in for a shock too. Hydropower plants like Tarbela and Mangla, powered by the Indus and Jhelum rivers, keep the country’s lights on. Less water means less electricity, which could cripple industries and homes. Factories might shut down, jobs could vanish, and power bills could skyrocket as Pakistan scrambles for costly alternatives like oil or gas. The economy, already wobbling with debt and inflation, might take a nosedive. For a country where 25% of GDP comes from the Indus system, this is a body blow. India knows this and is turning the screws.

The fallout doesn’t stop there. Pakistan is gearing up to fight back, likely dragging the World Bank or international courts into this mess. It’s calling India’s bluff, denying any role in the Pahalgam attack and painting itself as the victim. But diplomacy won’t fix the immediate pain. Tensions are soaring—India’s already banned Pakistani nationals from special visas and kicked out military advisers. If Pakistan doesn’t back down on what India calls “cross-border terrorism,” this could spiral into something bigger.
What’s next? Pakistan’s 237 million people, especially the poorest, will bear the brunt. Food insecurity, water scarcity, and power cuts could spark a humanitarian crisis.
This is Modi’s gambit, and it’s a risky one. For Pakistan, it’s a moment of truth. Will it change course, or will it let its people pay the price for pride? 'Blood stops the flow': Modi's words crush Pakistan’s lifeline

On April 22, 2025, terror returned to the Kashmir Valley. In Baisaran, near Pahalgam, 27 innocent lives were taken—including Indian tourists, locals, and foreigners. The attack was carried out by The Resistance Front (TRF), a group backed by Pakistan’s Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).

This was no random incident. It happened exactly one day after U.S. Vice President JD Vance landed in India for a four-day visit with his family. The timing was planned. Militant groups have long used such moments to grab global headlines and push their agenda.

This isn’t new. In 2000, 36 Sikh villagers were killed in the Chittisinghpora massacre—just as President Bill Clinton was visiting India. In 2002, the Kaluchak attack during another US visit shook the nation. Now, in 2025, Pahalgam has been added to this grim list.

What makes this attack worse is the manner in which it was done. Survivors said the terrorists asked victims to recite Islamic verses—those who couldn’t were shot. The goal was clear: to spread fear, target Hindus, kill tourism, and force international attention on Kashmir.

This attack came when tourism in Kashmir was booming—over 35 lakh tourists in 2024, including 43,000 foreigners. Killing visitors was meant to crush this recovery.

America responded quickly. President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Vice President Vance said he and his wife Usha were praying for the victims. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said America “stands with India.” But now, America must do more than speak.

What the US must do:

1. Strengthen Counter-Terror Ties:

LeT is the same group behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks. India and the U.S. must now boost intelligence sharing, train special units together, and give India access to high-end surveillance and anti-terror tools. Stopping these attacks before they happen should be the goal.

2. Confront Pakistan’s Role Openly:

The TRF operates from Pakistan. Just last week, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir called Kashmir their “jugular vein”. This is not diplomacy—it’s a threat. The ISI has long backed terror groups. America must finally act—cut aid unless Pakistan shows real action against LeT and TRF.

What the US must do: 1. Strengthen Counter-Terror Ties: LeT is the same group behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks. India and the U.S. must now boost intelligence sharing, train special units together, and give India access to high-end surveillance and anti-terror tools. Stopping these attacks before they happen should be the goal. 2. Confront Pakistan’s Role Openly: The TRF operates from Pakistan. Just last week, Pakistan Army Chief Asim Munir called Kashmir their “jugular vein”. This is not diplomacy—it’s a threat. The ISI has long backed terror groups. America must finally act—cut aid unless Pakistan shows real action against LeT and TRF. The term "jugular vein" refers to the major blood veins in the neck that carry blood from the head to the heart. These veins are very important for survival—if they are damaged, it can be life-threatening. When used in speeches or politics (like calling Kashmir Pakistan’s "jugular vein"), it is a metaphor that means something extremely vital or essential, like a lifeline. Sanction Pakistan’s generals and ISI handlers. Publicly name them. Stop treating Pakistan as a confused ally—it’s time to call it what it is when it shelters terrorists. 3. 'Blood in the Valley, silence from Islamabad: A test for US-India ties'

India’s space program has long stood as a symbol of self-reliance, innovation, and cost-efficiency. But when it comes to rocket materials—especially those used in the most heat-intensive parts—dependence on foreign imports has often remained a necessity. A shining example is the nozzle divergent of the PSLV’s fourth stage, which has, until recently, relied on imported Columbium (C103), a rare and expensive material.

That is now changing. In a major move toward Atmanirbhar Bharat, ISRO scientists have successfully tested a homegrown alternative—Stellite (KC20WN)—to replace Columbium. This cobalt-based alloy, enriched with elements like Chromium, Nickel, Tungsten, and Iron, has passed all its tests, including a final long-duration hot test on April 8, 2025, at ISRO’s Propulsion Complex in Mahendragiri. The result? A 665-second success and a potential 90% cost reduction.

What is the Nozzle Divergent—and Why Does It Matter?

In simple terms, the nozzle divergent is the flared end of a rocket engine where exhaust gases are expelled. It plays a key role in controlling the direction and speed of the rocket’s thrust. But it also bears the brunt of extreme heat—making the choice of material absolutely critical.

Materials used in this part must not only survive but perform reliably at scorching temperatures that can go beyond 1100°C. Until now, the go-to material for ISRO’s PSLV fourth stage was Columbium (C103), a heat-resistant metal that is not available in India and must be imported—making it both costly and geopolitically risky.

Why Stellite? And What Makes It Special?

Stellite (KC20WN) isn’t just another substitute—it’s a strategic upgrade. This cobalt-based alloy is known for retaining strength even at very high temperatures, making it ideal for demanding aerospace use. It also offers good corrosion resistance, wear resistance, and long-term durability—key features when you’re dealing with rocket engines that have no room for error.

Most importantly, it’s available and manufacturable within India. That means greater control over quality, reduced costs, and better supply security—all without compromising on performance.

ISRO’s Path to Qualification

Replacing such a critical component is never a plug-and-play task. It demands months of design tweaks, simulations, and real-world tests. ISRO conducted a series of hot tests on this new nozzle hardware. Two units were tested in three trials during the first phase. Then, on April 8, the final long-duration hot test was completed—lasting over 11 minutes.

This final test was the deal-sealer. The new nozzle withstood the intense thermal and mechanical stress, proving it could perform just as well—or better—than its imported counterpart.

What makes this achievement more than just a technical milestone is its deeper meaning. India is not only reducing its dependence on expensive foreign materials, but also building a stronger domestic supply chain. This not only boosts national confidence, but also ensures that future space missions are more sustainable and less vulnerable to global supply disruptions.

From launch vehicles to lunar missions, materials matter. And when these materials are sourced, tested, and perfected in India, the ripple effect touches everything—from reduced launch costs to greater export potential.

The US-China trade war, now raging with 145 per cent US tariffs on Chinese goods and 125 per cent retaliatory tariffs from China as of April 2025, is sending shockwaves through the global economy. This escalating conflict, described as a “monumental split” by The New York Times, is not just a tussle between two superpowers—it’s a crisis that threatens to reshape trade, prices, and growth worldwide. For India, caught in the crossfire with its massive trade ties to both nations, this war brings both golden opportunities and daunting challenges. As an Indian, I see this as a moment for us to navigate carefully, balancing ambition with caution.

The global economy is reeling from this trade war. The US tariffs, which CNBC reports as effectively 145 per cent on Chinese imports, and China’s 125 per cent counter-tariffs, are making goods costlier. From electronics to raw materials, prices are climbing, stoking inflation fears. Reuters notes that consumer inflation expectations in the US have hit a 40-year high, with fears of “tarifflation” pushing prices up further. Supply chains, heavily dependent on China—the world’s factory—are in chaos. Shortages and delays are looming, as CNN Business warns, disrupting everything from car manufacturing to smartphone production. Financial markets are jittery too. India Today reports a $180 billion wipeout in Indian stocks in early 2025, reflecting global investor panic. If this continues, economists warn of a possible recession, with the IMF flagging a potential 0.5 per cent hit to global GDP, translating to billions in lost output.

India, with its US$118.40 billion trade with China in FY24 (IBEF), feels the heat acutely. As China’s top trading partner, surpassing even the US (Trading Economics), India relies heavily on Chinese imports—US$117.68 billion worth in 2023 alone. These include critical components for electronics, pharmaceuticals, and machinery. With tariffs driving up costs, Indian businesses and consumers could face higher prices. For instance, smartphones and medicines, heavily dependent on Chinese parts, may become pricier, as India Today points out. Rising oil prices, spurred by trade tensions, could further inflate India’s import bill, adding to inflation woes. India warns that this could weaken demand for Indian goods, especially in labour-intensive sectors like textiles and gems, already hit by global slowdowns.

Yet, there’s a silver lining. The trade war is pushing companies to rethink their supply chains, and India stands to gain. The Tribune highlights how firms like Apple and Tesla are shifting manufacturing to India, drawn by its large workforce and growing infrastructure. This could boost jobs and foreign investment, aligning with the “Make in India” vision. Wright Research notes that India’s electronics sector, especially telecom equipment like iPhones, has already seen a tenfold rise in US import share since 2017. If India secures trade deals with the US, as CNBC suggests, it could replace Chinese goods in American markets, boosting exports. China’s restrictions on US markets may also redirect its exports to India, offering cheaper goods for Indian importers, per Wright Research.

But seizing these opportunities isn’t easy. India’s exporters, particularly in metals, are at risk. Wright Research reports a 5.6 per cent plunge in the Nifty Metal Index in just three trading sessions in 2025, a sign of global trade contraction. India Today recalls how past trade wars hurt Indian exporters, and this round could be worse. Infrastructure bottlenecks and red tape, as The New York Times notes, hinder India’s ability to fully replace China as a manufacturing hub. Geopolitically, India must tread carefully. The US is a key ally in security and technology, but Indian Express quotes Chinese calls for India to stand against US “tariff abuses.” Balancing these ties while protecting trade interests is a tightrope walk, as The Tribune emphasizes.

So, what should India do? First, it must fast-track reforms to attract foreign investment. Easing business regulations and improving infrastructure, as CNBC suggests, could make India a magnet for companies fleeing China. Second, boosting domestic manufacturing is crucial to cut reliance on Chinese imports. The “Make in India” push needs more momentum, with incentives for local production in electronics and pharmaceuticals. Third, India should ramp up diplomatic efforts. The Tribune notes ongoing talks with the US for a trade deal by autumn 2025, aiming for $500 billion in two-way trade by 2030. Exploring deals with other nations, like the EU or Vietnam, could diversify trade and cushion global shocks.

This trade war is a wake-up call for India. The global economy faces turbulent times, with inflation, supply chain woes, and recession risks looming large. India, with its strategic position, can turn this crisis into a chance to shine as a manufacturing and trade hub. But it must act swiftly—streamlining policies, strengthening industries, and navigating geopolitics with finesse. As Reuters warns, the world is watching a trade war that could redefine economic power. For India, the choice is clear: adapt and thrive, or risk being swept away by the storm.

A trade war’s ripple effect: How the US-China tariff clash shakes the world and India

India has recently decided to buy 26 Rafale-M (Rafale-Marine) fighter jets from France, spending about ₹63,000 crores. This has raised questions—why order exactly 26 jets? Why not 25 or 30? The answer lies in careful planning, keeping in mind India’s defense needs, aircraft carrier requirements, and future goals.

Why the Navy Needs New Jets

The Indian Navy relies on MiG-29K fighter jets to operate from its two aircraft carriers—INS Vikramaditya and INS Vikrant. A total of 45 of these jets were purchased between 2004 and 2010. However, over the years, they have faced frequent technical issues and some operational losses, bringing the active fleet down to around 40. Of these, only 15 per cent to 47 per cent are typically operational at any given time due to ongoing maintenance and serviceability challenges. This has created an urgent need for more reliable and advanced aircraft to ensure the Navy remains combat-ready at sea.

That’s where the Rafale-M comes in—the naval version of the French-made Rafale fighter jet. It is modern, dependable, and already familiar to India, as the Air Force operates 36 Rafale jets. Designed specifically for aircraft carrier operations, the Rafale-M is well-suited for sea-based missions, making it a smart and timely choice for the Indian Navy.

Rafale-M vs Rafale-C: What's the Difference?

The Rafale-M is designed for carrier-based use. It has a stronger landing gear for catapult launches and deck landings, foldable wings to save space on the ship, and extra protection against saltwater corrosion. The Rafale-C, which is used by the Air Force, doesn’t have these features but both jets share the same core systems like radar, weapons, and controls.

Because both versions are similar in their electronics and design, pilot training and jet maintenance become easier. The Navy and Air Force can use the same facilities and systems to support both types of Rafales, saving time and money.

India’s Current Rafale Fleet

India's Air Force currently has 36 Rafale jets, split between two bases—Ambala and Hashimara. Out of these, 28 are single-seater Rafale-C jets meant for combat, and 8 are twin-seater Rafale-B jets used mainly for training and some missions. This mix ensures that pilots are well-trained while the combat fleet stays mission-ready.

So, Why 26 Jets?

The number 26 is not random. INS Vikrant, India's newest aircraft carrier launched in 2022, can carry exactly 26 fighter jets. So, buying 26 Rafale-Ms perfectly fits its full capacity. Of these, 22 will be single-seater combat jets, and 4 will be twin-seater jets for training purposes.

If India bought only 25, one spot on the carrier would go unused. If it ordered 30, there would be more jets than the carrier can hold, creating problems in parking, maintenance, and budgeting. So, 26 is the ideal number—no more, no less.

Why This Matters Strategically

This deal is more than just about replacing old jets. It is a smart move to make India’s Navy stronger. Now that India has two aircraft carriers, it needs advanced jets to match. The Rafale-M will help India protect its interests in the Indian Ocean and respond quickly to any threats in the region.

Also, this deal brings India and France closer in defense cooperation. France has already helped India by supplying Scorpene submarines. This new jet deal continues that strong partnership. The agreement also ensures that India will receive jets customized to its specific needs, including special weapons and electronic systems.

A Temporary Step Toward a Self-Made Fighter Jet

While the Rafale-M fills today’s needs, India is also working on building its own carrier-based fighter jet, called the Twin Engine Deck-Based Fighter (TEDBF). This jet is expected to be ready by 2035–2038. Until then, Rafale-M will be the backbone of India’s naval fighter fleet.

In Summary

India’s decision to buy 26 Rafale-M jets is a smart, well-planned step. It matches the exact needs of INS Vikrant, ensures better performance at sea, and keeps costs under control. This deal helps India modernize its Navy and strengthens ties with France. And as India continues to grow stronger in the Indian Ocean region, these Rafale-M jets will be key players in protecting the nation.

This jet is expected to be ready by 2035–2038. Until then, Rafale-M will be the backbone of India’s naval fighter fleet. In Summary India’s decision to buy 26 Rafale-M jets is a smart, well-planned step.

Donald Trump, the US President, has shaken the world with his new tariff plans. Tariffs are taxes on goods coming into a country, and Trump wants to put big ones on imports from places like China, India, and Europe. Markets are crashing, and people are talking about a “Black Monday” like in 1987, when stocks fell badly in one day. Why is this happening? Let me break it down into five simple points so everyone can understand why fear is spreading. 1. Tariffs Are Making Things Costly Trump’s tariffs mean goods from other countries will cost more in the US. For example, if India sends clothes or steel, the US will add extra tax. This makes prices go up for Americans. When things get expensive, people buy less. Businesses suffer, and their stock prices fall. This is already happening—US markets lost $5 trillion in just two days! Higher prices can also push inflation, which scares investors even more. 2. Other Countries Are Fighting Back When Trump puts tariffs on countries like China, they don’t sit quietly. China said it will put 34% tariffs on US goods. India might do something similar. This tit-for-tat is like a trade war. In 1987, global uncertainty helped cause the crash. Today, this back-and-forth is making markets nervous again. No one knows how bad it will get, and that fear is causing panic selling. 3. Global Markets Are Connected The world is not like it was 50 years ago. Today, if the US market falls, India, Japan, and Europe feel it too. On Friday, the US Dow Jones dropped 2,231 points. On Monday, India’s Sensex fell 3,100 points! In 1987, a big crash in the US spread fast. Now, with Trump’s tariffs hitting everyone, markets everywhere are tumbling together. It’s like a chain reaction no one can stop. 4. Investors Are Losing Confidence People who put money in stocks want to feel safe. But Trump’s sudden tariff moves are making them worried. Experts like Jim Cramer say this could be as bad as 1987, when the Dow fell 22.6% in one day. Back then, panic selling and uncertainty crashed the market. Today, investors see tariffs hurting trade and growth, so they’re pulling out money fast. When confidence goes, markets fall hard. 5. No One Knows What Trump Will Do Next Trump says tariffs are “medicine” and countries will make deals with him. But he’s not backing down, even as markets bleed. In 1987, unclear signals and surprises made things worse. Now, Trump’s tough talk—like no talks unless countries “pay”—is keeping everyone guessing. Will he stop? Will he push more tariffs? This confusion is making the fear bigger, just like in 1987. Final Thoughts Trump’s tariffs are shaking the world because they’re raising costs, starting trade wars, hitting connected markets, breaking trust, and keeping us in the dark. Black Monday in 1987 was a shock, and people worry Monday, April 7, 2025, could be another. India and the world need to watch closely. Trade keeps us growing, but these tariffs could pull us back. Let’s hope leaders find a way out before it’s too late.

Opinion: Why Trump’s tariffs are scaring the world like 1987

The chances of a satellite falling from space and hitting you are almost zero. It's extremely unlikely and not something to worry about.

Even though the number of satellites in space has gone up sharply in recent years, today’s satellites are designed to be much safer when they return to Earth. Most of them are built using lightweight materials that burn up easily when re-entering the atmosphere. They’re also programmed to fall in a controlled way, usually aiming for empty parts of the ocean or remote land areas.

That said, a small amount of space junk does still make it to the ground. For example, leftover parts from China’s Long March rockets have fallen back to Earth recently. But these are rare cases.

NASA reports that over the past 50 years, an average of just one piece of space debris falls to Earth each day. So far, no one has been seriously injured or killed by any of it.

To put things into perspective, hearing about one piece of falling space junk each day might sound alarming. But consider this: according to the BBC, at least three small non-commercial plane crashes happen daily. And yet, accidents where someone is actually hit by a falling plane are incredibly rare.

Planes are considered more dangerous because they usually remain mostly intact during a crash and often still carry fuel, which can make the impact more severe. On the other hand, most space debris is quite small—just bits of metal or carbon fibre—and burns up in the atmosphere before reaching the ground.

Also, the height from which space debris falls doesn’t really affect how fast it hits the Earth. That’s because it quickly reaches its maximum falling speed—called terminal velocity—well before landing. So whether it drops from 300 km (around 186 miles) or just 10 km (about 6 miles), it hits the ground at nearly the same speed.

What is Terminal Velocity?

Terminal velocity is the fastest speed something can reach when it’s falling through air. At first, gravity pulls the object down and it gets faster. But soon, air pushes back. When the upward force of air resistance equals the downward pull of gravity, the object stops speeding up and falls at a steady speed—this is terminal velocity.

Example: Think of a skydiver. When they first jump, they fall faster and faster. But after a while, air resistance balances out gravity, and they start falling at a steady speed. That’s terminal velocity. It’s the reason skydivers don’t keep accelerating endlessly.

Now, back to falling space debris. Spacecraft fly across a much wider and more even area of Earth compared to planes, which usually fly over crowded towns and cities. To show how little space people actually take up—if everyone in the world stood spaced apart in open areas (like how satellites are spread in orbit), they would only cover about 0.0002 per cent of the Earth’s surface.

So even if every bit of space junk falling from the sky were deadly, it would still miss people 99.9998per cent of the time. Statistically, this means it might cause just one death every 1,300 years.

Bottom line? The chances of being hit by space debris are so low that you’re much more likely to stumble while walking than ever be hurt by something falling from space.

Discover why the risk of being hit by space debris is minimal, despite daily incidents of space junk falling to Earth, and why it shouldn't be a major concern.

The chances of a satellite falling from space and hitting you are almost zero. It's extremely unlikely and not something to worry about. Even though the number of satellites in space has gone up sharply in recent years, today’s satellites are designed to be much safer when they return to Earth.
