Heavy rains have caused a significant rise in the number of leptospirosis cases in the past one week in India’s financial capital city Mumbai.

According to the data by Mumbai Civic Body, BMC, there has been a 138 per cent rise in the number of leptospirosis cases this year.

The city has recorded 249 cases in the month of July. Of which 145 have been reported from July 17-23 alone. This means that 20 people were diagnosed everyday in last one week.

Leptospirosis cases in 2022 and 2021 were 286 and 224 respectively, and this year in June and July, the city reported 346 cases.

<h2>What is Leptospirosis?</h2>

Leptospirosis is a common infection during monsoon, especially in areas prone to flooding and waterlogging; it is caused by a bacteria called spirochete.

The bacteria usually enter the host body through cuts and abrasions in the skin, sometimes they enter&nbsp;the body through the ingestion of floodwater through the mouth or nose.

<h2>BMC shares precautionary&nbsp;measures</h2>

The BMC has issued a warning regarding the risk of leptospirosis for individuals with open wounds who have been exposed to rainwater.

Doctors say, it usually takes five to 14 days after exposure to contaminated sources with an abrupt onset of symptoms like pain in the muscles, eye pain and headaches, followed by high fever and cold.

“We advise people to take precautionary measures and seek medical help if they develop any symptoms. If they have waded through stagnant water, consult the doctor and start prophylactic treatment within 24 to 72 hours,” says Dr Daksha Shah, executive health officer, BMC.

The officials have also increased testing and surveillance. BMC has been conducting door-to-door surveys.

Between July 1 and 23, around 1.5 million houses were surveyed in which around 8,198 people were treated for fever, and 87,985 were given prophylaxis for leptospirosis.

Officials say it is not a life-threatening disease, but taking precaution is a must as the cases are rising in the city.

ACKO, India’s tech-first insurance company, released&nbsp;Travel Index 2023, which&nbsp;shows that now travellers are more concerned about flexibility and convenience and are ready to spend more for the experience.&nbsp;

The report surveyed 1,000 respondents across seven major Indian cities between the ages of 24 and 45 and identified key patterns of travel consideration among Indians.&nbsp;

The survey shows that 60 per cent&nbsp;of Indians are planning international trips this year. Further, around 48 per cent&nbsp;of Indians will be allocating an increased budget for their travel in the coming year and 37 per cent&nbsp;will be increasing the duration of the trip.&nbsp;

The report further highlights that approximately 71 per cent&nbsp;of respondents are ready to spend Rs 1-6 lakh on their international trips, while domestic travellers would like to spend up to Rs 1 lakh.&nbsp;

The survey also shows how Indian travellers understand the importance of travel insurance and know what to expect from a policy. 67 per cent&nbsp;of respondents say that travel insurance is mandatory while planning their trip. Only 13 per cent&nbsp;said they don’t want to take out a travel insurance policy.&nbsp;

Speaking about the survey, Brijesh Unnithan, SVP, of Embedded Insurance said, “We wanted to understand how Indians plan to travel in 2023 and how their travel preferences have changed over the past couple of years. Travellers are now more conscious about their well-being on a trip and are demanding customised insurance products that match their needs and expectations.”&nbsp;

Interestingly, the survey also highlighted the fact that 36 per cent&nbsp;of Indians want to go on a trip with their friends, 35 per cent&nbsp;with their spouse or partner and only 14 per cent&nbsp;want to take a solo trip. Lastly, four per cent&nbsp;also like to travel with their pets.&nbsp;

Indian travellers ready to spend more for the experience this year: Survey

Pollution has been a serious concern in India’s financial capital city Mumbai for almost four months now. Officials claim, for the first time, due to extensive development and construction work in the city, the quality of air has deteriorated.

City’s administration BMC says dust has become a major contributing factor to air pollution and to control this, it has decided to form ward-level task forces to implement standard operating procedures (SOPs).

To control the dust, three task forces are being appointed in each ward. There are 24 wards in the city.

“All the wards have already begun the procedure and started surprise visits too at the construction sites. They will be responsible for controlling the dust particles during the building constriction work. Through field visits, the project site will be regularly monitored for dust control. If they see a violation, then strict action will be taken including fines, warnings, and even stop work notices,” a senior official from the BMC said.

Secondly, to control pollution, road cleanliness will be monitored by the task force. The team will look after the roads which will be regularly cleaned, measures will be taken to control the dust on roads, water will be sprinkled, etc. It will also search for and locate places where garbage and other waste items are burnt, especially in open spaces.

BMC says the goal of the task force is to conduct inspections at the ward level and prepare reports based on their observations which can help to curb the pollution issue in Mumbai.

Mumbai has been more in news for air pollution compared to the national capital&nbsp;Delhi. A recent survey even ranked Mumbai as the second most polluted city globally for a week between January and 29-February 8, 2023.

BMC takes steps to curb dust in Indian financial capital Mumbai

Poor air quality for the last three months has been a cause of concern for citizens living in India’s financial capital, Mumbai. Its civic body, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has blamed construction activity as the major cause for the rising bad air quality in the city.

To suggest dust control measures, BMC has formed a seven-member committee under the chairmanship of Additional Municipal Commissioner (Western Suburbs) Sanjeev Kumar. As per the directions given by Municipal Commissioner I S Chahal, the panel shall submit a report within seven days.

“There are around 5,000 sites where construction work is going on currently. The air quality in Mumbai region including the city is currently bad due to changes in the wind speed conditions combined with dust arising from various development and construction works, which are going on a large scale. In view of this, dust is the main factor responsible for air pollution,” said a senior BMC official.

STEPS survey also showed that one in five respondents has raised levels of cholesterol — a marker of heart disease. Almost 37 per cent in the 18-69 age group have three out of six factors of heart disease.

To remain fit and healthy, doctors advise to do basic exercise and eat healthy like fruits, vegetables etc., but the survey found that 74 per cent of respondents reported no fitness related physical activity in their daily routine.

“We now have a proper health chart of people living in Mumbai. To control hypertension and diabetes, we have started screening people and putting them on treatment. Overweight and obesity are also other common issues that citizens are facing. Our survey found almost 12 per cent of respondents are obese. More women than men are obese in the city,” said Dr Daksha Shah, BMC's joint executive health officer.

On Thursday, Mumbai recorded the Air Quality Index (AQI) of 316, considered to be ‘very poor', higher than Delhi’s AQI at 263 or in the ‘poor’ category.&nbsp;

An AQI between 201 and 300 is considered *poor*, 301-400 *very poor* and 401-500 *severe*, while an AQI between zero and 50 is considered *good*, 51 and 100 *satisfactory*, and 101 and 200 *moderate.&nbsp;

According to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting and Research (SAFAR), stagnant winds, drop in temperatures, and suspended pollutants mixing with moisture in the atmosphere are causing haze across the metropolis.&nbsp;

As Mumbai AQI became worse than Delhi’s, doctors advised people to take precautionary measures like wearing masks, especially those who have respiratory illnesses, while stepping out.

In fact, Mumbai’s civic body, BMC has come up with an action plan to improve air quality.&nbsp;

All 24 administrative wards have been directed to take immediate remedial measures to deal with the rise in AQI levels. The second step is to clean road dust and sprinkle water and also identify air pollution hotspots and micro hotspots.&nbsp;

The consultants held a special meeting earlier this month with the civic body and pointed to four wards that showed a rise in AQI levels, much above 200.&nbsp;

Areas like Colaba-Churchgate, Mankhurd, Borivali, and Malad are the most affected.&nbsp;

In fact, both their families agreed to the wedding and had no objection. The groom is into the travel agency business. Solapur district is approximately 400 km from Mumbai.&nbsp;

Solapur Police has now registered a non-cognisable (NC) offence under section 494 of the Indian penal Code (IPC). The video that has gone viral on social media shows the names of the bride and the groom written at the place where the event was held.&nbsp;

In the clipping from the Jaimala (Garland) ceremony, people can be seen cheering for the twin sisters who tried to garland the groom. The twin sisters attempted to garland Atul at the same time and failed in their first attempt. Then they put the jaimala on him one by one.&nbsp;

Initial investigation done by Police stated Police officials reveal that all three of them, the twin sisters and the groom have been living together since childhood. “The girls were living with their mother after their father passed away a few days ago. During this time, Atul came close to the two young women. The two sisters reportedly decided to wed the same man as they couldn't imagine parting ways after marriage,” said Solapur police officials.&nbsp;

Police say further investigation and questioning are underway.&nbsp;

In Mumbai, this is a huge jump from the last two years. In 2019, the city saw 25&nbsp;measles&nbsp;cases and in 2020, only nine were reported the entire year. But this year, in less than two months, 233 cases are reported.

In Mumbai, there are seven hotspot areas currently - Dharavi, Govandi, Kurla, Mahim, Bandra, and Matunga reporting the maximum number of cases.

“The start of the outbreak was indicated in October when the city reported 60 cases as against a mere 25 in September this year. That is when we decided we need to start surveying slum areas which are reporting maximum cases,” said Dr Mangala Gomare, Executive Health Officer, BMC.

Surveys revealed that due to the pandemic,&nbsp;measles&nbsp;vaccination of children got affected. Close to 20,000 children missed their&nbsp;measles&nbsp;vaccine.

“Our survey report suggested that only 41% of the eligible children had taken vaccination. We have started to raise awareness in these slum areas and track the children who have missed them. We are holding vaccination camps for them too,” said Dr Gomare to WION.

The BMC has issued an advisory stating that ‘Given Measles&nbsp;outbreak in Mumbai all the citizens are appealed to vaccinate their children between 9 months to 5 years of age with&nbsp;Measles&nbsp;containing vaccine.’

To contain the spread, vaccination camps, door-to-door surveys, and awareness sessions are being held by the city administration.

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police has received Look Out Circulars (LOCs) against 56 Chinese nationals for fraudulently becoming directors of Indian companies, some of which turned out to be shell companies.

Since April this year, at least 39 cheating and forgery cases have been registered. The FIRs are registered based on the complaints lodged by the Registrar of Companies, Mumbai. According to the EOW probe, dozens of Chartered Accountants (CAs) and Company Secretaries (CSs) have been named who allegedly have helped the accused foreigners. &nbsp;

Allegations on which the EOW is probing currently&nbsp;accused CAs and CSs helped them in getting suspected shell companies registered in the names of Indian citizens,&nbsp;inducting the foreigners as directors of the companies, and transferring the entities to them for hefty charges.

EOW officials further stated that they are probing the angle if the accused Chinese nationals have opened companies with an intention of aiding and abetting the commission of any larger financial crimes in India or not.&nbsp;

Talking about the case, officials say the accused used the names of their friends and relatives as promoters. They submitted false information and documents to the registrar's office. On physical verification, all the documents that they had submitted turned out to be fake. And this is where the EOW probe started. No arrest has been made so far. &nbsp;

All accused have been booked under relevant sections of criminal breach of trust, cheating, falsification of accounts, criminal conspiracy, and under relevant sections of Company Act. &nbsp;

Officials say nothing conclusive has come so far in the investigation as questioning is going on currently. “All the CAs and CSs are being questioned currently and their statements are getting recorded. First, for us, the main reason is to find out why the accused Chinese nationals have set up shell companies in India.” &nbsp;

Central agencies like CBI and IB officials are also monitoring the case to check the progress. &nbsp;&nbsp;

This is part of a nationwide crackdown on shell companies with dummy Indian directors with Chinese connections. In April this year, the EOW of the Mumbai Police had registered 34 FIRs against 150 people, including 60 foreigners -- 40 of them from China -- for allegedly violating laws regarding the registration of new companies and for fraudulently becoming directors of Indian companies. &nbsp;

Among the 542 pilots who took part in the survey, 66 per cent said that they have dozed off during their shift hours in the cockpit.&nbsp;

The survey was conducted by the non-profit organisation Safety Matters Foundation and it included “Indian pilots flying with regional, domestic, domestic with destinations within four hours flying”.&nbsp;

“Based on their responses, it was found that about 54% of the pilots suffer from severe excessive daytime sleepiness while 41% suffer from moderate daytime sleepiness,” the survey explained.&nbsp;

Fatigue is one of the main reasons attributed to airplane accidents and the study reaffirmed the fact that pilots are not coping well with the pressure that comes with their jobs. With companies looking to work with less than adequate workforces, timings have gone up for most pilots.&nbsp;

‘Corporate support for implementing and maintaining a safety culture needs to be enhanced. There is a general agreement that adequate manpower and resources are not put into safety. The DGCA has not implemented Fatigue risk management systems (FRMS) mandatorily and as such, no rules have been drafted to manage fatigue under FRMS. The prevailing rules are prescriptive and scientific principle on which DGCA has based the regulations for flight and the duty time remain debatable,’ said Captain Amit Singh, founder, Safety Matters Foundation.&nbsp;

In India, people wearing seat belts is a rare sight. All the cars have rear seat belts (back seat belts), but we have seen very few people using them in India’s financial capital city Mumbai.

"When I am driving locally, I do not use the safety feature of the back seat belt. But when we are on the national highway, we use it sometimes but maximum times we forget to use the back seat belt", says Parth Shah, a resident of Mumbai.&nbsp;

Another Mumbai resident said she never used&nbsp;the back seat belt at all as she doesn’t find it necessary.&nbsp;

What we also observed was a lack of awareness regarding rules. As stated in Rule 138 (3) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR),&nbsp;“The driver and the person seated in the front seat or the persons occupying front facing rear seats, as the case may be, wear the seat belts while the vehicle is in motion. Failure to do so can result in a fine of Rs 1,000”.&nbsp;

According to World Health Organisation (WHO), the use of rear seat belts can prevent fatality by 25 per cent, and also prevent excess injury or death for the front seat passenger.&nbsp;

Wearing a seat belt while sitting in the rear seat can help reduce the chances of a fatal injury considerably. In case of a collision, an unbuckled passenger will be pushed forward to collide with the front seat or even the dashboard.&nbsp;

As stated in Rule 138 (3) of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), “The driver and the person seated in the front seat or the persons occupying front facing rear seats, as the case may be, wear the seat belts while the vehicle is in motion. Failure to do so can result in a fine of Rs 1,000”. According to World Health Organisation (WHO), the use of rear seat belts can prevent fatality by 25 per cent, and also prevent excess injury or death for the front seat passenger. Wearing a seat belt while sitting in the rear seat can help reduce the chances of a fatal injury considerably. In case of a collision, an unbuckled passenger will be pushed forward to collide with the front seat or even the dashboard.
