A group of protesters clashed with the police in Nepal's capital Kathmandu on Thursday (Nov 23) demanding the restoration of the monarchy that was abolished around 15 years ago.

At least 30 people, including five policemen, were injured as Nepalese riot police used batons and tear gas to disperse the protesters belonging to two different groups who were clashing with each other.

Different demonstrations were organised by two political groups against the government.

The Youth Organisation Nepal (YON) affiliated with the main Opposition Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist-Leninist) [CPN UML], demanded the ouster of the Prachanda-led present coalition government and ending corruption.

Meanwhile, the pro-monarchy Durga Prasai Group sought the restoration of the Hindu state in Nepal.

While the members of the YON staged a protest rally at the Tinkune area near the Tribhuvan International Airport, the Durga Prasai group organised the protest in the Balkhu area on the outskirts of Kathmandu.

PTI news agency, citing eyewitnesses, reported that the security personnel deployed at the venue fired a dozen tear gas shells and water cannons after the protesters tried to enter the prohibited area in Balkhu.

Traffic was severely impacted in&nbsp;dozens of areas in the capital due to the agitations organised by two opposing groups.

The two groups earlier planned to protest at Maitighar Mandala near the Prime Minister's Office and the Parliament building.

However, the government issued a month-long prohibitory order in the area, forcing them to shift their agitation venue.

"Police only tried to contain a huge anarchic crowd of protesters," Jitendra Basnet, the top official in the city administration of Kathmandu, in whose downtown area public protests are banned, told Reuters news agency.

Nepal was a monarchical state for 239 years until 2008 when a specially elected assembly abolished the system under terms of an accord that ended a Maoist insurgency, which killed 17,000 people between 1996 and 2006, and established a federal republic.

However, political instability has continued to haunt Nepal since then, with over 10 changes of government, hobbling economic development and forcing millions of young people to seek work mainly in Malaysia, South Korea and the Middle East.

Additionally, Binance also reached a settlement with the Treasury Department’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network and the Office of Foreign Assets Control.

In a statement, Treasury Department Secretary Janet Yellen said that the trading platform was used to facilitate money to terror groups like Hamas, Al Qaeda, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

Binance had also failed to report more&nbsp;than 100,000 suspicious transactions with organizations designated as terrorist groups by the US.

“The violations include failure to implement programmes to prevent and report suspicious transactions with terrorists — including Hamas' Al-Qassam Brigades, Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ), Al Qaeda, and the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).''

It accused Binance of turning a “blind eye to its legal obligations in the pursuit of profit,'' allowing ''money to flow to terrorists, cybercriminals, and child abusers through its platform.''

The Treasury Department claimed that the crypto giant also failed to prevent and report transactions with “ransomware attackers, money launderers, and other criminals,” as well as trades between users in the US and in countries sanctioned by the US government, including Iran, North Korea and Syria, as well as the Crimean peninsula, which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014.

The hospital said that it has been shoring up manpower in the paediatrics unit with senior doctors from the cardiovascular, neurology, and critical care departments, and added that it has increased the number of security guards on-site, reports Business Insider.

Around 96 kilometres southeast Tianjian Children's Hospital Director Liu Wei published a Saturday letter via the city's WeChat announcement channel, saying his staff were overwhelmed.

More than 13,171 patients had been admitted to the hospital's two campuses in the last 24 hours, Liu wrote, urging the parents to remain calm.

"Our hospital staff have been working hard," Liu wrote. "They are also children of their parents. Their children have also been having fevers."

An hospital affiliated to the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine said all paediatric department staff had to cancel their holidays, with administrative officials working in shifts for round-the-clock coordination of resources to cope with the surge, digital outlet Thepaper.cn reported.

A citizen from Beijing told Taiwanese news website FTV News, “Many, many (children) are hospitalised. They don’t cough and have no symptoms. They just have a high temperature and many develop pulmonary nodules.”

The Israeli military on Thursday (Nov 23) confirmed the arrest of the al Shifa Hospital director, saying that he is being held for questioning as it reiterated its claims that the hospital complex served as the nerve centre for Hamas militants.

Earlier, the Hamas-run Gaza health ministry said that Dr Muhammad Abu Salmiya, who heads al Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, has been detained along with "some of the medical staff”.

The Palestinian group added that it "strongly condemned" his arrest, describing it as "nothing less than despicable" and "lacking any sense of humanity and morals".

Hours later, the Israeli Defence Force confirmed his confinement in a post on social media platform X.

As the event progressed, the protesters constantly jeered and booed the centre-right politician, chanting "Shame on you," over his strong pro-Israel stance, prompting the police to remove some of them from the venue.

Kristersson later slammed the protestors on Facebook, calling them disrespectful.

Sandrine Josso, an MP for the centrist MoDem party, broke her silence on Wednesday (Nov 22) after centre-right senator, Joël Guerriau, 66, was last week arrested and charged with “administering to a person, without their knowledge, a substance that could alter their judgment or self-control in order to commit a rape or sexual assault”.

He was also charged with possession and use of substances classed as drugs.

The incident rocked the French establishment and exposed deeper malice over, what the MP said, was the “scourge” of drink-spiking in France.

In two separate interviews, Jasso said that she was “still in a state of shock” after the alleged incident last week.

Speaking to France 5 TV, the parliamentarian said that she wants to raise awareness that it can happen to anyone, regardless of their status and age.

&nbsp;“Anyone can go through what I suffered,” Josso told France 5 TV, urging the government to take action.

Josso accused the senator of giving her a glass of champagne spiked with the drug ecstasy.

A South Korean appeals court has ordered the Japanese government to compensate a group of former “comfort women”— a euphemism used to describe sex slaves for Japanese troops during the Second World War.

On Thursday (Nov 23), the Seoul High Court overturned the lower court’s order in 2021 that had dismissed the case citing "sovereign immunity"—a concept under international law whereby the court of one country has no jurisdiction over another nation.

A total of 16 women filed a plea in 2016, seeking 200 million won (US$155,000) each in compensation.

The appellate court said that the case falls under South Korea’s jurisdiction since the victims live in the country and sought compensation over the acts that are deemed “unlawful” under its civil law.

&nbsp;“It is reasonable to consider that there is a common international law which does not recognise state immunity for an illegal act … regardless of whether the act was a sovereign act,” the court said, according to Reuters news agency.

<h2>Japan says ruling 'unacceptable'&nbsp;</h2>

Reacting to the judgement, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said the order goes against international law and agreements between the two countries, calling it “extremely regrettable and absolutely unacceptable”.

“Japan once again strongly urges the Republic of Korea to immediately take appropriate measures to remedy the status of its breaches of international law,” she said.

Additionally, the Japanese government declined to be involved in the case, as well as similar lawsuits filed by other groups of South Korean women who claimed to have been forced to work in the military brothels.

The ruling exposes the fraught relations between Japan and Korea, which was once under Tokyo’s occupation during the 1910-1945 colonial period.

Adding to the list of symptoms of “space sickness”, scientists have now claimed that male astronauts returning from outer space missions might have to deal with erectile dysfunction problems.

According to a study published in The FASEB Journal, the risk of erectile dysfunction is not only present when astronauts are in space, but it might also continue for a long period even after they come back to Earth.

Among the reasons cited by the study is that astronauts while in space are exposed to high levels of galactic cosmic rays (GCR)—energetic particles that bombard Earth—as well as weightlessness, which in turn affects their sexual health.

In their study, the NASA-funded researchers on Wednesday (Nov 22) warned of a “new health risk to consider with deep space exploration”.

“While the negative impacts of galactic cosmic radiation were long-lasting, functional improvements induced by acutely targeting the redox and nitric oxide pathways in the tissues suggest that the erectile dysfunction may be treatable,” said Dr Justin La Favor, an expert in neurovascular dysfunction at Florida State University and a senior author on the study.

<h2>'Astronauts should be monitored closely'</h2>

In light of more manned missions to space being planned in the coming years, La Favor said that the sexual health of astronauts should be monitored closely upon their return from deep space missions in the future.

"Current space vehicles provide negligible protection against GCR, so there are not effective ways to protect astronauts from GCR exposure on trips to deep-space," La Favor told&nbsp;Newsweek.

"It is possible that the effects of GCR exposure could be mitigated therapeutically, but more research will be needed to establish efficacy, even in the rodent models. Our study only investigated the effects after long-term recovery. I would speculate that the effects of the galactic cosmic radiation would be more pronounced shortly after exposure, although that will need to be a topic of future investigation."
