While addressing a rally in Jalore city of poll-bound Rajasthan state, Rahul Gandhi said that had Modi not attended the match, the Indian team would have won the World Cup.

Then someone from the crowd shouted ‘panauti’ (a Hindi word for a person who brings bad luck or omen).

To which Gandhi responded, “Yeah…panauti, panauti... Our boys were easily going to win the World Cup but the 'bad omen' made us lose. The media won't point this out but people know.”

The greenhouse gas reduction pledges adopted by the countries are insufficient to attain the pre-industrial level global temperatures, the United Nations said in its report on Monday (Nov 19).

The UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP) annual Emissions Gap report said that based on existing policies and emissions-cutting efforts, the planet’s temperature could still go up to a catastrophic 2.9 degrees Celsius by 2100.

The report, which was released just ahead of crucial COP28 climate talks, warns that nations' decarbonisation plans would still see the planet heat between 2.5C and 2.9C by this century.

It also noted that 2023 would be the hottest in human history, adding that “the world is witnessing a disturbing acceleration in the number, speed and scale of broken climate records”.

“Due to the failure to stringently reduce emissions in high-income and high-emitting countries (which bear the greatest responsibility for past emissions) and to limit emissions growth in low- and middle-income countries (which account for the majority of current emissions), unprecedented action is now needed by all countries,” the report said.

<h2>World continues to pump record levels of emissions&nbsp;</h2>

It said that the world continues to pump record levels of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, with emissions up 1.2 per cent from 2021 to 2022, thanks to the burning of fossil fuels and industrial processes.

UNEP chief Inger Andersen urged the G20 nations – the world’s wealthiest economies responsible for around 80 per cent of emissions –to lead on reductions, but noted some were in “snooze mode”.

“It is absolutely critical that the G-20 step up,” she said, according to AFP news agency.

The UNEP report stated that the Paris Agreement goals can still be fulfilled if countries adopt strong mitigation measures this decade to narrow the emissions gap.

<h2>Silver lining&nbsp;</h2>

Under the 2015 deal, countries had agreed to limit global warming at “well below” 2 degrees C above pre-industrial times – with a safer limit of 1.5 degrees C if possible.

However till this year, countries have already emitted nearly 1.2 degrees C of global heating, the impact of which could be seen across the planet, the report said.

UNEP said temperatures have gone above 1.5 degrees C for more than 80 days already in 2023, although the Paris warming thresholds will be measured as an average over several decades.

France's late&nbsp;emperor Napoleon Bonaparte’s hat was sold for a record price of 1.932 million euros ($2.1 million) at an auction in Paris on Sunday.

The auction of the hat, which is known as a bicorne, beat the previous record for a Napoleonic hat that was held by the same auction house in 2014. It was bought for €1.88&nbsp;million ($2.05mn) by a South Korean businessman.

According to auctioneer Jeane-Pierre Osenat, the black-coloured hat — which has the French flag’s blue-white-red colours as insignia —&nbsp;attracted interest from collectors “the world over”.

He, however, declined to give the identity or nationality of the eventual buyer.

The hat was last owned by businessman Jean-Louis Noisiez, who died last year.

<h2>Final price went four times more than the reserved price&nbsp;</h2>

The hat was initially estimated for 600,000 to 800,000 euros ($655,00 to $873,000), but the final price went for more than double the estimate and nearly four times the reserve price, the auction house based in Fontainebleau, south of Paris, said.

“One million four hundred fifty thousand [euros] to my left, 1.5 million, we have 1.5 million in the room, 1.5 million for Napoleon’s hat. We’re leaving it at 1.5 million for this major Napoleon symbol, I’m selling for 1.5 million [before fees], no regrets, sold,” Osenat said as he brought down the hammer to applause, reports AFP news agency.

It is believed that Napoleon owned around 120 such hats in total over 15 years, most of which are now lost.

“The hat in itself represented the emperor’s image,” auction house expert Jean-Pierre Osenat said ahead of the sale.

The auction house said that the hat, which went for Sunday’s auction, was worn by Napoleon towards the middle of his time as emperor, which lasted from 1808 to 1815.

The woman, whose name wasn’t revealed, told the Waverly Police Department that&nbsp;her two-year-old boy took her Taurus 9mm firearm from her purse, and it went off.

Fortunately, none of the bullets hit the ceiling of the store, and the child was left with a minor injury to his forehead “due to contact with the magazine,” police said.

He made it clear that while there had been deep conversations on the issue with India, there was no formal proposal yet from either side.

Garcetti noted that US President Joe Biden had spoken strongly on the issue.

Last month, President Biden issued an executive order that required AI manufacturers to provide the federal government with an assessment of their applications' vulnerability to cyberattacks, the data used to train and test the AI and its performance measurements.

"If we don't get in front of AI, the consequences, even if it is a small percentage of likelihood, of something catastrophic happening with our official intelligence could be sooner than we believe,"&nbsp;Garcetti said.

On the India-US 2+2 dialogue last week, Garcetti said the two sides took important steps towards strengthening the major defence partnership which continues to grow and increasing the acceleration seen through initiatives such as the US-India roadmap in industrial cooperation and defence.

He stressed that New Delhi and Washington should deepen their Artificial Intelligence (AI) conversation.

He pitched for India-US collaboration and cooperation in emerging domains.

"...we sometimes just focus on weapons and what is being sold, or potentially co-developed, but the operational level of our militaries...is as critical as any equipment," he said.

India’s northeastern Manipur state has been on alert after an unidentified flying object was spotted near the capital Imphal city airport's runway on Sunday (Nov 19).

Times of India news outlet reported, citing a source, that the unidentified aerial vehicle was spotted in the afternoon at 2 pm (local time) by a&nbsp; Central Industrial Security Force&nbsp;(CISF) personnel following which operations were halted and around 500&nbsp;passengers of three outbound flights were stranded.

NDTV reported, citing sources, that the airport authorities closed the "controlled airspace" and stopped all flight operations immediately. Two flights were diverted, while three were delayed.

According to reports, the&nbsp;air traffic control (ATC) and people on the ground saw the drones around, after which the three flights — two Air India, and an IndiGo flight — were told not to take off. At the same time, two incoming flights were diverted.

"Due to sighting of an unidentified flying object within Imphal controlled airspace, two flights have been diverted and three departing flights have been delayed. Flight operations commence after receipt of clearance from the competent authority," a statement issued by Airport Director Chipemmi Keishing said.

<h2>Flights suspended for three hours&nbsp;</h2>

The three flights—three flights scheduled to depart from Imphal to Agartala, Guwahati and Kolkata—remain&nbsp;suspended till 6 pm. Another flight from Delhi to Imphal&nbsp;was diverted to Kolkata while a flight from Guwahati to&nbsp;Imphal at 3.50 pm, which was also suspended later&nbsp;departed at 6.50 pm.

"The UFO was visible with bare eyes moving westwards of the airfield till 4 pm," an Air Traffic Control (ATC) official told PTI news agency.

The airspace was handed over to the Indian Air Force (IAF) and after it gave the nod, the airspace was restored for commercial flight operations after three hours.

He has also been charged under sections 10 (member of an unlawful association), 13 (for taking part in or committing or advocating any unlawful activity), 16 (terrorist act), 17 (funding terrorist act), 18 (conspiring or attempting to commit, or advocating, abetting, advising or inciting a terrorist act), 18B (for recruiting of any person or persons for terrorist act) &amp; 20 (for being a member of a terrorist gang or a terrorist organization) of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

<h2>Shared threatening video on Nov 4</h2>

In a video shared online on Nov 4, Pannun had asked the Sikh community not to take the Indian carrier flight on the said date, claiming that their lives would be in danger if they did so.

"We are asking the Sikh people not to fly via Air India. From November 19, there will be a global blockade. Air India won't be allowed to operate. Sikh people, don't travel by Air India after November 19. Your life can be in danger," Pannun said.

IGIA is located in New Delhi, and one of the world’s busiest airports.

On November 19 (Sunday), India played Australia in the World Cup final at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

He had also vowed to rename the airport after his plan to secede Punjab from India succeeds.

"The name of this airport will be Shahid Beant Singh, Shahid Satwant Singh Khalistan airport, when Punjab will be liberated," he added.

<h2>Pannun's threat spurred high alert&nbsp;</h2>

Pannun’s assertions and threats have triggered a high alert as well as investigations by security forces in Canada, India, and certain other countries where Air India flies, the NIA said in a statement.

According to the Sun news outlet, a depth gauge failed on one of the Vanguard class submarines, which was also carrying two Trident 2 missiles, during its deployment in the Atlantic Ocean. The sub had been in service for 30 years.

The nuclear submarine’s dials stopped working suddenly when it was about to go on a patrol. Commanders falsely believed that the sub was level but in fact, it was sinking towards the sea floor.

When the vessel was about to enter the “danger zone” of depth that the submarine can withstand, prompt engineers at the other side of the 500ft vessel noticed a second dial and raised the alarm as it plummeted towards the "danger zone", the Sun reported.

“It’s not the engineers’ job to control the sub’s depth but they saw how deep they were and realised something was wrong,” a source told the Sun.

“Technically the sub was still at a depth where we know it can operate, but if it ever has to go that deep the whole crew is piped to action-stations.

“That hadn’t happened. The sub wasn’t supposed to be there, and it was still diving. And if it had carried on going, it doesn’t really bear thinking about.”

<h2>Greatest tragedy averted&nbsp;</h2>

Had the nuclear sub reached the dangerous depths of the sea, it would have caused one of the greatest tragedies in history.
