American presidents saving the day in action movies is not new ground for Hollywood. The leader of the free world taking on terrorists, aliens, and vampires in films like Independence Day, White House Down, Air Force One, and the more absurd Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter has formed its own quirky action sub-genre.
So when I started watching Amazon's G20, directed by Patricia Riggen and starring Viola Davis as the President of the United States, I wondered whether it would be a dramatic thriller, an action-comedy, or a self-aware film that embraced its ridiculous premise. Sadly, G20 is none of these and instead turns out to be a boring and poorly executed disappointment.

Viola Davis stars as soldier-turned-president Danielle Sutton. While the director and writers had an interesting idea, using cryptocurrency and deepfakes to sow chaos, the movie takes it too far. The villain plans to steal all the money in the world (not a joke) and use deep fakes to release cartoonishly evil videos of world leaders.

The second major misstep is the attempt to make us care about the family dynamic between Sutton and her teenage daughter, Serena, played by Marsai Martin. Their troubled relationship feels forced, and Serena is written as a one-note angsty teen, making the emotional angle fall flat.
Instead, the film could have focused on Sutton&rsquo;s PTSD and survivor's guilt from her time in the army, elements that, while not well written, are at least partially redeemed by Davis&rsquo;s strong performance in a handful of emotional scenes.

The greatest offence G20 commits is wasting the immense talent of Viola Davis in such a bland and uninspired action movie. With a lead like Davis, this could have been an intense thriller or even a fun, over-the-top action romp in the vein of Commando. But the film squanders the opportunity to do anything meaningful or memorable.
As for Antony Starr, all I can say is that the man tried with what little he was given, which might as well have been a napkin with &ldquo;you are a bad guy, do bad guy things&rdquo; written on it, followed by a winking emoji.

So when I started watching Amazon's G20, directed by Patricia Riggen and starring Viola Davis as the President of the United States, I wondered whether it would be a dramatic thriller, an action-comedy, or a self-aware film that embraced its ridiculous premise. Sadly, G20 is none of these and instead turns out to be a boring and poorly executed disappointment. <h2>Landon clarifies his role</h2>
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Landon, who is promoting his upcoming movie Drop, clarified that he was not involved in the decision to fire her despite many online rumours blaming him.
&ldquo;I did not fire her. A lot of people think I had something to do with it, and it was not my doing. I had no control of the situation at all. I think in the absence of people understanding how Hollywood works and what the hierarchy is, the fans were like, &lsquo;That&rsquo;s the guy.&rsquo; And so they came for me, knives out.&rdquo;

The director also talked about being targeted online after Barrera's firing and receiving death threats.
&ldquo;People were threatening to kill me and my family, to the point where the FBI was getting involved. I got messages saying, &lsquo;I&rsquo;m going to find your kids, and I&rsquo;m going to kill them because you support child murder... The head of security at various studios and the FBI had to examine the threats. It was highly aggressive and really scary.&rdquo;
Meanwhile, Scream 7 is still in production and recently brought back actor Matthew Lillard, who played a major role in the first instalment of the franchise in 1996.
Scream 7 will be hitting theaters on February 27, 2026.

Former Scream 7 director Christopher Landon clears the air on the controversial Melissa Barrera firing and reveals that despite rumours floating online, he had nothing to do with the actress being fired from the horror franchise. Her departure led to co-lead Jenna Ortega also exiting the project, resulting in Neve Campbell stepping in as the new lead and the studio reworking the entire plot of the movie, with former Scream screenwriter Kevin Williamson taking over the project from Landon. A lot of people think I had something to do with it, and it was not my doing. I had no control of the situation at all. I think in the absence of people understanding how Hollywood works and what the hierarchy is, the fans were like, ‘That’s the guy.’ And so they came for me, knives out.” Also Read: Andor: Disney announces updated release timings for upcoming second season The director also talked about being targeted online after Barrera's firing and receiving death threats. “People were threatening to kill me and my family, to the point where the FBI was getting involved. I got messages saying, ‘I’m going to find your kids, and I’m going to kill them because you support child murder... The head of security at various studios and the FBI had to examine the threats. It was highly aggressive and really scary.” Meanwhile, Scream 7 is still in production and recently brought back actor Matthew Lillard, who played a major role in the first instalment of the franchise in 1996.
