Croatian authorities said they planned to hold a national day of mourning on Saturday.

But part of his caucus has urged him to resign, worried that voter fatigue with his leadership will hamstring the Liberals in the next election.

Mamadou is a name popular among men originating from Muslim ethnic groups in West Africa.
"The Elysee strongly denies these reported remarks, which were not subjected to any verification by the presidency before publication," an official in the presidency said.

Before the denial was issued, several left-wing politicians had strongly condemned the reported comments.
"These racist remarks by the president... are an insult to the Republic. It is an absolute disgrace," said Manuel Bompard, coordinator of the France Unbowed party (LFI) on X, echoing the indignation of many in his hard-left movement.
"I can't wait for him (Macron) to go." 
The alleged remarks "are damning", added the Communist senator for Paris, Ian Brossat.

It also claimed he called Greens leader Marine Tondelier and Lucie Castets, who the left wanted to nominate as premier, "cocotte", a derogatory term for women.
"Yesterday we learned of extremely shocking homophobic remarks made by the president about Gabriel Attal," Tondelier said on X. "Today, they are sexist remarks. We are impatiently waiting for tomorrow."

Macron was also facing controversy over a comment he made Thursday while on a visit to the French Indian Ocean archipelago of Mayotte, which was devastated by Cyclone Chido last weekend.

Greens MP Sandrine Rousseau accused Macron of going to Mayotte with "an arrogant attitude and giving lessons".

But fisherman spotted the drifting trawler off Sri Lanka's northern coast at Mullivaikkal at dawn on Thursday.
While unusual, it is not the first boat to head to Sri Lanka -- about 1,750 kilometres (1,100 miles) across open seas southwest of Myanmar.
The Sri Lankan navy rescued more than 100 Rohingya refugees in distress on a boat off their shores in December 2022.
The navy spokesman said Friday that language difficulties had made it hard to understand where the refugees had been intending to reach, suggesting that "recent cyclonic weather" may have pushed them off course.

MH370's last transmission was about 40 minutes after it took off from Kuala Lumpur for Beijing. The pilots signed off as the plane entered Vietnamese air space over the Gulf of Thailand and soon after its transponder was turned off.
Military radar showed the plane left its flight path to fly back over northern Malaysia then out into the Andaman Sea before turning south, then all contact was lost.
Debris, some confirmed and some believed to be from the aircraft, has since washed up along the coast of Africa and on islands in the Indian Ocean.
Loke said the proposal to resume the search in the southern Indian Ocean came from exploration firm Ocean Infinity, which had conducted the last search for the plane that ended in 2018.
A contract would be signed to cover an 18-month period and the firm would receive $70 million if wreckage found was substantive, he said, adding the search would be on the seabed of a new area covering 15,000 sq km (5,790 sq miles).

Witnesses said members of the crowd pushed to get hold of the money, causing a stampede, as Nigeria grappled with its worst economic crisis in a generation.
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde shared his condolences for the Ibadan victims on X on Wednesday. 
"Our hearts remain with the families and loved ones impacted by this tragedy. May the souls of the departed rest in peace," Makinde said. 
"We sympathise with the parents whose joy has suddenly been turned to mourning due to these deaths," he added.
