Russia on Friday (Dec 20) launched a barrage of missiles on Ukraine's capital Kyiv, killing at least one person, and cutting heating to hundreds of buildings in cold temperatures, as the war between the two countries nears its three-year mark.
Russia said that it launched this latest attack against Ukraine as a retaliation for a strike using Western missiles on a chemical plant in Russia earlier this week.
<h2>'Moscow used eight missiles in the attack'</h2>
Kyiv's Military Administration Head Serhiy Popko said that the Russian military used eight missiles, including hypersonic Kinzhal missiles and Iskander/KN-23 ballistic missiles.

When 35-year-old doctor Victoria read the warnings on social media, she ran to a shelter. "Even in the shelter, bricks fell on my head. It's just horrible when people start running in from the street," Victoria told AFP.

Ukraine's foreign ministry said on Friday that diplomatic missions of Albanian, Argentine, North Macedonian, Palestinian, Portuguese and Montenegrin missions were damaged in the Russian missile attack. 
Separately, the European Union condemned the strike by saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin's disregard for international law reached new heights.

India and Kuwait are set to firm up ties with the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a first by an Indian prime minister to the West Asian country in 43 years. The last visit to Kuwait was by the then Indian prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1981.
Announcing the visit, India's Ministry of External Affairs earlier this week said, "India and Kuwait share traditionally close and friendly relations which are rooted in history and have been underpinned by economic and strong people to people linkages...The visit will provide an opportunity to further strengthen the multifaceted ties between India and Kuwait."
During the visit on 21st-2nd December, Modi will hold discussions with the leadership of Kuwait. 
Several pillars to the ties, from trade to history to diaspora, will be on focus. 
<h2>History of India-Kuwait relations</h2>
India and Kuwait formally established ties in 1961, but the relationship goes back in history. Pre-oil Kuwait had significant maritime trade with India which was the backbone of its economy.
Wooden dhows from Kuwait used to come to India, carrying with it pearls. Arabian horses and pearls were traded for wood, cereals, clothes and spices. The Indian rupee remained legal tender in Kuwait until 1961.
<h2>Political ties between India and Kuwait </h2>
Initially, after establishment of ties in 1961, Delhi was represented by a Trade Commissioner. From the Indian side, Vice President Dr Zakir Husain (1965), Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (1981) and Vice President Hamid Ansari (2009) visited the country.
From Kuwait, Crown Prince and Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah (1964), Amir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (1980) and again in 1983 (for the NAM Summit); Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah (2006); Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Al-Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah (2013) visited India.
The last high-level visit from either side was that of the Prime Minister of Kuwait to India in 2013.
PM Modi and Kuwait’s Crown Prince met on the sidelines of UNGA in September 2024.
External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar travelled to Kuwait on 18 August 2024, while Kuwait FM Abdullah Ali Al-Yahya travelled to India earlier this month.

Kuwait is among India’s top trading partners, with bilateral trade valued at USD 10.47 billion in FY 2023-24.
Kuwait is India’s 6th largest crude supplier, meeting 3 per cent of the country’s energy needs.
Indian exports to Kuwait reached USD 2 billion for the first time, while investments by the Kuwait Investment Authority in India exceed USD 10 billion.
<h2>Indian diaspora in Kuwait</h2>
Indians form the largest expatriate community in Kuwait, numbering around 1 million and  present across various sectors.
The Indian community is the ‘living bridge’ between the two countries. Kuwait's national radio in April this year launched a weekly Hindi radio programme. A Hindi Chair at the Gulf University for Science and Technology was established in September of this year.

During the visit, PM Modi will be addressing the diaspora.
<h2>Energy ties between India and Kuwait</h2>
Kuwait is one of India's top suppliers of crude oil and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). During FY 2023-24, Kuwait was the 9th largest oil supplier with about 3 per cent of India’s total energy needs.
The two sides have a Joint Working Group on Hydrocarbons, a mechanism to ensure a stable energy partnership.
There's an ongoing interest from Kuwait to invest in India's energy sector and Strategic Petroleum Reserves.
<h2>Geopolitical impact</h2>
The upcoming visit of PM Modi to Kuwait will be closely watched since it comes at a time when West Asia has been in turmoil.
India is expected to restate its policy on Palestine. Delhi has supported a negotiated two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine issue. This refers to  the establishment of a sovereign, independent and viable state of Palestine within secure and recognised borders, living side by side in peace with Israel.
Modi's visit is also the first vby an Indian PM to the country since Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990. The stance of Delhi back then had irked Kuwait.

PM Modi has already travelled to several West Asian countries since 2014, when he first took charge.
These include UAE to which he travelled the maximum number of times in the region: 2015, 2018, 2019, 2022 and 2024.

It was later found that the men fighting in the video were not the airport employees but workers at concession stands.

Serving as Treasury’s Economic Secretary, Siddiq is entrusted with dealing with corruption allegations inside UK financial market. She was appointed as anti-corruption minister by UK Labour Party following July victory.

Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the December 4 shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, appeared in a Manhattan federal court Thursday (Dec 20), facing charges that include murder, stalking, and firearms offences. The 26-year-old was extradited from Pennsylvania earlier in the day after being arrested at a McDonald's restaurant last week. 
<h2>Legal proceedings and charges</h2>
As per the US Department of Justice, Mangione, an Ivy League graduate, faces federal charges that could lead to life imprisonment or the death penalty.
This comes alongside separate New York state charges, including second-degree murder classified as "an act of terrorism."  
Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Mangione's attorney, called the simultaneous federal and state charges "highly unusual."
According to a CNN report, she also noted that her team is not seeking bail at this time.

US diplomats are in Syria to meet the country's new Islamist-led rulers, the State Department said Friday, as outside powers seek assurances they will be moderate and inclusive.
The ouster of former president Bashar al-Assad ended decades of abuses and years of civil war, but it has raised concerns about the rights of minorities, as well as women, and the future of the semi-autonomous Kurdish region.
On Thursday, hundreds of demonstrators in Damascus demanded democracy and women's rights, in the first such protest since Assad's departure.
In northeast Syria's Qamishli, thousands demonstrated in support of a US-backed, Kurdish-led force that is under pressure from Turkey and allied rebel fighters.

The lightning offensive that forced Assad's departure was led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), which is rooted in Al-Qaeda's Syria branch but has more recently adopted a moderate tone.
Still, its sudden arrival in the capital has left foreign governments scrambling for a new policy, particularly in some countries where HTS is designated a terrorist group.
US diplomats have not been to Damascus on a formal mission since the early days of the civil war that erupted after Assad cracked down on anti-government protests in 2011.
They will meet representatives from HTS, which Washington deems a terrorist group, as well as activists, minority groups and civil society, the State Department said.
They will speak with Syrians about "their vision for the future of their country and how the United States can help support them," a State Department spokesperson said.
The delegation includes the US point man on hostages, who has been seeking clues on missing Americans including Austin Tice, a journalist who was kidnapped in Syria in August 2012.
The trip comes a week after Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the United States had been in direct contact with HTS, as he toured Syria's neighbours.
<h2>Kurdish fears</h2>
At talks in the Jordanian resort of Aqaba, Western and Arab powers as well as Turkey jointly called Saturday for an "inclusive, non-sectarian and representative government" that respects the rights of all of Syria's diverse communities.
That call was echoed at talks in Cairo on Thursday by countries including Turkey and Iran, which backed different sides in Syria's civil war.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, whose country backed Assad, called for "the participation of all (Syrian) groups in the future government... as well as respect for different beliefs and religions".
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who supported the opposition to Assad, called for reconciliation and restoration of Syria's "territorial integrity and unity".
He also urged the "establishment of a Syria free of terrorism."
Turkey has been putting pressure on Kurdish-led fighters and said Thursday it would continue military preparations until they "disarm."
The semiautonomous northeastern region of Syria is protected by the Syrian Democratic Forces, a group led by People's Protection Units (YPG).
Turkey accuses the YPG of being a branch of the Kurdistan Workers Party, which both Washington and Ankara consider a terrorist group.
Kurdish leaders in Syria have welcomed Assad's ouster and raised the three-star independence-era rebel flag, but many in the region fear continued attacks by Turkey and allied fighters.
Several thousand people chanted "The Syrian people are one" and "No to war in our region, no to Turkey's attack" at Thursday's demonstration in Qamishli.
<h2>'No to religious rule'</h2>
In Damascus meanwhile, a diverse crowd chanted "No to religious rule" and "We want a democracy, not a religious state."
The protest came days after a spokesman for the interim government said "female representation in ministries or parliament... is premature", citing "biological" and other considerations.
Majida Mudarres, a retired civil servant, said she was furious about the comments.
"Women have a big role in political life," the 50-year-old told AFP.

"There can be bans and prohibitions, but one has to always come up with alternatives — something more engaging and more interesting than a porn website to fill the void that causes greater interest," the Russian president argued at his annual press conference&nbsp;aired by state-backed RT news channel.
