According to local media reports, many medical institutions in northern China are stretched to a limit as paediatric visits have touched a historic high in the past one week, with the onset of winter compounding the uptick.

The main epicentres have been located in Beijing and Liaoning province, where schools have been ordered to shut down owing to rising cases.

<h2>Hospitals overburdened </h2>

The Civil Aviation General Hospital in Beijing last week said that the paediatric outpatient clinic had recorded 550-650 visits daily, a rise of 30 to 50 per cent compared with the same period last year.

The hospital said that it has been shoring up manpower in the paediatrics unit with senior doctors from the cardiovascular, neurology, and critical care departments, and added that it has increased the number of security guards on-site, reports Business Insider.

Around 96 kilometres southeast Tianjian Children's Hospital Director Liu Wei published a Saturday letter via the city's WeChat announcement channel, saying his staff were overwhelmed.

More than 13,171 patients had been admitted to the hospital's two campuses in the last 24 hours, Liu wrote, urging the parents to remain calm.

"Our hospital staff have been working hard," Liu wrote. "They are also children of their parents. Their children have also been having fevers."

An hospital affiliated to the Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine said all paediatric department staff had to cancel their holidays, with administrative officials working in shifts for round-the-clock coordination of resources to cope with the surge, digital outlet Thepaper.cn reported.

A citizen from Beijing told Taiwanese news website FTV News, “Many, many (children) are hospitalised. They don’t cough and have no symptoms. They just have a high temperature and many develop pulmonary nodules.”

Meanwhile, Chinese netizens have expressed concerns over a wave of hospitalisations, with parents complaining that they are struggling to book appointments.

"It's not just in Beijing. Chongqing is facing difficulties over here," a person wrote on Weibo, China's version of X, Business Insider reported. "All the children have respiratory illnesses."

A 49-year-old Normanton local Derek Lord who has a vehicle hire business told AFP news agency, "Mate, there's rats everywhere."&nbsp;"They're that bold they're coming out during the day."

Speaking about how the rats are wreaking havoc on his pet ducks, he said that the ducks are "going mad" after rats entered their cages and took away their eggs.&nbsp;

In a historic espionage case, the jury announced its landmark ruling stating that a former Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) intelligence official was guilty of breaching Canada's secrets law. Notably, his case is the first time an individual was tried under Canada’s current espionage law.&nbsp;

The 51-year-old Ortis was director general of the RCMP national intelligence coordination unit. He was arrested in 2020 on accusations of abusing his position in order to obtain sensitive material from Canada and the strong Five Eyes intelligence collaboration, which also includes Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.&nbsp;

Prosecutor Judy Kliewer was quoted in local reports as saying that "we will be seeking a very lengthy prison term" in the range of 20 years or more. And, he is not only a "flight risk, but he’s an asset. He has so much information. This is not a usual case at all".&nbsp;

Cameron Ortis, Canada's ex-police intel chief, convicted of leaking secrets

A 26-year-old Indian student Aaditya Adlakha died on November 11 after&nbsp;succumbing to his injuries from a shooting incident in the US state of Ohio. The incident took place on November 9 in the Western Hills neighbourhood in Cincinnati city.&nbsp;

Adlakha, a fourth-year doctoral student in the molecular and developmental biology programme at the University of Cincinnati, was shot dead inside his car, media reports said. On the day of the incident, Cincinnati police found Adlakha's injured body inside the car that crashed into a wall.&nbsp;

Following the tragic incident, the Indian student was rushed for treatment at UC Medical Center. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries two days later.

According to Al Jazeera, Salmiya was arrested while travelling in a World Health Organization-operated convoy with other medical personnel and patients.

Earlier in an interview to CNN, an IDF official said that Salmiya had to be questioned about the alleged presence of Hamas operatives inside the hospital.

The train involved in the incident belongs to a company named&nbsp;CSX. As per a statement from CSX, the freight railroad company operating in the Eastern United States and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec, the derailment also involved&nbsp;two molten sulphur cars as well.&nbsp;

"At approximately 2:23 p.m. today, a CSX train derailed north of Livingston, KY. Preliminary information indicates that at least 16 cars were involved, including two molten sulphur cars that have been breached and have lost some of their contents which is on fire," the company's statement read.&nbsp;

According to company information shared on its website, when molten sulphur burns it releases sulphur dioxide. The company assured that specialised equipment is being deployed to conduct aerial survey of the affected region.

"CSX is in close contact with the Rockcastle County emergency teams as they continue to assess the situation and we appreciate their swift response. We will work together with the local authorities to secure the area and safety is our top priority as we develop a recovery plan," it added.&nbsp;

As per local media reports, all four international border crossings in Western New York were closed on Wednesday (Nov 22) after the incident occurred.

<h2>Incident kills two</h2>

As per the report, two people in the vehicle were&nbsp;dead and one border patrol official was&nbsp;wounded in the incident.

New York's governor ruled out signs of&nbsp;terrorist activity saying that it was a horrific car crash.

"There is no evidence at this time that this was terrorist activity," Hochul told a briefing while confirming earlier reports that two people had died.

"(It was) a horrific incident, a crash, an explosion... but at this time no known terrorist connection," she added.

The Niagara Gazette newspaper, citing law enforcement sources, said the car dashed onto the bridge plaza, tore through a fence dividing the inbound lanes from the outbound lanes, and toward the inspection lanes, where it burst into flames.

<h2>Situation 'very serious', says Trudeau</h2>

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the vehicle explosion at the Canada-US border crossing near Niagara Falls "a very serious situation".

"This is obviously a very serious situation at Niagara Falls. There was a vehicle explosion at the Rainbow Bridge crossing," he told the House of Commons.

"I've been briefed by the NSA and the Minister of Public Safety, CBSA, RCMP and Transport Canada are all fully engaged and providing the necessary support," Trudeau said.

"We are in close contact with U.S. officials and will continue to work closely with them. We will continue to be engaged. We will provide updates. Updates I can give right now is there are four border crossings that are right now closed. Rainbow Bridge, Whirlpool Bridge, Queensland Bridge and Peace Bridge. Additional measures are being contemplated and activated at all border crossings across the country. We are taking this extraordinarily seriously," he added.

Meanwhile,&nbsp;Ontario Premier Doug Ford in a post on X said that the law enforcement teams in Canada were "actively engaged in assessing the situation".

North Korea on Thursday (Nov 23) said that it was suspending a military accord that it had reached with South Korea, under which measures were agreed upon to ease military tensions between the two countries, news agency Yonhap reported.

"From now on, our army will never be bound by the September 19 North-South Military Agreement," the statement said.

"We will withdraw military measures taken to prevent military tensions and clashes in all areas such as land, sea and air, and will place strong armed forces and advanced military equipment in border areas," the nuclear-armed North's defence ministry said, according to the South's Yonhap news agency.

The ministry said it "will not be restrained" by the 2018 agreement any longer.

This move by Pyongyang comes after Seoul on Wednesday announced that it would resume its surveillance operations along the border and would also partially suspend the 2018 deal in retaliation to North's successful launch of a spy rocket satellite.

The Comprehensive Military Agreement was signed in Pyongyang on September 19, 2018, by Kim and South Korean President Moon Jae-in.&nbsp;

Under the pact, both countries agreed to "completely cease all hostile acts against each other", by implementing military confidence-building measures in the air, land, and sea domains.

The starting time of the truce and release of hostages captured by Hamas during its October 7 assault on Israel had yet to be officially announced, however, as per news agency Reuters reports, an Egyptian security source had stated that the mediators aimed at a start time of 10 am on Thursday.

"The negotiations on the release of our hostages are advancing and continuing constantly," Israeli National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said in a statement released by the prime minister's office.

"The contacts on the release of our hostages are advancing and continuing constantly," he said

"The start of the release will take place according to the original agreement between the sides, and not before Friday," the statement added.

This came after journalists were notified that a media centre would open in Tel Aviv at noon on Thursday "to cover the return of the hostages".

As per local media reports, the 24-hour delay in the release of the hostages was because the agreement between the militant group Hamas and mediator Qatar was yet to be signed.

"No one said there would be a release tomorrow except the media ... We had to make it clear that no release is planned before Friday, because of the uncertainty that hostages' families are facing," Israel's public broadcaster Kan quoted a source in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office as saying.

The Israeli government, early on Wednesday (Nov 22), approved an agreement to free roughly 50 hostages who were abducted into the Gaza Strip during the Palestinian militant group Hamas' onslaught on October 7, in exchange for the release of imprisoned Palestinian women and minors.

Indonesia’s police have named the chief of the anti-graft commission as a suspect in a corruption case involving the former agricultural minister who was detained on graft charges&nbsp;last month. The announcement late Wednesday (Nov 22) is being viewed as a setback for one of Indonesia’s most respected agencies, in a country where corruption continues to be rampant.&nbsp;

<h2>What do we know about the case?</h2>

Firli Bahuri, chief of the Corruption Eradication Commission, is the latest official in President Joko Widodo’s administration to face graft allegations and has been named by the police to face what they called a “corruption case in the form of extortion.”

This is also the first time that the anti-corruption body chief has been accused of the crime since it was formed in 2002 after the fall of dictator Suharto.&nbsp;

Bahuri, according to the police, is a suspect in the alleged case involving extortion and receiving gifts or gratuities in legal dealings with the agriculture ministry between 2020 and 2023.

Ade Safri Simanjuntak, Jakarta police’s director for special crime, told reporters they have “sufficient evidence to name...the KPK chief as a suspect in a corruption case in the form of extortion,” referring to the Indonesian initials of the corruption commission.

Bahuri would be questioned, “as the KPK chief in his capacity as a suspect in alleged corruption crime,” he added.&nbsp;

The officials have confiscated foreign currency transaction documents from Singapore, and $477,730 (7.4 billion rupiah) after raids conducted on two locations and interviewing more than 90 people, according to the Jakarta police official.&nbsp;

If found guilty of graft charges, the KPK chief could face life in prison as a corruption conviction for state officials carries a maximum sentence. In a post on their website, Indonesia’s police said that Firli is suspected of extorting money from Syahrul Yasin Limpo.&nbsp;

Limpo, the former agriculture minister was detained last month following a series of accusations which also included alleged stealing of over $800,000 in public funds. The allegations against Bahuri are said to be linked to Limpo’s case.&nbsp;

In the meantime, as per Indonesian law, the president must suspend any KPK chief named as a criminal suspect. When asked about allegations against Bahuri, Widodo said on Thursday (Nov 23) that he would “respect the process of law.”

"Unfortunately, these measures have not been able to stop this phenomenon," Orpo said.

The government said that "it is clear that foreign authorities and other actors have played a role in facilitating the entry of persons crossing the border into Finland".

"The situation also involves international crime," the government said in a statement.

Earlier in October, the Finnish border guard warned of a shift in Russia's policy as it started to allow migrants without proper documentation to cross the border.

Putin's offensive pushed previously neutral Finland into US-led transatlantic &nbsp;alliance (NATO). Sweden too formally applied for NATO membership, bringing the US forces (by virtue of them being the NATO allies) closest to Russian borders than they ever were.&nbsp;

Speaking to France 5 TV, the parliamentarian said that she wants to raise awareness that it can happen to anyone, regardless of their status and age.

&nbsp;“Anyone can go through what I suffered,” Josso told France 5 TV, urging the government to take action.

Josso accused the senator of giving her a glass of champagne spiked with the drug ecstasy.
