The CEO of Boeing on Tuesday (Jan 9) took responsibility for a near-catastrophic mid-air window blowout of an Alaska Airlines flight even as the aviation regulator&nbsp;of the US ordered the temporary grounding of all Boeing 737 Max 9 airplanes operating in the country.&nbsp; 
 
"We're going to approach this (by) number one acknowledging our mistake," said Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun, while interacting with employees at a safety meeting which was held after the emergency landing of Alaska Airlines' Boeing 737 Max 9&nbsp;on Friday (Jan 5).

"We're going to approach it with 100 per cent and complete transparency every step of the way," the American aviation giant's CEO said.

Calhoun, who ascended to the top position of Boeing in January 2020, expressed his commitment to work with the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) which has been investigating the incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has now grounded all 737 Max 9 planes- 171 in total-&nbsp;in the US.&nbsp;

The authorities also ordered Boeing to revise guidelines regarding&nbsp;plane inspections.

In a statement, quoted by the New York Times, the agency said, “Upon receiving the revised version of instructions from Boeing, the FAA will conduct a thorough review. The safety of the flying public, not speed, will determine the timeline for returning the Boeing 737-9 Max to service."

<h2 lang="en-US">Door plug not affixed adequately: NTSB</h2>

The affected panel of the plane, which is a door plug, is used by the airlines to fill the emergency exit in planes that are not needed.

On Monday night (Jan 8), NTSB investigators suggested that the part was not adequately affixed. 
 
The FAA on Tuesday said that they were still working with Boeing for finalising detailed inspection instructions for grounded planes. 
 
"Boeing offered an initial version of instructions yesterday which they are now revising because of feedback received in response," said the FAA.

"Upon receiving the revised version of instructions from Boeing the FAA will conduct a thorough review,” it added.

Boeing said that they have been in contact with the customers and the FAA on requirements. "As part of the process, we are making updates based on their feedback and requirements," said a spokesman. 
 
Meanwhile, Alaska Airlines apologised for the inconvenience faced by the passengers in a post on X.

"We understand that travel plans have been impacted, and we are doing everything possible to minimise the disruption," posted Alaska Airlines, while reiterating that it is waiting for more direction from Boeing and the FAA.

"Until then, the fleet will remain grounded," Alaska Airlines added.

It was reported that the gathering took place in front of former headquarters of the Italian Social Movement (MSI) in Rome. MSI was formed by supporters of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini after the Second World War.

It has been alleged that the teenaged right-wing activists were killed by far-left activists in 1978. No one was ever convicted in the case.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy party grew out of the MSI in post-fascist years. Elly Schlein called on Meloni to condemn the fascist salute event.

The court where the 77-year-old former president arrived is just a few blocks away from US Capitol building, which was stormed by his supporters in Janauary 2021. The last attack on the US Capitol building took place when America was still a British colony.

The trial over the election charges is set to begin on March 4. Trump's legal team has appealed quashing the charges claiming that he has "absolute immunity" and can't be prosecuted for his actions while he was in the White House.

By January 6, 2021, although it was clear that Trump had lost the election, he technically still was US president since current President Joe Biden had not formally taken charge.

This is not the first time an immunity claim has been made. Just last month, US District Judge Tanya Chutkan rejected immunity saying that even a former president can't have a "lifelong 'get-out-of-jail-free' pass." Chutkan will preside over the election-related trial against Trump.

Speaking to our diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, he said, "We have more than a million Australians of Indian descent, which is one in every 25 Australians and they are among the most educated, the most employed and make some of the biggest contributions in business or politics."

Charlton, who is a member of the House of Representatives of Australia, represents the Division of Parramatta, which is part of the state of New South Wales. Parramatta has a large number of members of the Indian diaspora. The MP is in India for the launch of his book "Australia's pivot to India" which was launched at the India foundation, in the presence of India's energy minister Hardeep Puri.&nbsp;

WION: Sir, if you can talk about your book, and how do you see India-Australia relationship going forward? 
Andrew Charlton: India-Australia relationship has never been stronger and the message of this book is that we need to capitalize on that opportunity in order to build a strong partnership between Australia and India, and that partnership will benefit both countries contributing to peace and prosperity of our region.

WION: Can you explain the India-Australia relationship in cricketing terms? 
Andrew Charlton: Well, it is very strong. We have two very good teams and what we've been doing against getting those teams not just to play against each other, but to play with each other to achieve great things. And I think the IPL is a good example of that. So IPL is something that brings together many Australian players and coaches and other officials all together inside the majesty of Indian cricket. And for the first time Australia is playing cricket with India, not just against India.

WION: So my final question is on the Indian diaspora, how do you see the role of the diaspora in your country? 
Andrew Charlton: Well, the Indian diaspora in the country makes a massive and wonderful contribution to the Australian community. We have more than a million Australians of Indian descent, which is one in every 25 Australians and they are among the most educated, the most employed and make some of the biggest contributions in business or politics, media and culture. And they are a very important way in Australia's multicultural success story. And a testament to the success of Australian diversity

WION: Some irritants as well, we have seen certain incidents of violence and vandalism, particularly when it comes to Khalistanis. If you can talk about that, is this a worry for you? 
Andrew Charlton: Politically, the Australian community is very strong and by and large it is a very harmonious community. For me it is extremely important to ensure the safety and security of all Australians, including Indian-Australians who are practicing their faith. There is no place in Australia for any violence against any group, not Hindu groups, not Sikh groups and Australia has put the safety and security of these groups at the top of our priority list.

"Misinformation and disinformation are biggest short-term risks, while extreme weather and critical change to Earth systems are greatest long-term concern," the report said.

"Concerns over a persistent cost-of-living crisis and the intertwined risks of AI-driven misinformation and disinformation, and societal polarization dominated the risks outlook for 2024," it added.&nbsp;

Misinformation is incorrect information while disinformation is false information spread with an aim of deceiving people.

“Security, EU and NATO integration, cooperation on electronic warfare and drones, and further coordination of European support are all on the agenda,” said the Ukrainian president.&nbsp;

According to Nauseda’s office, the presidents of both countries will hold talks and a joint press conference. The Ukrainian leader will also give a public speech.&nbsp;

The Baltic tour marks Zelensky’s first official trip abroad this year. The visit to the three countries also comes as other Kyiv allies in the West are hesitant to give the war-torn country more aid, nearly two years since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.&nbsp;

He noted that with American military assistance to Ukraine stalled in the United States Congress, allies in the EU need to step up, reiterating that the German government would support Kyiv for as long as necessary.

While Berlin had faced criticism during the initial months of the invasion for failing to step up and provide military backing to Kyiv, it is now among the top providers of both weapons and financial aid to the war-torn country.&nbsp;

AFP has reported citing sources that the powerful Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin (41) is likely to be retained as he has received assurances from Macron to that effect.

The future of Bruno Le Maire, the Finance and Economy Minister, remains uncertain as it isn't clear whether he'll agree to work under Attal who was a junior minister in his own department.

There is uncertainty over the position of Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna just as it is with Transport Minister Clement Beaune's.

Attal will also have to find a replacement for the education ministry which he himself previously held.

Though Macron's decision to choose Attal as the PM signalled his intention to infuse young blood into his government, Attal's name wasn't finalised before some negotiations.

AFP said that before finalising Attal, Macron had to overcome opposition from some cabinet ministers and also key powerbrokers in French politics. These included ex-premier Edouard Philippe and Alexis Kohler, presidential chief of staff.

Reports in French media also said that there was some dispute before Macron zeroed in on Attal's name. Some reports have suggested that Attal will be overpowered by Macron, a seasoned hand in the presidential office by now.

In the French political system, the president is responsible for setting general policies while the job of running day-to-day government affairs falls on the shoulders of the prime minister. It is hence, the PM who may&nbsp;get more flak in case of any political or administrative turbulence.

It was seen an imperative for Macron to reshuffle his cabinet to prevent projecting an image of himself as a 'lame duck' leader. His centrist government has lost the parliamentary majority after 2022 elections.

Macron will not be able to contest 2027 presidential elections, a fact which is seen by many to be Marine Le Pen's best chance to become president.

The decades-long scandal involves thousands of branch owner-operators and hundreds of wrongful convictions. According to the BBC, there are more than 900 convictions linked to the scandal over 16 years.&nbsp;

In a statement, Sunak, describing the scandal as “one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in our nation’s history” said that his government will introduce new legislation to make sure that the victims of the scandal are “swiftly exonerated and compensated”.&nbsp;

Speaking in the House of Commons after the UK PM, Kevin Hollinrake, member of Parliament and Post Office minister said hundreds fell victim to a “brutal and arbitrary exercise of power” by the state-owned entity.&nbsp;

Hollinrake told the Commons that amid the ongoing public inquiry about the scandal, they have found evidence that suggests that the Post Office acted with “incompetence and malevolence”.&nbsp;

He also noted that the bill that the government has sought to introduce could lead to some people fraudulently claiming compensation, but it will be a price worth paying.&nbsp;

“The risk is that instead of unjust convictions, we should end up with unjust acquittals,” said the Post Office minister. He added, “These are exceptional circumstances, and we need to act quickly and decisively. Time is one thing that we and the convicted postmasters do not have.”

The opposition Labour Party has welcomed the decision indicating that the bill introduced would swiftly pass through the parliament.&nbsp;
