<p>China too is a net importer of semiconductor chips and Taiwan is its primary exporter. Over $47 billion worth of semiconductor chips were imported by China in 2023 alone&nbsp;(The United States&nbsp;is a top semiconductor importer from Taiwan).</p>

<p>A disruption to semiconductor production could have dramatic effects on the world economy, perhaps much more than the Covid pandemic&nbsp;or the Ukraine war, according to Miller.&nbsp;This explains Washington's increased focus on Chinese activities in the Taiwan Strait and frequent assertiveness over the maintenance of the status quo between Taipei and Beijing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While China's claim over Taiwan predates the semiconductor boom by a few decades, analysts argue that China's reliance on chips manufactured in Taiwan is so huge that it makes a full-blown&nbsp;attack on the self-ruled island less likely.&nbsp;</p>

The persistent threat of war from China, despite Beijing's unavoidable&nbsp;stake in peace,&nbsp;is likely to complicate Lai's presidential years.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Instead of toys, Lai quite literally had trees to climb. He did not have privilege, and like all underdogs, he had to prove himself.</p>

<p>"One of the biggest assets my father left me was being impoverished," Lai, former mayor of Taiwan's southern city of Tainan, was quoted as saying by TIME magazine in October 2023.<br />

<p>There is something pertinent about democracies worldwide electing an underdog at different points in time in history: For instance,&nbsp;former US President Harry S Truman, son of a livestock dealer;&nbsp;Britain's former Prime Minister&nbsp;Margaret Thatcher, daughter of a grocery shop owner; India's Narendra Modi, son of a tea seller. All three have been hugely consequential not just for their respective countries but also for the rest of the world.</p>

<p>Over the weekend, Taiwan added Lai Ching-te to the list of self-made leaders — and thus a miracle of democracy — who turned the course of their lives to end up at the top of the leadership ladder.</p>

<p>While Lai credits his work ethic as having&nbsp;changed the course of his life, whether or not he will change of course of affairs vis-a-vis Taipei-Beijing ties, will be closely watched across the world during his presidential years.</p>

<p>A volcano situated on the north of the Icelandic fishing village of Grindavik erupted early on Sunday (Jan 14), just hours after residents were evacuated in the vicinity of the area, the authorities said.</p>

<p>This is the fifth volcanic eruption that has occurred in Iceland in nearly three years. The most recent occurred on December 18 in the same region, southwest of the capital Reykjavik.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The eruption took place at 8:00 am (0800 GMT), the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"A crack has opened up on both sides of the dykes that have begun to be built north of Grindavik," the Met Office wrote.</p>

<p>According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), the lava was advancing towards the town and had reached a distance of approximately 450 metres (1,500 feet).</p>

<p>"From measurements from the Icelandic coastguard helicopter, the (lava's) perimeter is now about 450 metres (yards) from the northernmost houses in the town," it said. Two of the houses had also caught fire in Grindavik.</p>

<p>A rebel alliance in northern&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;has agreed to a ceasefire with the ruling military during China-mediated talks, according to some of the parties involved, after a months-long coordinated offensive that threatened to weaken the junta's grip on power.</p>

<p>The military, which overthrew an elected government in 2021, has been battling an alliance of ethnic minority armies fighting to end its control of their regions since late October. In particular, there has been intense violence along the northern border with China.</p>

<p>The joint offensive, backed by a parallel pro-democracy, civilian-led government, has posed the biggest battlefield challenge to the junta since the coup and caused concern in China about the potential for disruptions to border trade and a refugee influx.</p>

<p>A leader of one of the rebel groups, TNLA, told Reuters on Friday that the "Three Brotherhood Alliance" and the military agreed to a "ceasefire without advancing further". He declined to be named due to the sensitivity of the matter.</p>

<p>"China hopes that all parties concerned in&nbsp;Myanmar&nbsp;will earnestly implement the ceasefire agreement already reached and exercise maximum restraint," she said.</p>

<p>Beijing had also said last month the parties had agreed on a temporary ceasefire and to maintain dialogue.</p>

<p>Between August 5, 2019, and August 23, 2019, eBay's security team, including Baugh, orchestrated a harassment campaign to intimidate the Steiners and influence the newsletter's reporting.</p>

<p>The DOJ highlighted the disturbing tactics employed, ranging from sending ominous deliveries to the victims' homes to surveilling them, making threats, and even creating Craigslist posts inviting sexual encounters at their residence.</p>

<p>eBay admitted to the orchestrated campaign and terminated all employees involved after an internal investigation.</p>

<p>The company, through an independent special committee, apologised to the victims and emphasised its commitment to high standards of conduct. eBay cooperated with law enforcement authorities throughout the investigation.</p>
