<p>Estrada debunked all the previous claims about the controversial artefacts captured by Peru’s customs agents and said in Friday’s press conference that those humanoid three-fingered creatures were just dolls.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After analysing the figures thoroughly, Estrada said they were found to be dolls consisting of earth-bound animal and human bones assembled with modern synthetic glue.&nbsp;</p>

Those who have promoted that have an economic interest, some other kind of interest," Estrada said. "What we have presented here is science, not pseudo-science."</p>

<p>Last year in September, a Mexican journalist and self-claimed “UFOlogist” Jamie Maussan brought some unidentified objects in front of the Mexican congress, claiming that they had been recovered near Peru’s ancient Nazca Lines and dated over 700 years old.</p>

<p>Maussan went in front of the Mexican Congress again in November, with a team of doctors confirming the bodies were of once-living organisms.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He was proven wrong on Friday when Estrada rejected all his claims. Though this isn’t the first time that Maussan has made such an otherworldly story, in 2017 as well, he made similar claims.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lake Tahoe's pristine shores witnessed an unwelcome scene as a winter storm deposited thousands of small plastic styrofoam beads. Originating from the remnants of a disintegrated floating dock, the beads posed a significant environmental threat to the popular Incline Village beaches. The storm's waves scattered the beads on the shoreline.</p>

<p>Clean Up the Lake, a local non-profit, led efforts to tackle the pollution with at least two dozen volunteers. The beads, believed to be expanded polystyrene, proved challenging due to their size and integration into sand and snow. Cleanup involved various tools, including pasta strainers, buckets, leaf blowers, and shop vacuums. Despite extensive efforts, only around 90 per cent&nbsp;of the beads were successfully removed, leaving thousands still embedded in the environment.</p>

<p>Italy on Friday (Jan 12) ruled against the extradition of a priest sought in Argentina on charges of murder and torture during the South American nation's last military dictatorship, the news agency Associated Press reported citing human rights advocates. In Oct last year, Italy's top criminal court approved the extradition of Rev. Franco Reverberi, who served as a military chaplain during Argentina's 1976-1983 military dictatorship.</p>

<p>However, Italian Justice Minister Carlo Nordio ruled against Reverberi's (86) extradition, citing his advanced age and poor health. As per Italy's justice system, the justice minister either abides by or rejects court decisions on extradition.</p>

<p>Speaking to the Associated Press, Jorge Ithurburu, who represents the March 24 human rights advocacy group that has followed the case, said that it would be up to Argentina to decide if it wants to challenge Nordio's decision by going to an Italian administrative court.</p>

<p>The Oct ruling by the Cassation upheld a previous decision by a lower court in Bologna to allow the extradition of the Reverberi. A hearing has been set for next week to formally relieve the 83-year-old priest of the sign-in obligation.</p>

<h2><strong>The charges against the priest</strong></h2>

<p>Argentina has been seeking Reverberi for trial on charges including the 1976 slaying of 22-year-old José Guillermo Berón and the torture of several other men. The torture took place in Argentina's Mendoza.</p>

<p>Reverberi had emigrated to Argentina from Italy when he was about seven&nbsp;years old. He left Argentina in 2011 after the first trial for crimes against humanity carried out during the dictatorship took place in the western Mendoza province. The testimonies of survivors and family members began to point to his responsibility (for the crimes).</p>

<p>Berlin would be able to intervene in the proceedings at The Hague in line with an article which allows states to seek clarification on the use of a multilateral convention. Hebestreit said Israel was “defending itself” after the “inhuman” attacks by Hamas on October 7.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“In view of Germany’s history, crimes against humanity, and Shoah the government is particularly committed to the UN Genocide Convention,” Hebestreit said.</p>

<p>He added, “The German government supports the International Court of Justice in its work, as it has done for many decades. The government intends to intervene as a third party in the main hearing.”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Who is Lai Ching-te?</strong></h2>

<p>Also widely known by his English name William, Lai Ching-te is a doctor by training. He is currently the vice president of Taiwan and will take office as president on May 20. Lai was born on Oct 6, 1959. He attended school in Taipei and completed his undergraduate studies (bachelor in science) at National Taiwan University’s Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.</p>

<p>Lai then did his post-graduate studies in Medical Science at National Cheng Kung University. He then obtained a Master of Public Health degree from Harvard University, making him one of the few physicians in Taiwan with rehabilitation, clinical care, and public health expertise.</p>

<p>"In 1994 when he was a chief resident at National Cheng Kung University Hospital, Taiwan was holding its first direct election for Taiwan provincial governor," according to <strong><a href="https://english.president.gov.tw/Page/543">Lai's official website</a></strong>.</p>

<h2><strong>His entry into politics</strong></h2>

<p>In 1996, Lai gave up his medical career and entered into politics during the Taiwan Strait Crisis. In 1998, he was elected to the Legislative Yuan representing Tainan City. Lai's website said that he was named "Best Legislator" by Citizen Congress Watch and led delegations to Japan and the United States to conduct parliamentary diplomacy.</p>

<p>He was the former mayor of Tainan in southern Taiwan and premier from 2017-19. Lai became vice president in 2020, becoming Tsai Ing-wen's (outgoing Taiwan president) running mate where they won a landslide victory after warning of the threat to Taiwan from China given Beijing's crackdown on anti-government protests in Hong Kong.</p>

<p>During this year's election campaign, Lai said that he would stick to Tsai's path of proffering talks with China and maintaining peace and the status quo, the news agency Reuters reported. The 64-year-old also pledged to defend Taiwan and reiterated only its people can decide the island's future.</p>

Lai's website said that he was named "Best Legislator" by Citizen Congress Watch and led delegations to Japan and the United States to conduct parliamentary diplomacy. He was the former mayor of Tainan in southern Taiwan and premier from 2017-19. Lai became vice president in 2020, becoming Tsai Ing-wen's (outgoing Taiwan president) running mate where they won a landslide victory after warning of the threat to Taiwan from China given Beijing's crackdown on anti-government protests in Hong Kong. During this year's election campaign, Lai said that he would stick to Tsai's path of proffering talks with China and maintaining peace and the status quo, the news agency Reuters reported. The 64-year-old also pledged to defend Taiwan and reiterated only its people can decide the island's future. (With inputs from agencies)
