In a major setback for the impeachment inquiry of Joe Biden being carried out by the House Republicans, Justice Department special counsel has indicted a former FBI informant for allegedly lying about the overseas business dealings of the US president and his son Hunter Biden.

Special Counsel David Weiss has charged 43-year-old Alexander Smirnov of giving&nbsp;false statements and making a fictitious record in what is called the “FBI 1023 report”, which is based on the false information provided to the investigators by him.

On Wednesday (Feb 14), Smirnov was arrested at a Nevada airport, stated the Justice Department.

As per a grand jury indictment, which was unsealed in the Central District of California, Smirnov allegedly spoke with his FBI handler in 2017 regarding Burisma Holdings Limited, which is a Ukrainian holding company where Hunter Biden was appointed on the board.

Three years later in June 2020, Smirnov allegedly informed the FBI regarding the two meetings held in 2015 or 2016 in which he claimed that he was informed about the company paying Hunter Biden to serve on Burisma's board so as to "protect us, through his dad, from all kinds of problems."

Smirnov later also informed the investigators that "they had specifically paid $5 million each to Public Official 1, when he was in office, and Businessperson 1 so that [Businessperson 1] will take care of all those issues through his dad," as per the charging documents.

The indictment fails to specifically identify President Biden as well as his son, however, the descriptions in court papers appear identical to their identities.

"The Defendant made these statements to the Handler in June 2020, when Public Official 1 was a candidate for President of the United States and the presumptive nominee of one of the two major political parties," alleged the indictment.

<h2 lang="en-US">Statements memorialised in FBI record form 'false'</h2>

According to the prosecutors, the two statements memorialised in an FBI record form, "were false, as the Defendant knew."

"No such statements were made to the Defendant because, in truth and fact, Defendant met with officials from Burisma for the first time in 2017, after Public Official 1 left office in January 2017, and after the then-Ukrainian Prosecutor General had been fired in February 2016," said the special counsel.

Till September 2023, Smirnov gave false statements to federal investigators and&nbsp;the indictment said that he, "repeated some of his false claims, changed his story&nbsp;as to other of his claims, and promoted a new false narrative after he said he met with Russian officials."

During the course of Trump's presidential campaign of 2016, at least 19 women alleged that Trump had made sexual advances towards them.

His legal team then reportedly set out to pay off all such women.

“I feel itchy eyes because there’s a lot of dust, and breathing isn’t easy," he further said.

At least 20 of Bangkok’s 50 districts were expected to have unhealthy levels of PM2.5 particles, according to local officials.&nbsp;

“I would like to ask for cooperation from the BMA (Bangkok Metropolitan Administration) network of about 151 companies and organisations, both government offices and the private sector,” said the governor, in a statement. More than 60,000 people were affected, according to Chadchart.&nbsp;

The statement also noted that some areas of the city had high levels of pollution and local authorities were ready to manage the situation.

However, for some working from home is not an option. Jarukit Singkomron, 57, a motorcycle taxi driver told AFP that despite his allergic reaction to the pollution he has to work or “I will starve.” He added, “People like me have to go out to make ends meet.”

<h2>Government’s plan to address the issue</h2>

Addressing the high levels of pollution, on Thursday, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin told reporters that crop burning was the main culprit behind the recent spike but also attributed around a quarter of the pollution to the vehicles, a factor “we can control”.&nbsp;

The PM also said that the local government, in the long run, should consider limits on vehicles powered by fossil fuels in Bangkok to curb pollution.&nbsp;

“We have a lot of problems with pollution at the moment, so we have to act immediately to reduce the effects on people,” said Srettha.&nbsp;

The drugs were supposed to be transferred from the Panama-flagged ship to a smaller vessel before heading to the Canary Islands. However, as the police prepared to intercept the “mothership”, officers learned about the hostage situation that had unfolded.&nbsp;

The Spanish police scrambled to get to the vessel at an undisclosed location in the Atlantic after they found out that “one member of the tugboat crew, of Serbian origin, had kidnapped the rest of the crew” said the interior ministry in a statement, adding that the priority was now protecting those who were being held hostage.&nbsp;

In order to take control of the vessel, the person who kidnapped the crew had reportedly fatally shot one of the men and thrown his body into the sea. Less than 12 hours later the police arrived near the vessel and what followed was hours of negotiations with the hostage taker on the high seas.&nbsp;

The kidnapper ended up surrendering his weapon and freed the crew “who feared for their lives,” said the statement. The incident occurred in November, but was kept under judicial secrecy until an investigation was completed, said Spain’s interior ministry, on Wednesday.&nbsp;

On Monday (Feb 12), Spain’s finance ministry said that the police had seized eight tonnes of cocaine hidden in a fake power generator in the southern port of Algeciras.&nbsp;

The haul of cocaine was inside a metal structure which was being transported from Suriname to Panama and then onwards to Algeciras, but was intercepted before making its way to Leixoes in Portugal.&nbsp;

The metal structure and the route were carefully chosen by the smugglers to avoid detection, said the Spanish officials. The victim’s long-time friend, Lisa Lopez (no relation) who is The Star’s newsroom executive administrative assistant, described her as the “most wonderful, beautiful person.”
