The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL)&nbsp;manufactured Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv operated by the IAF’s Sarang team was a part of the Singapore Airshow for the first time.&nbsp;

“The display is designed to highlight the ALH Dhruv’s agility and manoeuvrability, as well as the high degree of skills of the IAF pilots flying these machines,” said India’s ministry of defence in a statement.&nbsp;

<h2>China’s first homegrown airliner</h2>

China’s C919 airliner made its international debut, on Sunday (Feb 18) by staging a flyby at the Singapore Airshow. The aircraft, manufactured by the state-owned COMAC took to the skies last May and is seen as a prominent symbol of Beijing’s “Made in China” plan aimed at reducing reliance on foreign manufacturers.

COMAC also posted its first aircraft orders, on Tuesday morning, with China’s Tibet Airlines finalising an order for 40 C919 single-aisle planes and 10 ARJ21 regional jets. Additionally, China’s Henan Civil Aviation Development and Investment Group ordered 6 ARJ21s.

<h2>Russia out, Israel in</h2>

Russian companies such as Russian Helicopters and Irkut which had attended past airshows were not participating this year amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Real return to normal’</h2>

“We see 2024 as a real return to normal,” said Steven Townend, the CEO of Singapore-based aircraft lessor BOC Aviation. He added, “The industry is growing, airlines are making money again on a global basis. For 2024, we’re really positive.”

Notably, the airshow was the first one in six years unaffected by COVID-19 pandemic-related restrictions as the industry continued to grapple with a rebound in post-pandemic travel demand amid persistent supply chain issues.&nbsp;

Kansas City Shooting:&nbsp;Two suspects have been charged with murder over the shooting at the Super Bowl victory parade of the Kansas City Chiefs last week that led to the death of one person while wounding 22.&nbsp;

The two suspects identified as Dominic Miller and Lyndell Mays have been charged with second-degree murder,&nbsp;armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon, the authorities said on Tuesday (Feb 20). Miller and Mays were arrested in addition to two juveniles who were apprehended last week by the authorities.&nbsp;

Prosecutor Jean Peters Baker of Jackson County said Mays was the one who got into an argument at the event and drew out the handgun. Consequently, other people also drew guns during the incident, which included Miller who is believed to have shot and killed&nbsp;Lisa Lopez Galvan, 43, during the incident.

Galvan's family released a statement upon the pressing of charges over the teens and said they were thankful to the law enforcement agencies.&nbsp;

"Though it does not bring back our beloved Lisa, it is comforting to know that the Jackson County Prosecutor's Office and the KCPD made it a top priority to seek justice for Lisa, the other shooting victims," the family said in a statement.&nbsp;

Two dead in Israel strikes on Damascus neighbourhood in Syria

Ksenia Karelina, a model&nbsp;and ballet dancer, is the latest target on Kremlin’s radar. The 32-year-old with dual Russian-American citizenship was arrested by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) on Tuesday (Feb 20) on grounds of suspected fundraising for the Ukrainian Army.

The FSB did not disclose the woman's identity, but the independent Russian-language media outlet Mediazona identified the individual detained as Ksenia Karelina.

Karelina, a resident of Los Angeles was detained in Yekaterinburg, Urals in Russia on charges of “treason”, as per Politico.

The World Food Programme's (WFP) "live-saving" food deliveries to northern Gaza have been paused as the agency claimed that aid convoys had had to go through "complete chaos and violence due to the collapse of civil order" while making those deliveries.

The UN agency claimed that the decision was taken after&nbsp;their crews faced gunfire, looting and crowds.&nbsp;

The United Nations had&nbsp;earlier issued a warning against looming famine in the north of Gaza since December. According to WFP, the latest reports are a proof of "precipitous slide into hunger and disease".

The Israeli military had given orders for the evacuation of 1.1 million Palestinian civilians from all areas north of Wadi Gaza and asked them to find shelter in the south at the start when the ground offensive of Israel started in October.&nbsp;

A joint report issued by the WFP and the UN's children's agency UNICEF on Monday found that the the situation was "particularly extreme" in the north of Gaza.

Nutrition screenings conducted at shelters and health centres in the north found that more than 15% of children under two years of age were "acutely malnourished", the WFP said.

In the court filing, the federal prosecutors said that Alexander Smirnov accepted that he was arrested by "officials associated with Russian intelligence who were involved in passing a story" regarding President Biden's son, Hunter Biden.

On Tuesday (Feb 20), the Ministry of Defence seemingly confirmed the failed test&nbsp;saying an "anomaly" occurred during the firing of the&nbsp;'Trident 2' ballistic missile.

Notably, Defence Secretary&nbsp;Grant Shapps and&nbsp;First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Ben Key were on board HMS Vanguard when the nuclear missile failed to get going.&nbsp;

According to reports, the crew responsible for the launch in the nuclear sub completed the doomsday drill perfectly before the Trident 2 missile&nbsp;was propelled into the air by compressed gas in the launch tube. However, its first-stage boosters failed to ignite and the 58-tonne missile – fitted with dummy warheads – splashed into the ocean and sank.

According to a source, quoted as saying by The Sun, the missile left the submarine but "just went plop", right next to the vessel.&nbsp;

Britain's Trident nuclear missile test fails for the second time in a row

The east-bound commercial planes found themselves moving at&nbsp;supersonic speeds because of record-breaking wind which flew over the mid-Atlantic region this weekend.

According to the US National Weather Service, a Virgin Atlantic passenger plane - which was travelling from Washington to London - was pushed at a speed of nearly 1300kph (800mph), which is faster than the speed of sound, as per the US National Weather Service.

“This evening’s weather balloon launch detected the 2nd strongest upper-level wind recorded in local history going back to the mid-20th century,” stated the National Weather Service Baltimore/Washington, in the post on its official X account.

Two other passenger planes, which included one from New Jersey’s Newark Airport to Lisbon, Portugal, flew at a speed of 835mph.

<h2>Atlantic jet stream caused the sudden change&nbsp;</h2>

Even though the planes flew at speeds higher than that of sound, their sound barrier did not break as they were not travelling faster than sound relative to the air which had wrapped them in the jet stream.

The fast and narrow current of air which flows from west to east and encircles the globe is called the Atlantic jet stream and is generally used by aeroplanes which travel east from North America to cut down on their travel duration and use of fuel.

The current usually has winds which travel at speeds close to 110mph (177 kph), however, it is known to intensify sometimes, especially in winter months.

So far, there have been no reports of passengers facing difficulties when they were aboard these eastbound flights.

The family members of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ardent critic Alexei Navalny, who was found dead in a Russian prison, have been informed that the authorities will not release his body, as per reports.&nbsp;
