Former Prime Minister Kausea Natano lost his seat in a general election on Jan. 26 closely watched by Taiwan, China, the U.S. and Australia, amid a geopolitical tussle for influence in the South Pacific.

Tuvalu, with a population of about 11,200 spread across nine islands, is one of three remaining Pacific allies of Taiwan, after Nauru cut ties last month and switched to Beijing, which had promised more development help.

Tuvalu lawmaker Simon Kofe congratulated Teo in a social media post.

"It is the first time in our history that a Prime Minister has been nominated unopposed," he said.

Earlier Tuvalu election official, Tufoua Panapa, said only one nomination had been sent to the Governor General. He said the Governor General would make an announcement after a formal vote by the lawmakers on Monday morning.

Teo has worked as a senior regional fisheries official for the past decade as executive director of the Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission.

The election result in Tuvalu had been delayed by three weeks as dangerous weather stopped boats from bringing new lawmakers to the capital to vote for prime minister, highlighting why climate change is the top political issue in the Pacific Islands nation.

Taiwan previously said it was paying close attention to the election after Tuvalu's finance minister in the previous government, Seve Paeniu, said the issue of diplomatic recognition of Taiwan or China should be debated by the new government.

There had also been calls by some lawmakers to review a wide-ranging deal signed with Australia in November, that allows Canberra to vet Tuvalu's police, port and telecommunication cooperation with other nations, in return for a defence guarantee and allowing citizens threatened by rising seas to migrate.

A priest at the shrine named Naruhito Tsunoda stated that women were allowed to participate and that some had even made minor offerings as individuals previously. However, he said that when last year a women's group inquired if they could be a part of the event, saying 'yes' was easy.

"I believe the most important thing is for there to be a fun festival for everyone. I think God would be happiest about that too," he said.

The women, however, did not join the festival's main event where a large group of men clash together to drive away evil spirits.&nbsp;

Tsunoda stated that it would be tough for the authorities to open up that part of the festival to women considering the physical aspect.

In the year 2023, the Japanese government said that it would work on improving women's engagement in society after an annual report revealed that the country was struggling to narrow the gender gap. &nbsp;

The World Economic Forum report measuring gender parity ranked Japan at the 125th spot out of 146 countries in 2023, down from 116th in 2022.

This, it says, led to a fuel intake problem and subsequently the fatal crash that killed pilot Lance Maclean and co-pilot Dean Rushfeldt.

It also alleges that Brin intentionally delayed the recovery process.

The plane, a De Havilland DHC6-400 Twin Otter, took off from Santa Rosa, California, on May 20, 2023, bound for Fiji via Honolulu. Soon after takeoff, the pilots reported a fuel intake issue and attempted to turn back, but soon crashed into the sea.&nbsp;Efforts to recover the bodies have been unsuccessful.

Olarte Maclean reportedly wants to give her husband a "Christian burial with military honours". However, the extended delay in the recovery of the remains has made that impossible.

The lawsuit accuses Brin, his family office — Bayshore Global Management, and Google&nbsp;as the "owner/operators" of the aircraft, of making promises to recover the bodies but&nbsp;not fulfilling them.
