“As the LDP leader, I apologise from my heart that this fundraising issue has raised suspicion and caused distrust in politics among the people,” said the Japanese PM in his opening remarks.&nbsp;

While Kishida himself is not implicated, he said that he would not host any more fundraising parties during his term as the PM.&nbsp;

“It is my intention that I will not hold these parties during my time as prime minister,” Kishida told the committee.&nbsp;

He also vowed to revise the political funding law which holds those involved in the scandal – both accountants and lawmakers – to be held accountable for their finances.

Prosecutors in Japan have also launched a criminal investigation into the scandal.&nbsp;

<h2>Scandal affects Kishida’s popularity and country’s budget</h2>

A poll conducted in early February by NHK shows that support for Kishida (25 per cent) and his ruling LDP (30 per cent) dipped to its lowest point since the incumbent PM took office in 2021.

Nearly 3,000 forest fires were registered in the Brazilian Amazon this month, the highest for any February since records began in 1999, and made more likely by climate change, according to experts.

Brazil's INPE space research institute said Wednesday its satellites had picked up 2,940 fires so far this month, 67 percent more than the previous high of 1,761 recorded in February 2007 and four times more than in the same month last year.

"The climate factor certainly plays a fundamental role in this anomaly," Ane Alencar, scientific director of the IPAM Amazonia research institute, told AFP.

The northern part of the rainforest was hardest hit, particularly the state of Roraima, home to the Yanomami Indigenous reserve.

"We have seen the Earth break... temperature records. Every year is the hottest year and this has a synergy with climate phenomena" such as droughts, said Alencar.

Drought devastated the Brazilian Amazon between June and November last year, stoking huge fires, reducing or wiping out major water reserves, wreaking havoc with wildlife and affecting millions of people.

A study last month by the World Weather Attribution (WWA) said climate change was the main driver of the "exceptional drought" in the world's largest rainforest.&nbsp;

The WWA is a scientific project that seeks to quantify how climate change influences the intensity and likelihood of a particular extreme weather event.&nbsp;

Such environmental "stress," said Alencar, "generates all the necessary conditions for each fire to become a large fire," adding that some of the blazes may have been the result of forest clearing for agriculture.

The conservative-majority court weighed in on the case for the first time and scheduled arguments for the week of April 22. It added that&nbsp;Trump's federal election interference trial would remain on hold for now.

The court said it would address the question of whether a former prez has immunity from "criminal prosecution for conduct alleged to involve official acts" during their tenure in office.&nbsp;

The Republican leader had been scheduled to go on trial in Washington on March 4 for 'subverting the election' allegations. Joe Biden ultimately emerged victorious but not before Trump supporters across the country carried out mass protests, including the infamous breaching of Capitol Hill.&nbsp;

Trump welcomed the decision of the apex court and took to his social media platform to praise the bench.&nbsp;

"Without Presidential Immunity, a President will not be able to properly function, or make decisions, in the best interest of the United States of America," he said in a post on his Truth Social platform. "He must not be guided by the fear of retribution!"

A year ago, a passenger train from Athens to the northern city of Thessaloniki collided head-on with a freight train. The collision led to the death of 57 people, many of them young students returning home after a long weekend.&nbsp;

The collision, which many see as the result of government neglect of railway safety systems and protocols&nbsp;despite years of warnings from rail workers, led to days of mass and often <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/murderers-thousands-of-protesters-clash-with-police-across-greece-over-deadly-train-collision-568358">violent protests</a>.&nbsp;

Churches across the country rang their bells 57 times, on Wednesday to represent the number of those killed.&nbsp;

<h2>24-hour strike</h2>

The strike on Wednesday was called by Greece’s largest public-sector union ADEDY which represents around half a million workers.&nbsp;

However, over the day, many others, including students joined the march and wrote the names of the people who lost their lives in front of the heavily guarded parliament.&nbsp;

Brief clashes were also reported between police and protesters in Athens and during a similar protest in Thessaloniki. &nbsp;

The union workers, including air traffic controllers, taxi drivers and public transport workers, were also protesting against what they said were insufficient pay rises, the first after 14 years in the public sector.&nbsp;

They said that the increases were not enough to offset the impact of rising living costs and called for a 10 per cent across-the-board hike.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Day of pain’</h2>

“Today is a day of pain,” Antonis Psaropoulos, whose 19-year-old daughter Marthi died in the collision, told AFP. “For all of us, time stopped on February 28, 2023, a cursed day... a black hole in time,” Psaropoulos added.&nbsp;

A memorial service was also held at the crash site in the valley of Tempe, which is around 273 kilometres from Athens where grieving families of the victims and survivors left wreaths and flowers. “Fifty seven souls want justice,” read a placard at the ceremony.

<h2>‘National trauma’</h2>

The bells of every church in the country rang in the morning 57 times to mark this “national trauma” and “collective failure,” said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. “As a prime minister, as a citizen and as a father, I share the country’s grief.”&nbsp;
