The United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK) launched raids on Yemen's capital city of Sanaa and other areas, the news agency Reuters reported on Sunday (Nov 10) citing theAl Masirah TV, the main television news outlet run by the Houthi rebels.

About nine raidstargeted Sanaa, its suburbs and the Amran governorate."Eyewitnesses said they heard intense flying, along with explosions in different parts of the capital Sanaa," Al Masirah said.

Iran-aligned Houthi rebels have launched attacks on international shipping near Yemen since November last year, in solidarity with the Palestinians in Israel's war with Hamas that started on October 7, 2023.

The US and the UK have repeatedly struck Huthi targets in Yemen since January in response to attacks by the rebels on shipping in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Houthi leader criticises Trump for supporting Israel

These raids in Yemen came days after Houthis criticised US President-elect Donald Trump for supporting Israel.

On Thursday (Nov7), the group's leaderAbdul-Malik al-Houthi said that a series of normalisation deals between Arab countries and Israel brokered by the first Trump administration (which was in power in the US from 2017 to 2021)did not help bring the conflict closer to an end.

"Trump failed in the project of... 'the deal of the century' despite all his arrogance, haughtiness, recklessness and tyranny, and he will fail this time as well," Houthi said.

During his first term, Trump oversaw the establishment of diplomatic ties between Israel and Gulf countries- the United Arab Emirates(UAE) and Bahrain as well as Morocco.

Healso endorsed Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank and moved the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, claimed by both Israelis and Palestinians as a capital.

Trump defeated Democrat Kamala Harris in the November 5 presidential election in the US.

His victory came as West Asia has been in turmoil following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war, the Israel-Hezbollah conflict, and the ongoing tensions between Israel and Iran.
