Luca Parmitano: The Cosmonaut Who Nearly Drowned in Space

Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano experienced a life-threatening accident during a spacewalk in 2013. There was a water leak in his helmet which nearly cost him his life.

On July 16, 2013, Parmitano stepped outside the International Space Station (ISS) to perform a spacewalk that was supposed to last for 6.5 hours. He was joined by NASA astronaut Chris Cassidy and both were carrying out routine tasks outside the ISS. Approximately 45 minutes into the spacewalk, water began to accumulate inside Parmitano's helmet.

Parmitano told Mission Control about the water but he didn’t think it was a problem and Mission Control assumed that the water was coming from a leak in his In-Suit Drink Bag, which is inside the helmet. However, the situation worsened as the astronaut said that the amount of water increased and moved from the back of his head to his face and into his eyes, nose, and mouth.

The spacewalk was terminated and Parmitano and Cassidy were told to return to the airlock. But both were on the opposite sides of the ISS. What made matters worse was the Sun had just gone behind the Earth and it was dark.  Parmitano couldn't see but managed to reach the airlock with great difficulty. Finally, his helmet was removed and the ISS crew wiped about 1/3 gallon of water from his head and helmet.

March's astronomical spectacle starts with a rare glimpse of initially mistaken planet, 3 Juno. During this celestial alignment, Juno will be positioned opposite the Sun from Earth, making it easier to observe its reflective glow.

The solar minimum between Solar Cycle 24 and 25 happened in December 2019. The solar cycle is expected to continue till 2030. According to the US National Weather Service, solar maximum is expected in July 2025, with a peak of 115 sunspots.

According to NASA, every 11 years or so, the Sun's magnetic field completely flips. This means that the Sun's north and south poles switch places. Then it takes another 11 years for the poles to switch places again.

The solar cycle affects activity on the Sun's surface, such as sunspots that are caused by the Sun's magnetic fields. NASA states the beginning of a solar cycle is solar minimum (when the Sun has the least sunspots). Solar maximum happens when the Sun has the most sunspots.

The actual impact of the solar maximum of 2025 is not known. However, several reports have suggested that the heightened activity in the Sun could lead to radio and satellite blackouts. The solar maximum can also cause worldwide internet and power outages.

The Vikram Lander of Chandrayaan-3 space mission landed on the south pole of Moon in August 2023, a pitstop in the grand space vision Kalam put forth for ISRO.

In a 2003 speech to ISRO scientists, Kalam said: “I visualise a scene, in the year 2021, when I will be 90 years old and visiting the Sriharikota spaceport for boarding the space plane so that I can reach another planet and return safely as one of the passengers.”

Our home galaxy — the Milky Way will collide with its neighbour — the Andromeda galaxy in about 4 billion years, eventually becoming Milkomeda. Galaxy collisions are relatively common, considering that galaxies have long life spans.

The Milky Way-Andromeda collision is inevitable. According to Astronomy.com, the Andromeda is approaching the Milky Way at nearly a quarter million miles per hour.

Scientists have said that once the collision happens, the giant elliptical galaxy will be called "Milkdromeda" or "Milkomeda."

Several things will happen when the two galaxies collide. Both Milky Way and Andromeda each contain a central supermassive black hole. Following the collision, the black holes will spiral into one another and converge near the centre of Milkdromeda. Scientists have predicted a 50% chance that in the new galaxy, the solar system would be swept out three times farther from the galactic core than its current position.

When the collision happens, Earth would have become far too hot for liquid water to exist because of the gradually increasing luminosity of the Sun. All terrestrial life would end on our planet.

Astronomers for years have been looking for a planet that has similar characteristics to Earth. Several exoplanets have been discovered which might be habitable in future. Here's a look at five such exoplanets.

Located about 2,700 light-years from Earth, Kepler-69c is 70 per cent larger than our planet. According to NASA, astronomers are uncertain about the composition of this exoplanet, but its orbit of 242 days around a sun-like star resembles that of Venus. Kepler-69c's host star is about 80 per cent as luminous as the Sun, which means the exoplanet appears to be in the habitable zone.

Gliese 667 Cc, also referred to as GJ 667 C c, is a super Earth exoplanet that orbits an M-type star.  Its discovery was announced in 2013. Its mass is 3.8 Earths, and takes 28.1 days to complete one orbit of its star.

Proxima Centauri b is the closest known exoplanet to Earth- at four light-years. Its mass is 1.07 Earths, it takes 11.2 days to complete one orbit of its star. Although Proxima Centauri b can be found in the habitable zone of its star, the exoplanet is exposed to extreme ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

Kepler-62F is a super-Earth-size planet in the habitable zone of a star smaller and cooler than the sun, located about 1,200 light-years from Earth in the constellation Lyra. NASA has said that Kepler-62F orbits its host star every 267 days and is roughly 40 per cent larger than Earth in size.

Kepler-452b is the first near-Earth-size planet that orbits around a star the size of the Sun. The size of the orbit of Kepler-452b is nearly the same as that of the Earth at 1.05 AU. Kepler-452b orbits its star once every 385 days.

Researchers have developed rice grains with beef and cow fat cells grown inside them, creating a novel food product that could revolutionise sustainable food menus. Here’s all you need to know.

The experimental food was made by covering traditional rice grains in fish gelatin and seeding them with skeletal muscle and fat stem cells, which were then grown in the laboratory for nine to 11 days.

The rice grains, as per The Guardian report, contain meat and fat throughout, offering a blend of aromas including nuttiness and umami characteristic of meat, providing a pleasant and novel flavour experience.


Hybrid rice could make food production more sustainable, with significantly lower carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional beef production and for a more affordable price tag.


The researchers believe hybrid rice could improve emergency food supplies, serve as rations for astronauts and the military, and cater to different tastes and nutritional requirements by incorporating other types of meat or fish.

While some experts doubt the impact of the hybrid rice due to its low meat content, others see promise in its potential to provide animal nutrients with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and at a fraction of the cost.

American Physicist Explains Leading Theory

Will Kinney, a physicist at the University of Buffalo, said in his book (An Infinity of Worlds: Cosmic Inflation and the Beginning of the Universe) that before the Big Bang, the universe underwent a breathtaking cosmic expansion, doubling in size at least 80 times in a fraction of a second. Kinney said that this rapid inflation fueled by a mysterious form of energy that permeated empty space itself, left the universe desolate and cold. Over 5,000 'Confirmed' Exoplanets Discovered

The universe is enormous, with scientists estimating the presence of two trillion galaxies in it. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, houses billions of exoplanets. However, NASA has said more than 5,000 exoplanets have been discovered so far and are considered "confirmed."

NASA has said that there are thousands of other "candidate" exoplanet detections that require further observations to say for sure whether or not the exoplanet is real.

An exoplanet is any planet beyond our solar system. Most of the exoplanets orbit other stars. But, free-floating exoplanets, called rogue planets, orbit the galactic centre and are untethered to any star. Exoplanets were first discovered by scientists in the 1990s.

Exoplanets come in a wide variety of sizes, from gas giants larger than Jupiter to small, rocky planets about the size of Earth or Mars. The most common types of exoplanets are- Gas giants, Neptunian planets, Super-Earths and Terrestrial planets.

8 Fascinating Images Of First Untethered Spacewalk 


On February 3, 1984, 40 years ago, Space Shuttle Challenger embarked on its fourth mission where two NASA astronauts became the first to perform a spacewalk without the benefit of a tether.


The mission crew consisted of commander Vance Brand, pilot Robert Gibson (sitting up front), and mission specialists Robert Stewart, Ronald McNair, and Bruce McCandless II (back row).


Using Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) for the first time, Bruce McCandless ventured into the emptiness of space without any tether. Robert Gibson captured this iconic image which has become one of NASA's most requested photos. 

“It may have been one small step for Neil but it’s a heck of a big leap for me," quipped McCandless as he ventured in the vast emptiness of space, referring to Neil Armstrong's famous quote.


In this photo, McCandless can be seen taking a stroll along Challenger’s payload bay using Manipulator Foot Restraint (MFR) and Remote Manipulator System (RMS), together known as the “cherry picker".

Robert Stewart also tested out the MMU during the mission. The photo above shows the NASA astronaut gliding several feet above the Shuttle’s cargo bay.

Returning the favor, McCandless captured this stunning view of Challenger, showing the Shuttle from his perspective.

Challenger returned home on February 11, following a successful mission. However, NASA never deployed the tether-less system as it found better alternatives.

Gliese 436 b, also known as GJ 436 b, is a Neptune-sized exoplanet that is around 33 light years away from Earth. According to NASA, Gliese 436 b’s discovery was announced in 2004. The planet orbits an M-type star, and its mass is 22.1 Earths.

Gliese 436 b is Made of Excruciatingly Hot Ice. Researchers believe that the ice has been hardened by pressure rather than temperature. The planet’s temperature exceeds 526ºC (or 980ºF).

NASA has said that Gliese 436 b has more than 7,000 times less methane than it should, and it has a surprising abundance of carbon monoxide molecules.

Thousands of Stars, Galaxies and Black Holes Found

Astronomers unveiled the most detailed X-ray map of the universe. The map reveals the presence of over 700,000 monster black holes, 180,000 stars, and 12,000 clusters of galaxies.

Germany is behind the creation of the X-Ray map. The data was collected by the eRosita X-ray telescope on board the Spektrum-RG satellite during the first all-sky survey. The first eRosita All-Sky Survey Catalogue (eRASS1) is the largest collection of X-ray sources ever published, the Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science said in a statement.

A 6-Month Long Mission that Scanned the Universe

The eROSITA All-Sky Survey scanned the universe for six months- from Dec 12, 2019, to June 11, 2020. During this period, the mission detected more than 170 million X-ray photons in the sky, which astronomers later identified as roughly 900,000 distinct objects in space.

Reacting to the mission's findings, eROSITA principal investigator Andrea Merloni said, "These are mind-blowing numbers for X-ray astronomy." Merloni added, "We've detected more sources in 6 months than the big flagship missions XMM-Newton and Chandra have done in nearly 25 years of operation."

JWST Captures Staggering Structure in 19 Spiral Galaxies. Images Revealed



The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured breathtaking images of 19 nearby spiral galaxies. Near- and mid-infrared images show off every facet of these face-on spiral galaxies.

Webb’s NIRCam (Near-Infrared Camera) captured millions of stars in these images, which sparkle in blue tones. Some stars are spread throughout the spiral arms, but others are clumped tightly together in star clusters.

These 19 images are part of a large, long-standing project, the Physics at High Angular Resolution in Nearby GalaxieS (PHANGS) programme, which is supported by more than 150 astronomers worldwide.

Janice Lee, project scientist for strategic initiatives at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, said news images of the nearby galaxies were extraordinary. “They’re mind-blowing even for researchers who have studied these same galaxies for decades. Bubbles and filaments are resolved down to the smallest scales ever observed, and tell a story about the star formation cycle,” Lee said.

5 Brightest Comets Due to Glaze Up the Sky in 2024

The 144P/Kushida will reach its perihelion on January 25 and will be best seen in February with medium-sized binoculars.

The C/2021 S3 (PANSTARRS) is expected to reach its perihelion on February 14 and will potentially be visible with medium-size binoculars.

Comet 12P/Pons–Brooks (Comet Pons-Brooks)

The Comet 12P/Pons–Brooks will reach its perihelion on April 21. It will be visible to the naked eye before perihelion in the northern hemisphere and after perihelion in the southern hemisphere.

The Olbers comet reaches its perihelion on June 30 and will potentially be visible with small binoculars near the perihelion in June and July.

The C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan–ATLAS will reach its perihelion on September 27 and will be best seen in the southern hemisphere before perihelion, and the northern hemisphere after perihelion.

6 Upcoming Astronomical Events in February 2024

On February 2, planet Mercury will reach its aphelion, that is, it will be farthest from the Sun. This event will impact Mercury's orbital speed and slow it down.

On February 7, an 11 percent-illuminated Moon will be close to Venus. Both objects will be in the constellation Sagittarius and can be observed with the naked eye.

The New Moon will occur on February 9, at 22:59 GMT. At this point, the Moon's bright side will be facing away from the Earth and this will be the best time for stargazing because the Moon’s light won’t hinder the view.

On February 15, a 37 percent-illuminated Moon will be close to Jupiter. Both objects will be in the constellation Aries and can be observed with the naked eye or through a pair of binoculars.

On February 22, Venus will meet Mars in the constellation Capricornus. The planets will be clearly visible to the naked eye, but for a closer look, use a pair of binoculars.

The Full Snow Moon will occur on February 24, at 12:30 GMT. Our natural satellite will be in the constellation Leo and the lunar disk will appear full for one day before and after it.

Smaller, Cooler and Mysterious: What are Mini-Neptunes?

Four Warm Exoplanets Orbiting 4 Stars in Milky Way


In June 2023, the European Space Agency's (ESA) mission Cheops confirmed the existence of four warm exoplanets orbiting four stars in the Milky Way galaxy. These so-called mini-Neptunes were unlike any planet in the solar system and provided a "missing link" between Earth-like and Neptune-like planets that is not yet understood.

The ESA said that mini-Neptunes are among the most common types of exoplanets known, and astronomers are starting to find more orbiting bright stars.

More Difficult to Find than Hot Jupiter Exoplanets


Mini-Neptunes are smaller, cooler and mysterious objects. They are more difficult to find than the hot Jupiter exoplanets. Hot Jupiters have surface temperatures of over 1000 degrees Celsius while mini-Neptunes have cooler surface temperatures of 300 degrees Celsius, the ESA said.

Astronomers have predicted that mini-Neptunes have an iron-rocky core with thick outer layers of lighter material.

A First Look at NASA's Bennu Asteroid Sampler

High-Resolution Images Released after Delay

The high-resolution images of NASA's Bennu asteroid sampler have finally been released more than 3.5 months after the OSIRIS-REx spacecraft returned them to Earth. A report by ScienceAlert said the delay was due to two pesky fasteners that were holding the sampler lid in place.

Asteroid Material Untouched for Billions of Years

The asteroid material inside the sampler is thought to have remained untouched for 4.5 billion years, ScienceAlert reported.


With the problem now being solved, the curation team will remove the round metal collar and prepare the glovebox to transfer the remaining sample from the TAGSAM head into pie-wedge sample trays. These trays will be photographed before the sample is weighed, packaged, and stored at the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

WASP-96 b: A Planet with Sodium-Rich Atmosphere

A Hot, Puffy Gas Giant Located in Phoenix Constellation

An international team at NASA found that WASP-96 b is a world with a sodium-rich atmosphere. The planet is located nearly 1,150 light-years from Earth and orbits its star every 3.4 days. It is located in the southern-sky constellation Phoenix.

WASP-96 b is about half the mass of Jupiter. According to NASA, WASP-96 b is much puffier than any planet orbiting our Sun.

WASP-96 b's discovery was announced in 2014. Eight years later, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) captured the distinct signature of water, along with evidence of clouds and haze, in the atmosphere of the planet.

Rover Data Confirms Mars Was Once Warm and Wet 

Analysis of the data gained from NASA’s rover Perseverance has reconfirmed the theory that scientists have been insisting on for years: Mars was once a warm, wet planet that may have housed microbial life. 

The data confirmed the existence of ancient lake sediments on Mars, which were created by a large water body on the planet. 


The large basin of water most likely existed in Jerezo Crater, according to the detailed study published on Jan 26 in the journal Science Advances. 


The car-sized, six-wheeled rover scrurried the Martian surface through several months of 2022 and conducted several subsurface scans on its way from the floor of the crater to an adjacent expanse of braided, sedimentary-like features resembling the river deltas found on Earth. 


The layers inside the surface hinted at irrefutable evidence of soil sediments being carried there by its delta from a river that once fed it billions of years ago. 

Scientists estimated the sediments could have been formed some 3 billion years ago. 

Mars was once warm and wet, and it may have housed some form of life. This theory just got validated, once more.

HD 63433 d: An Earth-Sized Exoplanet with 'Lava Hemisphere'

Scientists have found a planet just 73 light years away from Earth. The planet, HD 63433 d, is the smallest and the closest discovered Earth-sized planet which is about 400 million years old.


HD 63433 d whips around its star on an extremely tight orbit, once every 4.2 days. The exoplanet is extremely hot- with dayside reaching temperatures of a whopping 1,257 degrees Celsius. Scientists behind this discovery think that the planet's dayside could be a "lava hemisphere."
