In microgravity, fluids in the body tend to redistribute and move upwards, even in the sinuses. This can cause congestion and a stuffy nose, similar to having a cold, which dulls the sense of taste and smell.

The sense of smell, which is closely linked to the perception of taste, is diminished in space due to nasal congestion. This results in a reduced ability to detect flavours and aromas, making food taste blander.

The controlled environment of a spacecraft has different humidity and air quality levels compared to Earth. These factors can affect how aromas are perceived, further impacting the taste experience.

Space food is often packaged in ways that ensure long shelf life and easy preparation, such as freeze-drying and vacuum-sealing. These preservation methods can alter the texture and flavour of food, making it taste blander than fresh food.

Astronauts have limited food options and must adhere to a specific diet that meets all nutritional requirements. The lack of variety and the necessity of consuming certain foods repeatedly can lead to food fatigue, making meals seem less appetizing and flavourful.

Microgravity Effects on Flavour Molecules

In microgravity, the behaviour of volatile compounds (responsible for aroma and flavour) can differ from their behaviour on Earth. These compounds may not reach the olfactory receptors in the same way, leading to a diminished sense of flavour.

Why does Food Taste Bland in Space?

This iconic photograph was captured by the Hubble Space Telescope. It shows the pillars as seen in visible light, capturing the multi-coloured glow of gas clouds, wispy tendrils of dark cosmic dust, and the rust-coloured elephants’ trunks of the nebula’s famous pillars.

An example of a very strange space phenomenon, this photograph shows a narrow galaxy elegantly curving around its spherical companion. The picture depicts GAL-CLUS-022058s, one of the most complete Einstein rings ever discovered in our Universe.

The Bubble Nebula, also known as NGC 7635, is an emission nebula located 8,000 light-years away. This image was observed by the Hubble Telescope to celebrate its 26th year in space.

Located nearly 70 million light-years from Earth, this galaxy is part of the constellation of Puppis in the southern hemisphere.

The belief that the Earth was the centre of the universe and all celestial bodies revolved around it was widely accepted until the heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus, and later supported by Galileo and Kepler, proved that the Earth orbits the Sun.

In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was believed that a substance called phlogiston was released during combustion. This theory was debunked by Antoine Lavoisier, who demonstrated that combustion is a chemical reaction involving oxygen.

The belief that living organisms could arise from non-living matter, such as maggots from decaying meat, was debunked by experiments conducted by Louis Pasteur, who demonstrated that life comes from pre-existing life.

Before the germ theory of disease was established, it was believed that diseases were caused by ‘bad air’ or miasma. This theory was replaced by the work of scientists like Louis Pasteur and Robert Koch, who showed that microorganisms cause diseases.

The belief that the universe was static and unchanging was widely held until Edwin Hubble’s observations in the 1920s showed that the universe was expanding, leading to the development of the Big Bang theory.

Ancient medicine was based on the belief that health was governed by the balance of four bodily humours: blood, phlegm, black bile, and yellow bile. This theory was replaced by modern medical science, which is based on cellular and molecular biology.

Facts about Alpha Centauri — The Star System Next Door

Alpha Centauri is a triple star system in the southern constellation of Centaurus. It is the closest star system to our solar system. One of its stars is the nearest star to Earth other than the Sun.

The nearest star Alpha Centauri that is closest to our planet is Proxima Centauri. It is 4.2 light-years away from Earth. The star has a mass of around 12.5% of the Sun. However, Proxima Centauri is around 33 times denser than the Sun, according to Star Facts.

Alpha Centauri is listed in Almagest, the star catalogue written by Ptolemy around A.D. 150. Although the star system was well documented in antiquity, it wasn’t until the late 1600s that astronomers began to notice that it was made up of multiple stars.

The Presence of Suspected Worlds in the System

Since Alpha Centauri is the closest system to Earth, it becomes an area of interest for an intense search of exoplanets. Astronomers have spotted several suspected worlds in the system, according to Space.com.

Sci-fi Inspired Spacesuit that can Turn Urine into Drinking Water

A sci-fi-inspired spacesuit, modelled on Dune's “stillsuits,” recycles urine into drinking water, enabling longer spacewalks on lunar missions.

The prototype collects and purifies urine, returning it as drinkable water within five minutes through a drinking tube.

Creators aim for deployment in NASA’s Artemis program by the end of the decade to support prolonged lunar expeditions.

Features include a vacuum-based external catheter and a forward-reverse osmosis unit, ensuring a continuous supply of potable water with multiple safety mechanisms.

Astronauts have only one litre of water for spacewalks, insufficient for planned 10 to 24-hour lunar missions, highlighting the need for this new system.

The system, compact and light enough to be carried on a spacesuit, addresses issues with the current waste management solution, the maximum absorbency garment (MAG).

Current MAGs are leak-prone and uncomfortable, causing astronauts to limit intake and risk UTIs, prompting the need for a better solution. The team plans to test the system for comfort and functionality with 100 volunteers in New York.

5 Little-Known Facts About the Human Brain

The brain accounts for about 2% of body weight but consumes roughly 20% of the body's energy. This means, on an average, your brain consumes about 400-500 calories daily.

Memories are not stored in one single part of the brain. Instead, the different areas of brain store different types of memory.

That immature guy you're hoping will mature with time, probably won't. The human brain continues to develop until around the age of 25, particularly in areas responsible for decision-making and impulse control.

While, the exact purpose of dreaming is still not fully understood, it is believed that dreaming plays a role in processing emotions, memory consolidation, and problem-solving.

Have you heard of people's personality changing after an accident? Well, the brain is a highly elastic organ. This means that if needed it can reorganise itself by forming new neural connections throughout life, especially after injury or learning new skills.

5 Little-Known Facts About the Human Brain

A lot of times people are hard to read and you can’t tell what they are thinking. However, there are some subconscious non-verbal cues which may help you understand their mind if you pay attention to them. Here are 5 psychological tricks that can help you read anyone:

To tell if the person is fake smiling or not, pay attention to wrinkles near the eyes. When someone is fake smiling their smile won’t reach their eyes.

While talking with someone, if the person mirrors your actions, it means they are interested and engaged in the conversation. For example, if you cross your arms, they may cross their arms too.

A person might be nodding too much when they are uninterested. It is because they are most likely not following what you are saying but pretending to pay attention.

If a person is looking upward and right, chances are they are lying. Looking towards the right signifies the imagination, while to the left represents that the speaker is recollecting memories or thoughts.

People clench their jaws when they are tense. It is a subconscious action that they do when they are thinking about something stressful.

The sport with the most medals being awarded at Paris 2024 will be aquatics with 49 events across the disciplines of swimming, marathon swimming, diving, water polo, and artistic swimming. Athletics follows closely with 48.

About 94 per cent of the Earth’s living beings exist inside the oceans. It is no surprise that most of the Earth’s surface is covered by water.

According to the National Ocean Service of the United States, we have explored less than five per cent of oceans on Earth, while the rest remains unexplored.

As per the World Register of Marine Species, there are 240,470 marine species known. However, it is only a small part of all the species that exist in the ocean, and new ones are being discovered every day.

There are lakes and rivers inside the ocean. This can happen when hydrogen sulfide combines with salt water and it becomes more dense than surrounding water.

The longest mountain range in the world, Mid-Ocean Ridge, is underwater. It spans about 65,000 kilometres beneath the ocean.

It is believed that about 70 to 80 per cent of the Earth’s oxygen is generated by marine plants, most of which are marine algae.

Space debris, or space junk, is artificial material that is orbiting Earth but is no longer functional. Most of the debris is in low Earth orbit (LEO). The debris can be as large as a rocket or as small as a chip.

According to NASA, most space debris is moving very fast and can reach speeds of 18,000 miles per hour, almost seven times faster than a bullet.

Due to the high speed and volume of debris in LEO, current and future space-based services, explorations, and operations pose a safety risk to people and property in space and on Earth, NASA says.

No International Laws to Clean Up the Junk

There are currently no international laws to clean up space debris in the LEO. “LEO is now viewed as the World’s largest garbage dump, and it’s expensive to remove space debris from LEO because the problem of space junk is huge — there are close to 6,000 tonnes of materials in low Earth orbit,” NASA says.

World Asteroid Day 2024: All You Need to Know in Detail

World Asteroid Day is a global awareness campaign observed annually on June 30. It aims to educate the public about asteroids, their potential risks, and the importance of planetary defence measures.

World Asteroid Day was established in 2014 by Dr. Brian May (astrophysicist and Queen guitarist), filmmaker Grig Richters, Apollo 9 astronaut Rusty Schweickart, and B612 Foundation president Danica Remy.

The chosen date commemorates the anniversary of the Tunguska event, a massive explosion caused by an asteroid or comet impact in Siberia on 30 June 30 1908. This is the most significant event on Earth in recorded history, highlighting the potential danger of near-Earth objects (NEOs).

The key goals of the day are to increase global awareness about asteroids and their potential impact on Earth and to encourage the development of policies and strategies for planetary defence.

Missions like NASA's OSIRIS-REx, which collected samples from the asteroid Bennu, and JAXA's Hayabusa2, which visited the asteroid Ryugu, have significantly advanced our understanding of asteroids.

There are currently over 34,000 pieces of space debris larger than 10 centimetres, millions of smaller pieces, and about 128 million pieces ranging from 1 millimetre to 1 centimetre in orbit around Earth.

Space junk originates from defunct satellites, spent rocket stages, fragments from collisions and explosions, paint flecks, and even tools lost during spacewalks.

Space agencies like NASA, ESA, and private organizations use radar and telescopes to track and catalogue space debris to prevent collisions with operational spacecraft.

Space junk travels at high speeds (up to 28,000 kilometres per hour), making even small pieces potentially catastrophic upon impact with active satellites or space stations.

The increasing density of space debris raises concerns about the Kessler Syndrome, a scenario where collisions create more debris, leading to a cascading effect that could render certain orbits unusable.

Various methods are being researched and tested to mitigate space debris, such as satellite deorbiting, space cleanup missions using nets or harpoons, and international guidelines to minimize debris creation.

Asteroid Day 2024: 5 Amazing & Mind blowing Facts About Asteroids

Here are five facts about asteroids that will blow your mind.

1. Billions of years ago, when the solar system was being formed, asteroids originated from leftover rubble and rocks. They have remained unchanged ever since.

2. An asteroid belt is present between Mars and Jupiter. Millions of asteroids of various sizes exist in this belt and circle the sun in elliptical orbits.

3. Asteroids occasionally cross paths, strike, or crash into planets while they orbit the sun. Some of them become moons after being drawn in by a planet's gravity. This is how several moons of Uranus, Neptune, Jupiter, Saturn and Mars originated.

4. A study conducted in 2013 revealed that asteroids can have rings around them, which are nothing but particles of dust circling them. Additionally, some asteroids have a tail-like extension formed due to collision with small asteroids.

5. Asteroids are rich in minerals and water. They have high amounts of carbon, silica and metals. Scientists say that some asteroids also have water-ice trapped in the rubble mass.

Few Facts to Know about the International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) is maintained in low Earth orbit by a collaboration of five space agencies and their contractors. The ISS is the largest space station ever built and here are a few facts about it.

Fact 1: ISS Continuously Occupied Since Late 2000

The ISS has been continuously occupied since November 2000. It was launched on November 20, 1998. An international crew of seven people live and work on the ISS.

The ISS circles Earth every 90 minutes at a speed of about 28,000 kilometres per hour. In 24 hours, the ISS travels about the distance it would take to go from Earth to the Moon and back.

According to NASA, the living and working space in the station is larger than a six-bedroom house. The station has six sleeping quarters, two bathrooms, a gym and a 360-degree view bay window.

More than 50 computers control the systems on the space station, and, more than 3 million lines of software code on the ground support more than 1.5 million lines of flight software code.

Strawberry Moon 2024: All You Need to Know About June's Full Moon

The Strawberry Moon in 2024 will occur on June 21. It will reach its peak fullness at 7:08 PM UTC.

The name Strawberry Moon originates from Native American tribes, particularly the Algonquin. It signifies the time of year when strawberries are ripe and ready for harvest.

In Europe, it is sometimes referred to as the Rose Moon or the Honey Moon. It reflects the seasonal bloom of roses and the traditional June weddings, which were often celebrated with honey-based beverages.

Strawberry Moon is generally lower in the sky during this time of year, casting a warm, amber hue due to its light passing through more of Earth's atmosphere.

In 2024, Strawberry Moon will be especially notable because it coincides closely with the summer solstice on June 20. This alignment makes it a significant event for stargazers.

The moon will appear full for about three days from Tuesday evening to Friday morning. Ideally, find a location with a clear view of the horizon, away from city lights, to fully appreciate the moon's beauty.

As of 2017, there are three species of Orangutans: Bornean, Sumatran, and the most recently confirmed Tapanuli. They are only found on the islands of Borneo and Sumatra and unfortunately, all three orangutan species are critically endangered.

The word orangutan comes from the Malay ‘orang’ for person and ‘hutan’ for forest and it translates to the ‘person of the forest’. The name is pretty on point considering we share 97 per cent of our DNA with this great ape.

Orangutans spend most of their time swinging on canopies and need vast stretches of forest to find enough food and mates. Therefore, deforestation and hunting are some of the biggest threats to orangutans.

Orangutans have an arm span of about 2.2 metres from fingertip to fingertip and considering they are just 1.5 metres tall, it is an impressive reach.

Orangutans like to be comfortable and build a sleeping platform or nest every night. It takes them around 10 minutes to create a structure by gathering several small and large branches and weaving them together. They sometimes also add a roof when it is raining.

Young orangutans learn everything from their mothers, including what to eat, and stay with them until the age of seven. Infants are also often seen clinging to their mothers and sleep in her nest until they develop their own skills to survive.

According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), orangutans are critically endangered, with a population of less than 105,000 in Borneo. The IUCN’s Red List had previously estimated that their population would decline to about 47,000 by next year as a result of human pressures and loss of habitat.

Our Galaxy Houses Planets Better Than Earth

There are a handful of exoplanets in the Milky Way galaxy that are thought to be better for life than here on Earth. KOI-5715.01 is one among them which can become our second home.

The Best Candidate for Superhabitable World

According to astronomy YouTuber Astrokobi, KOI-5715.01 is the best candidate for a superhabitable world. The planet is nearly 3,000 light-years away from Earth and twice the size of our planet.

An image taken by the Curiosity rover from the foothills of Mount Sharp showed the formation of rocks that NASA named gator-back rocks because of how they look.

According to AstroKobi, KOI-5715.01 orbits within its star's habitable zone meaning oceans of water could exist. Although its surface temperature is slightly colder than the Earth's average of 15 °C it may still have superhabitable conditions if it is experiencing a comparatively stronger greenhouse effect.

Jupiter: 7 Interesting Facts to Know About the Largest Planet in Our Solar System

Being the biggest planet, Jupiter has been named after the king of the ancient Roman gods.

Jupiter is more than twice as big as all other planets of Solar System combined, and 1321 Earths could easily fit inside a Jupiter-sized sphere.

One day on Jupiter is 9.93 hours long. However, one year is 11.86 Earth years.

Jupiter has 95 moons which are officially recognised by the International Astronomical Union.

Jupiter’s four largest moons – Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto – were first observed by the astronomer Galileo Galilei in 1610 and are also known as Galilean moons.

Notably, Saturn is not the only planet with rings in our solar system. Jupiter also has a faint four-part system of dusty rings, but they are not as visible as those around its neighbour Saturn.

Jupiter witnesses giant storms, powerful winds, aurorae, and extreme temperatures and pressures. It also has the Great Red Spot, a high-pressure storm that has been raging for several centuries.

Craters on Mars Named After Indian Towns and Cities

Indian Scientists recently discovered three new craters on Mars. Two of these have been named after towns in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh.

One crater is named in honour of the Indian geophysicist and Ahmedabad's Physical Research Laboratory director Devendra Lal.

The other two are called Mursan and Hilsa, based on towns in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Previously, three craters were named after Indian towns and cities; Poona, Lonar and Kakori.

After the scientists suggest the names for the craters, they have to be approved by a body at the International Astronomical Union. The Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature (WGPSN) is responsible for the same.

A few standardised rules need to be followed while naming the craters.

According to international regulations, craters with less than a diameter of 60 Km are named after towns with a population under 100,000.

According to NASA, more than 43,000 craters have a diameter greater than 5 km on the surface of Mars.
Out of these, the largest crater is the Hellas Planitia which has a diameter of about 1,400 miles (2,250 km).

Why Astronauts Cannot Use Pencil in Space?

Do you remember the scene from the movie 3 Idiots, where 'Virus' shows a pen to students, specially created by scientists with years of research to be used in space? To which 'Rancho' replied chucklingly, "why astronauts never thought of using a pencil instead?" Well, there are some valid reasons why astronauts cannot use pencils in space.

When pencils are used, they produce small particles like graphite shavings and broken pencil tips. In a microgravity environment, these particles can float around and potentially get into sensitive equipment or even astronauts' eyes and lungs, posing a hazard.

The graphite in pencils is a conductive material and can potentially short-circuit electrical equipment if it comes into contact with exposed circuitry. Moreover, wood shavings are flammable, which is a significant risk in the oxygen-rich atmosphere of a spacecraft.

Pencils can break easily, and the broken pieces can contribute to the debris problem. Mechanical pencils might mitigate some of these issues, but they still produce small graphite particles.

Pens designed for space, such as the Fisher Space Pen, are pressurised to work in zero gravity, underwater, and in extreme temperatures. They provide a more reliable writing instrument that doesn't produce floating debris and can function consistently in space.

The first Space Pen (also known as Zero Gravity Pen), was made by Fisher Space Pen Company. It is a pen that uses pressurised ink cartridges and is able to write in zero gravity, underwater, over wet and greasy paper, at any angle, and in a very wide range of temperatures.

The name Trevita is a Swedish acronym meaning “three whites” in English. Initially, it was planned to be launched as a three-piece limited edition but after facing incredible difficulty in production, the number of this car produced was limited to two. This limited-edition model costs $4.8 million.

"In space, no one can hear you scream"- This is a tagline from the 1979 movie Alien. This is 100 per cent true as there is no sound or echo in space. But why so?

Sound is a vibration that propagates as an acoustic wave through a transmission medium such as a gas, liquid or solid. Sound is carried by atoms and molecules. Astronomer Chris Impey says that in space, with no atoms or molecules to carry a sound wave, there is no sound.

Impey says that no sound also means no echo.

How Would Human Voices Sound in Neigbouring Planets?

Though hypothetical, our voice on Mars would sound tinny and hollow, like the sound of a piccolo, Impey says. On Venus, our voice would be much deeper, like the sound of a booming bass.

Why there's no sound in space

6 Upcoming Celestial Events in June 2024

June 2024 will feature several notable celestial events, providing opportunities to both casual stargazers and avid astronomers to enjoy the night sky. Here are some of the highlights:

A remarkable alignment of Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune will occur. These planets will appear close together in the sky, offering a spectacular sight, especially in areas with minimal light pollution.

Close Approach of Jupiter and Mercury - June 4

Jupiter and Mercury will be in close proximity, with a separation of only 0.07 degrees. This event will be visible to the naked eye, but binoculars or a small telescope will enhance the experience.

The New Moon will occur, making it an excellent time for stargazing since the absence of moonlight means darker skies.

The June solstice marks the start of astronomical summer in the Northern Hemisphere and winter in the Southern Hemisphere. It will occur at 20:51 GMT and is the longest day of the year for the Northern Hemisphere.

The Full Moon in June, known as the Strawberry Moon, will reach its peak at 01:08 GMT. This Full Moon will be in the constellation Sagittarius.

The Moon will pass very close to Saturn, and in some regions, it will occult the planet, meaning it will pass in front of and temporarily hide Saturn from view. This event is best observed with a telescope.

Saturn is the sixth planet in our solar system and the second-largest. Saturn is nearly the size of Jupiter but has less than one-third of its mass.

Saturn has an extensive ring system, and at least 146 moons orbit the planet. Saturn is the most aesthetically appealing planet in the solar system due to its rings. But what are the rings made of?

Saturn’s rings are made of billions of pieces of rocks, ice, and dust. Some of these particles are as small as a grain of salt, while others are as big as houses.

There are two theories about how Saturn’s rings formed. The first theory suggests that the rings are remnants of a destroyed moon of Saturn. But the second theory suggests that rings were left over from the original nebular material from which Saturn was formed.

What are Saturn’s Rings Made Of?
