January’s first full moon, known as Wolf Moon, will rise on Thursday (Jan 25) night at around 12:54 am. Wolf Moon is the name for the first full moon of the year.
The term wolf moon is used since US tribes used to believe that with its appearance wolves began to howl, due to their fascination with the moon.
As per the Almanac, wolf moon is also known as cold moon, severe moon, hard moon, Canada goose moon, great moon, spirit moon and greetings moon.
A full moon occurs when the moon appears as a fully illuminated circle in the sky, with its entire surface visible from Earth. This happens when the moon is directly opposite the sun with the Earth in the middle.
After Thursday’s wolf moon, the next full moon will be on February 24. It’s known as the snow moon due to the large snowfalls that often occur in February.
