Turkey Hit by Over 53,000 Earthquakes in 2025, Averaging 6 an Hour

Turkiye has recorded more than 53,000 earthquakes in 2025, averaging six tremors every hour, making it one of the country’s most seismically active years on record, according to experts and official data. While most earthquakes were minor, several were strong enough to cause structural damage. Balıkesir province saw unprecedented activity, including two magnitude 6.1 quakes, while a powerful 6.2 tremor off the coast of Istanbul renewed concerns about the safety of the megacity. Despite low casualties, experts warn that aging buildings, active fault lines and gaps in public preparedness leave Turkiye highly vulnerable. Calls are growing for faster urban transformation, stricter planning and nationwide disaster awareness training to reduce risks ahead of the next major quake.
