The Democratic Republic of the Congo, formerly known as Zaire, is Africa's second largest country. The central African nation, rich in valuable mineral resources, has been plagued by myriad armed groups in its east, fighting for control. Pre-eminent among these is M23, a largely Tutsi rebel group linked with the neighboring Rwanda, though Kigali denies the charge.
