Sri Lankan President Dissanayake Seeks IMF Deal Revisions, Eases Austerity

In his first meeting with the IMF in Colombo, newly elected Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, a self-avowed Marxist, advocated for tax cuts on lower-income groups. Having won the September 21 election, he pledged to reverse steep tax hikes, raise public servant salaries, and renegotiate the bailout secured by his predecessor, Ranil Wickremesinghe, while committing to continue the IMF's four-year reform programme.
