Putin Meets Syria's Sharaa as Russia Fights to Keep Military Bases

Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa is set to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow as the Kremlin seeks to secure its remaining military bases in Syria. With Bashar al-Assad now in exile in Russia and Moscow’s influence weakening after the 2024 upheaval, the talks come at a critical moment for both sides. Russia has already withdrawn from parts of northeast Syria, leaving only its Hmeimim airbase and Tartus naval port. At the same time, Sharaa is strengthening ties with the United States, with President Donald Trump publicly backing his leadership. The meeting highlights Syria’s shifting alliances, Russia’s struggle to maintain regional influence, and the growing role of Washington and Gulf powers in shaping the country’s future.
