In response to Trump's threats to restore US authority over the canal, Panama's President, Jose Raul Mulino, sought backing from other leaders to protect the country's strategic waterway. On Monday, Mulino met with three Panamanian leaders who, in a joint statement, reaffirmed Panama's sovereignty and independence of the canal.
