Great white sharks in the Mediterranean Sea are facing the threat of extinction, with illegal fishing and industrial activity driving rapid population declines. US scientists, in partnership with the UK’s Blue Marine Foundation, report that at least 40 great whites have been killed in North African ports in 2025 alone. These sharks are protected under international law, but footage and market observations reveal continued illegal trade. Researchers are now working to track the remaining sharks, highlighting the urgent need for conservation.
