The government plans to impose a 2.25% revenue levy on companies like Meta, Google, and TikTok unless they strike deals to compensate local news publishers.
Dubbed the “News Bargaining Incentive,” the proposal is designed to ensure tech platforms pay for the journalism they benefit from—while supporting a struggling media industry.
The draft legislation targets major platforms generating significant local revenue, signalling a renewed global push to regulate Big Tech’s relationship with news.
