The recent addition to Sony's audio portfolio is this affordable Bluetooth speaker which is portable and waterproof. Now remember, when I say waterproof, it means this speaker will survive if you dunk it in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes but why would you try that?

Instead, use the strap to attach the speaker to a bag and carry it to your next socially-distanced and safe vacation spot. And if you hang it from a height using the strap, you'll be able to modify the sound direction which is a nifty party trick.

Like me, if you have kids in the house who will squeal with excitement when they see the speaker and drop it the next second, worry not. This baby will survive a few falls.

Social media giant Facebook Inc's video-calling device Portal is getting a 'Harry Potter and the Cursed Child'&nbsp;crossover that will allow users to dress up as characters from the play using AR (augmented reality) technology.

The AR masks that transform users into a character and match their&nbsp;skin tone via&nbsp;real-time skin sampling&nbsp;before converting it into a seamless integration, as per 'The Verge'.

The feature is powered by Facebook's Spark AR technology and works with Portal-to-Portal video calls for users in the United States and Britain.

Anyone can use the new feature by tapping 'Curtain Call'&nbsp;in the effects tray on Portal. You can then select one of three locations from the menu to visit: Hogwarts Great Hall, the Ministry of Magic, or the Edge of the Forbidden Forest.

When the lights come up, each person on the call will embody a character from the show with a unique spell, which is assigned randomly. Simply nod your head or tap the screen to cast it and watch as your friends marvel at the magic.

Those capabilities include the ability for people to jointly see and interact with persistent shared virtual objects, like a virtual whiteboard on which they could collaborate, he said.

Many in the industry believe the glasses will eventually replace the functionality of mobile phones altogether, making their development a hotly contested race among tech giants like Apple, Amazon and Alphabet’s Google.

Snap Inc’s “Spectacles,” initially released in 2016, began incorporating AR elements in its third generation product last year.

Abrash said smart glasses would need to rely on devices like phones for the forseeable future due to constraints like battery life and the heat generated by processing.

But with “true AR glasses,” he said, other devices would become “an accessory to the glasses, because the glasses are how you see and interact with the world.”

President Joe Biden said on Tuesday the ransomware attack centered on the Florida information technology firm Kaseya seems to have inflicted only 'minimal damage' on American businesses. 
 
"It appears to have caused minimal damage to US&nbsp;businesses, but we're still gathering information," Biden told reporters following a briefing from advisers. 
 
"I feel good about our ability to be able to respond." 
 
Friday's ransomware attack scrambled the data of hundreds of small businesses worldwide, including many in the United States. REvil, a prolific, Russia-linked cybercrime syndicate, took credit for the breach. 
 
The president's comments follow a statement from Kaseya that the attack never posed a threat to critical US&nbsp;infrastructure, which Biden declared off-limits during a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin last month. 
 
But the attack was another illustration of how cybercriminals believed to be operating from Russia are running amok in the United States. Biden has sought to push Putin to bring Russian cybercriminals to heel, so far to little visible effect. 
 
Attacks have escalated recently. 
 
Last month REvil extorted an $11 million ransom out of meatpacker JBS after snarling its supply chain. In May, an intrusion by another Russia-linked group at major US&nbsp;fuel transporter Colonial Pipeline led to panic buying, price spikes, and gasoline shortages up and down the East Coast. 
 
The Republican National Committee said on Tuesday, it learned over the weekend that third-party provider Synnex Corp had been breached, but an investigation by Microsoft Corp determined that no RNC data had been accessed. 
 
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki said earlier on Tuesday that senior US&nbsp;officials would meet their Russian counterparts next week to discuss the ransomware menace. 
 
"If the Russian government cannot or will not take action against criminal actors residing in Russia, we will take action, or reserve the right to take action, on our own," she said. 
 
The Russian Embassy in Washington and the US&nbsp;National Security Council did not return messages seeking further details about the meeting. 
 
On Wednesday, Biden will meet with officials from the Justice Department, State Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the intelligence community to discuss ransomware and US&nbsp;efforts to counter it, Psaki said. 
 
The hack that struck Kaseya's clients, many of whom are back office IT shops commonly referred to as managed service providers, did not have the same kind of impact in the United States as the ransoming of Colonial Pipeline. 
 
Disruption elsewhere was more severe. 
 
In Sweden, many of the 800 grocery stores run by the Coop chain are still in the process of recovering from the attack, which knocked out most of its supermarkets, though a spokesman said, "we have more open stores than closed ones now." 
 
In New Zealand, 11 schools and several kindergartens were affected. 
 
Germany's cybersecurity watchdog, BSI, said on Tuesday that it was aware of three IT service providers in Germany that were affected, with a spokesperson estimating that several hundred companies were touched overall. 
 
"In Germany, there are no cases as prominent as the one in Sweden," the spokesperson added. 
 
The hackers, who claimed responsibility for the breach, have demanded $70 million to restore all the affected businesses' data, although they have indicated a willingness to temper their demands in private conversations with a cybersecurity expert. 
 
Kaseya's CEO said he would not reveal whether his company planned to pay the ransom or not, or even whether it was negotiating with REvil. 
 
Psaki said that while the administration discouraged such payments, questions about whether the data would be ransomed should be directed to Kaseya.

Chinese tech giant Tencent's WeChat social media platform has deleted dozens of LGBT accounts run by university students, saying some had broken rules on information on the internet, sparking fear of a crackdown on gay content online.

The WeChat pages&nbsp;of groups, including Huazhong University of Science and&nbsp;Technology&nbsp;Gay Pride and Peking University's ColorsWorld, had their past posts scrubbed and replaced with a notice stating: "all content has been blocked and the use of the account has been stopped" for violations of unspecified social media regulations.

The brief notices said WeChat had received "complaints" about the pages, while the groups' account names had been changed to "Unnamed Account" on Tuesday, based on&nbsp;publicly visible account records.

Super-app WeChat is China's biggest social media platform, with instant messaging, blogs, and other content, as well as the ability to make payments.

While homosexuality, which was classified as a mental disorder until 2001, is legal in&nbsp;China, same-sex marriage is not recognised. Social stigma and pressure still deter people from coming out.

This year, a court upheld a university's description of homosexuality as a "psychological disorder", ruling that it was not a factual error.&nbsp;

The LGBT community has repeatedly found itself falling foul of censors and the Cyberspace Administration of&nbsp;China&nbsp;recently pledged to clean up the internet to protect minors and crack down on social media groups deemed a "bad influence".

The Weibo social media platform, owned by Weibo Corp, has at times removed lesbian content and the online community board platform Zhihu has censored topics on gender and identity.

Last year,&nbsp;China's only pride festival was cancelled indefinitely after organisers cited concerns over staff safety.

"Authorities have been tightening the space available for LGBT advocacy and civil society generally. This is another turning of the&nbsp;screw,”&nbsp;said Darius Longarino, a senior fellow at Yale Law School's Paul Tsai's&nbsp;China&nbsp;Center, who focuses on LGBT rights and gender equality.

Chinese tech giant Tencent's WeChat social media platform has deleted dozens of LGBT accounts run by university students, saying some had broken rules on information on the internet, sparking fear of a crackdown on gay content online. The WeChat pages of groups, including Huazhong University of Science and Technology Gay Pride and Peking University's ColorsWorld, had their past posts scrubbed and replaced with a notice stating: "all content has been blocked and the use of the account has been stopped" for violations of unspecified social media regulations. The brief notices said WeChat had received "complaints" about the pages, while the groups' account names had been changed to "Unnamed Account" on Tuesday, based on publicly visible account records. Super-app WeChat is China's biggest social media platform, with instant messaging, blogs, and other content, as well as the ability to make payments. While homosexuality, which was classified as a mental disorder until 2001, is legal in China, same-sex marriage is not recognised. Social stigma and pressure still deter people from coming out. This is another turning of the screw,” said Darius Longarino, a senior fellow at Yale Law School's Paul Tsai's China Center, who focuses on LGBT rights and gender equality. A statement said the Pentagon would seek proposals from Amazon and Microsoft on a new contract, noting that the two vendors appear at the moment to be the only cloud service providers capable of meeting the department's requirements.

Amazon alleged it was shut out of the deal because of what it called Trump's vendetta against the company and its chief executive Jeff Bezos.&nbsp;

Sherman maintained that it was urgent to move ahead and that "the overriding factor is not what may have happened in previous administrations; what was said or not said, the litigation."

Amazon had been considered the lead contender to provide technology for JEDI, with Amazon Web Services dominating the cloud computing arena and the company already providing classified servers for other government agencies including the CIA.

Amazon argued in court documents that the Pentagon's choice of Microsoft was mystifying if not for Trump's repeated "expressed determination to, in the words of the president himself, 'screw Amazon.'"

US defense officials will reach out to Amazon and Microsoft to solicit bids for parts of the new cloud contract, which Sherman said will have an overall value in the billions, without specifying an amount.

"We understand and agree with the DoD's decision," Amazon said in response to an AFP inquiry.

"Unfortunately, the (JEDI) contract award was not based on the merits of the proposals and instead was the result of outside influence that has no place in government procurement."

Microsoft president of US regulated industries Toni Townes-Whitley said in a post that the technology giant "respects and accepts" the decision.

"The DoD faced a difficult choice: Continue with what could be a years-long litigation battle or find another path forward," Townes-Whitley said in a post.

"What matters now is the way forward."

The defense department move "ends a multi-year soap opera that has put the JEDI deal on pause," according to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives.

"For Microsoft this went from a lottery deal to a court nightmare with Amazon and others," Ives said.

"The cloud shift is not slowing down so the Pentagon had to make this move."

Amazon shares climbed nearly 5 percent in trading that followed the announcement, which comes as the head of the internet giant's cloud unit took over the role of chief executive from founder Jeff Bezos.

Defense officials planned to also reach out to Google, Oracle, IBM and other computing titans to assess whether they are will and able to enter the bidding for some of the jobs.

The department aimed to begin awarding contracts early next year with a hope of having systems starting to deploy by 2025.

Microsoft will be able to submit a bill to the government for terminating the JEDI contract, the amount of which has not been determined, according to Sherman.

One known case of this hack’s disruption spilling into the public domain was recorded in Sweden when grocery store chain Coop was forced to shut hundreds of its stores on Saturday after its cash registers were knocked offline after the attack.

The White House on Sunday said that it was reaching out to the victims of the hack in hopes of "providing assistance based upon an assessment of national risk". The intrusion’s impact is still being assessed.

Are you using an iPhone right now? It might be in your device’s best interests to be wary of certain wifi connections that could restrict certain functionalities.

A security researcher has discovered a vulnerability in iPhones' connectivity mechanism which could paralyse its wifi connectivity.

What is going on?

In June, Carl Schou found that when he attempted to connect to a wifi network called “%p%s%s%s%s%n”, his iPhone immediately lost the functionality to connect to any wifi connections.

But this had a quick fix. Schou was able to bypass the blockage by simply resetting all network settings.

What seemed to be the end of a weird chapter in iPhone connectivity issues has spiralled out of control. On July 4, Carl Schou gave it another try. He connected to a fishy sounding network called “%secretclub%power”.

It gets worse. If Schou is to be believed, being around a wifi connection with this name can permanently disable wifi functionality on your iPhone.

“You can permanently disable any iOS device’s WiFI by hosting a public WiFi named %secretclub%power,” Schou wrote on Twitter.&nbsp;“Resetting network settings is not guaranteed to restore functionality”, he added.

How do you regain functionality?

To Schou’s dismay, getting back wifi functionality wasn’t a cakewalk the second time around. Resetting network settings did not help, nor did a hard reset.&nbsp;

Eventually, he had to reach out to Apple. But before pursuing that, Twitter came to his rescue. A user advised Schou to manually edit his iPhone’s backup to remove malicious entries that were logged into the phone’s networks “plist files”.

Donald Trump's team launches Twitter-like social media platform GETTR

Hackers behind the mass attack which affected hundreds of companies on Friday have reportedly demanded $70 million to restore the data, according to a dark web posting.

Currently, the hacker groups is holding the data ransom and the demand was posted on a blog commonly used by REvil, a cybercrime gang linked to Russia.

REvil gang is considered one of the world’s most prolific extortionists. According to Reuters, the gang runs on an affiliate structure, which makes it difficult for analysts to decipher who represents the group.

On Friday, the hacking group broke into Kaseya, an information technology firm based out of Miami. They used the firm’s access to breach some of its clients’ clients. Quickly, a chain reaction was set off which paralysed hundreds of firms worldwide.

A Kaseya executive told Reuters that they were aware of the ransom demand, but did not add more. According to cybersecurity firm ESET, at least 12 different countries were affected by the hack.

One known case of this hack’s disruption spilling into the public domain was recorded in Sweden when grocery store chain Coop was forced to shut hundreds of its stories on Saturday after its cash registers were knocked offline after the attack.

The White House on Sunday said that it was reaching out the victims of the hack in hopes of “providing assistance based upon an assessment of national risk”. The intrusion’s impact is still being assessed.

Most organisations that were hit include schools, small public-sector bodies, credit unions, accountants, travel organisations etc, as reported by Reuters.

Last month, REvil attacked the systems of Brazilian meatpacker JBS, whose production was disrupted last month. Most hackers seeking ransom have favoured more focused takedowns against sole high-value targets. JBS claims that it ended up paying $11 million to the hackers.

Kaseya is an IT and security management services provider for small and media size businesses. This attack has come at a time when the US is heading towards the Independence Day holiday weekend.

The company used its official account on Reddit to inform its users about the breach and warn them to immediately shut down their systems.<o:p></o:p>

"We are in the process of investigating the root cause of the incident with an abundance of caution but we recommend that you immediately shutdown your VSA server until you receive further notice from us," Kaseya’s Reddit message read. "It's critical that you do this immediately because one of the first things the attacker does is shutoff administrative access to the VSA."<o:p></o:p>

Meanwhile, the US Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has assured that the officials are "taking action to understand and address the recent supply-chain ransomware attack" against Kaseya. CISA, too, recommended businesses to immediately shut down their software.<o:p></o:p>

China's cyberspace agency announced on Friday it had launched an investigation into Didi to protect national security and the public interest, just two days after the company began trading on the New York Stock Exchange. 
 
News of the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) probe, and the agency's decision to block Didi from registering new users during its investigation, knocked 5% off Beijing-based Didi's shares on Friday. 
 
"Like many overseas-listed Chinese companies, Didi stores all domestic user data at servers in China, it is absolutely not possible to pass data to the United States," Li said in a post on Weibo. 
 
Didi, which offers services in China and more than 15 international markets, gathers vast amounts of real-time mobility data every day. It uses some of the data for autonomous driving technologies and traffic analysis. 
 
Founded by Will Cheng in 2012, the company has already faced regulatory probes in China over safety and its operations licence.

The cyberspace agency did not give any indication of how the long the investigation would last or provide any other details.

"This test is part of our larger work to assess ways to provide resources and support to people on&nbsp;Facebook&nbsp;who may have engaged with or were exposed to extremist content, or may know someone who is at risk," said a&nbsp;Facebook&nbsp;spokesperson in an emailed statement. "We are partnering with NGOs and academic experts in this space and hope to have more to share in the future."

It said the efforts were part of its commitment to the Christchurch Call to Action, a campaign involving major tech platforms to counter violent extremist content online that was launched following a 2019 attack in New Zealand that was live-streamed on&nbsp;Facebook.

Facebook&nbsp;said in the test it was identifying both users who may have been exposed to rule-breaking extremist content and users who had previously been the subject of&nbsp;Facebook's enforcement.&nbsp;

The company, which has tightened its rules against violent and hate groups in recent years, said it does remove some content and accounts that violate its rules pro-actively before the material is seen by users, but that other content may be viewed before it is enforced against.

The second area of concern deals with reporting or flagging abuse. Here these companies have committed to giving users access to not merely flag content but also the ability to track and manage reports of their raised concerns. Another proposal is the ability to flag content based on the context and/or language used, which may change how content is perceived.&nbsp;

Australia's competition watchdog said on Thursday it issued draft proposals to authorise regional newspaper industry group, Country Press Australia, to negotiate with Google and Facebook for payments for news content on their platforms.

Country Press Australia (CPA) is seeking authorisation to allow its members to hammer out a payments deal with Google and Facebook for use of news content on the tech platforms, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) said.

CPA represents 81 news publishers that publish about 160 regional newspapers across the country.

"Allowing the publishers of 160 newspapers to collectively negotiate with Google and Facebook should help address some of the considerable bargaining power imbalance that exists between the digital giants and these local news outlets," ACCC Chairman Rod Sims said in a statement.

The proposed authorisation, which would expire after 10 years, follows an interim authorisation granted by the ACCC to CPA in April to commence the negotiations.

Earlier this year, Australia passed a law that mandated the US&nbsp;tech giants to pay media companies for news content on their platforms.
