Every year International Women’s Day is celebrated to bring the conversation about gender inequality to the forefront and to acknowledge the milestones that have been reached in the journey towards a more equal world. This year, the theme of International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias, but in the context of India, gender discrimination is a complex, sprawling problem that encompasses a skewed sex ratio, female infanticide, cultural preference for boys, early marriages, malnourished young mothers deprived of not just bodily autonomy but also the chance to seek higher education and gainful employment.

In rural areas, a widely prevalent notion considers daughters to be socially and economically disadvantageous. The point being, we will possibly need more than just a hashtag to break the bias against girls. And this bias begins its systematic dissemination of shame among young girls when they begin to step into adolescence. Misinformation about menstruation and other bodily changes makes them feel disempowered but this story can be changed via positive interventions at many levels.

The power of information

Anecdotal evidence during our work in the social sector encourages us to believe that there is an attitudinal shift in rural areas with adolescent girls negotiating with their parents to delay early marriages to be able to focus on their studies. This shift owes a lot to the outreach work done in the field of sex education by local schools, social organisations, and local health workers.&nbsp;

I cannot emphasise enough the importance of dispensing correct information about the physical, emotional, and psychological challenges of adolescence to the most underserved young people in the country. For young girls especially, this information can potentially make the difference between a life that offers them academic opportunities, adult choices, and reproductive health, and another that deprives them of even basic bodily autonomy. It is particularly important for them to understand the power of exercising choice, understanding the meaning of consent, setting boundaries, exploring sexuality in a healthy way, and getting adequate information, resources and support to improve reproductive health.

Getting past taboos and orthodoxy&nbsp;

Here it would be important to acknowledge that in orthodox and traditionally patriarchal cultures, educating daughters itself is a big step forward, and discussing sexual health with them is virtually unthinkable. During Covid-19, so many economically challenged families sought to marry off their daughters without comprehending that sending young girls unprepared into marriage will not only deprive them of healthy reproductive choices but also perpetuate the cycle of poverty, misinformation, and disempowerment. &nbsp;&nbsp;

In rural areas, SRH (sexual and reproductive health) information is tough to access and so young boys and girls rely on each other or unreliable sources like films and media to assuage their curiosity. The lack of accurate information regarding the reproductive process and their own bodies makes them feel frustrated and anxious. They feel reluctant to talk to their parents and often cause self harm through unhealthy choices. &nbsp;Girls especially cannot always talk to ASHA or Anganwadi workers because of the fear of speculation. At such a point, a school where a standardised sexual education curriculum is imparted by teachers and supported by counselors can inspire trust and allay fears. Even parents can be counselled by educators to discuss supposedly taboo subjects with their children.

Providing safe spaces

It is in schools that girls can find a safe space to get their queries answered. The supportive role social organisations play is also critical as was seen during the pandemic when all health centres focused their resources on COVID patients, and women and girls could not access hygiene products and contraceptives.

Together schools and social organisations can repair the broken rung of information that can help young girls better relate to their bodies, their gender, their sexuality, and the spectrum of choices available to them. When they understand themselves better and know that there need not be any shame attached to a natural process, they can have a healthier relationship with themselves and their partners in the future.&nbsp;

Decoding consent, boundaries, and risks

In rural areas, a lot of pressure is exercised upon young couples to prove their fertility and when boys and girls are well-informed, they can argue in favour of planned pregnancy and family planning with confidence. &nbsp;Also, be it pre or post-marital sex, young boys too need to grasp the meaning of consent and be taught to respect boundaries. Sex education hence is necessary to build an equitable relationship between both genders. It is so important to disseminate SRH information among the young considering more than half of the India population is under the age of 25. According to Unicef, India has the largest adolescent population in the world (253 million), and every fifth person is between 10 to 19 years. &nbsp;Multiple surveys of this demographic have indicated the dangers of unprotected sex, sexually transmitted diseases, unplanned pregnancies and hasty abortions.&nbsp;

A 2019 survey by Guttmacher Institute, New York reported that more than 75 percent of abortions among adolescents in India are unsafe. These could potentially even be fatal and we rank third as far as the number of HIV patients go. That the SRH curriculum is now mandatory in schools from 2018 is a good step towards systematically, sustainably and cost-effectively imparting potentially life-changing and life-saving knowledge to our young. &nbsp;

Such a long journey

It has taken us a while to get here though. In 2007, when the sex education curriculum was promoted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the backlash focused on how the youth could be corrupted, become promiscuous and lose traditional Indian values. Every time such resistance crops up, counselors can help parents understand how knowledge about bodily functions and boundaries can help protect their children and empower them rather than causing them harm. When they know more, they understand how to cope with mental health issues and have less anxiety as well.

Human-centered communication modules that make space for privacy and confidentiality, address cultural taboos with empathy and verifiable information, can lead to generational shifts that will have a huge impact on not just families but the nation.&nbsp;

Information is power and well-informed girls can play a big role in contributing to the health of the economy and of their families. According to unwomen.org, women make up more than two-thirds of the world's 796 million illiterate people. Just 39 percent of rural girls attend secondary school and unesco.org has noted that 11 million girls may not return to school post the pandemic in 2020. As the government and social agencies work towards getting more underserved girls in schools, there may come a time when the biases that come in the way of their progress will become easier to break.

Thappad: Domestic abuse is a topic which has been normalised in society and angry, egotistical men are considered to be perfect role models even in cinema. In such a scenario, Anubhav Sinha's 'Thappad' magnificently speaks on the behalf of the survivors and normalises a wife's refusal to take any version of domestic abuse in her stride. As she says in not so many words, "even if it is just a slap, he cannot hit me." The film underscores that it is not okay to remain quiet, even if it's "just a slap" because no one has a right to treat you inappropriately even if that someone happens to be a husband you are devoted to. &nbsp; Co-produced by Sinha and Bhushan Kumar of T-Series, 'Thappad' is a story about a woman's self-esteem. Taapsee Pannu sensitively etches &nbsp;the dilemma of a woman who has been slapped by her husband in front of countless guests &nbsp;and is still being gaslighted by her family to not take this as an affront to her dignity. And the film asks, why even today, we don't challenge the constructs of a patriarchal society where a man's ego is prioritised over a woman’s dignity.

Ajji: Rape continues to be an everyday headline in India and now barely evokes a response because it has been taken for granted that no woman is safe. The apathy towards gender crimes is even more disheartening when the truth is crystal clear, is not confronted and injustices continue to be perpetuated. 'Ajji'', a Yoodlee Films production and a Devashish Makjhija directorial shows how rotten the system is and how incapable of righting a grievous wrong. It depicts how society looks away if a heinous crime is committed by someone with power. The story revolves around an old woman who decides to not take this travesty in her stride when her granddaughter is raped by a local politician’s son and justice is denied. How she avenges this terrible crime is an eye opener because it reveals &nbsp;hard-hitting truths about the society we live in. Schools and their psycho-social interactions and spaces are an important part of young people’s lives. It is at school that they gain knowledge, learn behaviours and attitudes and develop as individuals into young adults. The school experience has a long-lasting impact on children’s physical, mental and emotional development and well-being. Safe and protected learning environments in schools are therefore vital for ensuring the health and well-being of children and young people.

However, evidence shows that across the world children experience physical, sexual and psychological violence in school settings. This includes teacher-perpetrated abuse, such as corporal punishment or sexual coercion; peer-perpetrated abuse, like bullying or discrimination; and with increasing exposure to the Internet and mobile technologies, many students are vulnerable to online child sexual exploitation and abuse (CSEA). Violence in school environment has the potential to prevent children, especially girls from exercising their right to a safe and inclusive education.&nbsp;

Globally, an estimated 246 million children experience violence in and around school every year, leading to compromised attendance, lower academic results and higher drop-out rates as per a UNESCO-UNGEI policy paper. According to data released by Plan International in 2013 , as quoted in the policy paper, more than 1 in 3 students between the ages of 13 and 15 worldwide experience bullying on a regular basis. Over half of all children worldwide live in countries where they are not legally protected from corporal punishment in schools, of which 45% live in South Asia. Students who experience bullying, a form of school-related gender-based violence (SRGBV), score lower in math and reading than those who do not. SRGBV is associated with the loss of 1 primary grade of schooling, translating to a yearly cost of around $17 billion to low and middle-income countries.&nbsp;

A study by the Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2007 found that just under 70 per cent of children (aged 5 to 18) in 13 states reported experiencing physical abuse (Kacker et al., 2007). A 2009-2010 study found that almost all children and young people experience corporal punishment in school (NCPCR, 2012). In fact, the scale and scope of SRGBV remains unclear due to a lack of comparable global data. Wider studies on school violence have focused on physical violence and bullying and have not necessarily looked at it from a gender perspective.&nbsp;

School-related gender-based violence cannot be seen in isolation from gender-based violence in wider society. Violence in schools reflects underlying social norms with regard to gender roles, authority and agency. Disturbingly, the regressive social norms and attitudes that justify violence continue to shape our children. They grow up witnessing violence within their communities, families and homes. &nbsp;India has a deeply hierarchical society where children in many school settings experience discrimination based on gender, caste, ethnicity, religion or socio-economic status. Evidence suggests that children from marginalized groups are often more vulnerable to school-based violence – both physically and psychologically. Witnessing or experiencing violence in the home drive children to believe violence is ‘normal’ and increases the risk of them bullying or perpetrating sexual violence in their own lives. Also experiences of violence at school are often linked with poverty, economic constraints and poor development that increase the risk of violence for many children.&nbsp;

Gender inequality and discrimination in broader context are reflected and reinforced in the school environment. Distorted notions of masculinity are associated with several forms of violence against children in school settings. School-related gender-based violence is complex and multifaceted, EFA GMR and UNGEI policy brief shows that “Girls also commit violent acts and boys also experience sexual abuse at school. Different forms of gender-based violence in schools overlap and reinforce each other.” Certain forms of violence are viewed as normal and a way to discipline the children. Silence towards violence permit the violence in schools to often go unreported. Due to cultural taboos and social stigma, children are reluctant to report the acts of violence.&nbsp;

SRGBV violates children’s fundamental rights and has wide-ranging consequences for their physical and emotional well-being, growth, school performance and attendance and the likelihood of them experiencing violence in future. The experience of violence leads to poor academic performance, school absenteeism and dropout among children. Children who have gone through abuse or bulling often experience low self-esteem and depression, which may lead to self-harm and risk-taking. Sexual violence not only has negative physical and emotional consequences, but also compromises educational progress and well-being for children.&nbsp;

India prohibited corporal punishment in 2009 and schools were provided with teacher guidelines to encourage ‘positive engagement’ with children. However, there is little evidence that suggests that these policy reforms have eliminated corporal punishment. A &nbsp;study carried out for Young Lives in Andhra Pradesh, where corporal punishment is banned, found that 82% of boys aged 7–8 and 72% of girls had experienced physical punishment in school. However, initiatives such as Gender Equity Movement in Schools (GEMS) program in schools in Jharkhand have shown some success in reducing SRGBV.&nbsp;

SRGBV needs to be addressed at a policy and implementation level, using a comprehensive, integrated, multi-sectoral and long-term approach. While government and civil society organizations can programmatically tackle the problem of school-related violence, interventions targeted at teachers and community members are also necessary. Social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) can be used effectively to address social norms that drive violence against children in general and education settings specifically. SBCC interventions can be used to address social norms that link masculinity to violence and the culture of silence that forces girls to accept and suffer it. Young girls and boys must be encouraged to speak up against violence in their own lives, families and communities. Finally, governments must focus on generating evidence on violence in educational settings to inform policies, programmes and strategies. The Education for All and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 will not be achieved without eliminating gender-based violence in schools.

Thousands took part in marches across the country on Monday calling for women's rights, but fake images of the events quickly went viral in deeply conservative Pakistan, appearing even on popular television shows.

In one clip, the sound was altered to suggest participants in Karachi were chanting blasphemous slogans against the Prophet Mohammed — an act which carries the death penalty in Pakistan.

Organisers in Karachi were threatened online, while more high-profile figures in Lahore said they had received "serious death threats" via email, telephone and in text messages.

They did not want to be named for fear of reprisal.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said the "deliberate, vicious campaign" amounted to "an incitement to violence".

The annual rallies calling for women's rights have received a fierce backlash since they first began in Karachi in 2018, including legal challenges to have them banned.

In a society where women have been shot, stabbed, stoned, set alight and strangled for damaging a family's "honour", supporters have been accused of promoting Western, liberal values and disrespecting religious and cultural sensitivities.

Last year, Islamist counter-protesters hurled stones at women as they marched through Islamabad.&nbsp;

A statement signed by feminist journalists and supporters condemned the "malicious circulation" of misinformation against the march, and warned that “using religion and accusing people of blasphemy has serious consequences."

A video of the song notched more than 12,000 views within hours of being posted online on Saturday, and Quintana hopes protesters will adopt it as their own. She also hopes its popularity will one day fade.

"We want it to be a song that hopefully won't stick around, that won't become popular every March 8," she said.

Wen also pointed out that the government had brought in a law to address domestic violence three years ago, although a majority of victims do not speak up as they consider domestic abuse to be a private matter.

She added, “It's great to see female-lead films be it in terms of female cast, female directors and female producers. These are exciting times for women in cinema and storytelling, perhaps the best we've ever seen in India. I hope in the years to come, across formats, more and more space is created for women to tell their stories, the way they want.”

Director of ‘Lipstick Under My Burkha’, Alankrita feels there is still a lot of work as “in terms of cinema, better representation of women behind the camera is needed. Having more female directors, cinematographers, writers, producers.... will result in the quality of films changing. We will start seeing a new narrative, newer points of view. Also the environment for women will become safer and more secure. More women on a set, will enable a far healthier work environment.”

She also spoke of #meToo movement that took the industry by a storm and said: “I also hope that the #metoo movement continues in spirit in terms of making people think twice before assaulting or exploiting somebody. And that women who call out offenders are safe, secure and continue to get work. The sexual offenders should be ostracized, not the ones who have suffered the assault.”

Alankrita’s latest offering is web series ‘Made in Heaven’ with Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti who wrote and created the show, while Akhtar, Nitya Mehra, Alankrita Shrivastava, and Prashant Nair served as directors for the nine-episode series.

There is a surge in women-led stories in Bollywood but while the female gaze has started to get a space, equal representation is still a distant dream, believe filmmakers Zoya Akhtar, Reema Kagti, Alankrita Shrivastava and Nitya Mehra.

The filmmakers, who worked on Amazon Prime Video's India original 'Made in Heaven', a show created, written and even directed by a team of women with the exception of Prashant Nair, who directed two episodes, believe the there is change but the odds are still stacked against women in the industry.

"There may have been a time when women weren't taken seriously but I haven't experienced that," Zoya, who has been receiving rave reviews for 'Gully Boy', told PTI.

She believes more than the gender of the maker, it's the kind of film one wants to make that matters.&nbsp;

"Notionally, as many people are not buying the tickets for a film with a female protagonist, making that is difficult. But every decade has had films which have been women-led and have broken the ceiling. Right now, every year women filmmakers are coming in, the gaze is changing," she says.

'Lipstick Under My Burkha'&nbsp;director Alankrita, however, says there is a system which isn't "inclusive of women" and statistically, they have only directed about six per cent of the films in the industry.&nbsp;

"Which is why I feel over the decades if you look at the history of popular culture, it is created by men, the point of view is male and even how the audience views it. They have been normalised into watching in a certain way," she says.&nbsp;

This systematic exclusion of women, Reema points out, can be seen even in the armed forces.&nbsp;

"It is a societal thing and it is across the world. It's a major problem but I think we are definitely changing."

Zoya, who has co-written her films with Reema, says the kind of absorption of "women storytellers that's happening in our industry is not happening in America."

"We are better off. I don't think producers today are saying 'Oh, she is a woman', I don't think that's happening," Zoya says.&nbsp;

Alankrita, however, believes it isn't largely true.&nbsp;

"I come from a much smaller cinema space and I think it is really tough. It is obvious that with a lot of women filmmakers, they might want to tell stories which are coming from their lived experiences. Often, women want to make films which are about women."&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

Alankrita says things change dramatically for a woman when she's directing a film.&nbsp;

"I feel where there is a lot of money involved, between a man and a woman, the traditional patriarchal set up tends to trust the guy more.

"When you have screening for exhibitors when you are trying to get shows for your film, there is not a single woman there. They don't understand what you are trying to make. I feel when there are fifty per cent filmmakers who are woman, the content is going to change dramatically."

What irks Alankrita is the feeling of being constantly judged by a system that is created by men, for men.&nbsp;

"It is a very macho-hero driven industry. The exhibition system is geared towards that, the star system, marketing of a film is driven by that. You are constantly fighting the odds and it is at every level."

Nitya, who assisted Ang Lee and Mira Nair before helming her debut 'Baar Baar Dekho', says a film set today has more women than before.&nbsp;

"When I was an AD and first came to Mumbai, I remember the number of women on a set, that was only for hair, makeup, wardrobe. That's it. Now when I go on a set, it gives me so much pleasure to see so many women working in various departments."

Reema says the times today reflect more inclusion and diversity for women and it isn't as gloomy as before.&nbsp;

WION: What does it mean for you to be a fighter?

Mary Kom: Since childhood I love sport. Every child loves to play. It&#39;s a huge thing for me to take up sports, specially boxing. My career starts from boxing. So, it does mean a lot for me. I have achieved everything through boxing.

WION: Who has been your biggest inspiration in your journey?

Mary Kom: My biggest inspiration is the legend Muhammed Ali. He inspired me to take up boxing.

WION: If you could have one dream fight with anyone who would it be?

Mary Kom: (laughs) Very difficult to decide who it will be - it can be woman or man - anybody who wants to fight with me just for fun will be welcomed.

WION: How do you balance your personal and professional life being a woman?

Mary Kom: Being a woman, I have to take up many roles &ndash; from being a mother to look after the family, being a boxer to maintain myself, another responsibility being a Member of Parliament - there are so many things in my personal life. There are different things to face in my life. The most is to maintain the performance because this is very important for me being a sportsperson. I have alredy achieved this level. And to maintain this high level is very very important.

WION: What do you want to be remembered for at the end of your career?

Mary Kom: It&#39;s not end yet actually &ndash; I&#39;m still continuing &ndash; but the biggest will be Olympics - if I win gold medal in Olympics. I want this to be remembered at the end.

WION: As a woman who has taken up so many roles, which of your roles is the most challenging - that of a boxer, a homemaker, a wife and mother or as a lawmaker in Rajya Sabha?

Mary Kom: I think every role is challenging. Being a woman, being a mother, being a sportsperson, being a Member of Parliament - all of these have been difficult. Handling all this all at once is challenging. We as a woman face a lot of difficulties.

WION: Since we are talking to an achiever on the occasion of Women&#39;s Day, do you feel we need more women lawmakers in India? Also, do you support implementation&nbsp; of 33 per cent reservation for women?

Mary Kom: If you ask me, yes we need to have more women lawmakers. Women are strong and must pursue their dreams at all cost. You may fail first, second or even the third time but if you show perseverance you will succeed one day. I have seen failure too. When I started boxing, nobody believed in me because I am a woman. They said boxing is a man&#39;s game. But see, how things have changed. Today many many more women are taking up this sport. I have taken criticism in my stride and fought to prove people wrong.

WION: You are eyeing the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. Where do you get the resolve from? What keeps you going?

Mary Kom: The resolve comes from sheer willpower. It comes from within. When we achieve people appreciate but when we don&#39;t a lot of flak comes our way. The idea is to remain positive. I always tell myself that if somebody can, I can too? I keep telling myself that I can do it. My biggest support comes from my husband. After my marriage things became complicated. But with my husband&#39;s support and my willpower I kept fighting and never once gave up. This is the only reason I could continue fighting with boxers younger than me and achieving my goals. It is important that my passion for the game stays alive in me. Whether you succeed or not you have to keep going. You cannot let the passion die. One day you will feel proud of what you have done and that will bring you the enormous joy.

WION: Can you share with us your future plans?

Mary Kom: There are so many things I want to do. I want to contribute to the youth, especially those in my profession I currently run my boxing academy. My academy looks after the needs of boxers who are not privileged enough to afford training. I have chosen some of the girls and post retirement I want to dedicate my time to bring up the next Mary Kom. I want to do more for my country.

Nearly 300 women ran through the streets of Iraq&#39;s Mosul on Thursday, in a demonstration of their freedoms eight months after the city was retaken from the Islamic State group.

Mosul&#39;s first ever women&#39;s marathon was held to coincide with International Women&#39;s Day.

The 900-metre run was not the length of a full marathon, but organiser Fatima Khalaf said it marked a real change for women in the city, who faced harsh restrictions under the hardline rule of the jihadists.

The race aimed to &quot;urge women and girls in the city to actively reclaim their rights,&quot; the 30-year-old said.

Trophy in hand, winner Najla Abdelhadi said she was &quot;very happy&quot;.

The 24-year-old sports education student said she her victory would &quot;send a message to the women of Mosul about the need to... take a step towards taking their rightful place in society&quot;.

Women lined either side of the street during the marathon, waving placards drawing attention to the harsh realities Iraqi women have faced.&nbsp;

During its three-year rule over nearly a third of Iraq, IS subjected hundreds of thousands of women to its rigid interpretation of Islam, using beatings and executions as punishments.

In Mosul and its surrounding province, jihadists raped, kidnapped and enslaved thousands of women and adolescent girls, especially those of the Yazidi ethnic minority.&nbsp;

The marathon was one of a series of events that have seen residents reclaim public spaces since Iraqi forces retook the city in July, including Valentine&#39;s Day market last month.

Soon after it assembled for the day, the Rajya Sabha held an hour-long discussion on women&#39;s issues in which members, cutting across party lines, voiced concern over the growing incidents of crimes against women, and made a strong case for early passage of the women&#39;s quota bill.

It was a rare occasion in the Upper House, which has been experiencing a washout of its proceedings due to protests over various issues since Monday, as members put their political affiliations behind to speak unitedly on the women&#39;s cause.

But as soon as this debate was over, members of some opposition parties, the TDP and others, trooped into the Well, carrying placards and raising slogans protesting over various issues like the banking scam and the Cauvery river water dispute.

This provoked Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu to make some angry remarks, which could not be heard in the din and then adjourning the House till 2 PM.

Earlier, the scenario was completely different as the House assembled at 11 AM and Naidu said the International Women&#39;s Day was being observed all over the world to celebrate the achievements of women as well as to renew the commitment to empowering them and ending gender biases.

&quot;With women constituting about 50 per cent of our population, social, economic and political empowerment of women, including providing reservation in Parliament and state legislatures, has to be accorded top priority for the country to achieve rapid progress,&quot; Naidu said.

He stressed the need to renew focus on gender equality and women&#39;s safety, besides efforts to educate and empower them.

After his remarks, women MPs from different parties began discussion on the issue and pressed for early passage of the women&#39;s quota bill. The bill has already been passed by the Rajya Sabha and is pending approval of the Lok Sabha.

Veteran Congress leader Ambika Soni said a resolution should be passed by the House to support the legislation providing reservation to women in Parliament and assemblies.

The leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad expressed concern over rising incidents of sexual assault against the girl child. &quot;The government, together with the opposition, should create an atmosphere to ensure the safety of women,&quot; he said and agreed with the others on the early passage of the bill.

External Affair Minister Sushma Swaraj said she favoured women&#39;s quota and continued to support it. Although women have excelled in many fields and entered areas so far dominated by men but were still &quot;continued to face injustice, which is shameful&quot;, she said and called for a mass movement to usher in a change of the mindset of the people towards women.

Naidu also agreed to a suggestion by some members to have a woman member in the panel for Vice Chairman panel.

However, the amiable atmosphere in the House was short- lived as slogan-shouting members from the opposition Congress as well some from the AIADMK trooped into the Well. Amid disruptions, the House could not take up the Question Hour and the Chairman adjourned the proceedings till 1400 hours.

Amid the din, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy (Trinamool Cong) wanted to raise a point of order but the members continued to raise slogans in the Well. The pandemonium led Deputy Chairman P J Kurien, who was in the Chair at that time, to adjourn the House for the day.
