The yellow phase three, which was activated on Sunday, stands for "intermediate to high activity" and is activated when the volcano shows "explosions of increasing intensity, expelling incandescent fragments".

The alert increase also means an elevated risk of spewing magma and "significant explosions of increasing intensity that shoot fragments (of rock) over considerable distances," according to civil protection coordinator Laura Velazquez.

The next step, which is a red alert, &nbsp;sets off mandatory evacuations.

Several cars in Catania city were covered in a layer of dark gritty dust, images in Italian media showed.

Mount Etna is Europe’s most active volcano. The last major eruption was in 1992.

In 2021, it erupted for several weeks within the six-month period of activity. As a result, the volcano’s height increased by 100ft because of the amount of volcanic material it spewed. The southeastern crater is now the tallest part of the volcano.

The volcano is in an almost constant state of activity and it’s considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Authorities in Guatemala scrambled to evacuate thousands&nbsp;of people after Central America's most active volcano, often known as the ‘Volcano of Fire’, erupted on Thursday (May 4). Firefighters said residents of the hamlet of Panimache were taken to shelters, reported the Associated Press.&nbsp; 
 
Civil protection official Oscar Cossio said 1,054 people had been evacuated from five communities near the foot of the volcano, and moved to a sports hall for shelter, reported news agency AFP. The number is said to increase&nbsp;as a full accounting of the evacuees was carried out, he added.&nbsp;

A civil protection official Rodolfo Garcia told AFP that had previously said some 350 residents were evacuated from communities near the foot of the volcano which was seen spewing thick clouds of ash over farms and towns not far from the capital city.

According to the country’s disaster agency, the volcano could affect as many as 100,000 people in communities around the peak. Red-hot rock and ash were seen flowing down the slopes toward an area devastated by a deadly 2018 eruption which killed nearly 200 people.&nbsp;

The Guatemalan Conred disaster centre has also said that the volcano named Fuego, Spanish for “fire,” was sending out “pyroclastic flows,” which is a high-temperature mix of gas, ash and rock fragments. The ash column ejected by Fuego reached more than 6,000 metres above sea level, reported AFP.&nbsp;

The ash, as per the disaster agency, is falling to the west and southwest of the volcano and stronger emissions could follow as the “high level” eruption continues. Furthermore, officials have also expressed concerns about the rainfall forecast which could lead to mudslides. According to Garcia, 13 emergency shelters had opened in four nearby towns, capable of providing refuge to 7,600 people.&nbsp;

However, the official also told AFP, that as many as 130,000 people live within areas exposed to falling ash which travelled as far as 100 kilometres from the crater. The transit police have also released photos showing autos and motorcycles stopped along highways to avoid getting bogged down in fallen ash, said the news agency.&nbsp;

When Fuego, the 3,763-metre tall volcano, erupted last December, it forced Guatemalan authorities to temporarily close the country’s largest airport.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the authorities, as per media reports, have also expressed concern over lahars, a mixture of ash, rock, mud and debris, that can bury entire towns. Lahars were flowing down four of the seven gullies on the volcano’s flanks, reported the AP, citing the country’s disaster agency.&nbsp;

The research concerned has been carried out by researchers from Washington University in St Louis. The data has been collected by NASA's Magellan spacecraft.

Paul Byrne, co-author of the study said the volcanic map was "the most comprehensive map of all volcanic edifices on Venus ever compiled". Byrne was quoted by Sky News.

He also said that the hot ash clouds reached as far as 19 km from the site of the eruption.

This comes after the island of Java witnessed a series of earthquakes&nbsp;on the west of the island. Semeru’s eruption in December last year had killed more than 50 people, left several missing, and thousands displaced.&nbsp;

The eruption devastated a large area of New Zealand's central North Island in a period before human habitation.

Scientists raise concern about the Taupo volcano in New Zealand

At least eight&nbsp;people have died while climbing the Klyuchevskaya Sopka volcano,&nbsp;Eurasia's highest active volcano,&nbsp;in eastern Russia's Kamchatka region.

The eight were among a crew of 12 people, including two guides, who on Tuesday set off to scale the 4,754-metre (15,597 ft) volcano. However, on Saturday, some of the group fell to their death at almost 4,200 meters, while the rest are stranded, Reuters reported citing local officials.

One of the guides reportedly broke his leg, while the condition of the remaining climbers is unknown. All of them are Russian nationals.

A search and rescue team was dispatched on Sunday, but strong winds prevented their helicopter from landing.

"They were scheduled to land at an altitude of 3,300 metres, but due to gale force winds at 30 metres per second (67 miles per hour), they failed to do so, although two attempts were made a few hours apart," the rescuers were quoted as saying.

A representative from the local civil defence authority, Tatyana Yukhmanova, told Reuters that the rescuers will try to reach the group again on Sunday provided the weather is conducive enough for a chopper to land.

"They were scheduled to land at an altitude of 3,300 metres, but due to gale force winds at 30 metres per second (67 miles per hour), they failed to do so, although two attempts were made a few hours apart," the rescuers were quoted as saying. A representative from the local civil defence authority, Tatyana Yukhmanova, told Reuters that the rescuers will try to reach the group again on Sunday provided the weather is conducive enough for a chopper to land. The Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) said on Wednesday (August 3) that a volcano has erupted on a mountain near Iceland's capital Reykjavik. Media reports stated that it is close to the country’s main airport. Live images on local media showed lava spewing out of a fissure.&nbsp;

The eruption took place approximately 40 kilometres from Reykjavik, where an eruption had taken place last year also. The Mount Fagradalsfjall volcano erupted for six months in March-September 2021. The site attracted tourists and experts to the scene.&nbsp;

IMO wrote on Twitter, "Eruption has started near Fagradalsfjall. The exact location has yet to be confirmed." IMO also noted that the size of the fissure is estimated to be about 300 meters. Further, it said the eruption started in the Meradalir valley, less than one kilometre from the scene of last year's eruption.&nbsp;

It is reported that since Saturday, about 10,000 earthquakes were, including two with a magnitude of at least 5.0.&nbsp;

The IMO said it was "possible that pollution can be detected due to the gas release" but so far there was no ash plume. In most cases, volcanic eruption leads to harmful gages, especially sulphur dioxide. Once they enter the atmosphere, such gases may pose a danger to health. They can even be fatal.&nbsp;

Icelandic foreign ministry said on Twitter: "Risk to populated areas and critical infrastructure is considered very low and there have been no disruptions to flights."&nbsp;
