<p>Former India opener and current Punjab mentor Virender Sehwag on Friday said that he would want a bowler to become Indian Cricket Team's captain after current skipper Virat Kohli.</p>

<p>Asked what he expects of Ravichandran Ashwin's captaincy for Punjab this season in IPL, Sehwag said, "I have played with him and I know the kind of mindset he has. He is the right choice to be captain of Punjab team. I am a great fan of a bowling captain. I watched Kapil Dev, Imran Khan, Wasim Akram as captains. In India generally you don't give captaincy to bowlers, but hopefully after Virat (Kohli) some bowler will become the captain (of national team)," he added.</p>

<p>Talking about the his franchise Sehwag said, "We have the best team, if I compare last ten years. The team is a balanced one with right mix of Indian and foreign players.</p>

<p>"We have a set of players who believe in dealing in sixes and boundaries, they don't believe in singles," Sehwag joked as Chris Gayle was seated next to him.</p>

<p>Asked if it is a challenge as a mentor to handle the junior and senior players, Sehwag said for him he treats all players at par -- be it Gayle or youngest domestic member Mayank Dagar.</p>

<p>"I make sure that everybody is comfortable and that they get their own space and do whatever they want to do, which later helps them in giving their 100 per cent. Off the field we are very cool, we make sure that our colleagues laugh and crack jokes," said Sehwag, whose designation is Director-Cricket Operations.</p>

<p>Key batsman K L Rahul said he was not looking at IPL as a platform to prove himself in a bid to cement his place in the national team.</p>

<p>The 25-year-old Rahul, who was bought for Rs 11 crore said his focus was to make sure that his team reaches the play-off stage first and then goes on to win the tournament.</p>

<p>"I take IPL as IPL and not a tournament where I have to showcase or prove anything to anybody. It is a new team for me and I want to contribute and make sure that our team reaches the play-offs in the tournament."&nbsphe said.</p>

<p>"With the kind of competition there is around, I don't think anybody in the Indian team is a sure shot. It's always going to be difficult, but that's the challenge you want to improve yourself as an individual and as a sportsman everyday."</p>

<p>Asked about additional responsibility of keeping wickets, he said, "It is going to be a little hard on the body as I don't keep regularly through the year, but as a player you want to be challenged every day. I have already been working on my wicket keeping".</p>

<p>Former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar has claimed that he lost his job as chairman of selectors for picking current skipper Virat Kohli over Tamil Nadu&rsquo;s domestic heavyweight S. Badrinath in 2008.</p>

<p>Vengsarkar said the then BCCI treasurer N. Srinivasan was allegedly not happy with the decision, which eventually led to his ouster as a selector.<br />

He said he was very keen on picking Kohli for the tour of Sri Lanka - who had led India to U-19 World Cup victory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recalling the instance at a public function Vengsarkar said, &ldquo;There was an Emerging Players tournament in Australia (for) youngsters &mdash; four A-teams were there &mdash; India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand. Me and my colleagues decided that we will take the U-23 boys and at that time we had won the U-19 World Cup, Virat Kohli was the U-19 captain and I selected him in the team.&rdquo;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Vengsarkar also alleged that then captain M.S. Dhoni and coach Gary Kirsten were also sceptical about the selection.</p>

<p>&quot;He (Kohli) was technically sound and I thought he should be played. We were going to Sri Lanka and I felt that this is the ideal situation that he should be in the team. My four colleagues said &lsquo;As you say Dilip Bhai&rsquo;,&rdquo; he said, referring to the other members of the selection panel.</p>

<p>&ldquo;However, Gary and Dhoni were saying &lsquo;No, we haven&rsquo;t seen him and we will continue with the same team&rsquo;. I told them &lsquo;You haven&rsquo;t seen him but I have seen and we have to take this boy&rsquo;,&rdquo; Vengsarkar said.</p>

<p>The former captain alleged that he sensed some uneasiness with Kohli&rsquo;s selection as Badrinath played IPL for Chennai Super Kings, which was then owned by erstwhile secretary Srinivasan.</p>

<p>&ldquo;I knew there was South&rsquo;s Badrinath, who was playing for N. Srinivasan&rsquo;s CSK. When Kohli was preferred over Badrinath, Srinivasan was not happy. He got fed up as his player was kept out and he questioned me as to how I didn&rsquo;t pick Badri? I replied that I had gone to watch the Emerging Tour in Australia and found this boy Kohli exceptional.</p>

<p>&ldquo;So I have picked him in the team and Srinivasan reasoned that Badrinath had scored 800 runs for Tamil Nadu. I told him he will get a chance and an angry Srinivasan asked &ldquo;when he will get a chance, he is 29-years-old? I replied: &lsquo;Whenever the time comes&rsquo;.&rdquo;</p>

<p>Vengsarkar claimed that soon after, he was replaced by Kris Srikkanth as chairman of selectors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&ldquo;Srinivasan then made Srikkanth the chairman and I was sent home. That was the end of my career as a selector.&rdquo;</p>

<p>BCCI on Wednesday announced the Annual Player Contracts for the period from October 2017 to September 2018, with the introduction of a new category A+ for the men&#39;s cricket team and Category C&nbsp;for Senior Women.</p>

<p>The Committee of Administrators (CoA) had a meeting in Mumbai on February 27 where this decision was taken.&nbsp;</p>

<p>MS Dhoni did not get the Grade A+ contract, which was given to Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah.</p>

BCCI announces new pay contracts; MS Dhoni not in top group, Mohammed Shami gets nothing

<p>The favourite topic of debate for Indians since Virat Kohli broke big on the Indian cricket scene has been whether he is better than Sachin Tendulkar. The mere mention of this topic has resulted into fistfights among cricket aficionados and broken many life-long friendships.</p>

<p>Recently, Kohli added another feather in his cap by winning the elusive ODI trophy in South Africa, something which Indian cricket fans have been craving since time immemorial. It wouldn&#39;t be wrong to say that Kohli was the main difference between the two teams and probably won India the series through his couple of match-winning knocks. This series hasn&#39;t been an exception in Kohli&#39;s career. He has done this for India time and again.</p>

<p>But go back a few years and the man entrusted with the same task was Sachin Tendulkar. For almost two decades, Sachin was the main pillar of the Indian batting line-up, so much so that watching a cricket match meant watching Sachin bat and a century from him brought more joy than the team winning the match.</p>

<p>Millennials says that Kohli doesn&#39;t exactly inspire the same awe or stirs the same emotions. But they ask how many matches did Sachin exactly win for India? A lot of his ODI centuries came in the losing cause.</p>

<p>Almost everyone has chosen a side religiously in the Sachin-Kohli debate, but there is one thing that everybody agrees to and that is both these legends can bring the time to a standstill and unite the entire nation.</p>

<p>The streets went empty when Sachin used to bat and now people put down their phones to watch Kohli break records. Just like this analogy, Sachin and Virat used to play in very different eras and that is what makes it hard to compare them.</p>

<p><strong>Pitches and boundary line:</strong> Over the past few years, cricket has gone through a lot of transformation. The game has evolved and it is now more suited for the batsmen. Also, it has become a lot more commercialised. Advertisers want more fours and sixes to be hit so that they can brand them. Broadcasters want whole 50 overs to be played so that they drive more revenues. Audiences want a high adrenaline pumping match that goes till the last ball.</p>

<p>This has resulted into pitches being tailor-made for the batsmen and shorter boundaries. Batsmen can score more easily and hitting every other ball for a six is a no big deal anymore. Not taking away anything from Kohli for sending the ball to the park with an unmatchable frequency, but this wasn&#39;t the case when Sachin used to play. The boundaries used to be longer and pitches were made to ensure an even contest between bat and ball. Also consider the size of the bats that were used. The bats today are designed to facilitate thrashing of the ball. Kohli has this advantage as well.</p>

<p>Irrespective of this, Sachin had one the best strike rates among his contemporaries and the calibre to hit almost any bowler of repute out of the park. It was a rarity back then.</p>

<p>Kohli too does this but just that there are a lot of others who do it. In the world of T20 cricket, ability to hit the ball for a six is no longer a rarity but a pre requisite.</p>

<p><strong>Bowlers:</strong> Sachin played against the most formidable bowlers in the cricket history. From Wasim Akram to Glenn McGrath, he has scored against them all. During his career, almost each and every team had a deadly pace attack and ace spinners. Sachin has faced the likes of Alan Donald, Jason Gillespie, Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, Shane Warne, Murlitharan and Shoaib Akhtar. The current crop of bowlers, barring a few, are merely the shadow of their predecessors. This makes Sachin&#39;s knocks all the more valuable.</p>

<p>But at the same time, let&#39;s take into account that Kohli is scoring at a pace that is faster than his contemporaries. Kohli has hit almost all bowlers easily and that is a feat which his competition, Steve Smith, hasn&#39;t been able to do. He has scored consistently in all conditions and against all bowlers wherein batsmen like Rohit Sharma and AB De Villiers have struggled.</p>

<p><strong>Batting line-up:</strong> For most of his cricket career, team India was overtly dependent on Sachin. He never really played freely till the mid-2000s. Opposition only had to get Sachin out to win the match. Sachin was always under pressure to perform and in most cases he used to outscore the entire team.</p>

<p>Kohli has had the cushion since inception to play in a team which has been the best batting squad in the world. He has rubbed shoulders with players like Virendra Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to name a few. For most part of his career, he has been able to express himself freely and play without the fear of team only being dependent on him.</p>

<p>But this in no way means that Kohli doesn&#39;t have the ability to carry the entire weight of the team on his shoulders. He is perfectly capable of leading India to the victory and has demonstrated that multiple times in the past.</p>

<p>Irrespective of all the analysis, there is only one thing that we can agree upon. There can be no comparison between two great cricketers of different era. You cannot compare Virat Kohli to Sachin Tendulkar, just like you cannot compare Sachin Tendulkar to Sunil Gavaskar. Opinion: 3 reasons why Sachin Tendulkar cannot be compared to Virat Kohli

<p>The Nidahas T20I Tri-Series &ndash; involving hosts Sri Lanka, along with India and Bangladesh &ndash; is going to be interesting for the Indian team. After all, it is after a long time that team India would be without a majority of their star players in an international series. The selectors have rested captain Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav for this series &ndash; all of who have been stars for India in the limited overs format in recent times. It will be intriguing to see how team India does about things without so many of their regular members.</p>

<p>While India, who is ranked No.3 in T20Is, may have fielded their second string unit for this tri-series, it gives a great opportunity for the team management to test their bench strength. All-rounders Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar and Washington Sundar, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant have all been included in this series. While these players may not have much international exposure, they have done well in the domestic scene and particularly well in the IPL. This series will give us an idea of who among the young Turks have a future for the country and can be seen as a viable option for the ICC World Cup 2019 squad.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among the new lot, it would be Rishabh Pant who will be in under most focus. He is considered as the next big thing of Indian cricket and with the prolific form he has shown in the domestic arena, he surely deserves chances here. Mohammed Siraj is also an exciting prospect with his ability to bowl fast and accurate produce swinging yorkers at the death.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Another one to watch out would be KL Rahul who returns to the fold after some time. The talented Indian batsman has not got many chances of late as the two Indian openers have been doing really well. But Rahul has shown that he can bat anywhere and in the absence of Kohli, he should get a spot in the middle-order to bolster it. Rahul had smashed 61 and 89 against Sri Lanka in December last year at home in the three-match T20I series and would relish having another go at them.</p>

<p>Stand-in captain Rohit Sharma should be quietly confident even though he is coming off a rather mediocre tour to South Africa. Rohit excels in these conditions and simply loves batting against Sri Lanka. He had slammed that sensational 118 off 43 balls in the T20 series against Sri Lanka in December and has already amassed 278 runs in 11 innings against them at a splendid strike-rate of 146.31.</p>

The Nidahas T20I Tri-Series – involving hosts Sri Lanka, along with India and Bangladesh – is going to be interesting for the Indian team. After all, it is after a long time that team India would be without a majority of their star players in an international series. The selectors have rested captain Virat Kohli, MS Dhoni, Jasprit Bumrah, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Hardik Pandya and Kuldeep Yadav for this series – all of who have been stars for India in the limited overs format in recent times. It will be intriguing to see how team India does about things without so many of their regular members. While India, who is ranked No.3 in T20Is, may have fielded their second string unit for this tri-series, it gives a great opportunity for the team management to test their bench strength. All-rounders Deepak Hooda, Vijay Shankar and Washington Sundar, fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant have all been included in this series. While these players may not have much international exposure, they have done well in the domestic scene and particularly well in the IPL. This series will give us an idea of who among the young Turks have a future for the country and can be seen as a viable option for the ICC World Cup 2019 squad. Among the new lot, it would be Rishabh Pant who will be in under most focus. He is considered as the next big thing of Indian cricket and with the prolific form he has shown in the domestic arena, he surely deserves chances here. Mohammed Siraj is also an exciting prospect with his ability to bowl fast and accurate produce swinging yorkers at the death. Another one to watch out would be KL Rahul who returns to the fold after some time. The talented Indian batsman has not got many chances of late as the two Indian openers have been doing really well. But Rahul has shown that he can bat anywhere and in the absence of Kohli, he should get a spot in the middle-order to bolster it. Rahul had smashed 61 and 89 against Sri Lanka in December last year at home in the three-match T20I series and would relish having another go at them. Stand-in captain Rohit Sharma should be quietly confident even though he is coming off a rather mediocre tour to South Africa. Rohit excels in these conditions and simply loves batting against Sri Lanka. He had slammed that sensational 118 off 43 balls in the T20 series against Sri Lanka in December and has already amassed 278 runs in 11 innings against them at a splendid strike-rate of 146.31. Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri, who has always commended Virat Kohli irrespective of his poor form, on Monday compared the skipper&#39;s playing ability with Pakistan&#39;s World Cup winning captain Imran Khan.</p>

<p>Shastri lauded Virat&#39;s form in the recently-concluded South Africa tour saying, he has created a niche for himself in cricket and is already there among the very best in the world.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;It&#39;s still early days for Virat. He is still very very young. But he is already there among the very best. He wants to lead by example. He reminds me a lot of Imran,&quot; Shastri said in an interview.&nbsp;</p>

<p>&quot;He is still very young but he has got lot of qualities that Imran had when it came to leading a side. Which is great,&quot; he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kohli, who is ranked as No. 1 batsman in one-day internationals, was in imperious form against the Proteas becoming the first batsman ever to score 500 or more runs in a bilateral ODI series.</p>

<p>Kohli&#39;s six innings in the ODI series were - 112, 46 not-out, 160 not out, 75, 36 and 129 not out.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On being asked about the similarities between Imran and Kohli, Shastri said both players have the desire to be on the top and the infectious energy level they both possess made him draw the comparison.</p>

<p>Out of the national team reckoning for a while now, India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh says he will continue playing cricket till 2019 before taking a call on his retirement.</p>

<p>Yuvraj, who last played for India in June 2017 in an ODI, said the upcoming IPL holds great significance for him as a good performance in the T20 event will help him keep in the fray for a spot in the 2019 World Cup.</p>

<p>&quot;I am looking forward to a good IPL. It&#39;s a very important tournament for me as it will only set me to play cricket till 2019. I am looking to play cricket till 2019, whatever cricket I get to play and take a call after that,&quot; Yuvraj told PTI in an exclusive interview on the sidelines of the 18th Laureus World Sports Awards in Monaco.</p>

<p>A regular in the Indian ODI team till the 2011 World Cup triumph before his career was jeopardised by a rare germ cell cancer, Yuvraj&#39;s only regret was that he could not cement his place in the Indian Test side.</p>

<p>&quot;Definitely, in the first 6-7 years of my career when I was at my best I did not get a lot of opportunities because there were such great players in the (Test) team and when I got an opportunity I was diagnosed with cancer. So that regret will always be there but these things are never in my control. I am just looking forward to whatever cricket I get to play,&quot; the 36-year-old all-rounder said.</p>

<p>Yuvraj, who is here as a Laureus ambassador from India, praised Virat Kohli and his men for the character they showed to bounce back in the limited overs series after the close 1-2 loss in the Test rubber.</p>

<p>After having lost the Test series 2-1, Team India have staged a remarkable turnaround to win both the ODI and T20I series and will now leave the South African shores with their heads held high and with hopes of a better tomorrow on future overseas tours.</p>

<p>India was asked to bat first yet again on a slowish sort of a surface and courtesy contrasting 40s from Suresh Raina and Shikhar Dhawan and a cameo at the end by Hardik Pandya, the visitors were able to post a decent 172-7.</p>

<p>It wasn&rsquo;t a daunting total by any means but the Indian seam bowlers, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, began beautifully. They bowled nagging lines and in the first 6 overs, South Africa could only manage 25-1. They were always behind after that and looked certain for a heavy defeat after being reduced to 114-5 in 16.3 overs with all the big names back in the hut. However, a brilliant 49 off 24 balls by debutant Christiaan Jonker pulled things back for the Proteas. He smashed 5 fours and 2 sixes and brought South Africa within striking distance. Despite this stunning effort, however, South Africa could not manage to seal the game as Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar held their nerves to hold the surge. Jonker fell on the last ball of the innings and gave India a famous T20I victory.</p>

<p>What was laudable about India&rsquo;s performance was that they did not let the intensity dip. On such a long away tour, by the time the last games arrives, the visiting teams generally are so exhausted that they simply go through the motions. But this Indian team has shown that they are different. They have the gumption to fight and never give up, come what may. They showed that in the Test series after losing the first two Tests and coming back hard to clinch the last Test in emphatic fashion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>No one expected India to stage such an incredible performance in the limited overs series to follow. But led by a determined captain Virat Kohli and an exceptional show by the bowlers, India pegged the hosts back and achieved series victories in both the ODIs and the T20Is.</p>

<p>Another thing to note here is that Team India wasn&rsquo;t even at its best. Their middle-order has some serious issues and needs to be sorted out in earnest. But despite their flaws, India stuck together and played as a complete unit. This holds them in good stead for the 2019 World Cup.</p>

<p>For South Africa, a lot of questions need answering. Their bench strength isn&rsquo;t strong enough and they are too reliant on their previous stars to bail them out. The selectors and the team management have to work closely together and sort a cohesive plan to brood the team for the World Cup next year.</p>

<p>All in all, this was an entertaining and memorable tour for Team India. Never before has a visiting Indian side to South Africa returned with so much success. Virat Kohli and his men deserve all the accolades coming their way and should pat themselves on the back for this commanding performance.&nbsp;</p>

Jonker fell on the last ball of the innings and gave India a famous T20I victory. What was laudable about India’s performance was that they did not let the intensity dip. On such a long away tour, by the time the last games arrives, the visiting teams generally are so exhausted that they simply go through the motions. But this Indian team has shown that they are different. They have the gumption to fight and never give up, come what may. They showed that in the Test series after losing the first two Tests and coming back hard to clinch the last Test in emphatic fashion. No one expected India to stage such an incredible performance in the limited overs series to follow. But led by a determined captain Virat Kohli and an exceptional show by the bowlers, India pegged the hosts back and achieved series victories in both the ODIs and the T20Is. Another thing to note here is that Team India wasn’t even at its best. Their middle-order has some serious issues and needs to be sorted out in earnest. But despite their flaws, India stuck together and played as a complete unit. This holds them in good stead for the 2019 World Cup. For South Africa, a lot of questions need answering. Their bench strength isn’t strong enough and they are too reliant on their previous stars to bail them out. The selectors and the team management have to work closely together and sort a cohesive plan to brood the team for the World Cup next year. All in all, this was an entertaining and memorable tour for Team India. Never before has a visiting Indian side to South Africa returned with so much success. Virat Kohli and his men deserve all the accolades coming their way and should pat themselves on the back for this commanding performance.
