Amid soaring gas prices, US President Joe Biden will reportedly pay a visit to the Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman who was once shunned by the president as a killer.

According to AP news agency, the White House is working out a plan to have a one-on-one meeting between Biden and the Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar,&nbsp;Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates) as well as Egypt, Iraq and Jordan.

However, no official trips have been made about the trip.

The trip is being tentatively planned after a G7 summit in Germany and a NATO meeting in Spain and would also include a visit to Israel, in which Biden would meet Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Reuters reported quoting official sources.

The US leader had blamed Prince Mohammed for the 2018 killing and dismemberment of US-based journalist Jamal Khashoggi, a newspaper critic of the crown prince.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre on Wednesday declined to comment on whether Biden will travel to Saudi Arabia. She said that she had no trips to preview and that Biden stood by his earlier opinions of the crown prince.

US President Joe Biden planning to visit Gulf countries amid soaring gas prices: Report

In what can be called a discourteous way to say goodbye to US President Joe Biden, North Korea fired not one, not two but three ballistic missiles towards the sea off its east coast on Wednesday, media reports said citing South Korean military. The missiles were launched just hours after the US president left Asia. The launch was its first in about two weeks. The country has been launching numerous missiles since the beginning of the year. This was the 17th round of missile firings by the nation this year. &nbsp;

In the trip, Biden had agreed to take measures to deter the country. The missile launches were carried out in the space of around an hour from the Sunan area of the capital Pyongyang of North Korea, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said. &nbsp;

At least two launches were reported by the Japan's coast guard. The missiles seem to have fallen outside exclusive economic zone (EEZ) of Japan, broadcaster NHK said. When Biden was visiting South Korea, he had brushed aside queries regarding any possible provocation by North Korea during the trip. Biden had said, “We are prepared for anything North Korea does." &nbsp;

Before the launch, US State Department spokesperson Ned Price told reporters in Washington that North Korea may carry out a major weapons test. A presidential advisory commission has unanimously voted to recommend US President Joe Biden to process all applications for green cards or permanent residency within six months, a proposal if adopted is likely to bring cheers to the hundreds and thousands of Indian-Americans including those waiting for it for decades.

A Green Card, known officially as a Permanent Resident Card, is a document issued to immigrants to the US as evidence that the bearer has been granted the privilege of residing permanently in the US.

Indian IT professionals, most of whom are highly skilled and come to the US mainly on the H-1B work visas, are the worst sufferers of the current immigration system which imposes a seven per cent per country quota on allotment of the coveted Green Card or permanent legal residency.

The recommendations of the President's Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (PACAANHPI) are to be sent to the White House now for approval.

If adopted, it is is likely to bring cheers to the hundreds and thousands of Indian-Americans and those waiting, some even for decades, for a Green Card.

A proposal on the issue was moved by eminent Indian-American community leader Ajay Jain Bhutoria during the meeting of the PACAANHPI, during which all its 25 commissioners unanimously approved it.

The proceedings of the meeting here in the national capital were webcast live last week.

To reduce the pending Green Card backlog, the advisory commission recommended the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to review their processes, systems and policies and establish new internal cycle time goals by streamlining processes, removing redundant steps if any, automating any manual approvals, improving their internal dashboards and reporting system and enhancing policies.

The recommendations aim to reduce the cycle time for processing all forms related to family-based Green Card applications, DACA renewals and all other Green Card applications within six months and issue adjudicate decisions within six months of applications received by it.

The commission recommended National Visa Center (NVC) State Department facility to hire additional officers to increase their capacity to process Green Card applications interviews by 100 per cent in three months from August 2022, and to increase Green Card Card applications visa interviews and adjudicate decisions by 150 per cent up from capacity of 32,439 in April 2022 by April 2023.

Thereafter Green Card visa interviews and visa processing timeline should be a maximum of six months, it said.
Aimed at making it easier for the immigrants to stay and work in the country, the commission recommended that the USCIS should review requests for work permits, travel documents and temporary status extensions or changes within three months and adjudicate decisions.

Only 65,452 family preference green cards were issued in fiscal 2021 out of the annual 226,000 green cards available, leaving hundreds of thousands of green cards unused (with many likely to be permanently wasted in the future) and keeping many more families needlessly separated.

There were 421,358 pending interviews in April compared to 436,700 in March, said the policy paper by Bhutoria.
Noting that while the US population has grown substantially in recent decades, the immigration system has not changed to keep pace, he said. The annual levels of immigration were established in the early 1990s and have remained largely unchanged since then, he said.

To make matters worse, the method used to calculate the annual number of employment-and-family-based immigration is deeply flawed, and has led to family-based immigration levels being set at their absolute minimum every year for the past 20 years, while hundreds of thousands of green cards for family members go wasted, never used by any individuals when they could be used to reunite families instead, Bhutoria said.

The extraordinary wait time for a Green Card to be available causes significant hardship for American families forced to wait decades to reunite with their loved ones, even though those individuals are already qualified to immigrate right now.

"Family separation takes a terrible emotional toll on families, and it imposes clear logistical, economic, and emotional hardships on families, and the growing nature of the backlogs makes the process uncertain and future planning impossible, he said.

Among other things, the commission also recommended the USCIS to expand premium processing to additional employment-based Green Card applications, all work permit petitions, and temporary immigration status extension requests, allowing applicants to pay USD 2,500 to have their cases adjudicated within 45 days in a phased approach.

Former US President Doald Trump said in an interview with Stuart Varney of Fox Business on March 21 that if he were president right now, he would threaten Vladimir Putin with nuclear war.&nbsp;

"I listened to him constantly using the N-word. That’s the N-word, and he’s constantly using it: the nuclear word," Trump said.

"We say, ’Oh, he’s a nuclear power.’ But we’re a greater nuclear power. We have the greatest submarines in the world, the most powerful machines ever built…. You can’t let these, these thousands of people die, "he added.

The US reaction has been dictated by Russia's standing as a nuclear-armed power, particularly in Biden's reluctance to adopt steps, such as a Nato-enforced no-fly zone over Ukraine, that may lead to direct physical confrontation with Russia.

A number of Afghan men and women staged protests demanding the release of the frozen assets that have led to the deteriorating humanitarian crisis in the war-torn nation.

In Kabul on Monday, a group of Afghan women held a gathering near the UN office and called for the return of the assets to Afghanistan, reports TOLO News.

"This money is Afghans'&nbsp;money, not money to pay as compensation by (US President) Joe Biden. The money should be surrendered to Afghanistan," said Arzo, a protestor.

"Our people are struggling with poverty and this money can change the situation inside Afghanistan," said Shogofa Nejta, another protestor.

Also on Monday, several teachers at the Shaikh Zayed University in Khost province launched a demonstration against Biden's decision to split the frozen assets, calling it unfair.

"This is a cruelty, they do not have the right to hold Afghanistan's money as compensation," said Rabani Wahdat, a teacher.-

Residents of Bamyan province also took to the streets to urge the release of the assets belonging to the Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB) held in the US and other countries.

The protests come in the wake of Biden signing an Executive Order on February 11, under which some of the frozen assets will be distributed as assistance to Afghanistan and to victims of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.

According to the White House, while "the administration will seek to facilitate access to $3.5 billion of those assets for the benefit of the Afghan people", "more than $3.5 billion in DAB assets would remain in the US and are subject to ongoing litigation by American victims of terrorism".

When Kabul fell to the Taliban in August 2021, Afghanistan had over $9 billion in reserves held in the name of DAB outside of the country.

This included $7 billion in reserves held in the US, with the rest of the reserves largely being in Germany, the UAE, Switzerland, and a couple of other states.

Watch: US President Joe Biden calls reporter 'stupid son of a b****' on hot mic. Find out why

Leaders from across the political spectrum offered tributes to Bob Dole, the former Senate majority leader and Republican presidential nominee who died Sunday, hailing him as a war hero and statesman who dedicated his life to public service.

“Bob Dole was a man to be admired by Americans,” President Joe Biden said on Twitter. “He had an unerring sense of integrity and honor.”

The president cited Dole’s “legacy of decency, dignity, good humor, and patriotism.”

Vice President Kamala Harris called Dole “a war hero and patriot.”

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the minority leader, said in a statement that Dole’s “lifetime of service was rooted in a simple mission: looking out for his neighbors.”

That path started with serving customers at a soda fountain in Russell, Kansas, and continued through his service in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division during World War II, and it was capped off by nearly 30 years in the Senate and more than a decade as the Republican leader, he said.

“His Dust Bowl roots fueled a special commitment to vulnerable Americans, and sure enough, Bob’s work on food security, veterans’ issues, and the rights of disabled Americans have continued to have an especially lasting impact,” McConnell said.

Mike Pence, the former Republican vice president in the Trump administration, said Dole “lived an extraordinary life of service to America.”

Former President Barack Obama said on Twitter that Dole’s political leadership and demeanor harked “back to a day when members of the Greatest Generation abided by a certain code, putting country over party.”

Former President George W. Bush said of Dole in a statement: “This good man represented the finest of American values.”

“I will always remember Bob’s salute to my late dad at the Capitol,” Bush added, referring to his father, former President George H.W. Bush, who died in 2018, “and now we Bushes salute Bob and give thanks for his life of principled service.”

Former President Bill Clinton, Dole’s opponent in the 1996 presidential contest, said on Twitter that Dole dedicated his life to serving the American people, “from his heroism in World War II to the 35 years he spent in Congress.”

“After all he gave in the war,” Clinton added, “he didn’t have to give more. But he did. His example should inspire people today and for generations to come.”

Al Franken, the Democratic former U.S. senator and comedy writer, said of Dole: “He was a war hero, one of the great senators, a lovely man, and … well, I’m finally the funniest former US senator. I’ll miss this REALLY funny man.”

Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the minority leader, said in a statement that Dole’s “lifetime of service was rooted in a simple mission: looking out for his neighbors.” That path started with serving customers at a soda fountain in Russell, Kansas, and continued through his service in the Army’s 10th Mountain Division during World War II, and it was capped off by nearly 30 years in the Senate and more than a decade as the Republican leader, he said. “His Dust Bowl roots fueled a special commitment to vulnerable Americans, and sure enough, Bob’s work on food security, veterans’ issues, and the rights of disabled Americans have continued to have an especially lasting impact,” McConnell said. Mike Pence, the former Republican vice president in the Trump administration, said Dole “lived an extraordinary life of service to America.” Former President Barack Obama said on Twitter that Dole’s political leadership and demeanor harked “back to a day when members of the Greatest Generation abided by a certain code, putting country over party.” Former President George W. Bush said of Dole in a statement: “This good man represented the finest of American values.” “I will always remember Bob’s salute to my late dad at the Capitol,” Bush added, referring to his father, former President George H.W. Bush, who died in 2018, “and now we Bushes salute Bob and give thanks for his life of principled service.” Former President Bill Clinton, Dole’s opponent in the 1996 presidential contest, said on Twitter that Dole dedicated his life to serving the American people, “from his heroism in World War II to the 35 years he spent in Congress.” “After all he gave in the war,” Clinton added, “he didn’t have to give more. But he did. His example should inspire people today and for generations to come.” Al Franken, the Democratic former U.S. senator and comedy writer, said of Dole: “He was a war hero, one of the great senators, a lovely man, and … well, I’m finally the funniest former US senator. I’ll miss this REALLY funny man.”

US President Joe Biden seems to be highly gaffe-prone as he has done it again. During a menorah lighting celebration at White House for Hanukkah, the president appeared to forget Arab–Israeli history as he got confused between 1967 Six-Day War and Yom Kippur War of 1973. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"I have known every prime minister well since Golda Meir, including Golda Meir. And during the Six-Day War, I had an opportunity too — she invited me to come over because I was going to be the liaison between she and the Egyptians about the Suez, and so on and so forth," the president told East Room guests recently. &nbsp;

Gaffe-prone US President Joe Biden gets flurry of memes for 79th birthday

In the first traditional turkey pardon ceremony in his presidency, US President Joe Biden pardoned two turkeys, namely, Peanut Butter and Jelly, on Friday. &nbsp;

The two birds were spared from becoming a presidential meal in this holiday season in a joke-filled ceremony on the White House's Rose Garden. &nbsp;

The outdoor ceremony was attended by the families and children of the White House staffers. &nbsp;

On the occasion, the President joked, "Eventually, Peanut Butter and Jelly were selected on the basis of their temperament, appearance and, I suspect, vaccination status. Yes, instead of getting basted, these two turkeys are getting boosted." &nbsp;

Peanut Butter and Jelly were "two names I couldn't agree on more. I have to admit to you, my wife doesn't like me to admit it, that's what I like for lunch," said Biden. &nbsp;

In Thanksgiving tradition, US President Joe Biden pardons ‘Peanut Butter’, ‘Jelly’

As Joe&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;pops the cork on his alcohol-free birthday bubbly this weekend he will not need to be reminded that he was born as close to the end of Abraham Lincoln's presidency as he was to the start of his own.

The veteran Democrat, who turns&nbsp;79&nbsp;on Saturday, has said publicly he intends to run for reelection but there has been&nbsp;persistent speculation&nbsp;that he could change his mind given his advanced years.

There is usually little intrigue around the nomination when a US president is still in his first term, as no occupant of the White House has declined to seek reelection since Lyndon Johnson more than 50 years ago.

But&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;would be 86 at the end of a second term, and&nbsp;potential&nbsp;successors&nbsp;and their sponsors are already circling, seeing another four years as an assignment too far in&nbsp;Biden's storied political career.

In a new Politico/Morning Consult poll, only 40 per cent of voters surveyed agreed with the statement that&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;"is in good health," while 50 per cent disagreed -- a 29-point shift over a year.

"If his health declines, as sometimes happens in one's 80s, his plans might change," said David Greenberg, a journalism and history professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

"That would create a wide-open field, with many of the 2020 runners-up as possibilities, as well as a lot of people who didn't run."

If&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;were to become the nation's first octogenarian presidential candidate, he would be somewhat undermining the status he gave himself during the campaign as a "bridge" to the next generation -- taken by many as a tacit assurance that he would not seek a second term.&nbsp;

History-making Kamala Harris -- the first woman and first Black and Asian American ever sworn in as vice president -- would be the heir apparent.

<h2>&nbsp;'Bold leader'&nbsp;</h2>

But her halo has slipped amid a run of negative press alleging dysfunction among her staff, casting doubt on her standing within the administration and reporting her frustrations over her thorny assignments.

Asked by ABC Thursday if she'd spoken to&nbsp;Biden&nbsp;about his plans for the future, Harris said "absolutely not," adding that the administration was focused on infrastructure, national security and other priorities.

She rejected reports that she was feeling misused or wrongly deployed, telling the channel: "We're getting things done, and we're doing it together."

But Harris has struggled to make an impact, with her approval dipping to 28 per cent in one survey, and headlines outlining her frustrations over being politically sidelined and set up for failure.&nbsp;

It is not unusual for vice presidents to be assigned some heavy lifting during their time in the West Wing, but Harris has been handed some particularly tough portfolios,&nbsp;from&nbsp;voting rights to the immigration crisis at the southern border.

Overseas, her recent trip to Paris went without hitches, but jaunts to Latin America and Asia have been less successful.

Harris visited Guatemala and Mexico in June as part of her immigration mission, giving an interview to NBC News that was widely regarded as a disaster.&nbsp;

Asked why she had not yet been to the border, Harris replied: "And I haven't been to Europe... And I mean, I don't understand the point that you're making. I'm not discounting the importance of the border."

Hours after the interview, several US media outlets reported that Harris's communications chief&nbsp;Ashley Etienne&nbsp;was leaving -- "to pursue other opportunities," according to White House officials -- adding to speculation about low morale among the staff.&nbsp;

<h2>&nbsp;'Hope and rumour'&nbsp;</h2>

Amid Harris's travails, another barrier-breaking Democrat, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg has risen to the fore as the point man on implementing much of&nbsp;Biden's $1.2 trillion infrastructure package.&nbsp;

But the first openly gay US cabinet secretary is also the face of the supply-chain crisis that right-wing media are predicting will ruin the holiday season.&nbsp;

Critics also point to the biggest flaw of his impressive campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination, a glaring lack of support&nbsp;from&nbsp;voters of colour.&nbsp;

Three analysts interviewed by AFP -- former congressional chief of staff Mark Bayer, University of Toledo politics professor Sam Nelson and Tommy Goodwin, a Washington-based lobbyist -- said Harris would nevertheless be the frontrunner in any Democratic succession, with Buttigieg also in the conversation.

"Beyond those two, it's worth keeping an eye on California Governor Gavin Newsom," said Goodwin, while Nelson singled out a number of previous hopefuls, including Beto O'Rourke, who is vying for the Texas governor's mansion in 2022.

From&nbsp;the Senate, Cory Booker is said to be putting out feelers in the critical primary state of New Hampshire, while&nbsp;Minnesota's Amy Klobuchar is on a book tour and&nbsp;Elizabeth Warren has begun endorsing candidates beyond her Massachusetts base.

But Peter Loge, an associate professor at George Washington University, says any talk of&nbsp;Biden's retirement would be premature, recalling similar claims about Donald Trump in 2019. &nbsp;

"There is always speculation based on hope and whispered rumours," Loge told AFP, "most of which isn't based on more than hope and rumour."

As Joe Biden pops the cork on his alcohol-free birthday bubbly this weekend he will not need to be reminded that he was born as close to the end of Abraham Lincoln's presidency as he was to the start of his own.

As Joe Biden pops the cork on his alcohol-free birthday bubbly this weekend he will not need to be reminded that he was born as close to the end of Abraham Lincoln's presidency as he was to the start of his own. The veteran Democrat, who turns 79 on Saturday, has said publicly he intends to run for reelection but there has been persistent speculation that he could change his mind given his advanced years. There is usually little intrigue around the nomination when a US president is still in his first term, as no occupant of the White House has declined to seek reelection since Lyndon Johnson more than 50 years ago. But Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term, and potential successors and their sponsors are already circling, seeing another four years as an assignment too far in Biden's storied political career. In a new Politico/Morning Consult poll, only 40 per cent of voters surveyed agreed with the statement that Biden "is in good health," while 50 per cent disagreed -- a 29-point shift over a year. "If his health declines, as sometimes happens in one's 80s, his plans might change," said David Greenberg, a journalism and history professor at Rutgers University in New Jersey. "That would create a wide-open field, with many of the 2020 runners-up as possibilities, as well as a lot of people who didn't run." If Biden were to become the nation's first octogenarian presidential candidate, he would be somewhat undermining the status he gave himself during the campaign as a "bridge" to the next generation -- taken by many as a tacit assurance that he would not seek a second term. History-making Kamala Harris -- the first woman and first Black and Asian American ever sworn in as vice president -- would be the heir apparent. 'Bold leader' But her halo has slipped amid a run of negative press alleging dysfunction among her staff, casting doubt on her standing within the administration and reporting her frustrations over her thorny assignments. Asked by ABC Thursday if she'd spoken to Biden about his plans for the future, Harris said "absolutely not," adding that the administration was focused on infrastructure, national security and other priorities. During the meeting, US reporters, photographers and television crews, who are traveling with the president, were barred. The Vatican supplied a heavily edited video of the event. The meeting was described as lighthearted by senior administration officials. &nbsp;
