"I know on this day it was especially hard for New York and everyone around the United States," said Fernandez, who fell 6-4 6-3 to British teenager Emma Raducanu. 
 
"I just want to say that I hope I can be as strong and as resilient as New York has been the past 20 years." 
 
Fernandez, who was not even born when the attacks on the World Trade Center towers took place, said she had learned about 9/11 from watching movies and asking her parents what happened. 
 
She said when she woke up on Saturday, she looked at the date and remembered.

Raducanu had shot to fame after her dream run at Wimbledon when she got to the fourth round of the British Grand Slam. Raducanu's win at the American Grand Slam will give her rankings a major jump.&nbsp;

She started the year with a ranking of 345. She went on to be ranked 338 with the first round of the Wimbledon. As US Open kicked off, Raducanu was ranked 150. Now, with this win, she will be ranked among the top 25 Tennis players (projected to rise to 23rd).&nbsp;

"I thought Wimbledon was such an incredible experience. Fourth round, second week, I couldn't believe it. I thought, what a great achievement," she told reporters. "But I was still hungry."

"I'm not even thinking about, like, when I'm going home. I have no idea when I'm going home. I have no idea what I'm doing tomorrow. I'm just really trying to embrace the moment, really take it all in," Raducanu said.

"I definitely think it's the time to just switch off from any future thoughts or any plans, any schedule. I've got absolutely no clue. Right now, no care in the world, I'm just loving life."

"I have absolutely no idea what's going on outside of the little world that we're in here. We've just been in the quiet room, just enjoying the moment, taking it all in," said Raducanu.

"We just really need to just shut out from everything, just enjoy it as a team, because it was a team effort. I didn't get here by myself at all."

World number one Novak Djokovic is a match away from one of the highest achievements across sports, with a calendar Grand Slam on the line after he overcame German Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the US&nbsp;Open semi-final in New York on Friday (September 10).

Djokovic handed the German his first break of the night with a double fault in the first set but otherwise showed no mercy, firing off 41 winners and a dozen aces across the entire match.

The third set was a matter of survival of the fittest. Djokovic had a 40-0 head start in the tenth game only to see Zverev fend off two break points through marathon rallies, including a 53-shot exchange, before he broke the German's serve for the set point.

Tied at two sets a piece, Djokovic won a 30-shot rally for the early break, but after fending off four break points saw Zverev convert in the seventh game. He broke Zverev's serve in the next game before hoisting his arms aloft to wild cheers from the crowd.

"Yeah, I mean it's a great win," said Djokovic in his news conference. "I'm proud of the fight that I delivered. Yeah, I probably could have played better in some moments but again, I have to be satisfied with delivering the best tennis I possibly could in the most important set, which was the fifth set."

Zverev was tipped to be the toughest test at the U.S. Open for the Serbian. Not only had he ended Djokovic's bid for a Golden Slam - the four majors and the Olympic gold in the same year - six weeks back, the German was also on a career-best 16-match winning streak before Friday's contest.

"One thing that was very good from him is how he served on breakpoints," Zverev added. "Most of the time I didn't have a chance. That was the big difference tonight.

"I feel like every time it was an important moment, he came out with massive serves."

Currently in a three-way tie for most men's tennis major titles at 20 a piece with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, with whom he makes up tennis' "Big Three," Djokovic could also exceed his rivals in the sheer number of Grand Slam trophies if he wins on Sunday.

Both Federer and Nadal missed the year's final major due to injury.

"I know we want to talk about history. I know it's on the line. I'm aware of it. Of course, I'm aware of it.

"But I'm just trying to lock into what I know works for me. So I have my routines, I have my people. I isolate myself. I gather all the necessary energy for the next battle, only the next match, the next match.

"I said it on the court. I'm going to treat this match as it's my last one because it's arguably the most important one of my career maybe. Maybe not, I don't know. But of this year, for sure.

"I'll be giving it all I've possibly got in the tank to win this match."

Rankings-wise, the second seeded Belarusian represented the toughest challenge yet for the 19-year-old lefhander but with a string of seeded victims behind her Fernandez had already shown she could not be intimidated. 
 
The Canadian has stated she could beat anyone and backed up the bravado with victories over four-time Grand Slam winner and defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round, three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber in the fourth and fifth seed Elina Svitolina in the quarter-finals. 
 
One of the game`s big servers Sabalenka threw everything she had at Fernandez, including 10 aces, but had no better luck against the youngster, who played with veteran poise throughout the three-set thriller. 
 
"Impossible is nothing," said Fernandez. "Like my dad would tell me all the time, there`s no limit to my potential, to what I can do.&nbsp; Every day we just got to keep working hard, we got to keep going for it. There`s no limit to what I can do."

Fernandez uses doubters as motivation to reach US Open final

British teen Emma Raducanu stunned the tennis world on Thursday by becoming the first qualifier to reach a Grand Slam final after beating Greece`s Maria Sakkari 6-1 6-4 in her U.S. Open semi-final on Thursday. 
 
With British tennis royalty Tim Henman and Virginia Wade looking on, Raducanu fended off seven break points across her first two service games and capitalized on a trio of double faults from Sakkari on the way to a 5-0 lead in the first set. 
 
Down a break in the second set, Sakkari then fought off five break points in a near 10-minute seventh game but the 18-year-old Raducanu would not be denied the victory and went on to seal the match and set up a final against 19-year-old Canadian Leylah Fernandez. 
 
"Honestly I just can`t believe it. A shock. Crazy," she said. "To be in a Grand Slam final at this stage of my career, yeah, I have no words." 
 
Playing in just her fourth tour-level tournament, Raducanu has not dropped a set in New York and completely outmatched 17th seed Sakkari, who reached the Roland Garros semis this year. 
 
"Today was always going to be a very difficult match, to play against Maria Sakkari. She`s an unbelievable player, probably one of the best athletes out there on tour," she said. 
 
"I knew before the match I was going to have to play some of my best tennis if I wanted a chance." 
 
The Greek had 33 unforced errors in the one hour and 24-minute match and struggled mightily with her first serve. 
 
"It`s tough to get yourself back in the match when nothing is going right and everything is going very good for the opponent," Sakkari told reporters. 
 
She also had to leave the court early in the match because her skirt was not the right size. 
 
"I took the wrong size of my skirt. It was a size larger," added Sakkari. "I could not play. It was falling. I was pretty quick, though." 
 
UNBELIEVABLE SUPPORT 
 
Raducanu, who electrified British tennis with her run to the fourth round of Wimbledon, has been embraced by the rowdy crowds in New York and beamed up at the stands inside Arthur Ashe Stadium after closing out the match with a forehand winner. 
 
"Since I`ve been in New York for my first round qualies match I`ve had unbelievable support in New York and you guys have made me feel right at home," she said. 
 
"I was just so excited to come out here and play in front of you guys." 
 
Raducanu said she had a packed schedule ahead of the U.S. Open and was not sure how she would play. 
 
"In a way my tennis level has surprised me in the way that I`ve managed step up against some of the best players in the world," she added. 
 
A win in Saturday`s final would see a jump to number 24 in the rankings for Raducanu, who left school this summer and parted ways with prominent coach Nigel Sears after Wimbledon in favour of her youth coach Andrew Richardson. 
 
Raducanu now has the chance to become the first British woman to win a Grand Slam since Wade won Wimbledon in 1977, though she said she knew little of the reaction to her performances back home.

"In the third set, he started swinging. He started playing incredible tennis. Yeah, I`m happy to be through in three (sets)." Zverev`s aggressive, flat returning, and heavy forehands forced Harris to play deeper behind the baseline that he prefers and limited the South`African`s ability to dictate play. The German also continued his strong serving performance this tournament, closing out the match with a 136 mph ace, his 21st of the match.

Van de Zandschulp had enjoyed a remarkable run, taking down 11th seed Diego Schwartzman to reach his first Grand Slam quarter-final, where he fired off 20 forehand winners and was the first player here to take Medvedev past the two-hour mark. 
 
The Dutch qualifier outlasted the Russian in a 20-shot rally and then converted on break point in the fifth game of the third set before taking it on Arthur Ashe Stadium, the first sign of weakness Medvedev had shown since arriving in New York. 
 
But the 2019 runner-up, who fired down 13 aces in the match, came roaring back in the fourth set, winning all but two of his first-serve points and never facing a break point.

Tiafoe, who lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime on Sunday, said players saw the absence of Federer and Nadal as an opportunity to go deep into the tournament.
