"It is totally unacceptable what is happening on the Nile street as it creates chaos and makes life difficult for citizens," the council said in a statement on Sunday.

In its statement, the US embassy said the two sides "should not allow yesterday's events to prevent them from building on yesterday's progress to rapidly conclude negotiations to establish a civilian-led transitional government".

"We encourage the people of Sudan to continue to express their desire for a peaceful and democratic Sudan in a non-violent manner and to not to be provoked by the actions of those who oppose change," it said.

Washington has consistently pushed the army generals to reach a deal with the protest leaders on handing over power.

Last Wednesday, US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan spoke by telephone with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the chairman of the military council, and voiced support for "the Sudanese people's aspirations for a free, democratic and prosperous future," the State Department said.

Gaza unrest: 52 Palestinians dead in deadliest day in years

US envoy to the Middle East and Trump's senior advisor on the region, Jared Kushner, in his speech at the embassy inauguration ceremony today, noted that the move shows that the entire world can trust the United States.

Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat has announced his plans to name the square near the US embassy site as the " United States Square in honour of President Donald Trump".

A media report quoted the mayor saying that they were naming the square in the honour of Trump to show their love and respect for the president and the American people.&nbsp;

He added that the gesture was for the American people who "always stood by there side".

The naming will be celebrated in an official event in future with American dignitaries.

To register its protest over the incident, the Foreign Office summoned US Ambassador David Hale.

"The US ambassador was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today and a strong protest was lodged by the Foreign Secretary on the tragic death of the motorcyclist and serious injury to the co-rider in the traffic accident yesterday that involved a US diplomat," Foreign Office said in a statement.

It said that the US ambassador expressed his deep sympathy and sadness over the loss of life and assured that the embassy would fully cooperate in the investigation.

The foreign secretary conveyed that justice will take its course in accordance with the law of the land and the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961.

According to Dawn, the diplomat had tried to speed away after the accident, but he was stopped at a nearby checkpoint, where police tried to question him. He, however, refused to get off from the vehicle.

The area police arrived at the scene and asked the driver to surrender. Shortly, several locals and foreigners arrived there on different vehicles and introduced themselves as officials of the US embassy.

The diplomat asked the police to clear the way as he had diplomatic immunity, police said, adding that when they refused, the officials put up resistance.

Senior policemen then visited the spot and took the defence attache and his vehicle, as well as a colleague, to the Kohsar police station, the Dawn reported.

Police asked the other US diplomats to submit written statements about the accident and the diplomatic status of the suspect.

The US diplomat was later allowed to leave. The police, however, impounded the vehicle and took the diplomat's cards for verification, the daily said.

Turkish police on Monday detained four Iraqis suspected of planning an attack on the US embassy in Ankara, media reports said.
