WION exclusively spoke with former ambassador of Chile to China Jorge Heine to get his razor-sharp views on this crucial development which has fixated the attention of major global powers on China. But before we cater to the big fish - China, a look at US and its diminishing clout in the Gulf is imperative.&nbsp;

Ambassador Heine is a Research Professor at the Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston University. In a video interview with WION, the former diplomat said that the phenomenon of US stepping away from Gulf is not a new one.&nbsp;

"As you may recall some ten years ago, the United States announced that it was pivoting to Asia... by that Washington meant pivoting away from the Middle East, which had been the main focus and concern of the US foreign policy for a decade and move towards East Asia, mostly on China."&nbsp;

In a book West Asia At War, another former Ambassador Talmiz Ahmad had pointed out the urgent need for Saudi Arabia to diversify its economy by stepping away from its dependence on oil. As Saudi looks actively for options in this quest, China will be more than happy to extend a helping hand.&nbsp;

Ambassador Heine argues in affirmative. China, he said, can play a role in developing Saudi infrastructure, connectivity and its industrial capacity. "I think that is very much in the cards."&nbsp;

The break of diplomatic relations between Saudi Arabia and Iran happened seven years ago in 2016. Though the negotiations have been going on for a couple of years, the envoy said that the deal got a "significant push" in recent months in Beijing, particularly after the visit of the Iranian president to China.&nbsp;

But one thing that the envoy is sure of is that the rapproachmet is a good news for all, be it Israel, India or even US. On &nbsp;hindsight, he added that the deal is a blow to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who has made it "his business and his primary foreign policy objective to isolate Iran" which is "obviously not working very well."&nbsp;

Envoy Heine, who recently co-authored a chapter in book "External Powers in Latin America", also argues that Latin American countries have been pressured by West to side with Ukraine in its ongoing war wit Russia and to provide arms to the war-torn country, but they rightly refused to adhere to the West's demands.&nbsp;

"This is a European war that should be solved and addressed by Europeans... we argue for active Non-Alignment taking a page for India traditional foreign policy and taking... a neutral stance in the war in Ukraine."&nbsp;

Speaking about the religious differences between Iran and Saudi Arabia, he said, there are some serious geopolitical concerns as the the nations are significant powers in West Asia and there is a natural element of competition between the two.&nbsp;

"It seems to me that both Riyadh and Tehran have come to the conclusion that that this is one piece of trouble (religious rift) they do not need and that they better make amends and work together... So I think they have concluded that best thing is to move forward, leave the difference behind and have a working relationship. This does not mean they will become best friends or some sort of military allies. They will not."

US government has approved the $8 billion Willow oil drilling project in Alaska, media outlets reported on Monday saying that the move faces the wrath of climate activists and environmentalists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The US Interior Department has reduced the size of the project by denying two of the five drill sites and approving the rest three proposed by Alaska's largest crude oil producer and largest owner of exploration leases, ConocoPhillips.&nbsp;

Earlier, the Biden administration was mooting to reduce the size of the project to two sites. Had the sites were reduced to only two, it would have yielded the company only 70% of the oil they initially shown the interest to drill from the project.&nbsp;

The approval of this very contentious project is also a political advance for Alaska’s bipartisan congressional delegation which lent its backing to the White House.&nbsp;The final scope of the project will cover 68,000 fewer acres, CNN reported citing sources.&nbsp;

On environment conservation front, the protections were extended to the special areas which include Teshekpuk Lake, Utukok Uplands, Peard Bay Colville River, Kasegaluk Lagoon.&nbsp;These places are crucial habitat to grizzly bears, migratory birds polar bears and caribou.&nbsp;

Owned by the US federal government, the Willow Project is a decades-long oil drilling venture in the National Petroleum Reserve.&nbsp;Even as the climate activists are strongly protesting against the project, the oil project would still years to fully take off with oil making its way in the market.&nbsp;

The area where the project will be constructed reportedly carries 600 million barrels of oil. As per Biden administration’s estimates, the project would generate enough oil to release 9.2 million metric tons of carbon pollution a year. This equates to adding 2 million gas-powered cars.&nbsp;

Earthjustice President Abigail Dillen said that the approval will be a blow to the climate goals.&nbsp;

“We are too late in the climate crisis to approve massive oil and gas projects that directly undermine the new clean economy that the Biden Administration committed to advancing,” Dillen said adding, “We know President Biden understands the existential threat of climate, but he is approving a project that derails his own climate goals.”&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that Federal Deposit Insurance Corp (FDIC) kicked off SVB auction late Saturday. According to the report, the winner may not be known till late on Sunday (local time).

On Friday, US regulators pulled the plug on SVB -- a key lender to US start-ups since the 1980s -- after a run on deposits made it no longer tenable for the medium-sized bank to stay afloat on its own.

Yellen said reforms made after the 2008 financial crisis meant the government was not considering a bailout for SVB.&nbsp;

"During the financial crisis, there were investors and owners of systemic large banks that were bailed out... and the reforms that have been put in place means that we're not going to do that again," she said.

"But we are concerned about depositors and focused on trying to meet their needs."

Two suspected migrant-smuggling boats sank off the coast of southern California on Sunday (March 12), killing at least eight people, according to rescuers, as reported by AFP.&nbsp;

"We lost eight souls," the lifeguard chief for the city of San Diego, James Gartland, told a press conference.

"This is one of the worst maritime smuggling tragedies that I can think of in California, certainly here in the city of San Diego," he added, with reference to clandestine migration into the United States.

The disaster occurred at night in a place that Gartland called "hazardous" because of sand bars and in-shore rip currents, although it was unclear what specifically caused it.

He stated that just before midnight on Saturday, a Spanish-speaking person called the 911 emergency line and reported that two small, open boats — one carrying eight people and the other carrying 15 — had capsized at Torrey Pines beach in San Diego, a city close to the Mexican border, trapping about 23 people between them.

A murder suspect in Oregon, US, who was about to stand trial gave the slip to the security personnel manning the courtroom and fled. A video of the incident has gone viral.

According to Oregon state law, all of the suspect’s restraints, such as handcuffs and leg shackles, were removed during the jury selection process.

The incident took place on February 28, but the Washington County Sheriff's Office made the video public on Thursday.

Edi Villalobos Jr, 28, was supposed to stand trial for murder and other charges. After entering the courtroom, a cop removed the shackles placed on him.&nbsp;Sensing an opportunity to escape, he dashed down the hallway and out of the courthouse.

“At around 11 am (local time), the court took a break, and restraints were placed back on Villalobos. When the break ended, deputies again removed all restraints from Villalobos, as directed by Oregon Law. Once the restraints were removed, Villalobos ran out of the courtroom and the courthouse,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement, according to Fox News.

According to local media reports, Villalobos was found after two hours of manhunt, hiding under a blanket in a closet of a stranger's apartment. A neighbour had called in 911 to report a break-in, which allowed the police to nab him.

"Deputies entered the apartment and located Villalobos hiding in a closet underneath a blanket," the sheriff said.

He was then taken into custody without incident and transferred back to the Washington County Jail.

Villalobos is accused of stabbing two people to death on April 10, 2021, according to reports.

Apart from second-degree murder and unlawful use of weapon charges, he now faces two new felony burglary charges and another for escaping custody.

Villalobos will be taken to court on March 21 for a status hearing.

As per the news report, the group spent USD 4 million to obtain the data which was then sent to bishops located across the country. It is not yet fully clear what will be the ramifications of this. The report quoted an annonymous source to say that the data may mean that some of &nbsp;the clergymembers are kept from getting promoted and some of them being pushed to early retirement.

“The power of this story is that you don’t often see where these practices are linked to a specific person or group of people. Here, you can clearly see the link,” said Justin Sherman, a senior fellow at Duke University’s public policy school. Sherman was quoted by the Washington Post.

“Revealing information that harms a person’s reputation without an objectively valid reason – even if it’s true – is considered a sin,” said a member of United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) as quoted by the Post.

Jayd Henricks, president of Catholic Laity and Clergy for Renewal defended collection of information.

“After all, data is used by all major corporations, so why not the Church?” he wrote in his blog.

“The American public deserves answers to every aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Representative Michael Turner, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He represents the state of Ohio.

Turner said that the information that needs to be public includes "how this virus was created and, specifically, whether it was a natural occurrence or was the result of a lab-related event.”

China was the first country to come into the clutches of coronavirus pandemic. The first cluster of infections was found in the city of Wuhan. The virus soon spread all over the globe bringing economies to standstill due to lockdowns that sometimes lasted for months. It is widely alleged that the coronavirus was a man-made virus and was developed in Chinese labs. China denies all such allegations.

The intelligence that would be declassified as a result of of the legislation will also have information about China's Wuhan Institute of Virology. There are varying opinions within the US intelligence community as to whether the pandemic was a result of a lab leak of coronavirus or its jump to humans from animals.

"Transparency is a cornerstone of our democracy,” said Rep. Jim Himes, of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, during the debate.

Passage of the legislation was indicative of a rare bipartisanship between Democrats and Republicans.

If the legislation is signed into a law, it will require release within 90 days “any and all information relating to potential links between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origin of the Coronavirus Disease."

Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Thursday that China was firmly opposed to the restrictions as a means "to intervene and limit normal economic and trade exchanges between Chinese and Dutch companies."

The US had imposed a slew of export restrictions late last year including a measure to cut China off from certain semiconductor chips made anywhere in the world with US equipment.

The relations between the US and China are strained on multiple fronts. In addition to tech field, the two sides often spar on the issue of Taiwan. China considers Taiwan its own territory and has not ruled out use of force to capture it. US is the biggest international backer of Taiwan.
