US Army General Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made an unannounced visit to Syria and said on Saturday (March 4) that US deployment to Syria is still worth the risk. Milley visited a base to meet US troops in the country's northeast. He assessed efforts to prevent a resurgence of the militant group and review safeguards for American forces against attacks, including from drones.

US is fighting Islamic State in Syria and is also opposed to Syrian government led by President Bashar al-Assad.

While Islamic State is a shadow of the group that ruled over a third of Syria and Iraq in a Caliphate declared in 2014, hundreds of fighters are still camped in desolate areas where neither the U.S.-led coalition nor the Syrian army, with support from Russia and Iranian-backed militias, exert full control.

Thousands of other Islamic State fighters are in detention facilities guarded by Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces, America's key ally in the country.

American officials say that Islamic State could still regenerate into a major threat.

Asked by reporters traveling with him if he believed the Syria mission was worth the risk, Milley tied the mission to the security of the United States and its allies, saying: "If you think that that's important, then the answer is 'Yes.'"

"I happen to think that's important," Milley said.

"So I think that an enduring defeat of ISIS and continuing to support our friends and allies in the region ... I think those are important tasks that can be done."

Dr Conrad said that rather than setting out to own or take resources from space, human beings should endeavour to be “gentle explorers”. “Regardless of who or what is out there, that attitude of exploration being almost synonymous with exploitation gives one a different perspective as you approach to the task,” she said, The Guardian reported.&nbsp;

She added that if something that is not here on Earth is seen as a resource, just ripe to be exploited, then that perpetuates colonialism.&nbsp;

Another scientist Dr Hilding Neilson said that in Canada, Indigenous people had rights and responsibilities to unceded and treaty land, with the absence of a height limit.&nbsp;

Dr Nielson said that such people had deep connections with bodies such as the moon. “Part of that connection is inherent to the culture and the way of living and way of knowing,” the scientist said, adding any damage to these bodies was a concern.&nbsp;

Those working on space missions, such as NASA's ''Artemis Program", should engage with Indigenous people in advance, the scientist added. He also stressed the need to move away from the rhetoric around building colonies on the moon or other planets.&nbsp;

According to the Guinness World Record, "The most consecutive days to run an ultra marathon distance (female) is 23, and was achieved by Megan Cassidy (USA) in Orlando, Florida, USA, from December 17, 2022 to January 8, 2023."

Cassidy beat the previous record of 22 days and intended to go much longer, but she was forced to give up on her quest to return to work.

The incident was reported on Friday after the sheriff's deputies received a call around 4 pm (local time) on South Harris Street, Ellis County Sheriff Deputy Jerry Cozby said, reports ABC News.

After arriving, the officers found all the victims, i.e., children, lying on the floor of the house. While three of them were found dead, two others have been taken to a nearby hospital. The medical condition of the injured is unknown.

The police said they have nabbed a suspect, whose identity has not been revealed. The names of the victims have also not been shared, with the police even refusing to reveal how the suspect was related to them.

However, local media reports claimed that the assailant was the mother of those five children.

“This is a fluid investigation, and we will update you as things evolve,” Deputy Cozby said at the news conference. “Right now, the most important thing are prayers for the family of those involved.”

The sheriff also ruled any danger to the public “at this time.”

Earlier, a statement released by the sheriff’s office said that it believed “this to be an isolated incident that presents no further threat to the Italy Community.”

The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in a statement expressed shock at the tragedy, saying that they are assisting the officials with the investigation.

"We are shocked by this incomprehensible tragedy, and already working with law enforcement to investigate how this happened, and why," they said.

Around 2,000 residents live in Italy—located roughly 40 miles (approx. 64 kilometres) south of Dallas.

China leads US in global competition for key emerging technologies

TikTok is fast becoming the go-to destination for video consumption and entertainment for US consumers as they have been spending an increased amount of time on the video-sharing platform, according to a report.

According to a report by Insider Intelligence, TikTok, which already overtook YouTube two years ago in terms of app use, is closing in on Netflix fast as US teenagers continue to spend more time on the Chinese video-sharing app.

“The amount of time US adult TikTok users spend on the app is rising quickly. It’s well ahead of YouTube user time and closing the gap with Netflix,” the market tracker said in the report, according to AFP news agency.

The report further says that US adults ranging from age 25 to 54 years old find TikTok to be addictive, and have spent an average of 56 minutes per day this year—six minutes less than the time spent on Netflix.

“TikTok is a huge reason for the sustained growth in overall time spent with social networks since the pandemic,” the report said.

“TikTok users ages 18 to 24 are watching the equivalent of a full-length comedy movie on the app every day.”

On the other hand, traditional TV viewing is witnessing a steep fall, with “millennials and Gen X” TV viewers “second-screening” with TikTok, the report highlighted.

The report comes at a time when a panel of US lawmakers have proposed to table a bill that would make it easier to ban the Chinese app over security concerns, amidst criticism that the proposal threatens free speech.

The Republican-led House Foreign Affairs Committee passed the Deterring America's Technological Adversaries (DATA) Act, which is likely faces opposition from free speech campaigners and Democrats when it comes up for votes in the full House and Senate.

"My bill mandates the administration to ban TikTok or any software applications that threaten US national security," said the committee's chairman&nbsp;Michael McCaul.

"And make no mistake -- TikTok is a security threat. It allows (China) to manipulate and monitor its users while it gobbles up Americans' data to be used for their malign activities."

The United States’ New York Police Department (NYPD) has yet again lowered its requirement for new recruits as it moved to scrap its 1.5-mile (2.4 km) at the police academy, the training Chief Juanita Holmes told the New York Post. The move has since sparked debate among department officials with many weighing in about the so-called controversial move.&nbsp;

According to Holmes, the move will make it easier for female applicants to become a part of the NYPD. Notably, this also comes months after the department dramatically relaxed its police fitness test after a record wave of retirements. Furthermore, the head of training has also insisted that the timed run which needs to be completed by the men and women in 14 minutes and 21 seconds is not necessary to become an officer.&nbsp;

“No cop on patrol runs a mile and a half…No one’s chasing anyone a mile and a half. Not to mention every day in the gym you’re doing a mile and a half (as part of training)”, said Holmes to the Post. She added that this requirement holds back otherwise qualified candidates, particularly women.&nbsp;

However, NYPD Commissioner Keechant Sewell and now-retired Chief Kenneth Corey were against the move and took the matter up with the city’s Mayor Eric Adams, who reportedly agreed with Holmes. Therefore, now the only physical fitness criterion to become a part of the NYPD is the Job Standard Test (JST) which is a multi-step course which needs to be completed in four minutes and 28 seconds.&nbsp;

Notably, the NYPD has not responded to specific questions about the requirement in question as well as the move to scrap it and said that the JST meets the training standards required by the state. “To date, the NYPD is in compliance with the physical fitness standards set by the (state’s Municipal Police Training Council). The requirements to complete the daily physical training and tactics of our Police Academy, including running nearly every day, remains unchanged,” reported the Post.&nbsp;

This has also led many to question the fitness of the levels of the cops in the NYPD. “Cops are already out of shape. What’s going to be coming in here now?” said one police officer from Manhattan. While Eugene O’Donnell, professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice and former NYPD cop, speaking to the Post blamed the move on the “defund the police” movement.&nbsp;

He added, “They’re the ones that did this, and they’re the ones who are going to have to live with the consequences of a department where the utterly unfit are all that’s left in the pool.” &nbsp;O’Donnell also told the Post how this decision is not driven by research but “sheer desperation” and how there is nothing but “disadvantages to public safety from this decision.”

Similarly, City Councilman Robert Holden said that he was worried about New York making it too easy to become a police officer and suggested giving more time to recruits to finish the run rather than just scrapping it entirely. “I think there’s more women that are fit than men! I’ve seen cops that are not fit and they can’t run more than one block - they are at a distinct disadvantage if they’re not fit,” said Holden, as per The Post.&nbsp;

This also comes after a six-foot wall inside the Police Academy gym was replaced with a chain-link fence which is said to be easier to climb, as per the report which cited a cellphone video showing multiple out-of-shape cops trying and failing to scale the barrier.&nbsp;

His first visit was to Kazakhstan where he met his counterpart. Blinken on Tuesday held talks with Kazakh foreign minister Mukhtar Tileuberdi and Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev.&nbsp;

Later, Blinken took part in a meeting of the "C5+1" diplomatic platform, which represents the US approach to Central Asia, jointly engaging all five Central Asian governments, namely Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.&nbsp;

Ketchup maker Heinz will give a new boat to a man who consumed the brand's iconic condiment to survive when stranded at sea for over a month, said a report by the Guardian.&nbsp;After launching a successful social media campaign with the hashtag #FindtheKetchupBoatGuy, the Pittsburgh-based Heinz food business has been in touch with Elvis François, the sailor, about purchasing him a new boat. When he was ultimately saved, François had left his old boat behind.

“We received thousands of likes, shares and messages of kindness in our search to find Elvis François,” a statement on Heinz’s&nbsp;<a data-link-name="in body link" href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CpLBnwLr_zD/">Instagram page</a>&nbsp;said on Monday. “It was an incredible group effort across six continents that led to the hundreds of articles and leads and our eventual contact with Elvis.”

Heinz issued a separate statement to the Guardian on Tuesday that said the company and François “are working out the logistical details of [getting] him his new boat” but didn’t elaborate further.

Heinz representatives spoke with the sailor via a Zoom conference call two days ago, according to a brief Facebook post on Sunday by Emo News, a Dominican media source.

He lived off a bottle of Heinz ketchup, garlic salt, Maggi soup cubes, and rainwater that he gathered with a cloth. On the boat's deck, he also inscribed the word "help" in English.

After that, according to François, "there was nothing else to do but sit and wait".

François said he was at sea for a total of 24 days, draining water from the boat to keep it from sinking and making vain attempts to kindle fire as a distress signal.

However, it took some time to locate him, so Heinz posted a request on Instagram asking others to aid in the search for François.

This appeal, made through the #FindtheKetchupBoatGuy campaign, was seen by approximately 5 million people and received a record number of likes for Heinz, according to the company's statement to the Guardian. François was introduced to the campaign by Dominica's Emo News, who also contacted him.

Greg Isenberg, the CEO, tweeted about the event and said ChatGPT helped him recover a&nbsp;payment from a client totaling US$&nbsp;109,500 (about Rs 90 lakh).

“Imagine a multi-billion dollar client who refused to pay you for good work rendered. Most people would turn to lawyers. I turned to ChatGPT. Here's the story of how I recovered $109,500 without spending a dime on legal fees,” Isenberg wrote on Twitter.

In keeping with his account, he stated that his business handled some design work for a brand last year that was well-received. The customer continued requesting more work, and the business kept exceeding expectations. When it was time for payment, the brand, however, stopped communicating. The CEO said that they had never had a customer skip out on payments and that this had caused the morale of the entire workforce to suffer. Then it was his turn to intervene.

"Instead of sending another email that might fall on deaf ears or hiring an expensive lawyer to initiate debt collections, I had an idea. What if ChatGPT could draft a bit more of a scary email to draw attention? At the very least, I'd learn something. The cost of ChatGPT: USD 0. The cost of our lawyer to send this notice: USD 1,000. So, we asked ChatGPT to pretend to draft “a scary collection email” so we can recover the USD 109,500 owed to us," Isenberg added.

He then revealed the prompt he used and the email text that ChatGPT had created, adding that he had forwarded the same to the customer after making a few small adjustments. To his astonishment, the customer reacted to the correspondence quickly and stated, 'let's get you guys paid'.

The prompt used by the CEO was, “Pretend you work in the finance department and your job is to collect payments from clients. Draft a scary email that gets XYZ client to pay for USD 109,500 of services rendered but hasn't responded to 5 emails. Their invoices are 5 months overdue.”
