A US official said on Tuesday (August 23) that Iran was dropping demands to block some nuclear inspections. These are the latest concessions the Islamic Republic will be making towards revival of 2015 nuclear deal.

The nuclear deal was struck between Iran and world powers including the US in 2015. However, former US president Donald Trump unilaterally took the country out of the pact in 2018. Negotiations have been going on to restore the deal which was hailed as landmark deal when it was inked.

Iran is also relaxing its insistence that Washington remove the powerful Revolutionary Guards from a terrorism blacklist, a key dispute in indirect negotiations that had stalled after a year and a half.

Iran has been combative recently over the issue of inspection of some of its nuclear plants.

In June, Iran disconnected a number of IAEA cameras after the UN body's board censured Tehran for not adequately explaining previous traces of uranium.

A senior official in President Joe Biden's administration said Iran has "made concessions on critical issues" and that reports of new US compromises were "categorically false."

"In addition to the nuclear constraints Iran would have to implement, the IAEA would again be able to implement the most comprehensive inspections regime ever negotiated, allowing it to detect any Iranian effort to pursue a nuclear weapon covertly," the official said on condition of anonymity.

"Much of that international monitoring would remain in place for an unlimited amount of time."

US President Joe Biden took office vowing to restore the agreement, but faced insistence from Iran on lifting all sanctions imposed by Trump

Iran eased demands for nuclear deal, says US official

The White House has a dim view of former American pro basketball player Dennis Rodman's reported plan to travel to Russia and gain the release of American basketball star Brittney Griner, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday.

Griner, 31, is a two-time Olympic champion and star player in the Women's National Basketball Association (WBNA). Earlier this month she convicted by a Russian court and given a nine-year sentence on drug charges.

U.S. President Joe Biden has condemned the verdict, calling it "unacceptable." The United States has offered to exchange her for Viktor Bout, a Russian arms dealer serving a 25-year prison sentence in the United States.

Rodman told NBC News on Saturday that he plans to visit Russia to seek Griner's release. "I got permission to go to Russia to help that girl," Rodman said.

"I'm trying to go this week." The NBC story did not explain who he received permission from. A senior administration official, who asked to remain anonymous, made clear the White House does not approve.

"It is public information that the administration has made a significant offer to the Russians and anything other than negotiating further through the established channel is likely to complicate and hinder release efforts," the official said.

The official also noted the State Department has issued a travel advisory warning Americans not to travel to Russia. Rodman has sought to inject himself into international diplomacy in the past. He is one of a handful of Westerners to have met North Korean head of state Kim Jong Un.

After being evacuated from Afghanistan due to a Taliban takeover, Afghan refugees and migrants in UAE facilities protested once more this week about the slow and unclear settlement procedure.

The facility provided Afghans with high-quality housing, sanitation, health, clinical, education, and food facilities.

Two Afghans in conversation with Reuters said that nearly hundreds of Afghans held banners and sang for their freedom. Almost a thousand Afghans are waiting for resettlement in other nations. A kid carried the banner, "One year is enough."

There have been difficulties, and the resettlement process has taken longer than anticipated, an official said in a statement to Reuters.

The official stated, "The UAE remains committed to this ongoing cooperation with the US and other international partners to ensure that Afghan evacuees can live in safety, security, and dignity," Reuters reported. However, a representative for the US said that it is also cooperating in its efforts to help Afghans find resettlement options.

Under the condition of anonymity, one of the Afghans said, "Nearly one year, we have been here in detention, and the camp is like a modern prison. No one is allowed to go out, they don't know when (we) will be settled permanently to any country," Reuters reported.

The protests broke out in February after the process stopped. Afterward, a senior official from the US State Dept. visited and promised all Afghans to be resettled by August. Nearly, 12,000 Afghans were reportedly housed at the Abu Dhabi facility. The US last year welcomed nearly 85,000 Afghans into the country.

The US further stated that no one would be forced to return to Afghanistan, despite the fact that several UAE citizens made voluntary returns after waiting for months.

US President Joe Biden recently ordered his troops to conduct airstrikes against the Iranian-backed groups in Syria, a week after several rockets landed at a military base in Syria housing the American troops.

Col. Joe Buccino, a representative of Central Command said, "At President Biden's direction, US military forces conducted precision airstrikes in Deir ez-Zor Syria today." "These precision strikes are intended to defend and protect US forces from attacks like the ones on August 15 against US personnel by Iran-backed groups," he added as per CNN reports.

Biden directed these strikes in accordance with his Article II authority to safeguard and defend US personnel by disrupting or deterring attacks by Iran-backed forces.

Buccino said the US military conducted intensive surveillance on 13 bunkers in the same complex for 400 hours. Since the US wasn’t sure if the two bunkers were clear of people, the strike was intended for 11 targets. The strike struck out two more bunkers as a small group of people were nearby, so in total nine bunkers in the complex in eastern Syria were destroyed by the US military strikes. The initial assessment stated that no individual was killed.

Gen. Erik Kurilla, commander of US Central Command, said, "The strike in eastern Syria was in response to attacks by Iran-backed groups against US forces in Syria on August 15th and demonstrates our resolve to defend US forces and equipment," CNN reported.

According to an official, a limited number of coalition personnel, including US service members, were stationed at the base when the assault had taken place.

Iran nuclear deal: US, Iran inch closer to nuclear deal?

At a signing ceremony on Tuesday, officials announced that the United States would return to Nigeria the $23 million that former military dictator Sani Abacha had seized.

In recent years, Nigeria has come to various agreements on the return of stolen money. From 1993 until his death in 1998, Abacha oversaw the most populous and significant oil exporting country in Africa. Transparency International claimed that he syphoned off up to $5 billion in taxpayer funds during that time. He was never put on trial.

The money was in UK accounts, according to US Ambassador Mary Beth Leonard, but was discovered and blocked by American officials. She continued by saying that, with the most recent agreement included, the US had consented to return more than $334.7 million associated with Abacha.

The money will be utilised for infrastructure projects, such as the Abuja-Kano road, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and the second Niger bridge, under the supervision of the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), according to Attorney General Abubakar Malami.

According to Malami, "The president's mandate to my office is to ensure that all international recoveries are transparently invested and monitored by civil society organizations to compete for these three projects within the agreed timeline."

Nigeria must spend monies returned from funds taken by Abacha on approved public projects, the U.S. Justice Department has previously stated, or be obliged to "replace" it.

On Monday, Iran accused the United States of dragging its feet in efforts to resurrect the 2015 nuclear agreement between Tehran and world powers. Washington rejected this accusation and claimed that a deal was closer than two weeks ago as a result of apparent Iranian flexibility.

After 16 months of intermittent, indirect negotiations between the United States and Iran, during which time EU representatives alternated between the two sides, a senior EU official announced on August 8 that the EU had made a final offer and anticipated hearing back in "very, very few weeks."

Iran provided "additional views and considerations" in response to the EU's letter last week and urged the US to be flexible in resolving the remaining three issues.

Josep Borrell, the head of foreign affairs for the EU, expressed optimism that the United States will accept the bloc's plan as early as this week and noted that Iran had responded in a "reasonable" manner.

Nasser Kanaani, a spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry, said during a news conference that "America and Europe need an agreement more than Iran" because of the procrastination of the Americans and the passivity of the European sides.

Ned Price, a spokesperson for the US state department, refuted that claim, telling reporters in Washington that it was "just not true."

According to Price, the United States was heartened that Iran appeared to have withdrawn demands like having its Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps removed from the list of foreign terrorist organisations on the United States.

"That's part of the reason why a deal is closer now than it was two weeks ago. But the outcome of these ongoing discussions still remains uncertain as gaps do remain,"Price said, adding that the US was moving as swiftly as it could to offer its reply.

Iranian-Americans detained in Iran on security-related allegations have been urged to leave by Washington. Iran has sought the release of seven Iranians jailed on suspicion of violating American sanctions.

Tehran is prepared to exchange inmates, Kanaani said, adding that it is a separate matter and has nothing to do with the ongoing talks to resurrect the 2015 agreement.

Ben & Jerry’s failed in its attempt on Monday (August 22) to stop Unilever, its parent company, from selling its ice cream in West Bank settlements, which the US company claimed would go against its core principles.

Ben & Jerry’s is an American ice cream company founded in 1978, well known for its supportive contribution towards nature and human rights.

The firm took the step of requesting an injunction after Unilever disclosed selling ice cream to an Israeli licence holder.

Last year, Ben & Jerry’s said that it would no longer sell its ice cream in the Palestinian territories as the idea is inconsistent with the company’s principles, but will continue to sell in Israel.

According to the US federal judge, the ice cream company had ‘failed to demonstrate' that the decision to sell the products in the Israeli-occupied territories caused it irreparable harm, AFP reported.

However, Israeli licence holder Tel Avi Zinger continued to make the ice cream in his facility and supply it to the Israeli settlements.

On July 5, Ben & Jerry’s requested the dissolution of any agreements authorising the sale or distribution of its products in the West Bank and the referral of any future similar transactions for approval by its board of directors.

As per the case, Unilever’s decision was taken without authorisation from Ben & Jerry’s Independent Board and violated the merger agreement.

The US district court judge disagreed, saying it was "too speculative" to think that the company’s narrative may be compromised or that the customers could become confused about its underlying beliefs.

Wednesday (August 24) marks Ukraine’s 31 years of independence from Soviet rule and also six months since the Russian invasion often referred to as Moscow's 'special military operation.’

The US state department, in a security advisory, stated that Russia is speeding up its attempts to undertake strikes against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government sites in the coming days.

The US embassy in Kyiv asked all US citizens who are still in Ukraine to leave the nation immediately.

The United States on Monday condemned the targeted killing of civilians, saying it stands against such practices, whether they occur in Ukraine or Russia.

The reason behind the targeted killing by Russia is the killing of Darya Dugina, daughter of a close adviser to the Russian president, in a car bomb blast on Saturday night.

The US has so far imposed sanctions on nearly 5,000 individuals since the beginning of the invasion on February 24, the State Department said.

White House officials recently cited that Chinese President Xi Jinping, in a telephone conversation with US President Joe Biden last month, has asked to prevent Nancy Pelosi, the US House Speaker, from visiting Taiwan. However, the US President, in response, said that he ‘could not oblige’ and that it was the speaker’s own choice to decide on her overseas visits as the US Congress is an independent government branch, The Washington Post reported.

Additionally, Biden also warned his counterpart against using provocative and coercive tactics during Pelosi’s visit. National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said, "Members of Congress have gone to Taiwan for decades and will continue to do so. Speaker Pelosi had every right to go, and her visit is consistent with our long-standing One-China policy," the newspaper quoted. However, since 1997, no US House Speaker had visited Taiwan until Pelosi at the beginning of August this year.
