A move by North Carolina police sheriff to arm school resource officers with assault rifles is meeting incredulous reactions from gun reform advocates. Buddy Harwood, the police sheriff has said that he felt obliged to do so after shootout at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, which saw 19 children being killed by a gunman.

“Having just a deputy armed with a handgun isn’t enough to stop these animals,” Harwood said in a video statement he posted to Facebook in June.

“My school resource officers will not have to wait, retreat, or have to leave the situation to get the weaponry to deal with that threat.”

Local media reported that the sheriff's plan involved military-style weapons to be locked in undisclosed location in county's schools.

“I think it is absolute insanity. This won’t save a single child, or stop a single unknown and potential future act of violence,” said Fred Guttenberg, as quoted by The Guardian. Guttenberg's own daughter was killed in shooting in Parkland, Florida in 2018

“However, it will immediately help to sell more guns and make this sheriff more popular with the gun lobby that he is hoping to be a champion with,” he said.

Right to bear arms has been enshrined in the US Constitution. Each time a school shootout, such as the one in Texas, takes place, there is increased clamour in the US for gun controls. But such efforts are always opposed by the politically influential gun lobby in the country.

Move to place assault rifles in US schools draws strong reaction

A member of Islamic State cell known as "The Beatles" was sentenced to life in prison for his involvement in the killings of US journalists and aid worker in Syria. The sentence was handed to El Shafee Elsheikh (34), the IS member by judge TS Ellis. The life imprisonment sentence is without parole. The judge called Elsheikh's behaviour "horrific, barbaric, brutal and of course criminal."

Elsheikh, a British citizen, was part of an Islamic State cell nicknamed "The Beatles" because of the English accent of its members. The cell beheaded American hostages in areas of the Middle East controlled by the militant group. He was found guilty on four counts of hostage-taking and four counts of conspiracy after a two-week trial.

The victims' relatives and friends sat in the front rows of the courtroom and were visibly shaken during the course of the hearing as tears rolled down their eyes and they consoled each other. Elsheikh was sentenced to eight concurrent life sentences.

At the peak of its power from 2014-2017, Islamic State ruled over millions of people and claimed responsibility for or inspired attacks in dozens of cities around the world.

Its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, declared a caliphate over a quarter of Iraq and Syria in 2014, before he was killed in a raid by US special forces in Syria in 2019 as the group's rule collapsed.

Elsheikh, who was born in Sudan and raised in London, was accused of conspiring to kill four American hostages: James Foley, Steven Sotloff, Peter Kassig and Kayla Mueller.

Foley and Sotloff were journalists and Kassig was an aid worker. All of them were killed in videotaped beheadings. Mueller was raped repeatedly by al-Baghdadi before her death in Syria, US officials have said.

The deaths of Foley, Sotloff and Kassig were confirmed in 2014; Mueller's death was confirmed in early 2015.

On the Mar-a-Lago raid, a US federal judge said he is planning to unseal parts of the affidavit used to justify the search of former president Donald Trump's home. Meanwhile, DoJ ordered to file redacted affidavit by August 25.

The Mar-a-Lago Raid: Affidavit on Trump house search to be out?

US President Joe Biden is sending out clear and pleasant messages to the American people ahead of the midterms in November that his administration cares for the American people unlike the ultra-right-wing republicans who only want to endorse ex-President Donald Trump`s claims of a stolen election, fueling Capitol Hill riots and "fake claims" of a bad economy.

The Democrats Department of Education`s decision to cancel $3.9 billion in student loan debt associated with ITT Technical Institute, a private, for-profit educational chain that went bankrupt six years ago is a clear signal to the students that it has conceded their demands and cares. The department will automatically cancel all loans for students who attended ITT from January 2005 to September 2016, affecting roughly 208,000 borrowers.

The debt forgiveness comes atop Biden`s signing into law the historic climate change, health care, and inflation reduction besides the semiconductor bill and a slew of other measures aimed at improving the general welfare of the Americans, especially the poor, urban middle class families with low drug prices, tax incentives and creating more jobs.

Before declaring bankruptcy, ITT had been under investigation for a variety of deceptive practices. "The evidence shows that for years, ITT`s leaders intentionally misled students about the quality of their programs in order to profit off federal student loan programs, with no regard for the hardship this would cause," Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement Tuesday.

Cardona also said that the Biden administration would "continue to stand up for borrowers who`ve been cheated by their colleges, while working to strengthen oversight and enforcement to protect today`s students from similar deception and abuse." Including this most recent announcement, the Biden administration has forgiven nearly $32 billion in student loans.

Even as Budget hawks lobby against broad debt forgiveness, the Biden administration is currently considering what to do about the nation`s $1.5 trillion student loan portfolio, payments on which were suspended repeatedly during the Covid-19 crisis.

Though the most recent extension of the suspension expires at the end of August, many analysts expect the administration to extend the pause again, at least through the end of the year, according to multiple reports in the US media.

Equally, some student loan activists have been calling on the White House to forgive student loan debt, in full or in part, with forgiveness of $10,000 per borrower being one frequently cited option.

On Tuesday, the Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget, a fiscally conservative group that generally opposes student debt forgiveness, published an analysis of the cost of doing so.

Extending the payment pause for the rest of the year would cost $20 billion, CRFB estimated. And cancelling $10,000 in debt for middle- and low-income borrowers (defined as earning less than $300,000 per year) would cost $230 billion over 10 years.

The CRFB analysts note that the cost would wipe out much of the budgetary savings provided by the climate and health bill signed into law by President Biden on Tuesday. "Combined, these policies would consume nearly ten years of deficit reduction from the Inflation Reduction Act," CRFB said.

Following two days of witness evidence from abortion specialists, providers, and the state's chief medical officer, a Michigan court on Friday barred county prosecutors from going forward with their plans to enforce the state's 1931 ban on abortion.

After Roe v. Wade was overturned by the US Supreme Court earlier this month, the Texas Court of Appeals stated earlier this month that county prosecutors were not covered by a May order and may enforce the law.

Following a request from attorneys for Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer and hours after the August 1 appeals court ruling, Oakland County Judge Jacob Cunningham issued a restraining order against the county prosecutors, as reported by CBS news.

Republicans in Kent, Jackson, and Macomb counties have stated that they should be authorised to enforce the 1931 legislation, despite the fact that the majority of prosecutors in counties with abortion facilities have said they will not enforce the prohibition.

Before issuing the preliminary injunction, Cunningham heard to arguments Wednesday and Thursday in Pontiac. This is intended to make abortion lawful throughout the state until the Michigan Supreme Court or voters may decide in the autumn.

After the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, Michigan passed a law in 1931 outlawing abortion in all circumstances besides those involving the mother's life. In May, Judge Elizabeth Gleicher ordered a preliminary injunction that prevented the dormant ban from retroactively takin

Later, the state Court of Appeals ruled that the preliminary injunction only extended to the office of the attorney general, which opened the door for county prosecutors to charge providers with a felony.

Having county prosecutors determine whether to enforce the 1931 ban would lead to uncertainty and push many providers to stop offering abortions, according to attorneys for Whitmer and Democratic prosecutors.

"We can't expect doctors to read the minds of a prosecutor and to try to figure out what a prosecutor thinks that life saving exception means. That is precisely what would happen if the preliminary injunction is not issued," Washtenaw County Prosecutor Eli Savit said during closing arguments Thursday.

In closing remarks, David Kallman, a lawyer for two Republican county prosecutors, argued that granting a preliminary injunction isn't the best way to amend the law.

"It's the right of all the people of the state of Michigan to weigh in and vote or go through their representatives and do it through the proper legislative and elected process to change a law," Kallman said.

The future of abortion access in Michigan is anticipated to be determined by a ballot measure that collected 753,759 valid signatures in July and sought to incorporate abortion rights into the state constitution. The state's Board of Canvassers must still give the amendment its final approval before it can appear on the ballot in November.

Because Whitmer and Democratic Attorney General Dana Nessel have made abortion rights a key part of their reelection campaigns, the state's abortion laws are expected to have a significant impact on the general election in Michigan in November.

Facebook parent company Meta on Thursday (August 18) announced that it has banned one of the United States' most influential anti-vaccination groups, the Children's Health Defense (CHD) from its social media platform for spreading misinformation about the coronavirus pandemic.

Talking to AFP Meta spokesperson Aaron Simpson said that CHD's Facebook and Instagram accounts have been closed on Wednesday and that the ban was placed after repeated violations of Meta's misinformation rules.

CHD which was founded by the nephew of the late president John F. Kennedy has accused Meta of acting as a proxy for the government and attempting to stifle its free speech rights and muzzle criticism of the administration.

In June, just days after the Biden administration removed the Chinese-claimed island from its Asia-focused economic strategy intended to challenge China's expanding influence, Washington and Taipei presented the U.S.-Taiwan Initiative on 21st-Century Trade. Deputy United States Trade Representative Sarah Bianchi said in a statement, "We plan to pursue an ambitious schedule for achieving high-standard commitments and meaningful outcomes covering the eleven trade areas in the negotiating mandate that will help build a fairer, more prosperous and resilient 21st-century economy."

According to data made public by American safety regulators, automakers recorded roughly 400 crashes involving vehicles with automated driver-assist systems, that included 273 Teslas.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issued a warning against using the statistics to contrast different automakers, claiming that they weren't weighted according to the volume of each manufacturer's vehicles employing the systems or their mileage.

From July 2021 to May 15, the crashes were reported. According to CNBC, Autopilot, "full self-driving," traffic aware cruise control, and other driver-assist technologies that have some steering and speed control were all in use when Tesla's vehicles crashed. The systems are in around 830,000 automobiles owned by the corporation.

The NTSB released this image of a 2021 Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor electric car that was involved in a fatal accident near Miami that killed two people on Sept. 13, 2021.

More than 100 automakers and autonomous vehicle technology companies were ordered by the NHTSA in June 2021 to report serious crashes as soon as they become aware of them and to reveal less serious crashes by the 15th day of the following month. The organisation is analysing the systems' functionality to determine whether new restrictions could be required.

As reported by the New York Times, the administrator of the organisation, Steven Cliff, stated that when more data is gathered, "NHTSA will be better equipped to identify any emerging hazards or trends and learn more about how these technologies are operating in the real world."

Tesla may have a high crash rate because it employs telematics to track its cars and obtain real-time crash information. The NHTSA stated that because other automakers lack this capability, their submissions may be delayed or incomplete.

Nearly 70% of the 392 crashes recorded by the twelve automakers were caused by Tesla. Although the Austin, Texas, carmaker refers to its technologies as Autopilot and "Full Self-Driving," it insists that drivers must always be prepared to take over control of the vehicles. In addition, the NHTSA reported that six people suffered significant injuries and five people died in crashes utilising driver-assist systems.

According to NHTSA, manufacturers were not required to record how many vehicles they have on the road with the devices, how far those vehicles have gone, or when the systems are being used. According to an agency official, those numbers are not currently quantifiable.

NHTSA may, however, later look for such data. In the interim, it is now able to learn about accidents much more quickly than in the past thanks to the additional data. The government stated that it is currently using the crash data to look for trends and discuss them with the companies.

In a major development, United States agency for International developments has announced three aid packages with $150 million. US has announced aid but refused to release frozen Afghan funds.

US announces $150 Mn aid for Afghanistan

After the assassination of al-Qaeda chief Ayman-al Zawahiri in Kabul, the Biden administration chose not to release any of the $7 billion of foreign assets held by Afghanistan’s central bank on US soil and has halted negotiations with the Taliban on the funds. But at the same time, in order to strengthen international assistance, USAID, the global humanitarian assistance arm of the US, has announced three aid packages worth $150 million for Afghanistan.

This week marks the one-year somber anniversary of the Taliban takeover in Afghanistan. Following the militant group’s announcement of banning girls from attending schools after sixth grade, this investment is the most recent one to upgrade different sectors in the country. The USAID will give $30 million to the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, for the betterment of Afghan women. An amount of $40 million will go to United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the remaining $80 million to Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Biden administration officials cited that Zawahiri’s living safely in Afghanistan, until the drone strike killed him, played a significant role in the decision to freeze funds. This decision also dashes expectations for an economic resurgence in the country.

In conversation with WSJ, US Representative for Afghanistan Thomas West said that the Taliban’s hiding the al-Qaeda chief underlines deep concerns the country has regarding the flow of funds to the terrorist group. When further asked about whether the group can obtain aid for people, the representative responded that the authorities don’t see the group as being responsible enough for managing the assets.

In the past, US President Joe Biden stated that he intends to give the families of 9/11 victims half of the $7 billion fund and the remaining to a trust fund for humanitarian relief to the Afghan people. However, considering that it would ultimately be the Taliban delivering the aid, this option seems out of the relevance line. However, critics have criticised Biden’s decision stating it was an unfair collective punishment for the Afghans.

However, it seems as if the US is now trying to normalise relations with the Taliban. The latest engagements made by the US in form of aid are being looked at as an engagement and reach out to the Taliban to bring the relation back on track.

But now one question arises can the Biden administration after the Zawahiri’s killing go further? The US would want further information on this. On the other hand, the Taliban apparently be seeking recognition and a bailout from its financial crisis.

US refuses to release $7bn frozen funds to Afghanistan, but commits to $150mn aid packages

The massive Space Launch System moon rocket from NASA, which is topped with an uncrewed astronaut capsule, started an hours-long crawl to its launchpad on Tuesday night in preparation for the behemoth's first test flight this month.

The 98-metre-tall rocket is set to launch its initial journey into orbit on August 29 without any human crew. It will be an important, long-awaited demonstration mission to the moon for NASA's Artemis programme, the country's multibillion-dollar endeavour to send people back to the moon as training for trips to Mars.

Around 10 p.m. EDT (0200 GMT) on Tuesday, the Space Launch System left its assembly building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and started the six-kilometre (four-mile) journey to its launchpad. The Space Launch System has been developed over the previous ten years with the help of Boeing Co.

The rollout will take about 11 hours at less than 1 mph (1.6 kph).

The NASA Orion astronaut capsule, made by Lockheed Martin Corp., is perched atop the rocket. It is intended to split from the rocket in outer space, transport people to the moon, and then come together with another spacecraft to deliver astronauts to the lunar surface.

Without any humans inside, the Orion spacecraft will launch from the Space Launch System on August 29 for the Artemis 1 mission. It will orbit the moon for 42 days before returning to Earth for an ocean splashdown.

On September 2 and September 5, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has backup launch dates in case terrible launch weather or a minor technical issue prevents a launch on August 29.
