<p>Meanwhile, Egypt has announced a new policy which would require all citizens of neighbouring Sudan to obtain visas before entering their border, said the foreign ministry, on Saturday, citing a crackdown on “illegal activities” including fraud.</p>

<h2><strong>What is happening in Sudan?</strong></h2>

<p>In a series of attempted and failed truces and ceasefires, the one that recently expired offered some respite to the residents in the capital city of Khartoum who were able to leave their houses and stock up on food and other essentials.</p>

<p>Additionally, people in the country have also said that the fighting has intensified in recent weeks including in the densely populated neighbourhood of Haj Youssef in Bahri.&nbsp;Bahri is one of three adjoining cities, along with Khartoum and Omdurman.</p>

<p>Notably, the ceasefire had been announced by the United States and Saudi Arabia mediators who said if they failed to adhere to it, it may break off mediation efforts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes as several ceasefire agreements have been violated and both sides blamed each other for doing so. The mediators said they “share the frustration of the Sudanese people about the uneven implementation of previous ceasefires”.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Fighting continues after brief respite</strong></h2>

<p>The ceasefire ended at 6:00 am (local time) and as per reports only minutes later, on Sunday, the capital city was rocked with explosions from shelling and clashes. The artillery fire resumed in the north of Omdurman while clashes erupted in southern and central Khartoum, reported Reuters, citing residents.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The one-day lull was “like a dream” that evaporated, said Nasreddin Ahmed, a resident of south Khartoum, as per AFP. Similarly, Musab Saleh, a 38-year-old resident of southern Khartoum, said that the “truce made us relax a bit, but the war and fear are returning today,” reported Reuters.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Egypt toughens visa restrictions for Sudan</strong></h2>

<p>The Egyptian foreign ministry announced new visa restrictions for Sudanese citizens which has reversed the longstanding exemption for children, women and elderly men. According to the local monitoring group, at least 1,800 people have died due to the fighting, while more than 1.9 million have been displaced.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thousands of people have fled Sudan and taken refuge in neighbouring countries,&nbsp;including&nbsp; Egypt where more than 200,000 people are reported to have fled since the conflict began. As per the new rules, those Sudanese who had previously been exempted from visas which included women of all ages, children under 16 and anyone over 50.</p>

<p>However, the ministry has stressed that the new requirements were not designed to “prevent or limit” the entry of Sudanese nationals but rather to stop “illegal activities by individuals and groups on the Sudanese side of the border, who forged entry visas” for profit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “Egypt has welcomed more than 200,000 Sudanese citizens since the start of the crisis…adding to the approximately five million Sudanese citizens who were already present (before the conflict).”&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Why is this shortage? What are the consequences?</strong></h2>

<p>As per&nbsp;NBC reports, over a dozen medications have been witnessing limited supply in the United States in recent months.&nbsp;These include the anticancer drugs carboplatin and cisplatin, which are commonly used to treat non-small-cell lung cancer as well as testicular, gynecologic, breast, bladder, head, and neck malignancies.&nbsp;Around 10-20 per cent&nbsp;of all cancer patients are treated with cisplatin and similar medications, as reported by the NBC.</p>

<p>As per&nbsp;a study conducted by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network last month, carboplatin and cisplatin were in insufficient supply at almost all of the centres.</p>

<p>A California cancer patient who was denied&nbsp;access to cisplatin in April by his insurance provider cited the major scarcity in a Financial Times interview.</p>

<p>"Currently, cisplatin is only permitted for malignancies that can be cured." Michael Griffith, a 51-year-old father of three, explained that his disease is incurable.&nbsp;"Thus I am not currently eligible for it," he said.</p>

<p>As per&nbsp;the University of Utah Drug Information Service, which was cited by CNN, about 20 chemo medicines were difficult to procure&nbsp;by the end of March.</p>

<p>The CEO of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, Dr&nbsp;Robert Carlson, was reported by CNN as stating, "This is an untenable scenario. We are hearing from oncologists and chemists all throughout the nation who are currently rushing to discover suitable options for treating their cancer patients."</p>

<p>More than a third of cancer centres with carboplatin shortages claimed they were unable to treat every patient using the recommended dose and timing.</p>

<p>“We were relieved by survey results that show patients are still able to get life-saving care, but it comes at a burden to our overtaxed medical facilities,” Carlson told CNN.</p>

<p>“We need to work together to improve the current situation and prevent it from happening again in the future,” he explained .&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Ramifications of switching cancer medicines</strong></h2>

<p>Switching cancer medications has actual ramifications.&nbsp;According to Jennifer Rubatt, an oncology specialist in Denver, Colorado, "In late April and May, I had to make drug substitutions for newly diagnosed ovarian cancer patients because we did not have the sort of first-choice drugs available," she stated in an interview with the Financial Times.</p>

<p>In the words of Mike Ganio, a researcher at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists who focuses on drug shortages, the issue began to emerge earlier this year.</p>

<p>“I think it went from being a shortage to being a really bad shortage really quickly,” he told the Associated Press.</p>

<p>A facility in India that manufactures both medications halted production after an inspection revealed quality issues, prompting Ganio's organisation to notify the lack of cisplatin in January and the shortfall of carboplatin in late March.</p>

<p>The producer Intas Pharmaceuticals provides around half of the market share for cisplatin, according to Erin Fox, senior pharmacy director at University of Utah Health and an expert on medication shortages.</p>

<p>In an effort to address the chemotherapeutic shortage, the US Food and Drug Administration has taken some action.</p>

<p>The organisation is permitting the temporary importation of select cisplatin formulations that have received foreign approval from businesses that have registered with the FDA.</p>

<p>The FDA has authorised cisplatin maker Qilu Pharmaceutical to ship the medication to the United States, according to CNBC.</p>

<p>As per&nbsp;NBC reports, the medication, which comes in 50-milligram bottles, will be exported to the US and distributed by Qilu and Canadian pharmaceutical company Apotex.</p>

<p>The End Drug Shortages Alliance's board chair, Eric Tichy, was reported by the publication as calling this a "good plan."</p>

<p>"It will hopefully help more patients access product and not have their treatments delayed," Fox told USA Today.</p>

<p>FDA commissioner Dr Robert Califf tweeted, “​​The public should rest assured that we will continue all efforts within our authority to help the industry that manufactures and distributes these drugs meet all patient needs for the oncology drugs impacted by shortages.”</p>

<p>Modi's followers see this as an "anti-national" move as they expect (somewhat naively) that post-colonial ideas of national unity should be the norm. But India is no longer a freshly-minted independent nation. It is a colourful, noisy, reasonably mature democracy.</p>

<p>On a recent visit to Australia, Modi pointed to the fact that his address to the Indian diaspora was attended by both the current Labor Prime Minister and the previous one from the Liberal Party sitting now in the opposition. While he did get a rockstar tag for his Sydney Olympic Park address to a 21,000-strong crowd, it is equally true that he was criticised in Canberra by Indian dissidents and human rights groups joining hands with Australian Greens at a private event hosted in Australia's national parliament premises where a BBC documentary critical of Modi was screened -- whereas it is banned in India.</p>

<p>Historians and rights activists do not forget things in a hurry -- and that is the beauty of liberalism and democracy. As significantly liberal democracies, Australia and the US are more accepting of this truth. When he actually lands in the US, private conversations on Modi will not be limited to what is said in public by officials. Track III realism is part of the new normal.<br />

According to a Bloomberg analysis, the wage disparity will be 77 cents to the dollar in 2021 if part-time and seasonal workers are included.</p>

<p>According to the study, salary equality between men and women who work full-time, year-round will not occur until 2056. For many female employees of colour, this will be considerably longer.</p>

<p>The United States and the United Kingdom on Thursday (June 8) struck a fresh strategic pact underlining the "special relationship" to tackle China, Russia and economic instability. US President Joe Biden and UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak adopted an "Atlantic Declaration" which is aimed at boosting industry ties on defence and renewable energy. The countries have come together in the face of growing competition from China.</p>

<p>Both leader met in a White House summit and discussed Russia's invasion of Ukraine and Artificial Intelligence (AI) which has seen rapid development in recent months.</p>

<p>But Sunak came away empty-handed on Britain's ambitions for a post-Brexit free-trade agreement with Washington, settling instead to tack along with Biden's plan to craft a new green economy through vast industrial subsidies.</p>

<p>"We face new challenges to international stability -- from authoritarian states such as Russia and the People's Republic of China; disruptive technologies; non-state actors; and transnational challenges like climate change," the declaration read.</p>

The agency said that flights into New York City's LaGuardia Airport were being delayed with an average of 54 minutes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Flights at nearby Newark Liberty Airport were also getting delayed due to visibility issues. The FAA has warned that it may also need to decide to delay traffic into Washington and Charlotte, North Carolina. Earlier, the FAA had temporarily halted flights to LaGuardia and Philadelphia from the US northeast, Ohio and Mid-Atlantic.</p>

<p>United Airlines announced that it was waiving change fees and fair difference for travellers wanting to reschedule trips on Thursday and Friday (June 9) for cities that are impacted by smoky conditions including New York, Buffalo, Washington, Philadelphia, Syracuse, New York,&nbsp;Hartford, Connecticut, and Columbus, Ohio.</p>

<p>Authorities across Canada are facing logistical challenges as they juggle resources and call in reinforcements from abroad. These included more than 1000 firefighters from Australia, the United States, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, France, Spain and Portugal.</p>

<p>Wildfires are common in Canada each year but this time the situation is being described as 'unprecedented'. There are wildfires in almost every Canadian province.</p>

<p>"The distribution of fires from coast to coast this year is unusual," said Michael Norton, an official with Canada's Natural Resources ministry as quoted by AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"At this time of year, fires usually occur only on one side of the country at a time, most often in the West."</p>

<p>Millions of hectares of land have been scorched due to the wildfires till now and major Canadian cities are threatened leading to evacuation of thousands of residents.</p>

<p>Alberta, Nova Scotia and Quebec have also asked Ottawa to send in the military.</p>

<p>To tackle wildfires this time, military's firefighting capabilities are being expanded. They have an uphill battle ahead of them.</p>

<p>"When a big fire is burning, it is impossible for the firefighters to make a direct attack," explains Marc-Andre Parisien, a specialist in fire risk management. He was quoted by AFP.</p>

<p>And then "sending water bombers to douse flames 30 metres high is like spitting on a campfire, it is ineffective," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One solution is to use controlled burns to halt advancing blazes, but with big fires, "only a big rain" will extinguish them.</p>
