<p>But the court has moved sharply to the right since then, with six conservative justices now and only three liberals.</p>

<p>“I will say that we don’t believe that this was an intentional act. We don’t believe any bad intention or sabotage of any sort was behind this. It was a human error that resulted in the loss of the extensive amount of research which now needs to be recreated,” Michael told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>According to the attorney, this research was a combination of about 20-25 years of study. It was related to the molecular mechanisms or makeup of solar energy conversion for natural and artificial synthetic systems and synthetic reactions.<br />

The research also looked at cell cultures in incredibly low temperatures, and it related to the viability and sustainability of solar energy and future advances in the development and use of solar energy.</p>

<p>However, when asked if it will take another 20-25 years to restore the research now, Michael said that he doesn’t believe that it is going to be another 20 years for it because they already have the data. They will not be completely reinventing it, but they will recreate the culture of that research.<br />

However, most cases are still under investigation. Whereas, since the beginning of this year, including the one on Tuesday, the police have recovered five bodies from the lake.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the death of 30-year-old, Jason John, in February was declared as an accidental drowning, by the Travis County Medical Examiner’s Office (TCME), said the media report. While others are still under investigation.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The serial killer rumours&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>In April, APD Assistant Chief Jeff Greenwalt told the news channel, that there is no strong connection to the deaths and, “There are a lot of allegations that there’s a serial killer, but there’s no proof or evidence in any of our investigations to sustain that.”</p>

<p>This was after the two bodies were recovered from the lake, in the same month. The police have repeatedly dismissed claims that a serial killer is involved while the APD has been criticised for alleged inaction by the locals.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per media reports, locals believe that the serial killer is targeting young men around the age of 30. Aside from Clifton Axtell who was 40, other bodies recovered from the lake, this year, were of men in their 30s. This includes Jason John (30), Johnathan Honey (33), and Christopher Hays-Clark (30).</p>

<h2><strong>What did the APD say about the rumours?</strong></h2>

<p>“The Austin Police Department is aware of speculations regarding the recent drownings in Lady Bird Lake. Although these cases are still under investigation and evidence is being analyzed, at this time, there is no evidence in any of these cases to support allegations of foul play,” said the APD, in a statement, on April 4.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added, “While each incident has occurred at the lake, the circumstances, exact locations, and demographics surrounding these cases vary.” The police department also said it is working closely with the TCME and that the results of the autopsies, so far, “have not revealed any trauma to the bodies nor indication of foul play.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The statement added, “One common theme of the drownings in Austin this year is the combination of alcohol and easy access to Lady Bird Lake, which has numerous access points. Many of the access points can be challenging to see at night. The parks in which most of these drownings have occurred are park areas that close at 10:00 pm and occur after the park closes.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>When asked about the serial killer rumours, Knouse, on Tuesday reiterated that the investigations surrounding bodies found in the lake are independent and would release any information “that was concerning”.<br />

"For decades, the Supreme Court recognised a college’s freedom to decide how to build a diverse student body and provide opportunity. Today, the Court walked away from precedent, effectively ending affirmative action in higher education. I strongly disagree with this decision," the tweet read.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Our colleges are stronger when they are racially diverse. And America is stronger because we are tapping into our full range of talent. Today's Supreme Court decision is not the last word," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This comes after the decision by the apex court dealt a significant blow to affirmative action policies which aimed at increasing diversity on college campuses.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The court's conservative justices, with dissenting opinions from the liberal justices, voted in favour of Students for Fair Admissions, an organisation led by anti-affirmative action activist Edward Blum. <p>Earlier this year, a Chinese 'spy'&nbsp;balloon was spotted in the skies of the United States and was later shot down by jets over the Atlantic Ocean — an incident which escalated tensions between Washington and Beijing. Now, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday (June 28), citing preliminary findings from a closely held probe, that the spy balloon used American technology to&nbsp;collect audio-visual information.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Citing US officials, WSJ said that analysis from several US defence and intelligence agencies found that the balloon carried commercially available US gear, along with more specialised Chinese sensors and other equipment to collect photographs, video and other information to transmit to China.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The report said that the findings support a conclusion that the balloon was intended for spying, and not for weather monitoring as claimed by China. WSJ said that the balloon did not seem to send data from its eight-day passage over Alaska, Canada and some other contiguous US states back to China.&nbsp;</p>

Chinese 'spy' balloon reportedly used US technology to spy on Americans

<p>The United States’ recently passed Pregnant Workers Fairness Act (PWFA) went into effect on Tuesday (June 27). In line with this, millions of pregnant employees across the US would have access to expanded protections.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The PWFA comes after over a decade of campaigning, which would not only bar employers from discriminating against pregnant workers but also provide “reasonable accommodations” for their employees to continue working.</p>

<h2><strong>What is the PWFA?</strong></h2>

<p>According to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) website, the new law only applies to accommodations while existing laws like the illegal firing of employees or discrimination against workers on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, will continue to be enforced by the government agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The new federal law mandates “reasonable accommodations” for pregnant workers unless doing so would impose an “undue hardship” on the employer. “An ‘undue hardship’ is a significant difficulty or expense for the employer,” said the EEOC. It could be a cost to the employer, the employer’s resources and/or their operations.</p>

<p>PWFA protects employees and applicants of “covered employers” which includes private and public sector companies with at least 15 employees, Congress, federal agencies, employment agencies, and labour organisations.</p>

<p>In line with the new law, employers cannot force an employee to accept an accommodation, like taking a leave, without a discussion with the employee first. The organisation also cannot deny a job or other employment opportunities to a qualified or applicant-based employee who requires reasonable accommodation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Furthermore, the employer cannot require an employee to take a leave if other options under reasonable accommodation can be provided which would allow the employee to continue working.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The organisation can also not retaliate against an individual for reporting or opposing discrimination under the PWFA or hinder their participation in any proceedings, like an investigation, as per the new federal law.</p>

<h2><strong>How does it protect pregnant women in the workplace?</strong></h2>

<p>The new law is said to have effectively bridged the legal gap between the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) with the aim that millions of workers in the US would not have to choose between their paycheck and a healthy pregnancy. Furthermore, it also protects women who would otherwise fall through the cracks between the two laws.&nbsp;</p>

<p>So far, ADA which has been in place for over three decades now prevents discrimination against employees with disabilities and also requires employers to make accommodations for them. However, pregnancy, under this law, or by itself is not considered a disability which mandates accommodation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, the PDA bars employers from discriminating against workers on the basis of their pregnancy be it hiring or firing someone. Under the PDA, which was enacted in 1978, pregnant workers would only be treated as well as, or equal to, the way that employers accommodate non-pregnant people “similar in their ability or inability to work.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>Therefore, in some cases, pregnant employees would be expected to carry out work just like others are under PDA. Neither law offered protection for otherwise healthy pregnant workers with limitations that come with carrying a child.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Thus, the PWFA would require employers to provide reasonable accommodations for known pregnancy-related limitations regardless of how they are treating their non-pregnant employees or even if their pregnancy symptoms are not severe enough to constitute a disability.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>What are these ‘reasonable accommodations’?</strong></h2>

<p>Under the newly enacted law, some of these “reasonable accommodations” include, time off from work to recover from childbirth, pregnancy loss and postpartum depression.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Other reasonable expectations include changes to the work environment day-to-day, like additional breaks to rest, drink water or eat; receiving closer parking; having flexible hours to attend prenatal or postnatal appointments; excused from strenuous activities, and so on.</p>

<h2><strong>No need for ‘magic words’</strong></h2>

<p>The PWFA also says that the condition which would require or necessitate accommodation must be “known” to the employer, which essentially means that it should be communicated to the organisation by the employee or their representative.&nbsp;<br />

However, the pregnant employee should not have to use “magic words” or legal terms, in order to receive the right to accommodation. Furthermore, once the limitations of the employee are known to the employer they could either grant the request or offer another way to accommodate the needs of the pregnant worker.&nbsp;</p>

<p>An employment attorney, Christine Bestor Townsend, told CBS MoneyWatch, “Employees don't have to use any magic language. Employers need to recognize the requests that come in and be prepared to deal with those requests.” She also noted that since pregnancy is temporary the “hardship standard is harder”.</p>

<h2><strong>Rights groups hail the legislation</strong></h2>

<p>Over the years, several employees have come forward with their stories and the hardships they had to face in the workplace while they were pregnant or postpartum. Speaking about her experience, Natasha Jackson said that she faced discrimination, over a decade ago, that eventually led to her termination which nearly drove her family toward homelessness.</p>

<p>In an interview with ABC News, Jackson said that she was three months pregnant with her third child while working as an account manager at the local furniture store in Charleston, South Carolina. However, she was placed on a 12-week unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) after her doctor recommended that she avoid lifting anything more than nine kilogrammes.</p>

<p>“The PWFA is the culmination of a 10-year-long campaign to close gaps in civil rights laws so pregnant workers are not pushed out of jobs or forced to risk their health when they require reasonable accommodations on the job, like a water bottle to stay hydrated or a transfer away from strenuous heavy lifting,” Vice President of an employee advocacy group, A Better Balance, Elizabeth Gedmark, told CBS.<br />

The PWFA comes after over a decade of campaigning, which would not only bar employers from discriminating against pregnant workers but also provide “reasonable accommodations” for their employees to continue working. What is the PWFA? According to the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) website, the new law only applies to accommodations while existing laws like the illegal firing of employees or discrimination against workers on the basis of pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions, will continue to be enforced by the government agency. The new federal law mandates “reasonable accommodations” for pregnant workers unless doing so would impose an “undue hardship” on the employer. “An ‘undue hardship’ is a significant difficulty or expense for the employer,” said the EEOC. It could be a cost to the employer, the employer’s resources and/or their operations. PWFA protects employees and applicants of “covered employers” which includes private and public sector companies with at least 15 employees, Congress, federal agencies, employment agencies, and labour organisations. In line with the new law, employers cannot force an employee to accept an accommodation, like taking a leave, without a discussion with the employee first. The organisation also cannot deny a job or other employment opportunities to a qualified or applicant-based employee who requires reasonable accommodation. Furthermore, the employer cannot require an employee to take a leave if other options under reasonable accommodation can be provided which would allow the employee to continue working. The organisation can also not retaliate against an individual for reporting or opposing discrimination under the PWFA or hinder their participation in any proceedings, like an investigation, as per the new federal law. How does it protect pregnant women in the workplace? The new law is said to have effectively bridged the legal gap between the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Pregnancy Discrimination Act (PDA) with the aim that millions of workers in the US would not have to choose between their paycheck and a healthy pregnancy. Furthermore, it also protects women who would otherwise fall through the cracks between the two laws. So far, ADA which has been in place for over three decades now prevents discrimination against employees with disabilities and also requires employers to make accommodations for them. However, pregnancy, under this law, or by itself is not considered a disability which mandates accommodation. Similarly, the PDA bars employers from discriminating against workers on the basis of their pregnancy be it hiring or firing someone. Under the PDA, which was enacted in 1978, pregnant workers would only be treated as well as, or equal to, the way that employers accommodate non-pregnant people “similar in their ability or inability to work.” Therefore, in some cases, pregnant employees would be expected to carry out work just like others are under PDA. Neither law offered protection for otherwise healthy pregnant workers with limitations that come with carrying a child. Thus, the PWFA would require employers to provide reasonable accommodations for known pregnancy-related limitations regardless of how they are treating their non-pregnant employees or even if their pregnancy symptoms are not severe enough to constitute a disability. What are these ‘reasonable accommodations’? Under the newly enacted law, some of these “reasonable accommodations” include, time off from work to recover from childbirth, pregnancy loss and postpartum depression. Other reasonable expectations include changes to the work environment day-to-day, like additional breaks to rest, drink water or eat; receiving closer parking; having flexible hours to attend prenatal or postnatal appointments; excused from strenuous activities, and so on. No need for ‘magic words’ The PWFA also says that the condition which would require or necessitate accommodation must be “known” to the employer, which essentially means that it should be communicated to the organisation by the employee or their representative. However, the pregnant employee should not have to use “magic words” or legal terms, in order to receive the right to accommodation. Furthermore, once the limitations of the employee are known to the employer they could either grant the request or offer another way to accommodate the needs of the pregnant worker. An employment attorney, Christine Bestor Townsend, told CBS MoneyWatch, “Employees don't have to use any magic language. Employers need to recognize the requests that come in and be prepared to deal with those requests.” She also noted that since pregnancy is temporary the “hardship standard is harder”. Rights groups hail the legislation Over the years, several employees have come forward with their stories and the hardships they had to face in the workplace while they were pregnant or postpartum. Speaking about her experience, Natasha Jackson said that she faced discrimination, over a decade ago, that eventually led to her termination which nearly drove her family toward homelessness. In an interview with ABC News, Jackson said that she was three months pregnant with her third child while working as an account manager at the local furniture store in Charleston, South Carolina. However, she was placed on a 12-week unpaid leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) after her doctor recommended that she avoid lifting anything more than nine kilogrammes. “The PWFA is the culmination of a 10-year-long campaign to close gaps in civil rights laws so pregnant workers are not pushed out of jobs or forced to risk their health when they require reasonable accommodations on the job, like a water bottle to stay hydrated or a transfer away from strenuous heavy lifting,” Vice President of an employee advocacy group, A Better Balance, Elizabeth Gedmark, told CBS. <p>The Defense Security Cooperation Agency released a statement saying that the sale would involve up to 48 Patriot PAC-3 launchers and up to 644 Patriot PAC-3 MSE projectiles, along with radars and control components for the systems. &nbsp;</p>

<p>The agency further added that the State Department, which is authorised to approve US arms export deals, had okayed the sale. This will give Poland some of the most advanced US air defence systems.</p>

<p>"The proposed sale will improve Poland's missile defence capability and contribute to Poland’s military goals of updating capability while further enhancing interoperability with the United States and other allies," the agency said in a statement.</p>

<p>The Patriots are curated for use against incoming high-speed projectiles and aircraft.</p>

<p>He said that "security guarantees have been given" as promised to Russian President Vladimir Putin. "I see Prigozhin's been flying aboard this plane - yes, indeed he’s in Belarus today," he further added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lukashenko mentioned that Belarus is not building any camps for the group, but will accommodate them if they want. However, their presence itself has become a matter of concern for the Polish President.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The United States will continue to target the&nbsp;Wagner&nbsp;Group’s revenue streams to degrade its expansion and violence in Africa, Ukraine, and anywhere else."</p>

<p>The&nbsp;Wagner&nbsp;Group&nbsp;did not immediately respond to the US&nbsp;allegations.</p>

<p>The US&nbsp;State Department ahead of the announcement said that the action against&nbsp;Wagner&nbsp;was unrelated to an aborted mutiny last weekend.</p>

<p>Wagner, whose men in Ukraine include thousands of ex-prisoners recruited from Russian jails, has grown into a sprawling international business with mining interests and fighters in Africa and the Middle East.</p>

<p>Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Tuesday that the finances of Prigozhin's catering firm would be investigated after his mutiny, saying&nbsp;Wagner&nbsp;and its founder had received almost $2 billion from Russia in the past year.</p>

<p>Russia's embassy in Washington and Industrial Resources did not immediately respond to requests for comment.</p>

The lab freezer that fell victim to the mishap contained various cultures crucial to a long-term research project on photosynthesis led by Professor KV Lakshmi from the biology and chemistry department, as reported by the BBC.</p>

<p>Typically, these cultures were stored at an ultra-low temperature of -112°F (-80°C).</p>

<p>On September 14, 2020, a few days before the freezer was unplugged, an alarm alerted lab personnel of temperature fluctuations.</p>

<p>The lawsuit highlights that, at that point, the specimens remained viable. Due to COVID-19 restrictions in place at the time, repairs could not be carried out for a week.</p>

<p>In researching the genealogies of America’s political elite, a&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;examination found that a fifth of the nation’s congressmen, living presidents, Supreme Court justices and governors are direct descendants of&nbsp;ancestors&nbsp;who enslaved Black people.</p>

<p>Among 536 members of the last sitting Congress,&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;determined at least&nbsp;100&nbsp;descend from slaveholders. Of that group,&nbsp;more&nbsp;than&nbsp;a quarter of the Senate – 28 members – can trace their families to at least one slaveholder.</p>

<p>Those lawmakers from the 117th session of Congress are Democrats and Republicans alike. They include some of the most influential politicians in America: Republican senators Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, Tom Cotton and James Lankford, and Democrats Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan.</p>

<p>In addition, President Joe Biden and every living former&nbsp;US&nbsp;president – except Donald Trump – are direct descendants of slaveholders: Jimmy Carter, George W&nbsp;Bush, Bill Clinton and – through his white mother’s side – Barack Obama. Trump’s&nbsp;ancestors&nbsp;came to America after slavery was abolished.</p>

<p>Two of the nine sitting&nbsp;US&nbsp;Supreme Court justices – Amy Coney Barrett and Neil Gorsuch – also&nbsp;have&nbsp;direct&nbsp;ancestors&nbsp;who enslaved people.</p>

<p>None of the 118&nbsp;leaders&nbsp;identified by&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;disputed the findings that at least one of their&nbsp;ancestors&nbsp;had enslaved people, but few were willing to discuss&nbsp;the subject: Only a quarter of those identified as having&nbsp;slaveholding&nbsp;ancestors&nbsp;offered any comment to&nbsp;Reuters.</p>

<p>Representative Julia Brownley, a Democrat from California, was among those who did offer comment after&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;emailed her a document about her ancestor Jesse Brownley. According to the 1850 census, her forebear enslaved three people in Portsmouth, Virginia. One was an 8-year-old girl.</p>

<p>“It was&nbsp;a profound thing to learn,” Brownley told&nbsp;Reuters. “When I was told that my great-great-grandfather had two slaves and a child slave that hit me really to the very core.”</p>

<p>Brownley grew up in Virginia. When desegregation came to the public schools in her town, she said, her parents enrolled her in an all-white girls boarding school three hours&nbsp;from home. Her world widened when she studied political science and history at Mount Vernon College, a women’s school that later merged with George Washington University, allowing her to meet a broader range of people, including a Black roommate.</p>

<p>"I think it's important for each member of Congress, in terms of their heritage, it is important for them to know that and bend into it,” she said. “We, as policymakers, members of Congress, we want to move our country forward to sort of that&nbsp;more&nbsp;perfect union, if you will. But we can't do that without knowing the scars in our history as well. And we&nbsp;have&nbsp;to know that and believe in the truths. And that's the way we can formulate better policy."</p>

<p>The&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;examination reveals how tied America remains to the institution of slavery, said board-certified genealogist LaBrenda Garrett-Nelson, who worked with&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;to review its reporting.</p>

<p>"I really believe, especially with respect to this&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;project, that some of the notables whose genealogies we reviewed will pause and think about what it means that they, again, were kind of indirect beneficiaries of slavery. It wasn't something that just happened 200 years ago. You are a direct descendant of someone who benefited from this institution and that it could influence their perspective, especially the people who are currently involved in policymaking,” Garrett-Nelson said</p>

<p>To trace the lineages of the political elite,&nbsp;Reuters&nbsp;journalists assembled tens of thousands of pieces of information contained in thousands of pages of documents. They analyzed&nbsp;U.S. census records, including antebellum tallies of enslaved people known as “slave schedules,” as well as tax documents, estate records, family Bibles, newspaper accounts, and birth and death certificates. The records – in some cases, family wills that show enslaved human beings bequeathed along with feather beds and farm animals – provide a visceral link between today’s decision makers and slavery. In doing so, they expand upon the antiseptic story conveyed by the sandstone monument in the Capitol’s visitor center.</p>

<p>For Representative Gregory Meeks, a Black congressman who represents a district in Queens, New York, the search for his&nbsp;ancestors&nbsp;continues. The top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Meeks said in an interview that he has spent years trying to trace his family history back before 1870.</p>

<p>He found the birth certificate of his grandfather, a man born right after emancipation. The information it gives for that man’s father – Meeks’ great-grandfather – was enslaved, Meeks said.</p>

<p>Meeks said he talks about family heritage with his white congressional colleagues, both publicly and privately.</p>

<p>“Sometimes it does boil up on the committee, particularly, say if we're talking on financial services and we're talking about erasing the wealth disparities, access to capital, being able to move forward. Yes, I speak up and talk about it in very vivid terms to try to explain the perspective of me and America back then and how if we acknowledge that and how if we move forward to try to erase that and make sure that we're letting folks catch up, that we're having and we will&nbsp;have&nbsp;a better America," Meeks said.</p>

<p>About 15 years ago, Meeks said, he took a DNA test that showed his family came from the Mende people of Sierra Leone. Last year, he led a congressional delegation to Africa. In Sierra Leone, the lawmakers stopped at Bunce Island, a former slave-trading port.</p>

<p>He said visiting the port was the most emotional moment for him of the trip and allowed him to reflect on his&nbsp;ancestors’ struggle.</p>

<p>“As I closed my eyes, I could just imagine what was taking place at that time, as I was standing on that island. And so it was both tears and joy. Joy that I'm here. Tears that my&nbsp;ancestors&nbsp;had to go through, what they had to go through,” he said. “Tears and joy."</p>
