A Chinese company’s purchase of an American farmland near a military base has sparked concerns among US lawmakers who have shot off a letter to the Government Accountability Office, highlighting the security implications of such deals.

Earlier this month, around 130 lawmakers requested the agency to analyse the security implications of the Chinese ownership of US agricultural land.

"China's ownership of US farmland is a threat to our food security and national security," James Comer, the Republican member of the House Committee on Oversight and Reform, said in a press release.

In the letter, the lawmakers called on the GAO to find a potential threat to America's food supply in light of the purchase and subsequently inform Congress how to "best protect the security of the American people."

The concerns were raised after a Chinese agricultural company, Fufeng Group, in November last year bought 370 acres (150 hectares) of land in Grand Forks, North Dakota, around 20 kilometres from a US Air Force base, which houses some of the most advanced drones, reports Nikkei Asia newspaper.

Fufeng on its website said that the land will be used for a wet corn milling facility to extract high-value amino acids, lysine and threonine to be used in animal feed. It said that most of the products will be sold in North America.

However, General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, which is responsible for developing the unmanned aircraft systems at the air base, in a statement had opposed the move and called on the Biden administration to pause the project.

"Chinese business efforts are inextricably linked with Chinese government efforts. We can't ignore the opportunity for sophisticated military espionage to co-locate itself within a Chinese business of such scale and scope. Given the proximity to critical national airspace and sensitive military operations on and around Grand Forks Air Force Base, American leaders should be very, very concerned,” General Atomics Aeronautical Systems spokesman Mark Brinkley said.

According to Nikkei Asia newspaper, foreign ownership of American farmlands has doubled in the past decade.

Data by the US Department of Agriculture shows that as of December 2020, 37.6 million acres (15.2 million hectares) of US farmland are owned by foreign individuals and entities.

Canada topped the list with 12.4 million acres, or 32 per cent of the total, followed by the Netherlands, Italy, the UK and Germany.

China holds less than 1 per cent of American farmland with 352,140 acres.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation announced on Sunday that it will contribute $1.2 billion to the effort to eradicate polio.

"Polio eradication is within reach. But as far as we have come, the disease remains a threat," Bill Gates, co-chair of the foundation, said in a statement.

The funding will go to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a national government-led public-private collaboration with the goal of eradicating the illness by 2026.

A virus that enters the central nervous system and damages cells in the spinal cord and brain is the main cause of polio.

The majority of retail employees at an Apple Inc. store in Oklahoma City have decided to unionise, strengthening labour's position at the most valuable firm in the world.

Around 95 of the company's which is housed in the posh Penn Square Mall, cast ballots in an election on Friday night, and the results were tabulated by the US National Labor Relations Board. The Communications Workers of America was elected by the employees, making it the second of Apple's around 270 US stores to unionise.

Following a vote by employees at a Maryland retailer to join the International Association of Machinists in June, the CWA won. This is one of several historic victories this year at formerly union-free US businesses.

In addition to Starbucks Corp., labour organisers have also made headway at Amazon.com Inc., Trader Joe's, and Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. The union's success at Starbucks has quickly gone from one early victory in Buffalo, New York, to hundreds more victories nationwide.

“We believe the open, direct and collaborative relationship we have with our valued team members is the best way to provide an excellent experience for our customers, and for our teams,” Apple said in a statement.

“We’re proud to provide our team members with strong compensation and exceptional benefits. Since 2018, we’ve increased our starting rates in the US by 45% and we’ve made many significant enhancements to our industry-leading benefits, including new educational and family support programs.”

Similar to the Machinists' triumph in Towson, Maryland, the Oklahoma vote may inspire Apple employees who have been secretly considering uniting elsewhere to act soon. The campaign's potential to go nationwide is highlighted by the fact that it was successful in a strongly Republican state with a unionisation rate that is only about half that of the US average.

Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson of US State Department, on Friday (October 14) asked North Korea to cease "all provocations" after its latest ballistic missile launch. The short-range missile was fired into the sea off its east coast.

Earlier, South Korea's military said it scrambled fighter jets when a group of about 10 North Korean military aircraft flew close to the border dividing the two countries, amid heightened tensions over repeated North Korean missiles tests.

As per North Korea's official KCNA news agency, the country's military said that it took "strong military countermeasures" after South Korean artillery fire drills on Thursday.

According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the North Korean missile was launched on Friday from Sunan area near Pyongyang, North Korea's capital.

It was at least the 41st ballistic missile launch by North Korea this year.

The South Korean JCS statement said the aircraft incident happened late on Thursday and early Friday Korean time.

Vedant Patel, Deputy Spokesperson of US State Department, on Friday (October 14) asked North Korea to cease "all provocations" after its latest ballistic missile launch.

North Korea has said that its most recent series of missile tests, which included an intermediate range ballistic missile that flew over Japan last week, was a show of force against joint South Korean and U.S. military drills. South Korea scrambled fighter jets a week ago after North Korean warplanes staged an apparent bombing drill as allied warships held missile defense drills in response to North Korean missile tests. 'Cease provocations and threatening actions,' US tells North Korea

US President Joe Biden on Friday (October 14) reiterated his support for Iran protests and said he stands with the protesting citizens. The ongoing mass protests are the biggest wave of demonstrations in Iran in years.

Protesters are going on over the custodial death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who was detained by Iran's morality police for 'improper' attire, last month.

"I want you to know that we stand with the citizens, the brave women of Iran," Biden said at a college in Irvine, California, addressing a group of protesters who had gathered holding "Free Iran" signs.

"It stunned me what it awakened in Iran. It awakened something that I don't think will be quieted for a long, long time," said Biden.

Mahsa Amini passed away on September 16. According to Oslo-based group Iran Human Rights, more than 100 people have been killed since.

The unrest has continued despite what Amnesty International called an "unrelenting brutal crackdown" that included an "all-out attack on child protesters" -- leading to the death of at least 23 minors.

Biden spoke briefly about the Iran protests ahead of a speech on lowering costs for American families in Irvine, near Los Angeles, which has a large Persian community.

"Women all over the world are being persecuted in various ways, but they should be able to wear in God's name what they want to wear," said Biden.

He added that Iran "has to end the violence against its own citizens simply exercising their fundamental rights".

"I want to thank you all for speaking out," he told the local Persian community.
